We're here about once a week, typically for brunch. My husband says the margaritas are his favorite in town and my whole family LOVES the salsa. The cheese enchiladas and beef fajita nachos are wonderful. The beef fajitas are well flavored and well cooked. The flour tortillas are fresh and the breakfast tacos are massive. The hosts are always friendly. The waitstaff at brunch, like all other things, can be a little hit or miss, but for the most part, they've been fast, friendly, and accurate. We came here as part of our library/reading date day. Shana picked the restaurant this time. We got the queso and chips as usual and it was good, they were not busy when we arrived so seating was quick and service was fast. I got chicken fajitas and Shana got fish taco's, we both were originally going to try new things but wanted comfort food that we know we like. We each got one drink as well. The food was all very good and lots of it, the server was friendly and fast. The biggest issue I had was really the next day, we went to Kerby Lane with 3 of us, we all got full meals and drinks and the total at Kerby was $1 more. This is with a surprise, We had an extra person and had more then enough food, one of the people had so much they didn't finish and I didn't quite finish my pancakes but ate all the food at Serranos. Not holding the staff accountable and that is why it is only a one star removed as most everything else was good. But given the fact we can eat for 3 at the same price as 2 here means we may not be back for some time. As the food was great at both places and one is cheaper that would be the way to go. It was quiet and there was a manager or supervisor going around now and then making sure everything was okay which was nice. I don't know if that is only during slow periods or all the time. It didn't happen on our last visit so it may be new. I am not sure we will be returning. This was our first time at Serranos. The mole enchiladas were outstanding. I really like classic mole, and this reminded me of the homemade my grandmother made for her enchiladas. (Next time, I'll try the mole chicken.) My daughter had enchiladas with a crema sauce. Also, outstanding. There was a minor error in my order; I wanted charro beans, not refried. This was corrected quickly, and the charro beans are great. They have a rich flavor, with a bit of heat. read more

My family has been eating at Serrano's for over 20 years, so I may have a little bias. We've visited different locations over the years, but they all offer the same big menu and we've usually had consistently good service. I really appreciate the wheelchair accessibility, with the large parking lot and room inside to move around. The decor is bright and this restaurant is always clean. They offer a full bar with great drinks, and the chips and salsa are always good. My favorite dish is the pollo perfecto, the portions are very generous. Terrible service! We arrived during happy hour but weren't sure that it was still going on. We asked our server about it, and she said she didn't know. What? She didn't know? She didn't offer to check; she just stood there. I finally found some information on the table and pointed out that it was happy hour for 10 more minutes so we really wanted to order. She looked annoyed. She just wanted to take our drink orders and walk away. I don't know if she was having a hard day, was disappointed to see only two diners at the table, or if she's just a cranky person. We were able to order an appetizer, a quesadilla, which was average. But as we ate, we needed some more sour cream. We couldn't get her attention. We tried and tried with no success. She finally showed up, our appetizer finished and handed us the check. We told her we wanted dessert. That annoyed her. Um, doesn't this increase her tip? The sopapillas we got were run-of-the-mill. Certainly nothing to write home about. Came here on a whim. Decided to order the Nachos de Camaron, Pollo Loco, and Tacos Al Pastor. Chips and salsa free at the table, no complaints on fresh salsa. 1. Pollo Loco Chicken was super tasty and the sauce has a nice cheesiness to it. What an addicting flavor from the sauce, adding to the tender wood grilled chicken. It came with rice and I opted for the charro beans. 2. Nachos de Camaron was hot, had shrimp, and had a refried bean paste and melted queso. Sloppy to eat, but satisfying flavor-wise. 3. Tacos Al Pastor. Honestly, I could pass on these. It lacked flavor umph in comparison to the chicken. I'd definitely come back for the pollo loco chicken dish. I liked the art and interior design. The staff is usually very attentive depending on who you get and ive never had something i didnt like but i do notice that if you place your order online througha delivery service it can occasionally get mixed up. They changed the inside to look a lot more modern than it used to be but i kind of preffered the older look. We eat at Serranos a few times a month. I have particular allergies that make it hard for me to eat Tex-Mexican. Unfortunately the hats generally what I always want to eat! This location has just undergone a renovation and they did such a great job. The interior and exterior have both been redone. The teams did a great job. This location is right on 1431 or Whitestone depending on how long you have lived here. The chicken fajitas, chicken quesadillas, beef enchiladas, and Queso burrito are some of our favs. Special call out to the crispy beef tacos...so good! Queso is a must for us! The service has always been good and consistent and we appreciate the way they handle busy nights. It's not fancy, but it's yummy and consistent and that's good for our family! Serranos is our favorite place to get good Tex-Mex (very reasonable for takeout); food with decent portion sizes! We also love that they give you a free bag of chips (their chips are crispy good and not too salty) & salsa with your order. Yes , these days businesses stop giving away freebies or free starters (due to inflation or trying to cut their own expenses), so I applaud whoever still keeps these customs going! We never dined-in so cannot comment about their ambiance or dine-in service however every time their to-go service was fast, and super convenient as they bring the food to your car! We would order through their website (for this location only), and go pick it up. Once you're there, just call them and tell them your parking number (for to-go parking spots), then they will bring the food to your car! Easy-peasy! They forgot one item twice out of the many, many, times that we ordered from them but they provided a complimentary item the next time we ordered their food. I would say that is good customer service since they owned up to their mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, so I'm not holding a grudge over food (unless I'm too hungry I might sometimes ). The food quality is consistent. Our favorites are below: - BEEF FAJITA - 21-day aged steak which is tender and flavorful) - CHILE RELLENO (ask to have sauce on the side if you get it to-go, so the deep-fried Chile won't get too soggy (or you can just warm it up in the oven to crisp up a bit), beef fajita quesadilla filling - VEGETABLE ALAMBRE - cooked to perfection and seasoned well. You can get it as a side too (trust me, you're welcome). - MEXICAN STREET CORN - just delicious. - SOPPAPILLAS - Unless you're a psychopath, who doesn't like fried dough with powdered sugar and agave nectar? I'm so sad - I moved back to Austin after being gone for 3 years... I was SO excited to eat at serranos, it was truly my favorite Mexican restaurant (even after a cricket jumped out of my taco in 2011). I raved about it for 3 years, dreaming about the day I get to dip those beautiful perfect tortilla chips into the most amazing salsa on the planet. Only to come back and find out they replaced their chips with some cheap, nasty, disgusting, headache inducing chips. Review is for a to go order via DoorDash, which I will note is 20% more expensive than ordering ($15 on app for three beef "Grande" tacos, vs. $12.50 in store). Nut allergy friendly. I waited about 16 minutes for my order due to an error in scheduled orders on DoorDash, so that is roughly how long order preparation probably took. The tacos came unassembled with a small container of ground beef on the side. They added a small order of chips and very spicy salsa, which I appreciated and would've loved to have while waiting for my to go order. The portions were alright, but I didn't think the flavors were anything special. The amount of ground beef was barely enough for the three tacos and it was very oily. The vegetables tasted fresh. Serrano's has been around the Austin area for many years. They consistently deliver quality and tasty. Tex-Mex cuisine. The restaurant has a very comfortable and enjoyable vibe to it, plus they have the tables spaced so you can have a conversation with your dining companions in the restaurant. Service is friendly, attentive, and efficient. This visit was with a larger group - 10 +/- and handled separate checks with ease and did not charge a mandatory gratuity, they left that up to our discretion, which I greatly appreciate. read more

