My go to is actually Ying tang as it's close to where I lived. But every so often, I do go towards Plano where this locations is at. Unlike Ying tang, this place offers free rice so that's a good option if you don't want noodles or save the weight of noodles to get other meats and such. I had an absolute amazing experience here. I have not personally really had this type of Chinese hot pot before, with fresh fish and huge flavors in the soup! Wow the staff were really nice, the place was clean! My first time having the Mao Xue Wang, and their signature traditional Laotan Suancai Fish. I love how there was some mala and sourness from the Vege with the fresh fish. I am getting hungry thinking about what I had. You can grab your own chopsticks and napkins from the drawers, you get rice included, and one pot is quite large. Three of us ordered 2 pots and it was already so much! I finally stopped by to try Yonny and I'm glad I did! I tried the Signature Hot Oil Suancai Fish ($19.95), Traditional Laotan Suancai Fish ($17.95 + $2 for Snakehead), and Coconut Lava Balls ($6.95). I was afraid that both of these flavors would taste similar, but they weren't! Honestly, I don't know which one I liked more and will probably order both every time I come. If you like a more sour flavor, go with the Traditional Laotan Suancai Fish. I paid the premium to get that one with Snakehead Fish and I highly recommend doing that because it tastes so much better. I love that this place gives you rice with your order and you have the option to choose between white or purple rice. I felt the portion was great considering it was a take-out order. The Coconut Lava Balls were also really good and not too sweet. The restaurant itself looks nice for dining in. The one thing I was not a fan of was the lady who was working and only spoke Mandarin even though I was signaling how I do not understand what she's saying. She can apparently speak some English to another person who was picking up a DoorDash order, but when it came to me, it seemed like she expected me to understand her. Even when I was paying at the register, the screen was all written in Chinese... I didn't even know which button to click to say "pay" or "okay" and she just seemed annoyed that I was confused. I've already been here 3x since they opened. It's my new favorite spot. The broths are so flavorful. The traditional laotan fish with snakehead fish is my favorite so far. You order by scanning the QR code at the end of the table and submitting it. Napkins and chopsticks are in the pullout drawer under the table, but they give the soup spoons when they serve you. If you order the large, you can share with another person since it comes with two bowls of rice. It's a much better price than ordering two different bowls separately. I'm gonna have to warn you that even if you can tolerate spice, I would rethink ordering the one with green peppercorns. I came for lunch and was surprised to see that the restaurant was completely full, even though they just opened a few weeks ago. I ordered their most popular dish - Traditional Laotan Suancai Fish. It had a one pepper spice level, so I was a little worried it might be too much for me, but it turned out to be perfect. The regular bowl looks deceptively large and is a generously portioned for one person. Rice, either white or purple, comes with it. Loved the flavor of the dish. You can get it with basa fish or pay $2 for snakehead (I chose basa and was perfetctly happy). If you like that numbing peppercorn experience, there's their second most popular dish, the Green Peppercorn Suancai Fish (two pepper spice level), perfect for my husband. Service was attentive (though there are some kinks - they brought by a couple of dishes that weren't ours). The restaurant is very clean, bright and modern. They did a great job of remodeling the dark Indian restaurant that was here previously. While we were eating, my husband was already thinking about what he was going to order on our next visit. I reeeeally wanted to like this place but too many things happened. Starting off with my dish going to another table where I saw the guy moving things around in the bowl and letting the waitress know it's not his dish. She then just took the bowl and gave it to me, even though the guy had used his chopsticks to eat rice and used them to move things around in the bowl. The owner/manager(?) was kind enough to replace it and get me a new one, but unfortunately I found a fly floating in the soup! I had already eaten most of it so we just let the owner/manager know about it. He just gave the excuse of it being in the soup because we were under a vent. Which made no sense since I think I actually saw the fly earlier in the soup but at the time I thought it was seasoning :( My review is not a one star because the flavor of the soup was actually really good. It definitely has some heat though, so if you're spice-sensitive, be prepared (or be prepared to sweat a lot like I did lol). We ordered Yonny's version (called "Signature Hot-Oil Suancai Fish" on their menu), and it absolutely delivered in both spice and flavor. We also tried the Mao Xue Wang dish, a hearty Sichuan stew loaded with meats, tofu, vegetables, and blood curd, all swimming in a chili-oil-heavy broth with a good amount of numbing heat. Since they've just opened, there's still a bit of chaotic soft-opening energy, but the food itself is very solid. They also offer takeout if you want to enjoy this at home. If you enjoy bold Chinese flavors, Yonny is a great new addition to Irvine, and I'm already looking forward to coming back to try more of the menu.
