Even during these pandemic times, the Milpitas Plaza is bustling with many people getting groceries and food (but thankfully parking is a little easier to find). This was the case at Sheng Kee as well. On this experience I felt that the food items were just okay, and the customer service unfortunately lacking. Covid-conscious procedures: The bakery has placed a sign inside the door (easy to miss) that the maximum occupancy is 7 people, so if there are a few people indoors already one is asked to wait outside until employees wave them inside. You will be scolded harshly if you accidentally walk in early. Employees are double-masked and wear gloves. The pick-your-own breads and pastries are still available, but now with all of the items pre-bagged in plastic for safety precautions. It didn't look like any drinks were available, only bakery items and cakes. I had ordered a cake for pick up and the process was relatively smooth. After waiting in line I let the employees know my name and number, then they slide my selected cake into a nice transportation-friendly box. This took about 15 minutes, perhaps since the employee packaging my cake seemed like she had no experience doing so. While I was there, I also picked up a few freshly made Portuguese and "Regular" egg tarts that had come right out of the oven (or warmer, not sure) Food: - Taro cake: more expensive than, but comparable to that of 99 Ranch. The fruits on top did not seem very ripe, but were glazed in an appealing way. Last week I went to another bakery in the shopping center next door and: 1) the bakery and seating area were messy 2) inventory is always low at the "other" bakery So...I've updated my review for Shen Kee from 2 to 4 stars because: 1) Shen Kee is always bright and clean whenever I go 2) Their inventory is always fresh and it seems like they put fresh items out throughout the day 3) I needed a bday cake last week and will just go here because their cake prices are reasonable and inventory & selection are good If you come to this shopping center (bakery is next to 99 Ranch), go early because parking lot fills up during peak hours. read more

Look at this cake. It was a hit at the New Year's Day party. Everyone in my family loved it, and everyone in my family has loved Sheng Kee cakes and pastries for years. I came in at 9:35am. They were packaging some breads, but helped me out quickly. Including swapping out the small Happy New Year sign for a bigger one which made me smile. I'd only ever tried the Cupertino location, but this one is pretty on point as well. I have followed this bakery in its OG form when it first opened in the corner of the plaza with the restaurant attached. I can always count on them for warm, just right $1.75 Portuguese egg tarts. I have tried the tarts at a variety of Asian bakeries, but I still enjoy them the most here due to partially nostalgia, partially price, and overall value. The service can be a bit slow on busy Saturday mornings. When I left they had a line wrapped around the baked goods making it difficult for anybody who wanted to browse the baked delights. read more

My favorite Chinese bakery in the region due to the large variety of original and unique Chinese bread/buns/cakes/tarts/mooncakes/cookies. They have every flavor of pineapple bread you can think of - chocolate, matcha, coconut, etc. They also have a variety of bread slices - taro, raisin, pineapple crumble and others. They have a fridge with slices or whole sponge cakes of variety of sorts. By the cashier, they have a hot foods display with BBQ pork buns, chicken pie, regular & Portuguese style egg tarts and a pot of tea eggs. The taste of every item is on point per Chinese pastry standards. I have yet to be disappointed by any item. Cakes and bread are flavorful and have the perfect balance of doughiness, moisture and sweetness/savoriness (depending on the bread you choose). I have to agree with some other reviewers who have mentioned that if you are not Chinese or speak Mandarin/Canto, they may not be as nice to you in terms of service. Asian pride I guess - LOL. I'm literally sitting here reviewing this draft. This Sheng Kee location is horrible. All I wanted was a piece of pineapple bun and a coffee but the limit is $10 to use a card. I picked out a loaf of red bean toast to go along with my order and I was at $8.60!! AND STILL COULDN'T PAY! These employees at the front were giving me attitude about not having $10 and they aren't friendly whatsoever. I went and grabbed two more pineapple buns and the lady rang me up for just two instead of three!! She then says, "oh I scanned two buns only not three. Can you only take two??" Just because she made the mistake of not scanning the third bun on the register, she tells me to just accept two and not take the other. They already gave their customer a hard time and they couldn't even be apologetic. This is the worst location ever. I'm so pissed. I recommend no one coming here. We purchased a cake we wanted to eat at your establishment only to be refused any utensils or plates. We were forced to eat on wax paper and cut our cake with the Pete's coffee cup holder. ADDITIONALLY, it is 850pm now. You have a line almost out to the door. You have another large party of 10 enjoying their treats on another table and you have a young kid running around trying to close the store. Both employees seem young. I hope they are not related to the owner or else that is just poor leadership from the top down. The bakery underwent remodeling and it now looks similar to 85 degree bakery. The pastries are different from what I bought before. I bought the HK style pineapple bun, B.B.Q bun, wife pastry and lotus seed moon cake. The pineapple bun wasn't as flaky as the original and the taste wasn't sweet. I tasted more the bun than the flavor. The mini moon cake and wife pastry