It's unfortunate that it's come to leaving a 2 star review for one of our "go to" restaurants. We order to go at least once a week from this location since we have little ones at home and work full time. The food is incredible, but 99% of the time when we get it to go something is missing. We have spoken with each manager over the years and suggested doing as Pluckers does and making sure to show each customer what is in their bag, but apparently to the manager Gabriel, that's too much of an effort on their part. When we call and are told this is an on going issue, you'd think they'd put a little more customer service into their company. Here's to another night of a kiddo without their food and yet another "credit" to our name. I think it's time to finally find a new texmex restaurant in our area. read more

Was the best Mexican restaurant in Austin - until they stopped making their own chips. They now buy low quality, overly salty chips, that are horrible. The waiter said everyone has been complaining about these chips. The other locations didn't change, only this one for some reason. My family will not return to this location. read more

Food here is excellent traditional Mex with a sprinkle of Te-Mex. They have the best in house salsa with fresh chips. That's what keeps me coming back. The service is great unless you opt to sit at the bar as unfortunately I have tonight. I kind of feel invisible here as they are busy making drinks and taking orders online or washing dishes but no attention given to the patrons who happen to choose to eat at the bar so they don't look so pitifully lonely eating at a table alone. I am thinking of going and asking for a table so I can get better service because the two bartenders less than 10 feet away obviously do not have the energy to tale3 steps to take my order. One of which can't step away from her texts to acknowledge her customers. Unfortunate! I'm hoping this experience does not turn me away from this place because I really enjoy the food. After a four hour drive with high hopes of good food, I am severely disappointed. Finally got attention from one of the bartenders after roughly 20 minutes. (Only 3 patrons at the bar). The other bartenders still checking her messages and staring off into space. Must've a relative of the owners to still have a job with such terrible customer service. By the way she was quick to run over and grab the tip when one of the patrons cashed out. No "Thank you for coming in" or anything. I was able to order an appetizer, shrimp tejanos, which are absolutely amazing! For my main course I will get it go, oh wai, maybe not. A roach just strolled across my menu. What unfortunate timing! I am very picky about where I eat my mexican food. But something about this place was just very inviting. We went in and I instantly fell in love with the interiors. I love bright colors and quirky decor! We ordered veggie quesadilla, veggie fajitas, fried avacado tacos (I dont remember the actual name) and a watermelon cocktail. The portions were huge! The quesadilla was the single most yummiest veggie quesadilla I have eaten! The veggie fajitas were tasty too. It came with a side of corn rice, black beans and an jalapeno. All the food also came with pico de gallo, cheese, lettuce and guacamole. The sides were fresh and the vegetables were juicy. I did not however enjoy the avocado tacos (not my taste, I guess). The tacos came with mexican rice and black beans. The waitress helped us out while we figured out our menu. Will definitely recommend this place to vegetarians. read more

An extra star for service, as otherwise I would have given a one star. My husband and I hadn't been to a Serrano's in years, so decided to try this one for a change: Atmosphere: Kind of a no frills restaurant. Looks tired inside. Has several TV's going, so don't expect a nice atmosphere--the restaurant is just one big room. They do have lots of booths, however. Service: Great. We were waited on promptly but never rushed. Everyone working there was friendly. Drinks: I got the classic margarita. This was the worst margarita I've ever had in my life. It just tasted like syrup-y margarita mix. Horrible! My husband agreed when he tried it. How can a Mexican restaurant get by having horrible margaritas?? My husband got the perfect margarita, which is their higher-end margarita. Just okay. They put orange juice in it, which I didn't like. On happy hour for $6. My husband ordered two. Food: Good variety of menu items, but we were not crazy about the food at all. Very mediocre. Chicken was difficult to cut into. I ordered a side of veggies and it came with two mushrooms and three slices of squash. Pricing: Prices are good--HOWEVER--we were overcharged for the perfect margaritas. They charged $6.50 instead of $6. When we brought it to our server's attention her response was, "oh, I'm sorry-- I'll correct it." It was obvious that they know they are charging more than what is on the menu, so check your bill. 3 times i placed pick up orders. First off they give u like 35-40 min wait to pick up. All i ordered was soup at a non busy time. When i arrive at the location at the time i waited another 10 min in the waiting area for pick up before i had to go behind the curtain to the bar and i asked excuse me i been waiting here 10 min is there anyone that can help me with my order? Instead of apologizing i could tell she was annoyed n just pointed to a guy who happened to be walking up with it. Yall dont answer your phones either. Worst experience ever. I brought my family here to eat, and what happened next is unbelievable. Our food took too long to come out and when it did it was one plate short, no biggie. When my waitress went back for the nachos, the asshole manager decided that was an opportune time to let her have it, about rolling napkins. I watched and listened for 5 minutes before I got up to interrupt them so I could get my daughter's food on the table. As the waitress escapes to go take the food, she was holding, to our table, I confronted the manager about taking time away from my waitress' duties. He took that opportunity to yell at me from across the restaurant, "you don't ever tell me what to do!" Excuse me? Who does that? Then he proceeded to kneel at our table and ask us why our food did not come out with the rest of it!! Huh!? After a few moments of him trying to get on our case and drawing attention to our table, he asks me to leave. Hahaha.. Gladly. You don't deserve my money anyways. As far as the waitress goes, I will figure out how to tip you for the work you were held away from. I truly apologize that you have to deal with that asshat. read more

