Came in for a late lunch on Saturday. I like that their happy hour runs every day. I received $2 off of my guacamole which was nice. The guacamole was pretty good. I would have preferred the onions to be chopped a bit more. I had cheese enchiladas with suza sauce. It was particularly yummy. Staff was pretty attentive especially given that they had a party of about 20 that kept growing. All in all I enjoyed my lunch. I've given four stars rathe than five for the little misses. read more

Went to this place on May 5, to celebrate Cinco De Mayo, (along with everyone else in the area) the place was packed with a 1.5 hour wait. My party and I went to the bar to grab some drinks while we waited for a table. While the bar was very busy, other people seemed to get waited on around us. When my friend asked to speak to the manager, a very curt man said "I am the manager, what is the problem". My friend proceeded to explain that she is a diabetic and had been standing there trying to get a glass of water for 20 mins while they waited on everyone else around her. He stated they were busy, and my friend stated that she understood that, but was still upset that she had been standing there for 20 mins to put in a request for water. By that time, 2 bar seats had opened up and 2 our party of 5 sat down. The "manager" proceeded to ask what we wanted to order. He was given the order along with the request for the glass of water. He then returned with a HALF full glass of water (who knows if it was new or left by someone) and threw it at her and told the rest of us that we could not order any drinks. Shocked, we sat there, as we had never been treated this way. Another bar tender then stopped by to ask if we had been helped, when we proceded to say yes but didn't recieve or order, then repeated our order, the "manager" came over and told that bar tender not to serve us. We had just arrived at the resturant and it wasn't like we had already consumed "too much", it was that the "manager" didn't like that we voiced a complaint about the service. Three stars for me means that the food was decent, try it for yourself, but I won't be returning. The atmosphere is very casual and lower end. The prices are fairly in line with the atmosphere, but a few $s high for quality. The large queso is $12 and is a little stickier and thicker than stadium nacho cheese with a close flavor profile. The salsa is tasty a medium hotness. The chips are thick and taste like slightly rancid frying oil. The kid's meal is a decent value with a drink, entree, and dessert for $6. I had a queso topped, fried beef burrito that had virtually no filling. It was huge, but it was all tortilla. Enchiladas were ok and hubby said would eat them again (he doesn't know we aren't going back. Haha!). Service was great. Ralo (spelling?!) was a great. Excellent attitude. On it. Wasn't phased by the cranky lady complaining about $12 queso! Gotta love a server who lets the customer be themselves without getting outwardly irritated. My son shared an entree with me and he still brought him tge kids' dessert, since the other kids were getting one with their meal. Drove up to Austin for an auction at the UHaul storage and they recommended Serrano's, got here alittle after 11 and there were several tables with patrons. The young girl manning the hostess stand has MUCH to learn. No smile, no real greeting just asked if sitting in bar area was OK, which it was. I've been passing this restaurant for six months because it looks like an off brand Chuys and I'm not about no greasy chips, but I finally decided to stop in... and I was surpringly blown away. The interior looks like the eighties vomited on the nineties, the hostess looked like Wednesday Addams, and there were kids everywhere.. I had doubts. But then Kyle the waiter showed up and everything was ok. He was prompt, intuitive to the point that I suspected him of reading my mind, and thoughtful. Kyle was amazing. I switched seats with my partner and HE NOTICED. That's some wizardry. The food was good. The chips were perfect, salsa was hot, shrimp enchiladas were bathed in sauce, and margaritas were tasty and snuck up on me. Came in Father's Day around 6 and there was no wait. Our waiter was very nice but very forgetful, we would ask for two things and he would only bring one thing back. Refilled my Coke with water. Food was ok but very expensive. Our check was over $70 for 2 adults and 3 small kids, and we only ordered one soda, the rest was water. This restaurant is dirty and the service is terrible. I ordered unsweetened tea, and the drink came out with the teaspoon already in the cup. When I took it out, there was old caked on salsa on the spoon. I showed my waitress, who apologized and took it away. The second drink came out, and the teaspoon was in the cup again. I took it out, and the same salsa gunk was on the spoon...but with scrape marks where the waitress had attempted to clean the spoon (rather than get a clean one). I asked her about this, and she told me the dishwasher sterilizes the spoons and so it was fine. We were sitting at a booth next to the chip and drink station, and one of the waitresses opened the chip area and starting eating out of the container. Pieces were falling from her mouth back into the container. So completely gross. To make matters worse, the wait staff has old food caked onto their clothing. As a former waiter, I understand this happens. However, there is a difference between getting your attire dirty and having a manager that doesn't require staff to be clean. You can *tell* the difference between the two. This place needs regular visits from the health department. Seeing as how there wasn't a wait on a Friday night at dinner should have also been a clue. read more

