Super cute little Italian spot tucked away in a nice neighborhood. The front patio was quiet and shaded - perfect for brunching outside on a hot summer day. The brunch menu is also quite extensive and reasonably priced with items to satisfy everyone - they have several daily specials too. Also, the portion sizes are definitely generous. I ordered the eggs carbonara with poached eggs and my pasta arrived with eggs that were most definitely not poached. It's almost as if they were baked, but with the yolks fully cooked through too. This totally ruined my order as I was really looking forward to runny yolks. The pasta was cooked perfectly but overall the entre was just too rich and heavy for my liking. My table also ordered the French toast, the breakfast panini, and the daily special panini. The consensus was that the paninis tasted alright (and were huge!) but were too greasy. I love shrimp. I also love Italian food. Sometimes, when restaurants mix the two together, they either use inferior quality shrimp or over cook it such that the shrimp part of the dish is chewy and disgusting. However, Shells & Sauce's Shrimp Diavolo was delicious! Not only was the sauce super tasty, the shrimp was juicy and cooked exactly right! (If I ordered it again, I'd leave off the goat cheese 'cause I'm just not a fan of GC...and get more fresh Parmesan!) They have a deal on Groupon for dinner where you pay $25 and get $40 worth of food. My friend purchased this Groupon looking forward to some amazing Italian food. When my friend presented the Groupon, our server informed us that we can't use the Groupon bc of the holiday, Father's Day. NO WHERE in the details does it say "cannot use on holidays." The manager wouldnt allow us to use it which makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE. Basically they didn't honor this Groupon which is a slap in the face. I ate dinner tonight with my family and a table of 2 was sat next to us within 2 feet of us, I'm being generous saying 2 feet. The manager would not move them, he wanted us to move our table over if we were uncomfortable. The couple moved themselves because they knew it was wrong! I don't know how it took me 2 years to find Shells and Sauce. But, I'm making up for lost time. I ate there 4 times in one week and I have verified that it's not just a fluke - it is awesome. The food and service are incredibly good - with a real neighborhood feel. My first meal was Tortellini Carbonara - the Sauce was just a great balance of garlic, butter, egg, cheese - with great flavor and delicious fresh asparagus and peas. My second meal was chopped salad and Lasagna. The bartender was kind enough to offer me half of the chopped which was more than enough. Great little fried capers added just the right about of salt and crunch to the fresh salad and veggies. The lasagna was amazing. Better than I make. It was a generous portion - but really light and flavorful. Last night I had Veal Parm (best piece of veal I have had in a long time. Tender and perfectly cooked. Today I took a friend for brunch and she had Chicken and Waffles and I went with Penne Carbonara with 2 friend eggs on top. It was outstanding. I'm a dessert guy. I've had their EckMek which was a special during restaurant week, Cannoli, Tiramisu and Flourless Chocolate Cake - all to die for. The host is very welcoming as is the rest of the staff. This restaurant happens also to be a top spot for dates, a family dinner, or just to grab happy hour. Among the residences in the adorable Congress Park, you can't help but feel a part of the neighborhood. Everything from the quaintness of the restaurant to the delicious, hearty meals - it's cozy spot that makes you feel at home. Be warned: the portions are large, hence it being the perfect destination (or at least in theory until you have to be rolled out of there) for a hangover. The excellent service started with the downstairs bartender who was definitely on the ball, and worked with our server to get us transferred to an upstairs table once our group had grown. Our service upstairs was similarly solid. During happy hour, they offer four types of sliders at $3 each. I opted for the Meatball and the Chicken Parmesan ones. They were tasty, and went well with the drinks. For my drinks, I stuck with the nice, cold draft beers being offered. I also had a few bites off of other people's plates. Everything I tried was flavorful and well-prepared. When I had dinner here, we sat outside on the patio and had decent service (nothing to phone home about!) and I ordered the classic spaghetti and meatballs with wine. As mentioned before, Shells & Sauce is a cute Italian bistro known for their classic Italian fare, so I was unsure what to expect during brunch (pasta and eggs kind of weirds me out- this is on the menu though!). The inside of Shells & Sauce is very intimate and what you would think of when the words "Italian bistro" come to mind. Since my friend and I arrived around 11:30 AM, we decided to sit at the bar to avoid a 30 minute wait for a table.The bar was somewhat retro, as the counters were sleek black with colorful circles sporadically placed, which I enjoyed. Disco mindset for a Sunday