looked dry. They taste less sweet than original pastries I had before the store changed. Looks like different management. They used to just have breads/pastries laid out but now they're like 85 and they have plastic coverings all over the place and lifts to open similarly to them. Not to mention a good chunk of breads are the same as 85 degrees like the brioche (even in the same paper container!). The cakes though leave to be desired. They always look dry whenever we see them and a little sad/dreary. The pricing has gone up a bit probably due to inflation. We did get the chocolate bun with crumbled chocolate pieces on top. It was ok but I think would've been excellent when it first came out. It was very dry when we ate it. We're looking to try out other pastries and compare with the 85 equivalent. The lady casher with short hair made me feel discriminated. It was almost 7pm the store is closing soon. I went to store and get some bakery, there were some newspaper laid on the bakery table. I was interested in the title of front page of news paper, so I took at it for few minutes, I did not see the price tag for the newspaper. The the casher with short hair told me to not touch the newspaper, I said oh I thought it is free. She started to shout at me say if you don't have money to buy the newspaper, don't look at it. These are one of my favorite almond croissants in all of California. Almond Marzipan paste inside, flaky, crispy croissant, burnt sugar crust feet, some crusted burnt sugar on top, sliced almonds and powder sugar over that. Good as is, but lustfully better after few minutes in the toaster oven. I torture my co-workers in the morning by making them smell it during fruition. Mango mouse revisited...for Father's day! My mom called me early Saturday morning from her workplace to make me promise to buy the mango mousse she had from Sheng Kee. Yeah I would disobey my mom's wishes thinking I know better. However when we came to the bakery, they were out of mango cake, and the other cakes looked more like the generic ones they sell in 99 ranch. I bought some bread (I just had to!) but was sooo disappointed so I literally ran on the other side of Barber Ct. (both bakeries were on opposite sides) praying that Sheng Kee still has the mango mousse. It is the run of shame....S.H.A.M.E.... They were open with a line on the counter. They got my cake (the last one!) and was waiting for someone to help me out, but I figured they were so busy so I decided to get inline and order it as I paid. The very nice cashier greeted me, took my order and pulled out my cake for boxing. I had to tell her that my mom loves their cake and she was very appreciative about my ramblings. I paid and left. Taste wise, I love this cake better than the first one. This one is much more moussey (airy in texture) and the mango taste is very prominent. It is still the perfect sweetness for my mom. I love how Asian bakeries make cakes that are less on the sweet side whether it be the frosting or the cake self! I ordered their infamous mango mousse cake for $27.95, order ahead to make sure they have one ready for you! Everyone was super friendly when I came in to pick up my cake and they even provided a little happy birthday sign free of charge. The cake tastes even better the next day in the fridge! Stunning decor (check that ceiling!). I like when a place is welcoming by the ambiance itself, it invites to enter. I like how big this bakery is and the the fact that the main door faces the counter where the cashiers are, and then to the left you have the pastries assortment and to the right different tables of various formats (even a communal table). I like how organized it looks like and the design. The pastries as awesome and generous in content, so that is a super plus. As per my boba, it looked kind of artificial and not the usual jasmine milk tea flavor I am used to at other places. It's astonishing to see how poorly sanitary measures are taken at this place when the outbreak of COVID-19 is on the rise, particularly in Santa Clara county. Many sliding doors of shelves are wide open, with unpackaged bread/buns piled up. I think they do it on purpose in order to keep them cool. Flies come and go; customers walk around in the store freely helping themselves without keeping a safe distance. At one point I hear a female employee behind the counter coughing so badly. These just grossed me out, I left immediately They prey on customers who have limited English skills, so they can get away with being reported to Department of Health while not complying rules. Sheng Kee moved but is still in the same shopping center. They took over the Kee Wah Bakery. They added a place to sit and is now serving boba tea. It was clean when I went. Assam Brown Sugar Milk Tea: I liked it. At 100% sweetness and regular ice, it was on the sweet side, which I like a lot. It also has enough tea flavor without being too strong. The boba are chewy but not hard. I scored a special where I got a free pineapple bun with the purchase of boba tea. I didn't get around to eating it right away, but when we unwrapped it perhaps 5 days later, it was still moist and spongy. The flavor was good although I later spied another similar product at a competitor's that was a wider specimen. I also tried a new product of theirs - the Japan Red Bean Cream Cheese Bun $1.45 - and found it soft and tasty 4 days after purchase. They had a minimum for charging, so I had to pay cash. I wanted to get 2 breads to begin with, then I got few more even there were not much selections left already(not even fresh) since I saw the $10 minimum for credit card charge. They have cocktail bread, pineapple bread, egg custard, cakes, sponge roll, and boba drink....etc. They also offer peet's coffee & tea. That's the only thing I got tonight since I'm not too hungry.
