8" Taro Cake
Pearl V.

2.5 stars For my hubby's birthday last month, I wanted to get him a different cake than I usually do (burnt almond from Peter's). He's not really a cake eater, and also doesn't like overly sweet or rich cakes. I thought a taro cake would be a nice change so I searched Yelp and came up with this place and had decent ratings on the taro cake. I've actually never ordered anything from this bakery so I was really crossing my fingers that it would be a good choice. When I called to place an order the day before, the person who answered spoke English well and was friendly and polite. She recommended an 8" round cake for the size of my party, which sounded reasonable. I told her what I wanted the cake to say, and what time I'd be in to pick it up at. When I came in for pick up, the cake wasn't already pre-written on yet which wasn't a big deal-- but was a little annoying. What was the point of asking me what I wanted written on the cake yesterday? The gal behind the counter stuck a "Happy Birthday" gold sign on the cake and "Peter" in icing. That was it. Pretty simple. Anyway, on to the cake. On the outside it looks beautifully decorated with frosting and fruit. Hubby's siblings and I agreed that the taro filling was very powdery and slightly chalky. The fruit on the top tasted strange as well. The rest of the cake was plain and a little on the drier side. I don't think I'll order it again. However, my mom-in-law enjoyed it a lot, even taking home the leftover cake slices, so take that as you will. I'll keep searching for a good taro cake. They do accept credit cards here.

One queue was for online orders (recommended by the bakehouse) and the other was manned by an attendant with a tablet and a printed menu. Parking wasn't a hassle this time as there were plenty of spots. Add the fact that we were now familiar with Vietnam Town. We got our usuals with choux (Kaya and Ube), Pandan-Coconut Milk Bread and Banh Bo (honeycomb cake). The mention worthy Guava filled Mochi Cake was so good! A yummy tip that elevates this baked good was when I toasted it (4 minutes) in an airfryer. The crunchy surface with the chewy mochi texture plus the sweet guava stuffing was the perfect ratio I was looking for in a dessert pastry. Can't wait to go back and have more of the guava filled goodness!

We ordered the bánh bò (honeycomb cake), guava filled mochi cake, and espresso cookie. I absolutely loved the bánh bò. It was soft, bouncy, and flavorful, as it should be. I would definitely get this again. The guava filled mochi cake was okay. I sort of wish the guava filling was spread around the more. I would not recommend the espresso cookie. It was an odd combination of flavors. It wasn't burnt but tasted like it/bitter and heavy on the butter. I would come back for the bánh bò for sure though!

It is located next to the grocery store Nobhill and there are quick 20min parking in front of the store. We were greeted right when we entered the door and looked at the delicious treats to eat. There is the main seating area and another area in the back to sit down along with sitting outside. It felt upscale and nice. The sign in front of the store had some drink specials and I got a strawberry/matcha drink I think it was called Rose. I asked what was good here and the cashier said the mini almond pastries and other treats in the front. The mini almond pastry was really good and also got a crème brûlée which was really good as well. I would come back again and try their hot teas next time. Delicious treats. The food is worth the wait. Don't sleep on the black pepper sausage danish: the croissant dough is crisp and flaky, and doesn't get soggy when baked around the sausage. It's comparable in execution to the Croissant Hot Dog served at Dominique Ansel Las Vegas (in Caesar's Palace), but at a way more accessible price point. Which isn't to say this place is cheap; like many artisanal bakeries in California, it comes with a premium price tag, but at least it's not Dominique Ansel pricy. Croissante's croissant dough baked goods (viennoiserie) is pun-intended "proof" that you get what you pay for. The dining space is limited and lively. Conversing is a little tough, but if you just need a place to sit while eating, it's just right. Extra special shout out this time to Dill who had informed me the fried chicken dishes today would be an hour and a half wait. After deciding there wasn't anything I wanted more than the Fried Chicken and Spiced Croffle (croissant dough baked in a waffle iron) and was happy to wait, they were nice enough to check in with the kitchen and see if it could be made sooner than that. I didn't expect to be accommodated, so I was happy they were able to do that. You get two chicken thighs and croffles per order. It's enough for two light eaters to share.

The design was so classy, elegant, and truly above my expectations. You can really see the care and creativity that went into making it. My husband was so happy when he saw it, and it made the celebration even more special for us. I also want to give a special thanks to the manager at the San Jose location. When I mentioned that we would be traveling in the car for about 7 hours, they were so kind and helpful in giving us options to make sure the cake would stay perfect during the trip. Their suggestion worked so well! Overall, I am beyond satisfied with both the cake and the wonderful customer service. Highly recommend! Thank you for making our celebration extra special.

There's no where to dine in so you take it and leave. I didn't enjoy the tiramisu crepe cake. I think it was a little too mushy for me. It didn't have the mascarpone flavor of tiramisu. It was also very very expensive. I'd recommend going to Lady M in Valley Fair for better crepe cakes.

Even the malasadas were underwhelming and if you think they are similar to Leonard's, then this does not come close. For the Portuguese tarts, they were served a bit cold. I'd recommend reheating them. The crust was so oily it seeped through the napkin and the filling was overly sweet. I took one bite and couldn't finish it. Overall, the texture and flavor didn't meet expectations. Service was decent but the staff were not friendly. This was a bit of a letdown. If you can, I'd suggest driving or taking the train to SF for this better spot, Holy Nata. It was so much better.
