I had stretchy pants. Here's the thing: it's just not my type. It markets itself as upscale Tex-Mex, but the energy lands somewhere between diner bar and "your friend's uncle's patio party." Speaking of patio -- it's a popular smoking destination, and that smoky perfume tends to drift inside and join you for dinner. Nothing says "refined queso experience" like a subtle hint of Marlboro. Now, the service? Truly excellent. Our server was attentive, warm, and on top of everything. Five-star human. And the happy hour prices? Genuinely fantastic. Dangerous, even. If we're rating value and kindness, they win. But the food... oh, the food. It's not bad. It's just... emotionally neutral. I like my Tex-Mex either fresh and bright or deeply authentic -- something that makes me pause mid-bite and whisper, "yes." This felt more like food that clocked in, did its shift, and clocked out. Competent. Polite. Unmemorable. And that's kind of the whole vibe. The restaurant feels like it's still deciding who it wants to be when it grows up. Upscale? Casual bar? Neighborhood hangout? I pretty much stand by my original review, but I had to come back to say a word about our server Katie...my gosh, she not only elevates Guaco in our minds, but she has restored our faith in phenomenal service!!! From the moment she greeted us, she was fantastic...but what really set her apart was how she got SO incredibly busy...serving SO many tables...and STILL was fantastic!!! She held up under pressure better than I've ever seen. She really should be an air traffic controller, but she's too personable to be so isolated! And we still love the delicious food (particularly the gumbo and the homemade tortilla chips)...and still don't care for the cocktails...but there is a lot of beer and wine available! I dined at lunch and was really impressed! My "Teacher's Treat" option included a soft chicken taco on a corn tortilla, a mixed salad, house-made chips, queso, and large drink. The chicken was very tender and all the vegetables in the salad were fresh. The queso wasn't stereotypical orange-Velveta queso. It was clearly made fresh with authentic cheeses. It tasted terrific! My friend's meal came with a cup of gumbo, of which I was dubious (Mexican gumbo?). But it had big chunks of chicken and celery and a nice flavor. It also, however, had a surprising kick of heat due to a few hidden peppers! The patio is very open, has fans for cooling, and TVs for watching sports. The patio is also dog-friendly. read more

I've sat inside, by the bar and there (clear covered) outside with heat lamps and hot pits. You see the Longhorns as soon as you park. There's Longhorns corn hole, which can be fun for having a drink and waiting for your food. I ordered a 24oz house margarita, had far too much mix than tequila. I ordered a shot for my drink to actually taste as it should. My friend however ordered a raspberry margarita and it was good. Next time I'll stick with beer. We ordered the spicy queso with chips. I went to guaco taco after reading the menu online and they have way more options in store than they do online. The taco salad was delicious and a more paleo friendly option for myself especially with the jalepeno ranch dressing. The servers are all really sweet and check on you frequently. It is more of a bar kind of setting and can be a little loud inside but outside seating is nice and quiet and they have fans with misters for the texas heat! Definetly will come back! read more

Located in Leander in a safe part of town with plenty of parking lies a little hidden gem with little fanfare called Guaco Taco. Outside is more or less a run of the mill restaurants façade with a small but quaint sign and a large porch area. Walk on in and the place has a more character. The tables are humble but the bar is distinct in that it has interesting walls, a nice marble top with multiple windows that open up to the outside right behind the bar. That along with a lot of TVs and a proud selection of the finish spirits on the bookshelf like wall make for a fun presentation. The number of cocktails isn't earth shattering and the presentation is simplistic in nature. That said the drinks are decent, which is to say they're serviceable but they're not trying to encourage the pinky up crowd. Their bourbon and diet was perfectly balanced and the only reason I mention that is how many times I've had somewhere that doesn't know how to make it. The "Lime in Da Coconut" was an extremely tasty concoction. Coconut is stuck to the rim while the drink balances fresh lime juice to cut the rich coconut. A very nice spring and summer refreshment for adults. Also, the bartender and waitstaff are extremely nice and quick to fulfill orders with a smile on their face. As for the food it's pretty good however I only sampled the nachos. The whole dish was again, simple yet familiar without any over the top flair. The beef was well seasoned, the guac was fresh as was the pico de gallo. As a personal preference I'd rather have melted cheese than queso, but that's me. Also, I added some shredded lettuce and it was a great addition. The portion size was small so be prepared if you eat a lot, it might take an app and entrée to "fill 'er up." Guaco Taco is a very good, hometown like bar with great food with a relaxing, kicked back atmosphere. The staff are pleasant with a fresh and tasty food selection accompanied by no fuss beverages. Plenty of parking in the Randalls