"You can take the rat out of Hong Kong, but you can't take the Hong Kong out of the rat" If you've got some disposable income, and want to see a really nicely decorated restaurant, some cool electronic name tags, and a burning duck show, then Chang'an is the place to be. Otherwise, there's an abundance of service and attention given to your table, but at times it is awkward and there are some missteps. For example, taking away the drink menu before I've decided to order, leaving finished dishes on the table, and not re-folding napkins when we rise to go to the bathroom (yes, you better believe this is standard expectation at these prices). There were a few items that looked really good, but after $118 on the Duck, I just couldn't do $38 on crispy beef tongue, or Mapo Tofu $32, or ghost pepper fried rice $48. We regretted ordering the Sea Bass with chili in stone pot for $78... it was good - an amazing array of mainly sweet and sour flavors, but the volume of fish was low to justify that charge. The burning duck - Must order in advance! A dedicated chef appears from the kitchen to pour rice wine over then light the fuse for a three second spectacle. It looks cool, and then the chef guy meticulously carves small slices on two plates. We wrap the duck into small rice paper tortillas, scoop on oyster sauce, add leeks, small slivers of celery and pear and voila! a very delicious mini duck roll. I ended up eating four of these. On the second duck plate, they cover it with a cylindrical glass cover, then influse in smoke for an edgier, less gamey flavor. Interesting. Hot Tip: The server asked us whether we would like the duck carcass to be used for bone broth won ton soup, or for something else on rice. An option to not have either wasn't really articulated so we presumed that this was part of the duck show. Upon receiving the bill we realized that a polite nod costed us another $26. Truffle Crystal Prawns with hand made noodles A low flavor dish with noodles that are more sticky and limp than you would expect for a hand-made dish. Truffle is a little imperceptible and overal taste sensations have to search hard for anything strong. Chang Braised Beef thin noodle soup The noodles are thin, but medium wide and beef is tender and falls apart easily. I liked this dish but was getting bloated at the same time. Sauteed Celery with Dried Shredded Tofu Nothing too special by palate or presentation. I've definitely tasted deeper flavors for this combo. Durian special Like a white mousse, topped with exactly three raspberries. Durians not for me, but the flavor is quite subtle so if you're ever going to try this stinky fruit, this may be your best chance. I'm very certain not ever coming back here, well, if someone else foots the bill then okay, ummm.... That's all... read more

Came here with family to celebrate Lunar New Year. We were a large party and had reservations. Great service, we had a few servers for our table and they were all very attentive and also patient with the young ones in our party. I've had the duck before and it is just as good as I remembered. The kids enjoyed the short fire show. We ordered a lot of dishes and they were not bad, and the flavors were good, but they could have cut back on the salt and sauces on most of them. The only dishes that were not too salty were the veggies, wagu, duck, vegetable fried rice and steamed fish. The lobster was good but also too salty. The steamed snapper was supposed to be live and it was the most expensive dish of the night costing over 1/3 of the entire bill, but my dad who has eaten a lot of steamed fish in Asia says the fish tasted frozen. I did think the fish tasted a bit fishy even before my dad's comment. It is a bit hard to find dishes for young kids here. There aren't any relativity plain dishes for kids other than the vegetable fried rice. The kids also liked to eat the plain pancake wraps meant for the duck. All in all we had a mainly enjoyable dinner but it was definitely not worth the extreme price tag. I think I would come back for the duck only. read more

Strong points for this place are their Beijing duck and their service. You get the combination of the two when the duck is presented tableside: torched to finish off the preparation of the duck with the first plate served with just the crispy skin of the duck, and subsequent plates served of the meat with the skin on. The accompaniments (celery, cucumber, scallions, hoi sin sauce) and pancakes are served with the duck. Since they have this policy of only 1 duck per table, it is best to have no more than 6 at your table so that each person can get ample duck to enjoy. It is one of the best Beijing ducks you can get in the LA/OC. The other dishes were good but not amazing, with the exception of the noodle dish. That one was quite tasty. The service here was excellent, probably the best I've ever experienced at any Chinese restaurant in all of Southern California. If you