The bread offerings are pretty good. I think on par with 85 degrees with most things if thats what people are comparing against. I didnt try any of their cakes or refrigerated items. They do have less variety, but I think what they do have they do it pretty well. Favorites are the pork sung breads, almond croissant, hk ham and egg bun, and the pineapple coconut bun. Dont get the chicken pie or the bbq pastry warm items. They arent good... Overall, I feel this is a solid chinese bakery and i would be back more often if i was in the area. read more

I don't come here too often, but when I was here about a week ago, I saw a sign at the front that said "Grand Opening". From what other people are saying, I think Sheng Kee Bakery must have taken over Kee Wah Bakery. The Sheng Kee at this (new) location is very clean and organized, and I hope it stays that way. They now serve milk tea as well and added a couple tables and seats. They usually have the same selection of cakes (black forest, fruit tart, tiramisu, etc) every time I'm here. I didn't particularly like any of the cakes that were on display that day, so I asked one of the ladies if they had any fresher cakes in the back. She brought out a mango mousse and a taro cake for me, so I just chose the 8-inch round taro cake (~$30-35). She boxed it right up and added a plastic "Happy Birthday" sign on top per my request (no charge). The cake also comes with a plastic cake slicer. The cake was delicious, had a distinct taro flavor, and wasn't too sweet. read more

Sheng Kee is in the old Kee Wah space now and a little bigger with some seating and bigger selection of cakes. Their pastries are more in line with their other location in Cupertino and maybe because I'm from hawaii where these bakeries are few and far. In addition to the pastries, they have many drink items on the menu as well. I'm looking forward to more visits next week when I return back to the bay area. read more

I've made a pit-stop at Sheng Kee Bakery a couple of times when visiting other businesses at the Milpitas Square plaza. At around 7 pm on a weekday all that I've got available are scraps and leftovers from what they were unable to sell throughout the day. A small consolation is that its state is at least better than the situation at the nearby similarly themed (Chinese bakery) Kee Wah Bakery which is wiped clean (I mean every piece of fresh bread has been sold out). Over a period of time I've tried a bunch of their offerings like taro bun, berry tale, custard roll, pineapple bun, custard bun etc. (I'm not sure if these are the names that are used but that's what I've seen them being called at other bakeries specially 85 degrees). Taste wise I've felt that they are one rung below similar products that you get at 85 degrees. I mean they are not bad just not as good. Price wise too they are a tad cheaper that 85 degrees. You can pay with card but there is a $10 minimum. Overall I think that Sheng Kee Bakery is like the poorer cousin of 85 degrees. Most of the offerings are similar, but not as good. If I had to pick a bakery to go to, I drive another couple of blocks and get something from 85 degrees rather than come here, but don't mind stopping by if I'm already in its immediate vicinity. read more

9 PM on a Saturday night and the cases are not desolate wastelands. Plenty of fresh pastry to be had still. For savory options, I like the bbq pork pastry and the chicken pie. For sweet, I like pineapple custard buns, turnovers, and pineapple cakes. And because I am Taiwanese (if you couldn't tell already by the love of all things pineapple), I can never resist potato salad buns. This location stands out for it offers seating and a drink menu with special pricing (the day's specials were only $1.99). Friendly and knowledgeable staff offered us samples of the teas, which were refreshing and delicious. Entered intending to only scout cakes for my mom's birthday (the selection was gorgeous) but left with a pastry (orange roll slice) anyway. Already had a drink or definitely would've ordered one. PINEAPPLE BUNS AND PORTUGUESE EGG TARTS!!!!!! Cute location, pretty spacious with a few big tables set up. Friendly staff! Usually not that crowded so it's nice to chat there with friends and avoid the cold. I love the pineapple buns here and the portuguese egg tarts (there are the regular ones and the portuguese ones so get the portuguese ones- they have slightly burnt tops)!!!!! There is definitely less of a variety compared to other bread places, but I think I would just come here for those 2 and maybe some other kinds (pork sung bread, green onion bread, meat pastries near the register). Their toast is really good too (coconut). I also always get their cakes for birthdays because they're less sweet and fluffier than typical American cakes. They're also filled with fruit and yummy cream! Prices are super reasonable (cheaper than 85c)! Their bread packaging is also better in my opinion because the bags are slightly bigger which makes sure the bread isn't exposed or falls out (85c bags are too tiny!) We come here once every few months. There is a good variety of bakery items here, most of them taste fairly good. However, the paper wrapped sponge cupcake with slivered almonds on top we bought here three days ago (July 18) had a strange taste, and it turned out to be moldy inside. Since these cupcakes are wrapped in paper, it is not obvious from the outside how fresh they are. This bad experience definitely gives me pause about coming here again. It is bad business practice to sell stale or expired foods to customers in order to get rid of them. The pineapple buns were very disappointing. I tried both the HK and regular pineapple buns. Both were dry, over baked, tasteless, and lack filling. Luckily I got a vanilla creme bun and used the filling inside to fix the pineapple buns. The vanilla creme bun had too much filling but it worked to my advantage this time. I would not be able to eat anything on its own. I would rather go somewhere else where I can get the complete pineapple bun with both topping and filling, and where they don't over bake the pastry. read more