strip mall, off of Crystal Falls. Arrived right around 4 PM greeted and advised there was one table available. All others were reserved for their Wednesday bingo. I asked if the bar was open seating and he advised yes it was. The greeter then came back advised we could actually sit anywhere until 5:45 PM. Since tables were reserved for 6:30? Drinks were excellent food came immediately. French fries were a recommendation and they were on point with the three sauces served with them. We then ordered the chips and queso, again another excellent choice. We ordered the guacamole and chips. Definitely not enough guacamole for the amount of chips you get. It was ok. Chips warm, crunchy, but yet fluffy and dense. Bloody Mary's spicy with the added shrimp. Yummy a meal in themselves. First one arrived with the avocado, bacon, olives, celery, shrimp salt on the rim excellent cocktail, however when she set it on the table, it just spills everywhere. No problem. I cleaned it up. Second Bloody Mary came with the shrimp on the side like an appetizer, not an attractive look, again, spilled all over the table , There was a little bit of a hiccup when one of the customers that sat at the table next to us, the table got caught in her wheelchair. Items on the table went flying everywhere. The one waiter that happened to be walking by tried to assist. I immediately jumped up and assisted him because no other team member or no one else in the restaurant actually helped this poor woman in a wheelchair with her service dog. I asked 3 different team members to clean up the ice in my area so i could put my chair back and sit down. It just melted. As we were leaving the gal that was handing out the bingo cards slipped and fell. I want to say it was because of the ice (the wet rug in that area) The place is great. Food was real good. Team members are all very young, eager to help. I just think a manager there should've been available with so many customers inside and out. The place was packed with the Halloween Bingo. read more

My husband and I went late afternoon mid week here. I heard about this place from my local community page on Facebook. I don't know what they were thinking...as NOT what they described. First off, I was shocked to see..mind you like 3-4PM on a weekday..the outside bar had about 10 tables, just drinking, not eating. Then, when we went inside..and the whole bar area was filled end to end with people...mostly my age (retired maybe?)...from one end to the other...and joking around with bartender. When you walk into this place, it does have mixture of high and low tables. It is dark and dingy, and looks like a "dive bar" feel, with a "Jukebox-newer version" in the middle of the wall playing music. We were the only ones seated at any of the tables (as said, most were at the bar). I thought since the name is "Guaco Taco", I would start with their Guacamole and chips, and my husband wanted salsa too (had to ask for that extra..it was either one or other). The chips were horrible..was really thick, hard to bite into..was more like a thick pita chip. The guacamole was not good either. It did not taste like avacados at all. Or, if so was mixed with like sour cream or something, as it was very smooth, no flavor, and sprinkled with a little chopped tomatoes on top. My husband said the salsa was not much better, as just tasted like blended tomatoes, not much spice. So, we decided to order, again, heard they were known for their tacos, specifically, one in group said the "fish taco" was good. I looked and unless you got the "combos" of muliple items, that taco just came with a "mexican coleslaw". So, I got a fish taco (hard) with a side of cliantro rice. My husband got the multi meat taco (soft), no extra sides. By looks alone, both not appealing! The tacos were the size you get at Taco Bell. Again, my shell was thick and hard. The first was very flat and tasted like a frozen fish just deep fried. My husband said his all meat was not that bad, just not much to it. The "Mexican coleslaw" came in this small little plastic cup, and consisted of some type of cabbage and black beans (guess that made it "Mexican"), and was very watery, not good (*see under pics, someone else took picture of this thing). Then, the ciltantro rice, in a very small ramakin thing on the side, was not flavorful at all! I have boxed rice from grocery store (Zaterain's is actually very good) that is better then this. During the course of hour we were there, one other couple came in and sat at a high table. More went to bar, and they continued on laughing and carrying on with the staff. I think this place should redesign itself, and maybe just make it a bar, as it looks like that is what is attracts the most. Then, just take away the food. Either hire a new cook for simple bar food, or maybe get a food truck like Night Owl does (downtown Leander). Sorry, but not coming back. read more

