We were sat next to the service door where you could hear everything even the waiter I had was yelling at someone and it was definitely not appropriate. Food was... just not good at all. We ordered several dishes and maybe 1 was decent. A lot of it went untouched because it just wasn't good. We were actually wishing we had gone to capital seafood or Panda Express during the meal. The prices were insanse. A pot of tea, min $24. Soda, $5. Bowl of soup min $20. We were willing to try though because we were so excited when we walked in. I'll pay $$$$ if the food is worth it. The service was not what you'd expect for a restaurant where entrees cost on average of $60+. We skipped our favorite part of the meal, dessert because the entire meal was so bad we didn't have any confidence in the dessert menu. The duck presentation was just that, a presentation. If you have the bank roll to spend $75-100 person on Chinese food, then this place is a nice spot for Chinese food. For everyone else, this is a special occasion type restaurant. Decor is probably the nicest Chinese restaurant I've been to. Dim lighting accented by textures and traditional Asian wood panelings, but mixed with a modern layouts throughout. Tables are far apart enough from each other for private conversations in a very upscale atmosphere. Most protein dishes were close to $100, with bare minimal vegetable dishes running around $40. The duck is the star of the show and can be served in a variety of ways after they carve the skin and meat table side for their show. I dont have the bankroll to eat here on a regular meal, so to me, this is very overpriced and only deserving of 3 stars. It's like paying $20 for a street taco. A good taco? Yes, but.. not great, and def no taco is worth $20. HOWEVER, if you can afford that, then this place can be 5 stars for you. The private upscale atmosphere is really hard to come by for a Chinese restaurant. In fact, the next most expensive Chinese restaurant in Irvine, has a similar decor, but you have really bright led lighting, mixed with a really noisy atmosphere because the table next to you is within arms reach. Chang'an is a great Chinese restaurant for Peking duck and seafood dishes. The restaurant is over decorated almost in a good sense and you can tell it was built with intention and passion, non other than being the best restaurant in town. The details and decors from start to finish is just immaculate and just amusing to be in the mist of such a beautifully decorated restaurant. The peking duck has been ordered before hand usually 24-48 hours. The start to finish from the presentation of the peking duck and dining, it was just experience itself. I have had peking duck from the most famous places in Shanghai and Hongkong. I would say the taste and presentation was just amusing to see. It was not the best peking duck I have ever had but it was the one of the best tasting peking duck. Its hard to describe this in word but that is the best description I can give. The peking duck was moist juicy and carved in a professional manner. The carver was also about to give me the whole duck leg in a single piece, since I love to eat the leg just as uncarved. Something about using the knife to carve yourself before eating gives nice touch to the dining experience. The skin was just perfect and the portion was just enough to be shared by four. We finished all of the duck and ordered additional lobster and uni dish. This was just absolutely perfect and balance was great not too over powering with seasonings. The service was just as good as it gets as every waiter and waitress had their eyes on our table for smallest details. I would say this was one of the most pleasurable Chinese dining experiences I have had in the states. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for Peking Duck dinner, also they allow corkage to bring your own bottle of wine, so it would be great to pair wine with such a delicate peking duck. read more

This was a higher-end dining for Chinese cuisine that I don't normally experience much. Chinese fine dining has definitely achieved and taken on the new wave in asian cuisine. Usually we're all used to luxury dining from Japanese or some type of French-mixed fusion. I definitely understood why their location is San Gabriel didn't stand a chance compared to this location. Typically, when you're in a predominant asian area, people aren't willing to spend that type of money on Chinese food when there's a Sam Woo down the street or a Newport Seafood because typically people eat Chinese food for their lower price point. Being in LA, a lot of new flavors has been popping up and everyone has been tryna dip their toes into integrating more Asian flavors into traditional American comfort foods. This is not the case here. Now.. back to the food. I recommend taking your in-laws or family to this place and trust, they won't be disappointed. Originally when I came I was expecting more of a Hong Kong or Shanghai type of meals, but that's my fault for not looking into the restaurant before heading there. If you're a fan of Sichuan flavors, you'll definitely enjoy this place. They don't hold back on that, "mala", which is numbing spice. By the end of the meal, I could barely feel my tongue. The food was all great! They were able to balance the oil ratio properly, so I didn't have that greasy feeling after the meal. My favorite part was the roasted duck and what I believe was sea bass in stone pot. Now that's something. The duck is mandatory, but you have to call in prior to reserve one. They serve it to you as they carve it and another version of them smoking it. It was a nice dinner and show when they lit that duck on fire. They serve you the crunchy duck skin with brown sugar to get you salivating. It's a tease for sure. Then the sliced duck meat. We got their signature duck, chicken soup, tofu with mushroom and