I went to Serranos with my brother and my mom when she came into town for a meeting. We came in kind of early and were surprised at how bright it was inside. Normally you go to a restaurant and its a little bit darker. I don't know if here they wait until later to dim the lights but it was almost a little uncomfortable how bright it was. We were seated quickly at a booth and our order was taken quickly but the menus sat on our table for a good 10 minutes before our waitress finally realized we didn't need them anymore. This unfortunately was an indication of the service to come. Often times I would be out of soda and would have to flag the waitress down in order to get more. We split the cheese quesadilla and beef and chicken fajitas. The quesadilla was pretty good and the beef was good but the chicken definitely was over cooked and dry. It was nice that they provided cheese with the fajitas as many places charge extra but it still was not enough for us. Guacamole was decent but nothing special. Overall Serranos is just another mexican food chain trying to make another buck off not so great food. read more

Well, it appears after reading some of my review, I'm not alone. I really liked my food here. I really liked the ambiance of the restaurant. The problem of course - TERRIBLE SERVICE. We went to Serranos as a family. Myself, my wife, our son Gavin (5) who is autistic and his caretaker and my life long best friend Russell. Gavin was very hungry and crying for something to eat as soon as we arrived at the restaurant. I ordered grilled cheese for him as soon as we sat down and asked the waiter to please rush it because my child was starving. We got our drinks and ordered. Out comes my food and everyone else's food EXCEPT for the kid's. Now my kid is just flat out hungry and completely pissed off that everyone else is eating food and he got nothing and starts to make it vocally known. I pull the waiter's attention and ask him what's going on and apparently he didn't even put in the order for my son. I almost lost it and released the beast upside his little blonde fratboy head. Instead I tried (and didn't succeed) to calm my son down and continued to eat while everyone in the restaurant glared at our table and my very vocal upset child. I will not be returning to this restaurant unless something magically improves (which I doubt) read more

We are in town visiting for a concert in the area and decided to try Serranos because they were close to our hotel. Happy hour is from 3-7 :). The salsa was okay we would have preferred a little hotter salsa. I order a cheese quesadilla for my children with yellow cheese and for something so simple it was probably one of the best I've tried. The cheese and tortilla made it. I also ordered the blackdrum fish tacos which were fantastic. There was enough fish you could actually taste it. We also ordered some bacon wrapped cheese and serrano pepper shrimp that were amazing. Horrible bar service. I came in with my mother at about 2:30pm today. We simply wanted to grab a quick drink before heading home for the day. We sat at the bar for about 5 minutes until the bartender made her way over and said she was slammed and she'd "be right with us." There was one couple and two other singles at the bar, and the restaurant area was not packed by any means. Another few minutes passed and she asked if we wanted a food menu. We politely said "no, thank you we just want a drink." She then walked away and tended to her other bar patrons' checks before even taking our drink order. 12 minutes into our visit, she finally asked what we wanted to drink. We both ordered a Mexican martini, no salt. I left to use the restroom, and was still drink-less by the time I returned. 5 more minutes passed and we still had no beverages, not even water to hold us over, she had cleared a set of empty plates from the bar, and was reading her tips. Clearly not making our beverages. We walked out. You do not blatantly ignore customers at your bar. read more