We stopped by a Guaco Taco on a recent Sunday afternoon​. The place wasn't that crowded, so we were seated immediately. We started with the chips and salsa sampler, the green and red sauce is where our favorite​s​. ​ ​The ranch dip was just that, ranch dip. LOL ​There was a sweeter, habanero salsa, that wasn't very appealing on chips, but was a killer combo with the fish tacos. We both ordered a couple of tacos for lunch, we both had the grilled shrimp, one had the certified Angus beef taco, and a fish taco rounded out the four. All of the tacos were delicious, prepared fresh, super fresh ingredients, everything on point. That said, I would give a special hat tipped to the certified Angus beef taco, that was fantastic, with a bit of both the red and green salsas on top. A jumbo margarita hit the spot in the libations category, huge, delicious, and not too sweet. Jules was our waitress, she did a super job, attentive but not intrusive. This place used to be really good, however, everything has changed. There are literally children crawling on the floor, parents not paying attention, and the food was absolutely gross. This is the first time I've seen a place used canned chicken and grill it to make up for the fact that it's canned chicken. They have a nice lunch menu. I got the #4 Lunch Special. The #4 is a taco (chicken, beef, shrimp, or fish), a cup of Mexican Gumbo, homemade tortilla chip, white queso, and salsa. The Mexican Gumbo was extremely good. Had chunks of chicken and avocado with rice, carrots in a rich spicy broth. The soup has a whole Thai chili pepper in it. He started with "The Hangover" which had eggs, sausage ( or bacon)shredded cheese and chopped jalapeños ( no heat for hubby so they were left off) . I had a delicious Watermelon Margarita, and a Guaco Taco Combo Plate. I had 1 shredded pork, 1 ground beef and 1 chicken taco. They were all tasty. I used the red salsa and ?ranch on my tacos. I like some heat and they perked them up. Hubby mentioned the chicken was dry and I agreed with him. It was the only negative comment we had. Scam Alert! Visited this restaurant with two kids - one of which spilled water onto her lap at the end of the meal. Needing to leave quickly, I handed my credit card to the waitress...not seeing thei itemized bill. Big Mistake! She returns with a total well beyond our table order. So I ask for an itemized bill...and she freeze's up. Said for me to wait as she worked other wait staff to cover her trail. Reluctantly, she returned stating "Sorry, I added a table's tab who already left to your ticket." BS. I've worked in restaurants, was the executive chef at Ruth's Chris (Austin) and have seen all the tricks staff try to pull., In speakding with the manager, she agreed to refund me the difference between the original ticket and the expected ticket. This is where it gets odd. The waitress never processed the lowered amount -- she acted like she gave us the actual amount but that amount never processed. This place is so sketchy. Never give your card in advance of seeing the ticket. And the manager who agreed to follow back up with me hasn't done so in over 2 weeks. Avoid her too. First of all, I am so glad to have found a place nearby that is gluten free!!! This restaurant is on Crystal falls and it has some outdoor space that is perfect for the weather. Maybe I'm just too old, but the music inside was just too loud for me. Our server, Irene was really kind and helped us my 1000 questions. We decided to get started with a strawberry frozen rita and a beer. I order a regular size Rita and immediately regretted that. It was really good, although im not a fan of the sugar rim. If you are new, they give you some chips with their sauces. My favorite was the jalapeño ranch. We ordered a meat monster taco, the shrimp basket and the nachos. The nachos were the star of the night. The tortilla chips are super crunchy and light. Holy cow this place is fantastic I have a gluten allergy and am always skeptical about Mexican/taco places because of the corn/flour blend tortillas, and because of how many delicious ingredients/sauces go into these types of dishes. I always like to compliment restaurants that have something unique going for them. Gauco, as we call it, has two things I really like. It has a nice relaxed vibe to it, a sort of neighborhood feel you might say. The second, is their cauliflower quesadilla! Yes, a cauliflower shell that you would not think would be as good as it is but oh man, whoever created this really had a great tasty idea. For those who want something healthy, who do Atkins diet, this thing is awesome! They even have cauli chips and Avocado dip! Those chips are fantastic. Sometimes for lunch, since I live close by, I'll treat myself to this awesome dish. I was talking up the cauliquesadilla to my son and one day came home with one, and offered him a bite. He was skeptical, and came back to me after the first bite and was sold! I always have them cook out a bit further for that crispy crunch effect! Just wanted to sing the praises of this special dish! Being really open minded, a taco can be anything you want and I won't claim authority over what an authentic taco is (even though I was born and raised in Mexico), but I'll say this: You will NOT find good taquerias in Mexico that sell crispy shell tortillas, lettuce, yellow cheese OR ground beef, for their tacos. As soon as I see any of the following at a taqueria in the US, I know I am in the wrong place for a Mexican taco. This place offers all 4 wrong elements mentioned above. Use this knowledge to evaluate the authenticity of your next Mexican restaurant. That being said, the food isn't bad, it's just not good nor remotely close to what you would find at taquerias in Mexico. I have nothing against Tex-Mex style tacos, they have their place in their own category, for example Taco Deli, Velvet taco or even Torchis, have some great tacos, even though they are not what you would find in Mexico. read more