abalone, and another soup (don't remember the name but it was highly recommend), and the durian cake. All was good but my least favorite would be the cake. Would definitely come back to try other dishes as I love the decor/ambiance but this is defiantly not your typical causal dining. A relative invited us for a family get together at this exquisite, fine dining, northern-style Peking duck Chinese restaurant noted for their flambe Peking duck ($118). Reservations are required. Beautiful decor, attentive service where they change your plates mid-meal, presentation of the duck and dishes. Unique dishes were the flaming duck in full view near the table (see video), served for an extra cost either duck bone broth or fried duck bones (we opted for the latter, but I'd recommend the broth), regular duck and almond-flavored duck, duck skin, flour wraps, fixings of sliced green onions, jicama and plum sauce to make a duck wrap. Other unique dishes were the bok choy with tiny morel mushrooms, black tofu, tender beef tongue, and a gorgeous purple-ish pear dessert made of white chocolate, caramel mousse and chopped pears inside. He is very patient and kind, provided recommendations and be really nice when we asked for any changes. This is probably one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. It has a great ambience and great service. I've been here about two times and each time I order the peking duck. The peking duck is a must have if you're coming to the restaurant for the first time. You need to pre-order the Peking duck in advance prior to your reservation. It is both a meal and a show. They will bring out the duck and light it on fire to crisp the skin as well create a fun shows. After the fire goes out, the employee will then cut and plate the duck in front of the table. So you are eating it as fresh as possible. The duck is in served in three different ways. The skin is served with a side of sugar, the duck meat is served with a bunch of condiments and then crepes to kind of make little duck rolls and the bones are used for a duck soup. To be honest, duck is fairly filling. I think it should feed about four to six people full and my experiences Along with a duck we also order the short ribs. Similar to the duck, the staff will cut and plate the short ribs in front of the the table. The ribs were very fatty but also so tender and flavorful. I think I even like the rib a little bit more than a duck. We also order a few other dishes such as the pork belly sliders, the lychee prawns and seasonal vegetable. I think one of the worst parts is the fact that they bring out the food in a random order so we received the vegetables almost last after finish most of the meaty dishes. Although the portions aren't that large, they are so filling and since they're on the fattier side, you tend to not want to eat too much of it. We made the mistake of over ordering because we had a larger party and thought that the food would not be filling enough. But to be honest after the duck and the prawns we didn't even need the rest of the dishes. The lychee prawns were very interesting to try but to be honest, not my favorite. It has a sweet and sour sauce on it and the lyches is so soft it became kind of mushy.The pork belly sliders are actually fairly small, but since they are more carb base it's filling. The stir fried vegetable dish was the most underwhelming dish. It's a very basic and safe dish of just vegetables and garlic. Although good, not really worth $20. I would say the restaurant is on the pricier side. It's not ridiculously expensive where it's not worth it, but not an everyday meal kind of place. The duck and the short ribs are probably the best food items and if you have a large party, a pot of tea is worth it. We went here for lunch. Personally, I would never go back. First, the pros. The place is clean and the service was very good. It's not quite to the level of the highest-end restaurants, but nonethess, the staff did a very good job of being attentive without being overbearing. The decor is dark-wood museum meets China, which may be of taste to some, and just shy of pretentious. Now the cons. The most serious problem is that the food is merely average. We had about 12 dishes, ranging from the Peking duck to the the stuffed okra. Nothing was delicious, and a few things were simply bad. You will need to make a reservation first and they will ask if you wanted to reserve a duck as well. You will get tableside service and get a little performance with the flaming duck. After having come here with my friends a few times, I wanted my family to share in the experience, especially the duck. Last night, we decided to treat my sibs to dinner at Chang An. Duck was splendid as usual - it was such a treat! DH and I had a pretty horrible lunch at Le Pasta & Pizza at EatalyLA so was very much looking forward to this meal (not so much the price, obviously!). We also ordered: 1) Ghost pepper fried rice - thumbs up. Very flavorful and while spicy, not crazy spicy where your mouth is burning 2) Lychee prawns - thumbs up. This is like walnut shrimp at the banquet halls but with fried lychees added. Prawns were tender and perfectly cooked - it's hard to get it right like this because shrimps/prawns tend to be overcooked at most places 3) Fried chicken with a ton of wok-fried spicy chilis - thumbs down. This is the same dish as in a lot Szechuan places where the chilis numb your tongue. The fried chicken bits felt flash-fried so it's super light tasting, but it wasn't that special so not sure that I'd order this again 4) Cilantro salad - thumbs way up. Who would expect that a cilantro salad would taste so good - it's super refreshing with the dressing. It is almost impossible to describe but at $22, it's almost a bargain...lol 5) Pea shoots in garlic sauce - thumbs up. While is this also fairly standard, it tasted so fresh and not