ever wanted a fine dining experience from a Chinese restaurant, then this one would be it. Our bill came out to $175.00 per person, which included tax and 25% gratuity. Pricey. I have to agree with the lower ratings. This place is overpriced Chinese food. It's not your PF Chang version. They use pepper corn and cumin. Dishes are tasty but not spicy. Presentation looks good but portion are half of what I expected. For two people you'd have to order at least 3 dishes. I ordered the consome soup, fried shrimp with lychee, stir fry beef and veggies plate. The only dish that was good was the fried shrimp with lychee. It would have been nice if the portion was enough for even one. Ambiance and decor was impressive for being in Tustin. You can tell owner spent a lot of money on the build out. Most reviews talks about Peking duck. I didn't ordered it bcs I don't think it's worth it. How is it any different from the ones from 99 Ranch which cost a fraction of the cost? This was, without a doubt, the worst dining experience I've ever had. The place might look stylish on the outside, but don't let the aesthetics fool you--this place is all flash and no substance. But what truly shocked and appalled me was the service. Our waiter yelled at my aunt, who is hard of hearing, as if her condition was some kind of inconvenience to him. The duck is the only reason to call beforehand, make a reservation for one single solitary duck per table, pay the eye watering $140.00 for three rectangular smallish plates of duck: one with the famous lacquered skin of the duck, two heated with tea lights with the perfectly-cut meat (one plain and one applewood smoked for the lightest of smoke flavors). The duck is entirely worth the effort and cost. Chang 'An can't be described as a typical high end OC restaurant, though the prices are high, the table cloths are heavyweight, and the outside and foyer decor are majestic. The kitchen is loud and cacophonous, the servers wear battery powered name tags that stream their names like a Vegas smoke shop, and the tip jar on the flaming duck cart is pre-stuffed and primed with ones and a ten dollar bill. When inquiring about the menu choices, the server is kind but comically unhelpful. He responded "the two you're asking about are completely different! One is cold and the other is hot!" Regarding another query, he noted, "also completely different! One is dry and the other is sauced!" Oooookay. Eventually, I think I caught that the advice centered around the star of the show. When inquiring about the chili sesame sauced cold cucumber and noodle salad, he pointed to his throat, motioned up and down, and said, "it's hot, spicy hot." This place is beautiful and honestly only recommend for special occasion because if you come here hungry, you definitely leave here starving. I really like the pecking duck and all the service that was there. I would probably only go for that. The skin of the duck was different, Like many other people, the portions are small. Another comment is the ghost pepper fried rice, although it was good, definitely not worth $40 when you can make it better at home. So there seems to be a lot of varying reviews here, but I would say that as OC residents, we are lucky to have an upscale Chinese restaurant like Chang'an here in our backyard. It's worth noting that there are also two other locations in Vancouver and in San Gabriel - two cities known for their Chinese food. I'd rather not have to drive over an hour to the SGV to go to a similar restaurant. That aside, I'll start off by saying what is hopefully obvious - this is not your ordinary Chinese restaurant. They're trying to elevate every item on the menu, but still staying within arm's length of tradition. Onto the review though, we had a phenomenal experience for a large group on a Saturday night. Reservation process: I worked with Lin to make our large group reservation and he was professional, patient, accommodating and not pushy at all while I took a few days to decide. My wife and I stopped by the restaurant a week beforehand - Lin gave us a tour and showed us all of the potential spaces where we could have our group seated - both the private rooms and the specific areas in the various dining rooms. Ambiance: The owners spared no expense on this buildout. The restaurant is dimly lit, with traditional Chinese interior design. It feels upscale, but still relaxed. While we had our own room, I would say that the dining room was not overly loud. Sure, there might've been a group or two celebrating and having a good time, but nothing out of hand or out of the ordinary.. Service: Lin also served as the lead server for the evening and he had a dedicated team for our group. He elevated our experience in many ways, from his honest opinions about which items to order to sharing the background of everything from the origins of the tea to details of the multi-day preparation process for items like the roasted duck