In Austin you've got authentic Tex-Mex and gringo Tex-Mex. As much as I like it, Serrano's isn't authentic Tex-Mex. However, I think that gringo Tex-Mex has its rightful place in Austin's cuisine scene. I'm no Tex-Mex snob. Serrano's is solid. I come here for lunch with coworkers every now and then, and it's always a positive experience. The waitstaff is attentive without hovering, the food is really tasty, and the chips/salsa/beer flow like agua. The lunch specials are cheap--$5-8--and filling. You get to pick either one or two entree items and two sides. Or you can order from the big boy menu...which I tend to do a lot. From the lunch special menu my favorite combo is: beef taco, tortilla soup, pacifico rice, black beans. Recently I ordered the pork tacos off of the dinner specials menu, and they were great: pork bites stewed in green chiles on flour tortillas with a pile of pico, cilantro, and veggies to do with as you please. Really great! My problem is that I never crave Tex-Mex, authentic or gringo. But whenever I end up at Serrano's I'm happy. read more

The restaurant has a very cheap feel inside but the patio was a bit better. Food was not good. Queso came "warmish" {we sent it back to hit it up} and chips were all broken in small pieces. The taco fajita was dry and came cold as well. We've been here a few times and have always had good service and good food. This past Friday (10/19) will probably be our last though. Our server was sweet and as attentive as we needed, which wasn't much. The food runner seemed brusque, maybe he was offended that we had ordered nachos? Whoever cooked the chicken fajita meat was absolutely pissed that I ordered nachos, though. The meat had no flavor whatsoever. Not even a pinch of salt. The HEB preseasoned garbage is better. A waiter once asked if he could go to Starbucks after he took our order, the AC was out and then we had food poisoning, etc. specifically tonight we had a Togo order. I ordered a taco salad. Stopped in with a friend today because we were in the mall area and needed a quick place to eat. I'm glad I didn't make any promises since I had never been here before. The food was awful. Ambiance was ok... really loved the star lights. Otherwise, pretty standard for a Tex-Mex place... lots of seating, big fireplace up front. Service was decent, although there were only like four other tables in the entire restaurant...but the guy was prompt and did refills and boxes and whatnot - cool. Food was really bad. I had chicken tacos..there was a small salad with some pico on the side but the chicken was dry, dry, dry - and completely bland. The tortillas were godawful. My friend got a chicken quesadilla and was completely unimpressed. It looked pretty bad. Beans were unremarkable... definitely out of a can, and the rice was totally under seasoned and probably out of a box. Blah! So...another addition to my list of bad Tex-Mex. And again, I still do not understand how places like this are in business with all of the great Tex-Mex and authentic Mexican restaurants around. With regards to a previous review: Awful service? I have a solution. Sit down to eat 30 min prior to closing time. That way it's in their best interest to be quick with the service. I don't know what people mean by waited on hand and foot, but if you need something they need to get it for you. You could just get it yourself e.g. silverware, napkins but people would probably look at you funny. I don't know if Carne Guisada just sucks in general or if it sucks at this place, but either way it sucks. The "gravy" was way salty. The rice was very bland. The charro beans were runny. The only decent thing I had here was the salsa. It's very fresh and it's spiciness is about the level of Pace medium-hot. Fajitas should be a safe bet. I've had them here before and I think they we're good, but that was in summer. Things might have changed. Other than that it's a nice enough place. It doesn't have putrid interior decoration like some other Tex-Mex places. The row of Dia De Los Muertos skulls with different hats and mustaches on the wall were kind of a nice touch actually. The reason I got the Carne Guisada? I wanted to try something new and different, more entree like than just tacos/enchiladas/fajitas i.e. the standard Tex-Mex fare. This place is horrible for that. The way I see it your choices are Chile Relleno, Carne Guisada, Enchilada, Taco, Enchilada, Taco, etc Unless I'm getting fajitas, I'd probably rather go to Chili's which is kind of sad. read more

Serranos is our go to Tex-Mex place when we are too lazy to make dinner. The food is always good and has a nice spice to it. We have literally tired everything on the menu at least once (what can I say, we are lazy people) and have had no complaints. I LOVE the enchiladas and the hubby likes anything with full blown Serrano in it. The service has never been a problem here for us. And when it is busy we usually ask for a patio seat. And get waited on fast! Watch out for the margaritas however. In true tex-mex style you get a bowl and those bad boys can knock you over! read more