greasy as other restaurants. This is one of the only green things in our meal! 6) Steamed turbot with scallions and in soy sauce - thumbs DOWN. This was horrible...imagine a fish that tasted like rubber. At $118, we felt compelled to eat it but the texture of the fish was so rubbery. In our last visit, we had a steamed fish that was amazing, and luckily, I grabbed a photo. I thought that I had ordered this same fish but it turned out to be a different fish altogether, the marble fish when I asked the server. The wait staff was extremely nice and attentive. I wished that our waiter had told me that there were different types of steamed fish. But it was a way better experience than the last waiter (Bob) who totally upsold us on stuff that we didn't really care for (e.g., Foie Gras torchon in these tiny like pieces on squid ink wrap that looked like a tortilla - for $98, it was such a rip-off that we didn't even finish). Last night's staff was very attentive, and I walked away feeling like we got great service. I think that when you dine at a place like this, you feel like you shouldn't ask the price because it's not only part of the experience and also, this feeling of if you have to ask, you can't afford it. NOT TRUE!!! I have eaten in many 3-star Michelin restaurants in NY and Paris, and prices are very clearly labeled (e.g., supplements). As a result, one should not feel uncomfortable asking how much a Market Price item is. Cuz the unscrupulous waiters can take advantage of us like what happened with the $98 foie dish at lunch. The ambiance in this place is incredible - reminds me of a Le Bernardin...it's beautiful, refined, and had none of the loud noise from the other diners. One nit I have is that they don't change your plates. I really hate having all the different tastes and dishes tainting each other. If the restaurant's management is reviewing these posts, they need to take note of this. Even in the large banquet halls, they change your plates after every dish or every other dish. Finally, a Chinese restaurant that's at par with the finer establishments in China. For authentic Chinese fine dining(palace style food), no other place in SoCal could match Chang'an. The Peking Duck is exquisite - need to order ahead of time. Exotic appetizers like the cordyseps is a brave dish to serve in the Orange County and one can only hope there are enough audience for such interesting texture and taste. The modern interior decor is elegant and subdued. Service is top notch. There are too many good things to say about the food so just go try it. You can tell the owners went all in here especially when this building used to be a very nice steakhouse. Chang An has turned this hidden spot in Old Town Tustin into ... honestly.. my new favorite Chinese food restaurant in Orange County. Order their flaming peking duck ! Its worth the tag. They light it up in flames before you then serve it cooked in multiple ways/stylez. You get delicious wraps , duck skin crisped to perfection, and then they even smoke a good amount of the duck for a totally different kick. Their short ribs were also cooked to perfection- moist centers with mouthwatering crispy edges. Wow just wow. We got their hot and sour soups, which were good - traditionally flavored. Their wagyu rice is amazingly rich with flavors. The crispy shrimp is an airy crisp with a wasabi like mustard drizzle so if some guests in your dinner party can't handle wasabi, ask for sauce on the side. They even make dumplings with lamb to change things up, and I enjoyed their twist on this. Their vegetable dumplings were good but their craftsmanship on the actual dumplings (turning them into little chickens & purple lotus dumplings) was impressive. Vegetable dumplings are never as mind blowing with flavors as the protein meat filled dumplings so for them to add an extra creative touch to the vegetable dumplings shows that they really catered their menu to have a little something for everyone. Great versatility! Lastly, their desserts are worth saving some room for too. They brought out a complimentary durian cake for my bday which tasted just like the fruit (again an acquired taste for durian is necessary) , and we ordered the blue pear, which is a white chocolate delicacy filled with yummy goodness! Hidden in the back side of the building, this is a high class Northern Chinese restaurant. The decor reflects the name, Chang An, the ancient capital of China. The Beijing duck is the showcase dish, which is lit on fire before it is served. Siced skin is served first with brown sugar dip. Then, the skin and meat came with the usual scallion, sauce and tortillas. Mapo tofu with fish maw has a really good flavor. Beef tongue is tender with a great mild flavor. Lee chee shrimp comes with large lee chee fruit. Service is very good and the staff members wear digital name tags. Expect to pay over $100 per person, so bring someone worthy. read more

This review is base on my visit on 04/11/2021, the day after grand opening. This new restaurant is literally hidden in the plaza where Bronx sandwich and Tustin Brewery is located; you have to drive to the back, behind/next to Bronx to find it. There is no big sign either so you really kind of have to look for it. The interior is exceptional as most of the material were hand picked from old houses in China, can't imagine the amount of effort needs to get this done. Our waitress is Mia and she was very knowledgeable to the making and taste of the food offer by the restaurant; it's always good to have someone guide you when visiting a new, high-end place. Interior is beautiful, food is not great. Servers here don't know what they're doing. Overall, not a good experience. Leaving disappointed. More details to the bad service : I asked a server to refill my ice water, the sever came back with steaming hot water. Asked another server to replace the water, the