Wow, did not expect this. It smelled great outside, I smelled it every day that I was down the road at a business. I just had to stop in and try it, I had to get the chicken as that is in the name of the restaurant so it must be good. I got the half chicken meal with two sides and it was just like it smelled. Got plenty of corn tortillas with it along with dipping sauces. The red sauce is extremely mild, almost no heat at all, but taste good. The green sauce has a small amount of heat to it and is great. This is a small fast food restaurant you walk up and order. they call your name or number you go get it. Everyone in my party enjoyed their food. My wife got the tostadas, which she absolutely enjoyed. My daughter got the torta. I was able to sample each of their dishes and I must say everything was good. Decided to get take-out dinner at a different place than we normally patronize. Decided on El pollo Rico, because it's close and the menu was interesting. When I arrived around 7 pm, the store was not busy. I wondered how good the food was b/c I expected some business due to the time. Ordering was easy. I ordered at the counter, but they have a kiosk too, if you are people adverse . The food came out to me very quickly under 5 min. When I got home, we were surprised at the portion size. Very hearty portions. We could have order a single item and our hunger would have been satisfied. Had the Papa Asada and the Burrito. The food was fine. Not overly seasoned and had flavor. Not sure why it's taken so long to do this review... perhaps it's because we have El Pollo Rico so often! Usually 2-3x per month. We generally get the same thing... a whole chicken with the sides (beans, rice, onions, salsas). The food is simply good! Our "go to" for a last minute meal. Love this place! The chicken is delicious and a great healthy choice in fast food; can't go wrong with the whole or half chicken meal. We've tried the nachos, bowls and tacos, but our go to is the whole chicken as it fits nicely in any healthy diet. Using organic chicken would absolutely put El Pollo Rico over the top, but still like to enjoy eating here ever so often when cooking is just not what I want to do. read more

This was our first visit to this restaurant. Pepsi products are sold here, which is already great for me! I am from South Texas, so my idea of good Mexican food is different than native central Texans. This keeps me a little skeptical of every Mexican joint I go to. I'm glad to report El Pollo Rico didn't disappoint. My family of 4 all had different items and everything was tasty and authentic. Service was quick and friendly. The diner had plenty of seating and was nice and cool inside. The pricing is on par with restaurants around the area. This is a place I will recommend and return to. We haven't been to El Pollo Rico in years but we always love their food. Stopped by at this location since we were in the area and it was mind blowing! I have never seen an El Pollo Rico this big and the best of all...they have a drive-thru!! SERVICE (DRIVE-THRU ONLY): We jumped into the drive-thru line and it moved pretty fast. They have a huge menu board for the customers to clearly see everything, but we already knew what we were going to order. The lady who took our order was good and efficient; speaking loudly and asking questions to confirm our order! FOOD: We got their WHOLE CHICKEN MEAL (comes with grilled half onion, corn or flour tortillas, lime(s), green sauce, salsa, and two sides which we picked refried beans and plantains), and TAQUITOS with beef. Their whole chicken was as fresh and delicious as we remember. We love this SPICY GREEN SAUCE (I don't mind drinking that thing with a straw), and grilled onion!!! We also got an extra order of PLANTAINs which was SO GOOD! I don't care much for their TAQUITOS because the beef was too dry for my liking. VERDICT: All-in-all, this location is by far the best (we have been to one on Lamar Blvd and one right off of highway 79 and Mays St), so if we happen to crave charcoal grilled chicken again, we will definitely come to this location! read more

The food is always very good but those soda machines are never working. The owner needs to get them replaced at the front and back.