We ate here last night, and found the chips fresh, the salsa flavorful, and the food quite tasty. The brisket enchiladas are like sex on a plate--take your time and slowly savor every bite. A demerit for cilantro (not a favorite of mine) and another for being slightly skimpy on the tequila in the house margarita, but good overall, and we'll be back. The food here is great. It's always hot and fresh and the tortillas, as noted, are incredible. This can not be said enough. THE SERVICE IS AWFUL. Someone needs to take control of the waitstaff and train them or let them all go and hire some decent help. We had to ask for everything. Water, a waiter, silverware, tortillas, the bill...you name it. And I'm not one of those "upity you have to wait on me hand and foot type of people". JUST ACKNOWLEDGE US ONCE IN A WHILE FOR CHRIST SAKES! And one more thing...there is a lady making hand made tortillas, while this is great, the waitstaff should not be grabbing them with there bare hands and bringing them to the table. Serranos is one of the better Tex-Mex restaurants in town, although, a few of their dishes aren't up to par: always good bets are the queso, chicken/steak fajitas and enchiladas. Always served up hot and delicious. Management and servers aim to please, that's a good sign. I did have a neg experience on shrimp/bacon dish: bacon came out undercooked/raw and at $17 a plate, not worth it. I kept looking at others eating their yummy chicken fajitas and was bummed out, man. Management gave me a credit for the undercooked bacon, so I've got give them credit for making up for it. I'll be back again, for sure. I just wish there were more places set a higher bar for Tex-Mex like Serranos - the old Posados on Wells Branch was the best TexMex in town but they've closed up shop, which is unfortunate. read more

This was our "GO TO" Mexican restaurant for lunch/happy hour/large parties. I literally have eaten there once a week for a long time....HOWEVER, it only takes one bout of food poisoning to make me NEVER go back. I missed a full day of work because of their shitty food handling. In addition to this, I called Serranos because I wanted them to know that when I got the chicken taquitos, I got violently ill. You know what the Manager, Tyler Johnson told me? "He had eaten the sour cream all day" "He has not gotten any complaints on the chicken" - Not that he was sorry, not that they would make it up to me, Not that he feels horrible....He didn't care. We had an interesting experience tonight. This is a place we eat at frequently, but I will not be going back. My husband ordered a margarita on the rocks and it didn't taste quite right, so the young waiter took it to the back and when he returned he was without our drink. He told us that the manager TASTED OUR DRINK and deemed it fine, so there was nothing they could do. No offer of another drink or at the very least take that drink off of our tab. Let me start by saying the food is fantastic. During this COVID Pandemic my wife and I have taken advantage of free delivery with favor from time to time. We immediately put them towards the top of our list. Recently though, we placed an order to add avocado and sour cream with our enchilada meal. You would think that some of these items would come as sides with an enchilada plate. Without warning and not posted on any menu, we were charged $5.00 for avocado and $2.00 for the smallest spoonful of sour cream. Quick math makes that $9.00 which is close to the entire "Enchilada Dinner" price. Here is where I get upset... I call the restaurant and ask to speak with a manager. I just wanted them to be aware that the charges did not make much sense and our point In ordering with them was to support their business. The manager proceeded to blame this on favor as he added a "better than attitude" to the conversation. I think people underestimate the power of customer service and how far it goes. We loved the place but taking advantage of customers with pricing and providing poor customer service afterwards is disappointing. Take responsibility and be open minded to possibly fixing a mistake that is easy to fix. My point was to keep this from happening to another customer because again, the food is really good. Needless to say, we will be taking our business elsewhere. In dark times that we are facing, seek to be a positive light for others. This manager and restaurant just spread more darkness rather than harmony and joy. He also charged me $9.00 for avocado and a spoonful of ranch to a customer who has ordered with them well over 15 times since lockdown. Come on guys!!! read more

They actually refill your chips when they're down to crumbs instead of waiting until you're down to paper! AMAZING. Their fajitas are very good, and the wife loves the enchiladas. The service is usually decent, though on this last visit, we had some bored waitstaff watching a TV that was just over our heads, cheering about whatever was on it. A bit rude. Otherwise, nothing to complain about. Since Chuy's is so ridiculously busy and El Mercado's fajitas suck now, this is our family's go to for Tex-Mex. read more