The young cashier is terrible. There is no communication with the customer at the station. She'll continue to talk to the other cashier and not pay attention to you at all. Weird...I had to stare and listen in on her whole conversations with no attention to my order. I get that it's boring but geese, pay attention and greet/talk to the customers. So simple. read more

So, we were eating in the area and I saw this place on Yelp and I read some reviews about the egg tarts here. Honestly, I don't think any one can compare to Golden Gate Bakery, well the egg tarts in particular. Don't get me wrong, it was good but the flakey crust had an after taste. I also got this cranberry cookies which is better than this other place that a friend would bring me cranberry cookies and told me that no other bakery has it. Well today I found a bakery that does have it and to me this place makes it so much better and it's buttery and so good.They had so many other things and cakes too that look so good but I didn't want to try everything, not yet. I've ordered the Mango Mousse Cake and the French Strawberry Cake here (all for birthdays) before. They both taste absolutely amazing. I remember when those white loaves were $3; now they are $5--such perfectly squared slices and tasty. I remember when it used to be a cafe now it looks like it's barely standing in the small shop it's in now. I haven't bought a cake from this place in years and decided to pick one up this year. The green tea red bean cake was the chosen one for preorder. I asked if they could change the red bean filling and they said no. I fired back at asking 'if you make it, can't you just change the filling?' The response was they don't make the round cakes in that store, they are delivered from the main branch in san francisco. Cakes made from this location are sheet cakes. Erg, I was still ignorant enough to buy it. Once we started chomping on it, all downhill. I imagined the cake to be very similar to their green tea red bean sponge cake rolls--nice think green colored flavored cake layer with thin red bean filling. Boy was I pissed. The cake part was their plain white, not the green I was expecting. And at least two centimeters of the green tea flavored creme all over. The cake to creme ratio was practically 4:1. Had I known this I would have just ordered their tub of creme. Ugh never again. Luckily the next day, my cake craving was satiated by the fabulous mocha cake from prolific over, and let me tell you that cake to creme ratio was 9:1. read more

Theyve taken over the space of the other bakery in the plaza (totally forgot the name , but its a similar type of bakery to Shengkee). Im not sure if its a change in management or staff , but theyre not as welcoming or nice as the other ladies in the previous location. Their pastries selection seemed a lot smaller , or they just make less in general ? Most of the time ive been in lately theyre always out of something especially their premade sandwiches. Used to be available 9/10 times despite time frame , but now 3/5 times the sandwiches are gone even if its 4 5 PM (hours before closing). This rarely happened when they were at their original location. Im not sure if its lack of staff or they just dont make enough, but I've never experienced this at their Cupertino branch. I will come back because Shengkee is a staple , but itll be a lot more convienent if they carry more items . read more

This place has a bunch of delicious Chinese pastries and cakes. I bought a strawberry mousse cake with fruit today for my uncle's birthday. It was quite delicious. Not as much cream as I expected and it wasn't super sweet like other cakes. If you're interested in the pastries, the pastries range from $1.00 to $3.00. If you come at 8:30 p.m., all pastries are 50% off! Yes, there would be Chinese people waiting around at 8:15 p.m. with a tray of yummies until that time comes to pay for their yummies. Sheng kee needs to change their 10 dollar minimum for credit /debit card charge! That is terrible customer service just so they could feel like they're earning a few more dollars profit and not incur too much fee charges. That's really cheap for a big popular company like Sheng Kee. Last week I stood in line at the bakery for 20 minutes to ring up a charge for 8 dollars. They wouldn't let me pay with the credit card for just a two dollar difference! Cheap! Yay! I'm a fan of the Portuguese Egg Tarts here (see photos uploaded - view from the top down photo and a side view photo as well). Upon trying Portuguese Egg Tarts within this past year, the bf and I have much preferred Portuguese Egg Tarts over the regular Chinese Egg Tarts. The Portuguese Egg Tarts differ from the Chinese Egg Tarts in that it is like creme brulee in a flaky puff pastry case and it tastes more like an American custard pie. The price difference between the Portuguese and the regular Chinese Egg Tarts is $1.25 vs $0.99. Saw a sign on the door today that Sheng Kee is having a special up until the 16th of March - 6 Chinese Egg Tarts (Regular is $0.99/each) for $4.99. People who were ordering in front of me got 12 of them goodies. The bf and I walked away with 3 Portuguese Egg Tarts, BBQ Pork Pastry, Pork Bun Pastry, and a Pineapple Custard Pastry. Our last trip here we tried a slice of the Chocolate Mousse cake and that was kinda ehhh... (see photo I have uploaded) They accept credit card's here except for AMEX. My family was visiting from Virginia and just like other asian families...their mission should they choose to accept it was to bring home a bunch of baked goods for the family. And you know asian families, we roll deep. My pops is used to going to this one place in Daly City for Cocktail Buns. We were over there and ding ding ding...they were on vacation for a few weeks! Kee Wah Bakery popped up on Yelp first and I was like...hmmmm...every time I walk into there, it seems like they have a bunch of workers in the back, they got this! Unfortunately, they told me it was too short notice ( I was calling at 12PMish for a next day (anytime) pickup ). I didn't think 3 dozen was a lot, but I could see how that may be. I called Sheng Kee and I felt immediately comforted in that I wasn't getting yelled at. lol. (the people at Kee Wah wanted to speak Chinese to me and I don't know Chinese, so there was a lot of back and forth "huhs". This is pretty normal to me so not a big deal, but it's helpful when I can actually converse comfortably (moreso for them I'm sure)) The person who picked up the phone was like "For tomorrow? Yea I think so! Let me ask our chef!" A few back and forths and the Chef was not only fine with it but was like "Is 11AM ok?" Uhhhh. Yea! Again, I was thinking this may be an impossible mission, and I was willing to pick these up at 11PM if needed. Called at 11AM just in case and they were like "Yup. It's ready!" I ordered a tiny blueberry cheesecake here and it was delicious. Take the nasty Chinese jelly thing off the top and it's a nice little cheesecake dessert with blueberry filling. They have a very nice flat screen TV, but it's in a really odd location. It is overlooking the cash register so you need to look up at it. Unfortunately, the husband and wife running the joint make occasional eye contact with you. It's awkward, especially since the wife looks as if she might have been on the Chinese woman's swimming team a few years back. I did not get to see if she had any armpit hair, so I can't confirm if this is true or not. In the end, the TV screen does not matter. I can't read Simplified Chinese. Bummer. I need to come back and try their pork buns. read more