We love this chicken. We get it every few weeks. I adore the green sauce and my husband loves the salsa. We buy the whole chicken. Cover it with the fresh limes they give you. I love the charro beans and he loves the rice. I love the whole onion that comes with it, cooked to perfection. The corn or flour tortillas are homemade and fresh and hot. For our dessert I get the plantains with that sweet sauce. The people that work there are sweet, polite and efficient. We usually get it to go. Never had a bad meal! read more

The last time I visited this El Pollo Rico was prior to the pandemic. The chicken is still great. We enjoyed everything that we got. I did notice that the bar that they had in there before has been all but dismantled. I'm sure it's one of the results of the decline in business during the pandemic. The chicken was cooked perfectly - - moist and delicious. We absolutely loved the generous amount of fillings on the nachos and the baked potato with the chopped chicken was delicious! We have gone here several times. The atmosphere is that of any fast/casual restaurant. It has always been clean on our visits. The Chicken is always five star. The Papa Asada is consistently five star. I got curious and tried one of their sandwiches. It was a good solid two star. The service is always quick and friendly. First time at this location. Had a party of four. Three of us got grilled chicken and one beef tacos. My son said the beef tacos were good. His girlfriend, Mrs. Texas and I got grilled chicken. They got white (breast and wing), I got dark (leg and thigh). The leg was good, but the wings were dry, I brought the thigh home. The rice was also very bland and dry. The beans were very flavorful but they were crunchy. Flies were also an issue. The margaritas were good, and you can get them to go !!! We may return in the future. I love this new location and it still has that new car smell. We arrived for an early lunch and pretty much had the restaurant to ourselves. We both ordered their tacos Combo with rice and beans. While awaiting our food we loaded up at their robust condiment bar. Jalapenos with onions and a variety of hot sauces quickly grabbed my attention. My tacos were ordered with corn tortillas and they were 4-star quality. The barbacoa was OK not the quality that you receive down the road at the Mexican market but AOK. Best tasting flame grilled chicken anywhere! Honestly, the flavor captures all that's good about bbq...I just wish they could capture slightly plumper chickens! My guy and I devour a whole chicken and the two (1/2 pint?) sides in one sitting. I always order an extra onion so we don't fight over it. The grilled whole onion is fantastic. The chips are fresh and not salty (win! No chapped lips!) and the salsas are fresh with the heat reflecting drought conditions or not. (Drought=spicier) The drive-thru is convenient, which I use over taking chances with delivery. I've never eaten inside or ordered anything else other than the chocolate flan once. Had a bit too much gelatin consistency for me. I will say that for the price of $20.00+, and picking it up myself, three tacos made from the whole chicken meal per person left me scrounging the fridge later for a midnight snack. I mean, Costco sells HUGE roast chickens for $5.00....but they don't have those grilled onions, so.....(sigh). I use the drive thru. The beans are good, the chicken is good- spiced just right. The rice is ehh but guys!- the steak burrito is a winner.

The staff is unfriendly. If you call to place an order on the phone they act like you are annoying them and hang up ASAP after you place the order. No bye or is there anything else. Have been going here for 8 years food is very consistent, even better is the staff. Always friendly and welcoming. One day my 3 year old fell backwards in his chair as fast as could I pick him up Nancy and Patty had rushed from behind the counter with a full line inside and at the drive through to come help me console him. He's now turning 7 and every time we come in they say "Hello friend." I only go during lunchtime when they're working never had a issue with my order, the only 2 times I have had a issue is with pickup orders at night. ¡Muy delicioso! My husband and I have been coming here for the past few months and we are never disappointed! Everything from the chicken dinner and carne asada to the chicken soup has always met our expectations. We prefer to eat inside so we can utilize the salsa bar and load up on fresh cut cucumbers, peppers, and salsa as well as the free chips to go along with the oversized portions we always seem to get. I have nothing bad to say except the inside of the building is a little dated looking. Everyone is always accommodating to our needs and friendly. The food is excellent. Being from California we're used too El Pollo Loco. We moved here and immediately we were so sad that there are none around. I feel absolutely terrrible it took us over a year to make it here. This place makes el pollo loco look like a play doh chicken factory. The place was spotless. The salsa was fresh and incredible. The chicken... holy crap I want to snuggle with it at night.