and the roasted beef short rib (both of which I'd highly recommend). And about the chrysanthemum tea, yes, it was $28, but it's some of the best tea you'll ever taste - no hyperbole. Lin can give you the background and the origins behind that, too. The staff must have refilled our tea 10+ times. Totally worth it. Food: Lin guided us on what to order and also ensured that we didn't over-order any specific dishes, which we really appreciated. We ended up ordering a lot of the popular items, and we also opted for 3 seafood specials of the night. Of course, they brought the live seafood to show us before cooking it. Here's what we ended up ordering: 1) Chang'an Roasted Duck - the duck is prepared 2 different ways and you get a wonton soup. 2) Cold Dressed Okra with house special sauce 3) Crispy Beef Tongue 4) Roasted Beef Short Rib 5) Australian Lobster prepared in the house special fried chili style (seafood special) - you get 2 dishes from this, the 2nd one being a lobster fried rice. 6) Spot Prawns prepared steamed with the house sauce (seafood special) 7) Thornyhead Grouper (seafood special) 8) King Mushroom casserole 9) Crispy Black Tofu with house special sauce 10) Chef Selection Japanese Wagyu Fried Rice 1Seasonal Vegetables We didn't order any dessert items because we brought our own cake, but wouldn't hesitate to try some next time. Our party enjoyed EVERY single dish. OK, maybe the seasonal vegetables were ordinary, but we were just trying to get our veggies in. Everything was delicious, presented beautifully and not greasy/oily at all. I think the standouts were the Australian Lobster, Spot Prawns, Thornyhead Grouper, Beef Short Rib and Crispy Beef Tongue. Summary: If you can appreciate fine Chinese food and are willing to pay a different price point, you'll be rewarded with a memorable dining experience. It's worth bringing a large group here for special occasions, but also great if you just want to treat a smaller group to a nicer meal. Drinks: JingWei Fu Tea - Drank 4 cups of this as we paid $28 for the pot and I wasn't going to let that go to waste. Was it worth it? Probably not Lychee Lemonade - Super tasty, just not a fan of how expensive non-alcoholic drinks are (not just here but everywhere) Appetizers: Crispy Beef Tongue - I really enjoyed this as it was a unique preparation of beef tongue I hadn't had before. The breading was really tasty and light Honey Grapefruit Spare Ribs - Didn't really taste the grapefruit. Was a good dish, but eventually became too sweet. It sat unfinished at our table for a while Vegetables: Stir Fried Green Bean w/ Eggplant - Probably one of my favorite vegetable dishes of all time. One of our friends noted that this is one of those times where it's not that I don't like eggplant, it's that it was never cooked properly. This really set a bar. Spicy Stir-Fried Wild Mushroom Morels w/ Shanghai Bok Choy - Was okay, not my favorite. Wouldn't recommend getting. Entrees: Roasted Duck - We did the reservation for table service. Value wise, I think the show + the two ways it was prepped was definitely worth it. They do a cherrywood smoke infusion for half the duck slices. I prefer the traditional, but all the BBQ lovers at our table preferred the cherrywood. Both were v tasty. Pan Fried American Wagyu w/ House Special Sauce - This was an okay dish, it came out cooked medium to medium-well. American Wagyu is never anything to write home about. Sea Bass w/ Chili in Stone Pot - A unique and tasty dish. Quickly devoured by our table. They have a 2 hour limit, we came in at 5pm on a Saturday and they pushed us out at 7pm even though the entire restaurant was empty. We had to down our drinks and leave. As an avid Peking duck enjoyer, I found the experience of dining here to be sublime and a highly necessary experience for any duck enthusiast. The duck they serve is like the wagyu of duck. It was large and plump, perfectly roasted such that the skin was glossy smooth and shatteringly crisp, like the hardened sugar on top of a crème brûlée. Unlike standard roasted ducks, the texture of the skin was entirely even, delicately thin, and not lined with a thick layer of solid rubbery fat-- the fat was beautifully marbled throughout the meat and rendered into the flesh, permeating every piece with rich, melty duck goodness. Yet nothing about it was overly greasy or unctuous. Every piece of the meat itself was uniformly tender and juicy. The waiter took his time extracting every single shard of meat from the duck and presenting it in carefully arranged piles. Half of the meat was meticulously carved into delicate thin slices, while the other half was carved and then smoked in an interesting contraption that imbued the meat with smoky flavor. Certainly a spectacle to behold. The presentation of every dish, the dining accoutrements, and the decorations of the restaurant were all exquisite. The interior was dark and highly atmospheric, resembling a museum displaying