morning! While we looked at the menu, the pleasing price of $3 for a Bloody Mary really caught my eye. You oftentimes don't find Bloodys for a meager $3 anymore, so I wasn't sure if they would be good or bad. Ahah!... But, Shells & Sauce.... You really executed the $3 Bloody. I ended up having two of the Bloodys, although I could have had even more if I wasn't going to drive a bit later. On a side note, I ordered the Vesuvio Skillet Breakfast with Italian sausage and green chili, which was AMAZING! I've visited Shells and Sauce twice now and both times were for brunch. The first thing I always notice is just how friendly the service is. The hostess and the servers are always pleasant and the service is always fast and efficient. Word to the wise, some of the portions are HUGE! The Vesuvio skillet was really good and huge. I had mine with sausage and marinara sauce. My second time around I had the wild mushroom omelette. This was a much more manageable size for me and it was so freaking good! It was packed with spinach and goat cheese. And it came with a big ol biscuit!! And of course, one can't talk about brunch without talking about the drinks. They make a really good spicy bloody Mary. They don't have bottomless mimosas, but you can get carafes for $10. Great little spot but I need to get back there and try their dinner sometime soon read more

Parking is in the neighborhood most likely because their lot is small. I had the fried ravioli which was good. The brussel sprouts were not cooked enough..very chewy. I like this place. Like, not love. But it's good and worth going to again. I'm originally from Chicago, so it's really hard to find comparable Italian food. But they have a good menu with good food (again, not life-changing, but good). The service was really good the second time, not so much the first time. My only reservation about this restaurant is that when you walk to the bar upstairs, you walk through a hallway and by the kitchen, and everything looks really shabby and dirty. It is not appetizing. Usually a great dinner and brunch spot on most days, I've been here many times without complaints. However GM and disgruntled host Oscar went out of his way to ensure that we had a less than sub-par experience. We put our name in at 11 a.m. on a busy Sunday morning for a party of six. We are told it would be half an hour to 45 minute wait and we were told that the restaurant cannot seat incomplete parties... Nothing out of the norm. But the real kicker is we then proceed to wait over an hour and a half. Then we watch in astonishment while three LARGER and INCOMPLETE parties seat ahead of us. People funnel in 30-40 minutes apart for a parties of 8 and a larger party of 10. All the time we are the only people waiting. No one appreciates being lied to, or feels as if they are at the subject of unequal treatment to other guests. We ask Oscar why this was the case..."why were larger and incomplete parties were seated ahead of us?" He then goes into a flailing tantrum, shows us "time stamps" of when we have arrived and is totally adamant about proving that he was in the right rather than fixing the situation. We then learn that the reason why that the other parties had priority seating was because they made a reservation. Great. Easily could have saved everyone's time and patience with that fact stated earlier. Let me be clear- we thought Oscar was seating guests because he was a host. But to learn that he was the General Manager of the restaurant was very discouraging. Every encounter became a little more frustrating that he was so stubborn and hostile in his arguments. "You should have known!" or "It's not my fault!" are not typically in a restaurant manager's lingo. He was very rude and unaccommodating. A learning experience nonetheless. What I expected from a place called "Shells and sauce". + Mid-scale ambiance - Noisier than expected considering the ambiance/set-up of the restaurant + Hidden upstairs section! Nicely heated & has a bar upstairs, too. +++++ AMAZING FOOD. Portions were generous! Loved the Italian sliders & fried ravioli. Fried ravioli = melted goodness inside crispy skin. Be careful, these can be piping hot! I had the stuffed shells, a vegetarian dish. It was more sweet potato than any other ingredient, but I did not mind that at all. I love shells, I love sweet potato, I love goat cheese. It all sounds like a strange combo, but it works! Dessert: YUM! They had a Greek dessert called "Eckmeck". I love Mediterranean sweets, so I went with that. Flaky Phyllo dough, custard, cream, toasted almonds ... I'd definitely order this again. Finally went to Shells & Sauce after several years of living in the neighborhood. This is undoubtedly a locals' joint with a busy, buzzing, yet comfortable feel where guests and waiters seem to have a genuine rapport. For my visit, one waiter mentioned we'd be seated inside, then after standing idly for 10+ minutes another sat us outside. Not soon after, first waiter reprimands us for being seated remarking, " I told you this was saved for so and so." We offered to move several times, which he declined but remarked about someone's dog or this or that again before