I would give this store 4 or maybe 5 stars for the breads, but my review is more toward the service they gave me. The cashier (a young lady) is very nonchulant EVERYTIME we go to the store. Usually there were two or three customers when we visit, but that cashier never greets and never says thank you when customers visit. Last time I went here to buy a dozen of egg tarts, and asked her if she could package each into small bags. She gave us bags and tell us to package at home, and she sounded like a command. I mean I can package by myself, but she could've use a better way to ask us to do it on our own, maybe adding a "please" at the end would sounded better instead of "package on your own". And btw, there was no other customer in the store at that time, so I don't see why she's unwilling to help that favor, and gave us attitudes. Sheng Kee went through a somewhat recent remodeling within the past year, where the current Porridge restaurant used to be SK's expanded space for its failed Hong Kong/Taiwanese style western restaurant (was great in 96 for its time then as years passed, went through a downward spiral in quality, forcing the closure of the Sheng Kee Cafe/restaurant in Pacific East Mall in the East Bay/Richmond side). But Sheng Kee didn't stop with there, they also remodeled their bakery side of the shop, or whatever is left of it. It looks a lot cleaner, modern and there were some pumpkin themed mini pastries and snacks. Towards the back wall by the counter under the heated cabinets were Cantonese style egg tarts and also Portugese style egg tarts. Between them, Kee Wah, and 99 Ranch they are the only game in town for these egg tart bombs. Sadly their outer crust is not the sexy flakeylicious kind that was Golden Gate Bakery in SF. By the way did you fellas and fellows hear whispers of rumors that GGB is either being sold or going through some extended closure? So that means not only RIP the bomb ass egg tart pimp ass chef, but the whole bakery's fate is uncertain. EDIT: chowhound reports are now saying the bakery is alive and kicking and the egg tart receipe is seemingly preserved. PHEW!!! This means every remaining Chinese bakery out there need to step up their game and come up with an egg tart receipe that will not only last but be remembered for generations. GGB's egg tarts during their heyday were the best in the world, I would say. Sadly just like Street Fighter, there is always some bitch who wants to knock you off the championship title. Remember, "you must defeat Shen Long to stand a F**KING chance!" And Shen Long never existed (rumored fake character) but believed to be the shoryu or the shoryuken (rising dragon punch). This bakery is sinful... Everything is fresh, tastes fresh, I have been coming here for years... I have to be careful, too much ends up on ma hips... Their savory, warm, flaky crust mini meat pies are Yum (pork, chicken curried). Their red bean and pineapple custard buns are amazing! They have a full on bakery, so they have the gourmet light cream cakes, kinda reminds me of Goldilocks bakery, with the exotic passion fruit, mango lychee cakes... Great choice for dessert and or breakfast... can't go wrong here! read more

"Buns, Buns, Buns!" That's what they should rename this bakery because it's all about the BUNS..... Cocktail and BBQ Pork Buns that is! As for the BBQ Pork Buns, it's by far my favorite pastry that this shop sells. Too darn bad that 2 out of 3 times I go there, they're all sold out. Bummer! They are quite generous with the bbq pork filling and it's very well flavored. Cocktail buns are tasty--although not as good as our fav TC Pastry in South SF.