I've been here probably 4-5 times over the years. Can't recall ever having an issue. Always clean, always good service, always good food. One of my two default tex-mex places. Lots of interesting choices and the staff is top-notch. The parilla mix fajitas are a great choice - substitue extra jalapeno sausage for the carnitas. Great tortillas and fresh salsa. The salsa does vary, some days it's pretty spicy, others almost like water. Friday nights gets really packed, but Saturday before 7 is an great time to get in without a wait. Avoid the center section, it gets pretty jammed up and you'll be playing elbow wars with the table next to you. Nice bar area to watch the game but you can still eat on the other side of the restaurant without too much interruption. Very kid friendly. read more

Horrible service. The staff was too busy socializing with each other to wait on us. After my husband got up and asked for help, our waiter finally came, he was friendly enough, but did the minimum of service. The food was cold, the beef was obviously reconstituted from earlier cooking. It was very dark and dry. The chips were reconstituted from earlier making them dark and with a slight burnt flavor. We asked for fresh chips and another waitperson brought it. They topped off the old basket of dark chips with 4 or 5 lighter chips. Pitiful. There are many places to eat in Austin and this location doesn't care about anything except just getting by. We've been here several times now and I guess this is our current go-to place for Tex-Mex. They have a very good salsa, we always eat several bowls of it before the meal. I really enjoy their fajitas, the beef is very tender and it has a great Mesquite smoke flavor. Their tortillas have a great homemade flavor and I always eat too many. All the food we have tried has been very good. The enchiladas and chimichangas were especially delicious on our last visit. They have a great happy hour and nice specials on both drinks and food. First time here and the service was spot on! Our party of 5 was seated rather quickly (in less then 10 mins) even though they appeared to be busy. Friendly, relaxing atmosphere and we LOVED the larger then normal booths for our party (could have probably sat 6-8). I was not a fan of the queso or my fried avocado tacos but the rest of the party enjoyed their enchiladas. The salsa brought to the table was also very good. As enchiladas are my second fav thing, we will definitely be back to try other items on the menu. Although they had one of my go to beers (blue moon in a bottle) I would have preferred a better beer selection. Been to this Serranos many times over the past four or five years and never had a bad experience. The waitstaff is always courteous and attentive, the chicken in the enchiladas is the best I've had, and I love the way you can customize enchilada plates. The frozen margaritas here are good too, especially the strawberry one. Don't know if they still offer this, but there used to be deals on certain days where you could get like, BOGO enchilada plates. As far as kid meals go, their menu is pretty standard for a Tex-Mex place. My son had the chicken strips with fries. It looked delicious, but my picky child refused to eat it, demanding to plow through the tortilla chips instead. Serranos is usually good, I came here 3 weeks ago and everything was great. However, this time I was massively disappointed. We ordered pickup to go - a large queso, a chimichanga, and chicken flautas. As far as flavor, the chimichanga and flautas were fine. However, there was a bad, half cooked, stringy piece of chicken in one of the flautas which accounted for over half the chicken in it so we basically received 1.5 flautas. On top of that, the queso was terrible. I have never received queso like that from here before. Instead of everything being mixed together there were massive chunks of tomato, jalapeño, and Serrano peppers which had clearly been added after the fact as the queso had no flavor whatsoever, not to mention the container was only half full. Overall, I'm not sure I will be returning to Serranos, paying $50+ for bad food and small portions is not something I want to do again. read more

My wife and I have been eating here for 15 years and the experience we had here yesterday makes us not want to go back. We ate at the bar and the bartenders gave us some of the worst service we've ever had. They never checked on us to ask if we needed to order or get chips refill.. they relied on us to try to get their attention. And getting their attention was difficult because they seemed to deliberately keep their heads down and avoid eye contact. The restaurant was slow and there were never more than 4 other people at the bar, so they weren't busy at all, which wouldn't have been an excuse anyways. We would have an empty glass, empty chips basket, and empty salsa bowl and they never once asked if we needed another drink or refills on chips. So, multiple times we had to try to flag them down and ask for service which of course was difficult because they were trying to avoid their customers. Of course one of them finally asked us if we needed another drink... AFTER we had asked for the check. The only reason I'm leaving the 2 stars instead of one is the food is still good. But the lack of caring and even meeting the minimum standards for food service detracts so much from the experience that a day later my wife and I are still talking about it. And we aren't complainers. This is the first bad review I've ever written.. but these bartenders certainly earned this. read more
