I hate to leave a one star review for this restaurant as we have been here many times. We have always had good service and loved the quality of the food and the ambiance of the environment. But last night was totally different. $605 for four people before the tip which I normally would have left 20% or $120 on top of. That would have brought the total to $725. That's $181/ person. Well I actually tipped $75 and afterwards felt like a chump for even tipping that much. The food quality was good. We had the Peking duck and a host of other items. All good. But the service??? Not so much. It started out great. The food came quickly and there were plenty of wait staff helping arrange plates and make sure everything was good. But it was like they turned off the service light switch. Our tea and a bottle of wine were set up on a cart situated behind our table. The server did finally show up one time. But it was to serve our tea to the table next to us. That table was complaining afterward as they had ordered a different flavor tea. So we ended up all night serving ourselves both the tea and the wine. No sigh of anyone. Not a single check-in to see how we were doing. I finally had to go find the server to get the bill. I did complain to the manager on the way out. He said they were very busy and he hoped we would give them another chance. The problem? They were not that busy. Hurt me once. Shame on you. Hurt me twice. Shame on me. Pretty anemic response to the concerns of a table of four that spent that much money at the restaurant. If you look at my reviews on Yelp I don't usually knock businesses. I try to find the good in their efforts. But folks, if you want to play in the high end market, you need to up your game. Treat customers like you want them to come back. read more

Absolutely loved this place. We came for the Peking duck and it did not disappoint. The tableside flaming presentation was such a fun touch. The duck skin was thin, delicate, and perfectly crispy, while the meat was tender and juicy. Rolling it in the crepes with the condiments was perfection. They recommended pairing the crispy skin with brown sugar and it was honestly so good. The smoked duck was insanely good on its own. Everything else we tried was great too. The okra dish was really tasty and beautifully plated. The wonton soup was light and delicate, and the golden fish soup was straight fire. The Szechuan beef tasted very authentic with the right amount of heat, and the crispy shrimp was a standout. We ended with dessert and it was worth the wait of 30 mins.The peppercorn ice cream was unique and delicious, and the red bean cake (which takes about 30 minutes) was excellent. Chang'an opened up around the end of the COVID era, and I've been coming here on and off for a few years. One thing I really enjoy about this place is the unique architecture, which is beautiful and elegant while still fitting the contemporary feel of the restaurant. The food quality is always top-notch and the service has consistently been excellent. This restaurant is my go-to spot for authentic high-end Shaanxi cuisine. I came this time with my family for lunch, and the space was fairly empty at this hour so we were seated quickly. Menus were brought over along with a complimentary plate of guokui pita, which is always a nice touch. Every dish we ordered was cooked perfectly and tasted just as great as I remembered. I especially recommend the crispy pork ribs, the pork belly sliders, and the lamb stew with pita, which are all regional specialties you don't see often. Their duck specialty is also amazing, but you need to reserve it in advance. It is carved and served table-side, which adds to the experience. If I had to point out one drawback, it would be the size of the tables. The plates here are quite large, and the small round tables can only comfortably fit about three dishes at once. As a result, you either have to eat fairly quickly or constantly move plates around to make space. But this isn't an issue at their larger rectangular tables. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for truly authentic and upscale Chinese cuisine. You will not find your typical orange chicken here. But 10/10 for the experience of them setting the duck on fire. It was our first time at Chang'An, and we're officially in love. We ordered the Duck with the Fire Show, and it was incredible. The meat was tender, full of flavor, and the presentation was so fun to watch. My little boys couldn't get enough of the Peking Duck and were so sad we could only order one per table. This place is definitely a break the bank restaurant or a special occasion place unless you're balling. All the entrees are around $40+. We came here for the flaming duck (must make a reservation for it) which is roughly $140. This itself was pretty worth it imo. They light the entire duck on fire for you then they cut it into bite size pieces. They cut half and then they smoke the other half which i thought was really good! Other entrees we ordered crispy squab - 1/5, pretty lackluster compared to the duck. $50 for 1 squab, bits of it were dry. never again. charcoal tofu - 3/5 pretty good but it's just fried tofu that they made black duck wonton soup- 2/5 - soup itself was bland and could only taste the cilantro, the duck wontons were good though green chili chicken w/ hand pulled noodles 4/5 - worth getting again. Good spice on the entree and the noodles had a great que que to it. spicy chicken cubes 3/5 - probably one of the best i've had, the chicken cubes were a lot longer/bigger, but for the price it was not double the quality of other restaurant versions of this. The service was hit and miss during the night. I flagged down two people to order and then right around when our duck was going to be served someone came to take our order. This place is by far the worst service and over priced places we have been. The staff is rude and management unresponsive. We came here for a slotted Thanksgiving meal. They rushed us so much by bringing every food possible within the first 5 minutes after repeatedly asking them can we bring out the drinks first. Spoke to their manager and explained our issue, and 5 minutes later they came back and kept it going even after we repeatedly asked them to just slow down for a little bit. The strange thing I noticed is we were the only non-Chinese party in this restaurant, my wife is Persian and they served all the other groups who were all Chinese with courtesy and the usual speed of service at a normal restaurants. If you would like a show with your peking duck this is the place, the duck was set on fire! But you need to make sure you call in advance and prebook it, you cannot order it on the spot. The peking duck is Beijing style not Taiwan style that a lot of places in America do. It comes with a few steps, first you watch the chef prepare the duck for you and you eat it normally with all the additives, cucumbers, green onions and sauce. You can always ask for more too. Then they smoke some of them, which had an apple wood flavor, I personally like the unsmoked version though. After that they will take the rest of the duck and prepare another dish with the leftovers. It is definitely on the pricer side but it is hard to find peking duck that is actual Beijing style with the small crepes and not the buns. The best part of the dinner was the roast duck. The order of duck comes a whole show. The cutter starts off by setting the duck a blaze, then cuts the duck into two plates. One of the plates is then smoked. The duck was good but you can get better in Rowland heights although it won't come with a whole show. We also ordered the lychee shrimp. The dish comes with fried lychee and shrimp. The lychee provides a unique pleasant play on a sweet and sour flavor. However the dish is quite small for almost $40. We finished with dessert where we ordered, 'I am peach'. It comes out with dry ice flowing out. It's a gorgeous sight for this gorgeously crafted dessert. And on top of that the chef table put the tip jar right at the front of the duck performance table, every single one of our picture has that ugly tip jar in the front so we had to crop each picture, I'm really not sure if this feels right. The duck is very expensive already and on top of that we tipped generously, is that really necessary to stick that tip jar to your face? Just fyi, we still did tip in the cash jar as it felt like we almost had to... but if you are doing that, make sure your service is top notch, the guy performing we told him let us get the camera ready (we had older parents with us and they also want to take photos but slower in getting ready), he completely disregarded our request and just quickly did his own thing. No smile, no hi, no explanation, not even waiting for us. Our biggest complaint, which I noticed was also similar to many of other Yelp reviews, the service level is just not there. And multiple times we got interrupted by server during our private conversation, and when they switch out the plates instead of server putting on our table, we were asked to pass the plates...? When the tea was served, they poured crossing our hand when we were getting the food, what if the hot tea spilled? For this price range, I suggest you train your staff much longer and much better. Or get a professional manager in here to train, the service was definitely not matching the cost.