sever came back with luke warm water. I had to ask the THIRD time to get iced water refilled. The whole thing takes over 10 minutes, I was waiting thirsty. In an upscale restaurant like this, I would expect an easier time getting basic request fullfilled like getting iced water. Ordered an appetizer, it never came. In the end, server told us it's sold out. Could have let us know a lot sooner. Added a meat dish just to find out in the end it was never added either. This is a great addition to Tustin because once you walk in you are transcended to another place. Unbeknownst to us we made a reservation and when we were seated asked when they had opened and they said this is our first day! The service staff were very attentive. The food must be inspired by the beautiful ambiance of history displayed everywhere you look. The menu was not large, they offered a separate menu for appetizers, main dishes and desserts. Many special order items that must be ordered in advance. We started off with the hot and sour soup. Something we have eaten many times and also in China. And it was very authentic. The cilantro salad was simple but the star of the appetizers. The spareribs were different but tasty. Our main courses were the shrimp with cashew and the green peppercorn chicken. We also ordered the pork belly sliders. The shrimp dish was fresh and delicious. The chicken was very different. Too aromatic for our tastes.The sliders had a epic green chili sauce, but the bread was disappointing and very little meat inside. The steamed rice also had something in it we couldn't place, maybe lavender. The peach green tea was perfect. In the past, besides the Peking duck (its claim to fame), all other dishes were pretty awful. Our recent trip had this all changed. Besides the duck, which was excellent as always, we also ordered stir fry beef with wild pepper and pork rib. Both were very good. The stir fried beef was so good that we asked for a 2nd serving. Went here for my birthday, and they did not disappoint! We ordered ahead the Peking Duck and it was so worth it! The chef lit the duck on fire and then cut pieces for us to eat. The skin was amazing and melted in your mouth like butter. We also ordered this black tofu, which was delicious! They gave me a complimentary noodle soup for my birthday and the noodles were so chewy and the soup tasted amazing! The service was very good, all of the servers kindly answered any questions we had. Like many of you are probably doing right at this moment, I scoured all the reviews, torn between the strong positive and negative ones. Well, I actually ended up going, so let me give you my two cents. I think the key to actually leaving satisfied is to order the Peking duck specifically, a small side (like a soup), and a pot of tea. This was all more than enough for 2 people (and we had leftovers, which always makes me feel like I got my money's worth)! A pot of tea is $28, but you get unlimited refills, so be sure to take advantage of that! The servers were super attentive and did a great job of replenishing the pot every time we finished - I think we had 5 pots worth of tea by the time we were done with the meal. We started with the matsutake and duck wonton soup ($8). It comes with a bunch of other ingredients in it, including seaweed, egg, sesame seeds and micro shrimp. Make sure you check everything if you have allergies! The Peking duck ($98) is INSANE. The first pieces of skin from the chest are like glass - so thin and crackly. It's phenomenal with the brown sugar, like a savory candy. The crepes are the thinnest I've ever had, yet they are somehow incredibly strong. None of mine ripped while preparing the rolls, and I feel like you always have inevitable rips! Absolutely adored the pear as one of the condiments - the freshness complimented the duck so well, and now I feel like I can't eat it any other way. An extra order of crepes is $8 and pear is $5 FYI (docking half a star for that - I feel like extra condiments should be included for the hefty price you're already paying). I'm docking another half a star because service became pretty slow toward the end of the meal. No one checked on us while we were eating the duck, and I think we waited at least 20 minutes for dessert, which was just a scoop of peppercorn ice cream ($8). Overall, I don't know if I'd trust the other dishes offered here, since it seems like the portions vary wildly and aren't always reflected in the price. However, I 100% vouch for the duck, and I think it's a lovely splurge for a special occasion. read more

This place is a joke. Mediocre food was super expensive price. And the server doesn't know how to serve. Doesn't even deserve a star

They are literally doing one-time business. First, food tastes really average for a $200+ per person restaurant, one of our green vegetables dish first came with a very thick and long hair in it, we noticed it immediately when they put on the table. And the second time they brought it, the vegetables are super hard to bite off and chew. Second, service is quite disappointing. For those seafood we ordered, they never tell us the price per pound, and never confirm the quantity and quality with us. Based on fish bone length and head size, it should be approximately 1.1-1.3 lbs, but they charged us 3 lbs. (My friend joked they were charging us by weighting the whole dish, including the soup and the bowl....) Also, they never provide us a detail receipt on what we ordered and the price for each dish. Until we suspected, they excused that we have to wait for the manager returns to get the receipt. Eventually, they provided it to us, but they have cleaned up the table and we lost the fish that we want to argue about. Last, they force their customers to pay minimum 25% tips on after tax price. Yes, you are paying tips for tax. Remember, this is an average $200+/person restaurant. read more