walking off. Now, I have years of experience working in food service. It would be a lie if I said I never shamed customers, took out my emotions out on them, or went out of my way to assert my power over them. However, all of those things are absolutely horrendous behavior and is almost always undeserved by the recipient. Professionalism requires you keep comments that will not change the situation to yourself. Now, congratulations, we will never feel comfortable at this establishment. As for the food, the pizza had no sauce, which was okay but it was very over-cheesed. I never thought that was possible, but it was noticeably unbalanced. The pasta was just alright, certainly not worth the $20 price tag for a thin butter sauce in one dish and over cooked noodles in another. Really, I don't understand the appeal. I had delayed my dinner at Shells&Sauce for too long when I showed up on a Tuesday night to a packed house. I sat outside in the cool summer air and waited patiently for my waitress. At Shells&Sauce the wait staff takes turn taking tables instead of servicing sections. While this is most fair to the wait staff and says a lot about how considerate the owners/management are, it delays service in such a big establishment on busy nights. Three people passed me five times before I was brought water and bread. So the four stars are for the service... Because the food was outstanding!!! I had the Chicken Marsala, with a side of asparagus al forno and a side of Alfredo. I try to taste the Alfredo at every Italiano experience, because IMO it doesn't hold up as well as a tomato sauce and they are all very different. The Alfredo at Shells&Sauce is not a traditional Alfredo. It's lacking a bit in seasoning, more cream than cheese and garlic. I topped it all off with a tiramisu which was rich, but balanced the bitter espresso with cinnamon and cream just perfectly. If you're looking for a no miss Italian experience in Denver, this is your spot. I can't imagine anything on the menu being less than satisfactory. read more

We ordered a little bit of everything... hungry girls in the house!! The fried ravioli... to die for. Pepperoni pizza.... the bee's knees!! We got the primavera and the stuffed shells. The bread served before dinner was delicious. Oregano bread, nice and fluffy. The balsamic sauce they serve with it could do with a little less vinegar - careful if you're a sauce lover, less is more with this one. The primavera vegetables were salty and delicious but overall the dish was pretty bland. With regards to the stuffed shells, the sweet potato ones were amazing. The mixture of goat cheese and sweet potato creates a soft sweet flavor. On the other hand, the 4 cheese one was just kind of eh. We thought it sort of had a plastic aftertaste. We were completely stuff but still opted for the flourless chocolate cake. The description mentioned raspberry sauce but our piece was served with chocolate sauce instead for some reason. The cake itself was dense but so rich and delicious. Overall we loved this cake; however the edge was rock solid and a little burnt tasting, so a few bad bites. Overall: just average. Not bad but not amazing. Wouldn't go out of my way to return, but there are other promising sounding entrees I would like to try. read more

I am not sure why this restaurant gets so much hype. It's a half a step better than Olive Garden and double the price. An entree and two very watered down drinks ended up costing me over $50 after tipping. I came here with a large party that made reservations in advance. You would never guess that though because the server was slooooow and very ill prepared. For example, he took 15 minutes to bring water to the table when he could have easily had it waiting at the table. It's not like there was ice in it. Then another 25 minutes for us to receive drinks. We were sitting right by the bartender. They really weren't all that busy so I'm not sure what the hold up was. Our server wasn't rude, but he definitely wasn't attentive and could be best described as aloof. My friend and I ordered the special of the night after the server suggested it. He then returned 10 minutes later to inform us they were out of the special. I ended up ordering the Shrimp Diavolo which was good, but not spectacular. The only stand out item was the table bread. The restaurant could improve if they focused on service. Paying high end prices is fine if it's justified by great food and great service. I received neither. read more

