Since my original review more than 2 years ago, I've been back with friends several times. Today, we came for lunch after seeing the "World of Terracotta Warriors" exhibit at the Bowers Museum. Chinese food seemed most appropriate. These friends live in the SGV, so they know good Asian food! We were seated within 15 minutes of joining the Wait List. Our server kindly offered to give us menu suggestions when I mentioned that it was the first time some of our party had been here. We declined. I was happy to see that the menu is more extensive, and that items I had enjoyed were still listed. We started with the 7 Grams Dumplings. My first one had a good amount of soup, but there was less in the 2nd one. The Steamed Chicken Dumplings were tender, but I thought a little bland. Everyone liked the Mapo Tofu. We asked for less spicy, and it was perfect. When I accidentally spilled my cup of hot tea over myself and the table, the server came immediately to make sure I was okay and to clean up the mess. QUICK TAKE// Taiwanese eats at a super reasonable price that is REALLY tasty. Their oolong milk tea was amazing and none of their dishes disappointed! FOOD// pretty much all the dishes we got were great! To start, we got the PIG EAR SALAD IN CHILI OIL DRESSING as an appetizer which was so chunk and satisfying. Shared a XLB spicy along with SCALLION PANCAKES. I didn't get photos of some of the other dishes but the MAPO TOFU has that Szechuan spice which I loved. I was actually so surprised how much I loved their OOLONG MILK TEA, boyfriend got the PASSIONFRUIT GREEN TEA and that confirmed it for me that they know how to do their milk tea's/tea's super well. I would probably just skip the NOODLES IN SCALLION SAUCE - felt like it was lacking something extra in there. SERVICE// Very attentive and quick given that we came on Thanksgiving lunch time! It's been six days since I came here for the first time (writing the review late), and I am still thinking of the golden prime beef noodle soup here because it was soooo good. I wish I could have another bowl now. It is very different from traditional beef noodle soup, but in a good way. The broth is flavorful and tastes faintly of tomatoes. The kale and pickled vegetables combined well with the broth. Noodles were plentiful. The noodles were also spicy! I have a moderate spice tolerance, so I was expecting a "spicy" Taiwanese noodle dish to not be spicy at all, but it turned out to be a good dose of spiciness! As you can see in the picture, there is a lot of chopped chili. My only criticism is that the beef was very thin and chewy. Everything else was perfect. My boyfriend and I thought the crab xiao long bao here were even better than the ones at Din Tai Fung, in that the filling was much softer. The beef roll was quite sweet and oily, so it was a little odd to me but we still enjoyed it. The cilantro and cucumbers inside the beef roll were refreshing. The broccoli in garlic oyster sauce was very simple lol but it was good, and even though I could have easily made it at home, it was nice to have veggies in the meal. Two of us finished all four dishes with no leftovers. We were stuffed by the end. Service was good. The waiters were attentive and polite. I would recommend coming here maybe 5-10 minutes before opening time to put yourself on their waitlist (there's a stand outside their door even before they've opened), so that you can be one of the first parties in. Also make sure that you're there right at opening time; otherwise your name will get skipped when it's called. Interior was very clean and aesthetically pleasing. Love this restaurant. Try to come at least twice a week. Very busy and can be loud. Some of the tables are quite close together so I try to avoid sitting against the wall. The servers are kind and sweet. If there's an issue with the food, they try to make it right. But the food is quite delicious. Can be a short wait but try to come when they first open at 11am. Finally decided to give this spot a try after all the hype from social media. Came on a week night and there was a small line outside. You will need to check in on their iPad to join the queue. Waited about 15 minutes to get seated at the high top table. Ordered their Seven Grams XLB with shrimp, golden beef noodle soup (spicy!), beef rolls, and sesame balls for dessert. My favorite would be the beef rolls & most definitely what I would come back for. The soup had a nice sour kick, and the xlb was pretty good. The jasmine tea and lime tea were refreshing. Service was nice and friendly as well. Prices are fair, for everything we got it was less than $60. read more