artifacts from ancient China's grandest imperial eras. If you would like to order the duck/side service duck you must order a day ahead/make reservations. The duck is $118 and it's a good amount. A whole duck was a decent amount for 11 people at our table to share. I think maybe a whole duck would be good for 8 people of course along with other dishes. The duck comes with pancake wrappers, cucumbers, scallions, and duck sauce. The duck table service put on a show for us! Lighting up the duck on fire in front of us and smoking the duck. So you get roasted duck and smoked duck to eat. I thought it was kind of "interesting" that the table service worker had a tip jar, being in a classy upscale restaurant it felt out of place. I hope some of the tip we give on the bill goes over to him. The duck is definitely a must get when coming here, very tender! We ordered multiple dishes as well, such as the crispy beef tongue, vegetable dumplings, prawns and lychee stir fry, Crispy fried chicken fillets, pan fried American wagyu, and tofu soup. Besides the duck I would recommend crispy beef tongue! Juicy and tender! And the lychee prawns! Only because the fried lychee covered in batter and house sauce was so unique and tasty! I would not recommend the crispy chicken fillets, it is mainly batter, fried chicken skin, very little meat. It is also super spicy and will leave your tongue tingling! I also wouldn't recommended the tofu soup, this one was also super spicy and left your tongue feeling itchy. The hype is true about this joint. I am really impressed by their oriental interior. However just remember there's like a $100 duck waiting for you there. The crepes accompanied with the duck is rare as well as the fresh garnishes. I have just dined here for the third time in 2 months and decided the restaurant truly deserves my 5 star review. Chang'an is a low key fine dining Chinese restaurant tucked unassumingly in the back of French-inspired Plaza Lafayette. It is so low key I must have driven by a million times and missed its signage along Newport Blvd. I typically avoid larger scale Chinese restaurants my experience were mostly of smells I'm not fond of and loud patrons in shorts and flip flops screaming over each other in conversations. So I am pleasantly surprised by this gem of a place. Prior to dining here, I was told their menu is overpriced for a Chinese restaurant. Yes, it's true when one wants to compare with the likes of xxx garden/city/harbor where servers bring you ice water with their fingers dipped into the filled glasses or they shout orders to their colleagues on the other end of the restaurant. Chang'an is so quiet it is music to my ears. The interior design and decor definitely sets the tone here. From the traditional Chinese lattice windows hanging from the high ceiling and as room dividers, warm lighting over dining tables set with crisp white table linens and sparkling wine glasses, modern style Quanyi chairs and generous booth seats with silk cushions, and plentiful intimate tables for two, this establishment blew me away. And the fact that it is located in Tustin is my icing on the cake. Sure there are typical big round tables with glass lazy Susans that can seat 8 or more, they are few and strategically placed and not make up the entire restaurant floor like all other Chinese restaurants who just want to herd you through your meals. The terracotta and porcelain artifacts used as decor are interesting and not overdone, hence give off the "museum" vibe many commented. I must add the restaurant's entrance with its height lays the groundwork, not to mention the elegant foyer that greets you when you come through the doors and through the magnificently hand carved traditional wooden gate. The offerings on its 8 page menu is so extensive and some quite exquisite, anyone will find something enticing. Then there's the Peking duck, don't get me started but it's what my dreams are made of as a duck gastronome. From my three visits with family and group of friends, I have sampled a good portion of the menu. The prices are definitely not your typical China Gate or Happy Harbor prices but this restaurant isn't typical. Chang'an does not bring to your table a platter of chow mein spilling over nor chewy stir fried beef on a hot plate or bitter jasmine tea with tea leaves afloat in a chipped grimy porcelain teacup. By the way, their flavored teas start at $28 but it will be the most zestful Chinese teas you've ever had. I would gladly afford the distinctive quality here. Although I must say that some dishes like Mapo tofu can certainly use a makeover in its presentation; although very delectable, it lacks luster in a generic soup pot. The service team deserves mention with their elevated serving style, communication and are frequently checking on you. I hope this place stays classy because I plan to make it my go-to Chinese restaurant in OC. read more