A friend and I were looking for a place for a bite to eat after visiting the "Blossoms of Lights" display at the Denver Botanic Gardens and hit upon Shells & Sauce since it is mere blocks away. It was late enough that we were able to walk-in and be seated immediately, though the place was still pretty lively (or noisy, depending on your state of mind). Tables were pretty cramped, and I ended-up sitting next to a drafty window so had to wear my coat throughout my meal. It was happy hour, though our server didn't mention it until we asked. Wine $4.75 a glass, nothing spectacular but enjoyable nonetheless. We shared one of the happy hour small plates as an appetizer, then ordered entrees off of the dinner menu. Were I to do it over again, I think I might stick to a selection of small plates. Entree portions were pretty substantial, but just not that great. I had the wild mushroom marsala with chicken while my friend had chicken piccata. The marsala sauce was too salty, and apparently the picata too capery. We shared dessert, pumpkin cheesecake with a sort of spiced pecan sauce that the server touted. I appreciated that the cheesecake wasn't overly-sweet, but it was just okay. The best bite of the night was the small plate, though I am chagrined to admit that all I can remember is that it was a bacon-wrapped something or another. My heart burns for you, Shells and Sauce--more appropriately Shell-game and Slop! While typically Mother's Day is not a day to pass any sort of judgment on a place, today's experience at brunch was such a disaster of distaste that that pass gets passed. Indeed, I was extremely impressed by this worst-meal-ever to date , and yes, my heart still burns from indigestion of a new intensity. From concept through execution this place's brunch food was offal?, bad, horrid, disgusting... I ordered a Sunday brunch guilty staple; chicken-fried-steak with gravy, eggs and hash browns. What i got was no less than an utterly amazing cluster-f mess; a large oval plate (see pic) of deep-fried breading with a thick gooey, overly salty, lumpy "gravy" covering a tortured piece of mystery meat the size and color of a Mickey-D single-burger patty all hiding 2-never-to-see-the-sunny-side eggs drowning in a pool of clarified butter along with very sad, cold, greasy, limp, tasteless hash browns...it's okay to retch a little now. My companion, conversely, went purportedly quite simple: a waffle, bacon and fruit. Shell-games and Slop upheld their now predisposed and established nasty-food reputation. The cold, limp, add-water-to-a-dry-mix tasting bland waffle was accompanied by a "compound" Stranahan's whisky butter (this was an unasked for, utterly undesirable, accompaniment of green onions, dried herbs, red-pepper flakes, some whiskey presumably to moisten and assumedly real butter to bind it--what a waste of fine whisky). If it sounds grotesque alone, then the vile taste was even more so on a cold tasteless waffle. The bacon, of okay apple-smoked quality, was limp, cold and dripping of grease. Only the unadulterated blackberries and raspberries were palatable. So much for the simple option. The service, well it was Mother's Day, they were full but not packed; we did not need wait for a table. The server, however, was slow, inattentive and befuddled and did not respond at all to the quite apparent and vocally discussed situation of gastro-disgust. After waiting 20 minutes for a corrected bill--the price charged for the waffle was not the same as the price on the menu, dine-and-dash thoughts dancing through our heads, occurring between visions of a cleansing vomit we gleefully exited into the cold snowy Denver weather. Overall, Shell-game and Slop earns a benchmark 9-out of 10 Tums with a Pepcid AC and Prilosec on-the-side chaser. Yet, It may still earn a coveted 10 if the meal makes a possible regurgitation appearance. This "burning" experience has yet to subside...urp! urp! Oh what a relief it is...so much better a 10 of 10, a perfect score! read more

We gave shells & sauce a chance last Saturday. It's not particularly bad it's just not that good. I've heard a lot of hype but was disappointed. Service was great at the bar and the bartender was super helpful and knowledgeable with helping us pick dishes. Ultimately I would only go back if Angelos (down the street) is too long of a wait. We came for brunch and man the place was packed! That took me by surprise because I didn't know Shells & Sauce was known for breakfast items! Our waiter was a very easy going dude and would wink at us every time we requested something, signaling we're being well taken care of, I liked that! Especially when he worked so hard to "look for" a lasagna for me. You see, I'd read at several places their lasagna is a must-try, but because this is brunch, they don't serve that. After seeing how disappointed I was, our waiter went away and came back with good news: they still had a piece left over from last night. I was desparate to try it so I agreed to have left over food, lol. Then I sort of regreted it and couldn't shake the thought of "what if". What if I'd had it fresh? Would it still have tasted as salty? Nonetheless, the lasagna was HUGE and they used a mixture of fine cheese that after being baked, smelled so good I thought I was having creme brulee! really! The spiked sauce was not my thing, but luckily, my boyfriend liked it. He had the Italian Grilled Cheese and we asked to upgrade the fries to Funnel Fries. What a fun idea! We absolutely loved it! Our friends had that day's specials: Sausage and mushroom omlete with hashbrowns, and Spinach Florentine Benedict with hashbrowns, respectively. Both dishes looked very big and the fact that they finished them all tells me they must be pretty good! Until I come back during dinner time and try the true Italian fare, I'm going to give Shells & Sauce 3.5 stars. read more