I also want to note how affordable the place is! We paid what I think our food was worth and were still able to give our server a good tip without it being too overly expensive. This is a popular place! We came on a weekend a few minutes before it opened and there was already a crowd waiting outside. The staff was very friendly and we we luckily made the cut to get seated right away. The place is clean and beautifully decorated. After looking at the menu, we decided on the cucumber salad, fried calamari, scallion pancake, seven grams XLB, steamed chicken dumplings, and steamed custard buns. Cucumber Salad- The cucumber was fresh and crisp and marinated in a zesty vinaigrette. It server as a wonderful palate cleanser in between dishes! Fried Calamari- I am a huge calamari fan and this is one of the best I've had! The batter had a nice flavor and it was fried to perfection. Paired with sweet chili sauce. Scallion Pancake- Served warm with a nice crisp edge. The dough was very flavorful and the scallions gave it that distinct savory taste. Seven Grams XLB- This is their specialty so we had to try. It was packed with kurobota pork and bursting with flavor. Such a comforting dish on a cold day. Steamed Chicken Dumplings- The filling had a nice, mild flavor. Pairs perfectly with their dumpling sauce and ginger. Steamed Custard Buns- This was a sweet way to end the meal. The bun was soft and fluffy with a rich and creamy filling. My sister and I went to see my niece in Santa Ana, and she and her husband took us to Seven Grams in Tustin. All of the tables appear to be quite near to one another and cramped as soon as I walk into the restaurant. We ordered a beef roll with ground onion, cilantro, cucumber, and beef hoisin sauce, a spicy XLB with ground pork and hot chili sauce, and a wonton with chili sauce, chopped peanuts, and green onion chili thread. Scallion Oil Sauced Noodles with Dry Green Onion and Regular Round Noodles. Lastly, pan-fried dumplings with black sesame, minced pork, and sole fish. Came by during an off hour on a weekend and, as expected, lines were long and the wait was particularly longer because we had a party of five and there's only a few tables available to accommodate us. Nevertheless, it was all uphill from there. Interior is clean, modern, and service was quick. We ordered the Golden Prime Beef noodle soup, the tomato prime beef noodle soup, shredded bean curd, pan fried bun, ham fried rice, scallion pancakes and the XLB. Surprisingly, the fried rice was tastier than we expected. Definitely worth a try if you're hungry (filling and savory). The tomato prime beef noodle soup was also a fan favorite and definitely a must order if you're into tomato's like me. The scallion pancakes were extra crispy and the XLB? Perfection. I highly recommend using Yelp's Check In when dining during peak dinner or weekend hours as this restaurant can be very busy. I have tried the Seven Grams Xiao Long Bao, Pan Fried Dumplings, Wonton with Chili Sauce, Scallion Pancakes, Ham Fried Rice, Mapo Tofu with Rice. Even when its busy their service is quick. Their food comes to the table as soon as it is ready and everything is always hot and fresh. Its a busy restaurant and the tables are close together. The hostess was very kind and showed us the menu as we got sat. We ordered: Seven Gram XLB - 10/10 Spicy Wontons - 9/10 Beef Roll - 8/10 Golden Prime Beef Noodles - 6/10 Roasted Oolong Milk Tea - 10/10 The XLB was comparable to Din Tai Fung, very rich and savory. The Spicy Wontons were also good but the sauce was a bit lacking. I recommend adding more chili oil and soy sauce/vinegar. The Beef Roll has a great crunch and flavor-I just wish there was more substance within the roll itself. Lastly, we ordered the Golden Prime Beef Noodles based off of the plentiful reviews of it being recommended. However, we were honestly disappointed with the flavor. It was almost like a sour and spicy chicken noodle soup broth. Nothing special (to our taste) and there wasn't really anything else notable about it. I will say the noodle texture was great, but just bland. What sets them apart is their amazing customer service. Once I let them know that the noodles were not to our taste, they comped the item for us with no questions asked. They were very understanding and checked in on us often. The xlb is yummy! Nothing extraordinary but definitely solid. The pig ear was yummy. The golden prime beef noodle soup wasn't what I expected but it was still okay. Came here for first time at 1pm on a Tuesday and it wasn't crowded. I was able to order to-go with the hostess. I Ordered the wonton with chili sauce, beef roll, Gyudon (Japanese beef bowl), the Golden Prime Beef noodle soup, and the roasted oolong milk tea 50% sweet. While I was waiting, I had my oolong tea and it was really sweet. I was wondering if he missed the 50% sweet request. The order came out pretty quickly. Before I drove off, I took a piece of the beef roll to try it fresh just in case the crunch got stale by the time I got home. It was crisp, fresh, and delicious. Quite a few green onion bits which flavored it, but if you don't want that breath, they are easy to knock out. The beef bowl was decent, a tad sweet, with decent serving of meat.