They made my customized drink good as requested . Then a light delicacy dish Sea Cucumber with Millet, can't find it anywhere else. Beautiful textured millet with house special stock, very clean and subtle. Sea cucumber was so juicy and bouncy . Main dishes were Stir fried wild chilies and sliced beef, Deep fried eggplant with Spicy Sweet and Sour Sauce. The beef was perfectly prepared with crunchy cilantro and different kinds of chilis. The eggplant was also amazing with light and crispy coating made from scratch, good balance of sweet and sour along with hints of garlic. Finished the meal with made to order red bean cake. Our family has been here for every major Chinese holiday. Of course, that includes the Lunar New Year which we celebrated on 2/1 (Sat) dinner. The food is as usual. Decent but not memorable. However, the service was subpar. With a family of four, we spent ~$550 there. With this much money spent, I expect excellent service esp this is what the restaurant advertised for! Tonight, the server constantly kept us waiting. And, there was no one to refill our water or tea. We only had the cup that was given to us at the beginning of the meal. But after we drank it, that was it! Empty cup for the rest of the night. We had to call our server multiple times to get our needs met. For a restaurant that advertised itself as high end formal dining, it should train its servers up to the standard. Also, btw this is Lunar new year. And traditionally, in Chinese culture, we'd eat red bean rice cake. BUT, the server did NOT warn us that it'd take 30 min to make it, so we must order ahead. So, we ended up cancelling the order and not eating it. The service is really not up to standard. Please please train your serve to at least match your pricing and ambience. We booked a room for a party of 10. It was a minimum spend of $150/person & for a party of 10, they still stick to their 1 duck per table policy. Unfortunately, I didn't think the duck was that great except for you get to see it light on fire! I think Ji Rong and Duck House in SGV are probably better options. We got to try a lot of dishes to hit the minimum $1,500 spend. I would say nothing was really impressive except the potstickers were fried with a great crispy skin. It's rather upscale, but they were pleasant even though we were not very dressy. Elegant, dark decor, creates a hushed environment, kind of the opposite of most "duck houses" of my experience. The duck must be preordered and when we were seated, we were told it would be another 30 minutes before it was ready. We ordered beers, no drafts. We went to order the dumplings, but they are not offered, so the waiter suggested potstickers, which we ordered. As we waited for water, needed to ask a few times, they brought an interesting app of bread, a red sauce, ?fremented bean paste?, and a three tiny bowls things, one, fermented beans, the others, something pickled? We added the eggplant and string beans. Lo and behold, the duck arrived, the table side flame was brief, but more than likely helped make it crisp. The chef first carves a plate of skin. That is presented with a bowl of sugar for dipping. Very crispy and flavorful, but very rich with the duck fat. Second plate, skin and meat. The pancakes were in a steamer, thin, a bit stuck, but didn't tear. Sauce, plum, onions, cucumber, and pear slivers. The last two helped deal with the rice duck fat. The server then smoked another pile of duck and skin, kind of like a fancy cocktail. The meat and skin and stuff, was nice, but very rich. And I think my partner was grumpy that the duck alone was $118. The potstickers showed, a tray of think little, dumplings about the size of a finger. Decent. The string bean and eggplant was a small dish, eggplant was little fried sticks. Decent, but not super spicy. No rice just shows up. I guess we were unprepared, but it was not really worth the coin. Would not recommend this place for young ones or the elderly, it is not very accessible or safe. I brought my 91 year old grandma here for a special dinner. She is not as mobile as she used to be. While walking in, the aisle to our table was very narrow since there were empty foldable table stands left out. Three servers watched as I supported my grandma toward the table and did not try to make room for us or get out of the way themselves. While bringing large, hot dishes out to our table, they repeatedly served over my grandma's shoulder. We deliberately sat on the side of the table, away from the aisle so it did not make sense for them to come around and serve dishes on her side. She enjoyed the food, particularly pointing out how tender the short rib was, but I was disappointed at the service we received for the price we were paying. read more

