Great find! Coming from Jersey was a big adjustment to some places packed with no masks in sight. Six Pence staff were all masked and seating was only every other table. On to the food- solid pub grub. Welsh Rarebit and a Stuffed Banger were an excellent starting duo. Burgers and Sandwiches for everyone were all great choices. Nice selection of beers as well. We stopped into this spot for Christmas Eve lunch after walking past its ivy-covered brick exterior, and the vibe could not have been more perfect. Small, cozy, and convivial, we were instantly transported to an English countryside tavern. While this spot really delivered on ambiance the food was less than impressive. This spot lacks a fryer, which is exceedingly odd for a British restaurant, but we made do with a Caesar salad and an order of Welsh rarebit, which seemed to feature nacho cheese instead of the classic English cheddar. Regardless, this spot is a perfect setting for a pint and serious British vibes in one of the most picturesque Savannah neighborhoods. read more

We are in town for a conference. There are many places to eat in this area. We thought our friends recommended this place for the fish and chips meal. When we arrived we thought the building was interesting like many of the others in this area. We looked but we didn't find fish and chips as an option on the menu, so we asked the waiter about it. He was instantly angry and told us "well I don't have a fryer, so no". He was super rude. We told him we would like to pay for the one soft drink we had ordered and then would be leaving. He slammed the ticket down and stormed away. I would not recommend this place after being treated so rudely. read more

Since I've never been to England I can't not say this is an authentic English pub or not but as an American it had the feel of what I would assume is one and that's plenty fine in Savannah. Great beer selection and several from across the pond. Did enjoy the black and tan and black and brown which was mixed with a local NC brand we enjoy. The only negative food item was the dry chicken in one of our salads. Otherwise the corned beef Rueben was very good with plenty of meat. Sheppard pie was good. I've had better but this one had nothing to complain about. It is a small place so large groups may struggle to get in. read more

My wife and I are in Savannah for vacation and are staying in the Downtown area. For our first night, we decided to walk around and just try to find a restaurant for dinner and drinks. We stumbled upon Six Pence Pub and immediately noticed the red phone booth outside as well as a couple dogs, which we are big friends of. We noticed an empty table outside and went inside to to see if we could take it, which we could. The menu has many different types of food you might find in a British pub as well many types of sandwiches. The Friday night special was prime rib with mashed potatoes and asparagus which is a personal favorite of mine. One of my goals of the trip was to try as many of the local beers as possible, so I went with Creature Comforts Tropicalia. The food was good with the mashed potatoes being the standout. The beer was pretty good, but likely not something I would order regularly. The outside seating was very nice being amount the Spanish Moss-covered trees. Friday nights are very busy with foot traffic, so we had to contend with crowds gathered around the table for a lot of the meal. This is a good restaurant with a good variety of drinks. If you are staying downtown and are looking for some good pub food and drinks, I would recommend this. read more

Guinness wasn't good they ran out of Belhaven so had to go to to my Yorkshire fall back the Sam's Smiths. Yep I'm from England lived in Savannah before this visit. The flaky "crust" was a pastry similar to Yorkshire pudding, and the filling, albeit a tad salty, had an ample amount of chicken and assorted veggies. My mother kept saying her shepherd's (cottage) pie was amazing (we were quite hungry, so our descriptive terms may be exaggerated, but whatever). This time bartender was so so...carded us both even though we are 50 yrs old? Anyway, she was not really in the mood for small talk (was not that busy), so instead of eating at the bar we moved to a table. Both the bartender and the server said the pot roast was the best so we ordered that. Was in fact excellent but they plated the gristle from the roast as well (about a third of the meat) which was inedible and unsightly. Had our New Years dinner here and so glad we did! Our sever was super attentive and even though they were busy they were always checking up on us. Started out with the nachos which were pretty good. It had melted cheese (like a nacho sauce), black beans, chicken (recommended), sour cream, and jalapeños. For dinner I got the pot roast which was absolutely delicious. The pot roast was perfection - flavorful! I got the mash potatoes and their green beans! My better half got their Shepard pie, highly recommended with the French onion soup. I liked the soup, it was a lot more onions than expected (yes - even though it's an onion soup) but overall good not overly salty. Cheese was baked to a crispy on top which is the best. It's on a quite side-street, just off of Liberty, and the outdoor seating is beautiful. You will see one of Savannah's famous squares as well as horse drawn carriages that regularly walk by. Side note...for those that don't enjoy eating elbow to elbow with a bunch of strangers, this might not be the place for you if you end up sitting inside. It's a fairly tight space with a large bar, so prepare yourself for a slightly cramped, possibly loud experience. I've always liked the Six Pence Pub. Small, cozy interior, several sidewalk umbrella tables and a British menu. Over the years I've enjoyed some meals better than others, but that's just how it goes when you frequent a spot. It was fairly quiet on this Hurricane Dorian Eve, but they had customers and were gracious host. A mandatory curfew forced an early closing. Our waitress was thoughtful to bring a bowl of fresh water to my Dalmatian, Tito! So this restaurant is pet friendly when dining outside. The Shepard's Pie was served in a crock with a ground beef base with carrots and peas, topped with mashed potatoes and melted cheese. Very filling and I was happy to give half to hubs. He enjoyed his appetizer of Cheese Rarebit - 6 baguette slices with Cheese Rarebit sauce. Interesting tidbits for the tourist are that Six Pence Pub is one of the haunted spots in town, and additionally, it was in the movie "Something to Talk About" with Julia Roberts. read more