Came here for my girl friend's birthday & loved the ambiance. It was definitely a fine dining experience with lots of thought + effort put into their food. I can see why the cost is so high, as everything is done efficiently & up to standard. The interior is stunning, plus they have extremely beautiful dishes/plating. My only complaint is that my friend had preordered all the dishes prior to arriving at the restaurant to ensure she was able to try everything she wanted to. After we had arrived, they said they had sold out of the fish dish she wanted - which is absurd because why did we even bother calling in to preorder? Why would they sell to someone else if we had reserved everything in advance on the phone? Shouldn't someone have called us back before we got there to offer replacements? It was just very messy & not professional. Otherwise, I would have given them an additional star because you can see the effort they put into each dish. They might not be as authentic or as spiced as we like, since the flavors are slightly more Americanized for the western taste palette. Other than that, the desserts, food, & ambiance were all a 10/10. They even gave a free noodle dish to my friend to celebrate her birthday (in Chinese it's auspicious). Get the duck, skip the veggies! THE DUCK (reservation only - $118) The duck is professionally lit up and sliced in front of your table. The waiter gives you the option of having the meat by itself or gently smoked, the first being my preferred. The dish comes with thin crepe-like wrappers, sliced pear, cucumbers, scallions and a slightly sweetened duck sauce. The tip jar next to the duck was a little off-putting but there was no additional pressure to add to it. GET THIS: 1. Matsutake Duck Wonton Soup ($8 / per person) - wontons were plump, soup was rich and full of flavor. topped off with rehydrated seaweed + dried shredded egg + scallions. 2. Peppercorn Ice Cream ($8) - surprisingly delicious pairing between peppercorn and vanilla. good item to share as flavor is not for everyone. WORTH TRYING: 1. Wok Fried Cumin Duck Bone ($22) - classic cumin pepper seasoning. mainly for sucking flavor from the bones, but not a lot of meat (since they used all the meat in your duck and wonton dish) 2. Chang'an Braised Beef Thin Noodle Soup ($22) - nice umami flavor + slight tingle from mala oil. good item to fill up on. CAN SKIP: 1. Stir Fried Green bean with Eggplant ($22) - good wok hei + crispy veggies. great execution and presentation, but still slightly overpriced. 2. Sautéed Chinese Celery with Dried Shredded Tofu ($20) - dish was good, but overpriced. Great attention to detail went into the dining experience and the service. Our waiter was eager to introduce the dishes as they came out one by one and thoroughly explained how to eat/ pair the dishes. The restaurant decor was extremely impressive and eye opening. The walls, the partitions, the artifacts and the paintings all embodied Chinese culture. Overall a pleasant experience despite the high-priced menu. read more

Stunning decor & atmosphere. The service is very good, attentive and served quickly and yes our bill reflected the service, decorations and meal. We came here very late on Sunday, the Peking Duck was sold out. The staff were eager to please and we anticipated a good experience! We did not order much food. The lychee prawn balls and cold noodle are very delicious! Waitress recommend one must try dish is Old Shanghai Style Smoked Fish, but we just had several bites. I and my friend from Shanghai would not recommend it. I might come back to try their flaming Roast duck. read more

Peking Duck - service was ok; duck was torched and smoked right in front of us. Duck was thinly sliced and served with crepe-like wrapping paper, sliced onions, leek, cucumber, and hoisin sauce. Meat was very plain and not that much. Serving size said 8-11 people but our party of 5 (3 adults, 2 kids) ate everything and did not get full. Very overpriced for what we got! Wonton duck soup - they said they used the duck carcass to cook the broth. Soup had 2 duck wonton per bowl + seaweed. Broth was plain and clean. Beef tongue - tongue was very tender. Coated and fried in a breadcrumb batter; served with sweet and sour chili sauce. Decent appetizer. Seasonal fish (steamed) - steamed in soy sauce + sesame oil sauce and topped with fresh onions. Meat was tender. Best dish of the night. Overpriced ($150) but we still got more out of this than the Peking duck! Service was decent; made a reservation and came in and got seated right away. We ordered a pot of peach green tea ($28) and our waiter continuously poured us tea! read more

My mom realllllly wanted to come. So we did. Highlights: Duck was amazing and so was the cilantro salad Everything else, MEH. I personally love lamb but I didn't like how they prepared it. My stepdad loved it but not me. The cold noodle salad was spicy, like really spicy, which was a shame because if it was a little less, everyone could enjoy it more. Wagyu fried rice-my boyfriend said it was nothing special, not enough seasoning Pumpkin dessert- waited over 25 minutes for this.... don't know if it was worth it.