I live nearby, but hadn't been to Serrano's since Christmas. Drove by the other day and thought it was a whole new restaurant! They've completely redone the place ... the outside is redone ... beautiful front doors, fresh paint in much more attractive modern colors... and inside there are murals, bright colors, new menus, etc. they kept the metal star lights but otherwise, everything is new. New seating new layout, new everything. Literally it is a new restaurant. We did get a very inexperienced, slow, young waiter who was clueless about the needs of his tables and would come in and out of the kitchen to do only one task at a time, not even checking on us for 10-20 minutes when we were out of chips and drinks, BUT -- the management is CHEFS KISS -- a woman and a man (appeared to be managers) both separately checked on all the tables during this time, replenished our drinks and salsas/chips, took extra drink orders for us, and were in general a delight to talk to, so they definitely know how to support their new and developing employees, and that's good for everyone. ! A+ all around. The food is great, tho my husband and I stopped in just for quesadillas and drinks for a happy hour mini date, and were seated in the bar area. I will have to come back and take pictures of the rest of the inside and outside when I have more time. Really lovely changes that make me want to come back, whereas before, we would choose other places over the outdated old look. Very nice place. 4 of us older ladies met at happy hour. We asked them to turn the music down and they did! Not every place will do that. We were actually able to converse. I was visiting a friend in Austin for a week and ended up going here three times. Each time we sat at the bar. The first time we had dinner, and it was pretty good though I'm not an expert on Tex-Mex food. I had Chile Rellenos, and it was delicious and satisfying. The bartender paid attention to our needs and noticed my friend wasn't enjoying his margarita (too much lime) and offered to replace it. The second time we went for just drinks. The third time we intended to have dinner but filled up on the chips and salsa - so again just drinks. The salsa was fresh and delicious. The enchilada plate was reasonably priced and since I prefer beans to rice, I opted for Refried black and Refried pinto beans. The Refried black beans were topped with cojita which was a nice choice. The suiza sauce was recommended by the waitress and I was pleasantly surprised with how flavorful it was. We also ordered a kid's quesadilla but it was only worth a couple of stars (hence the overall 4 stars review). The menu said they offered homemade tortillas but the kid's quesadilla was more fast food quality than a sit down establishment. Overall, I would definitely go back. read more

We went twice in a six week period and both times they charged us full price for drinks listed as $3 off. The first time we thought is was genuinely a mistake, so we let it go. The second time we called them out, and their offer was to give us a gift card for less than the difference charged. We accepted the gift card but left feeling annoyed. Everything came out as ordered, our drinks were never empty, the servers did a great job of checking in frequently without being intrusive about it. The food tasted great. We were a larger group, and not one person had any issues or complaints (which with a large group, including kiddos, can be a challenge). I've been a Serrano's fan quite a bit over the years, so it makes me sad to write a negative review for them, but this location (and maybe the chain) has gone downhill. The Pollo Perfecto used to be, well, perfect! It was a delicious blend of queso, chicken flameado, and fresh made refried beans and rice. Sadly, the last couple of times I've ordered the chicken was gristly, the queso was minimal, and the beans were chunky and a little bit greasy. Prices are pretty rough too, even taking into account Doordash / Uber Eats fees. If you are craving some good Tex-Mex, I'd recommend going into the restaurant itself rather than doing delivery. read more

By the time we got salsa and plates our nachos were cold (which everyone else sitting at the bar top had chips and salsa when they got there we were sitting there staring at a plate of nachos we ordered wondering if the bartender was hand washing plates or something for us and we almost got up to get our own salsa bc it was sitting in an uncovered container by the bar) I'll still go back... but could really use some work on service. The time before this we were seated and 20 minutes later after asking more than once we left. I understand places are short staffed right now but when you have all of 10 people in the restaurant dining and a bartender and 2-3 servers...? I sat at the bar and ordered a beer since I had just seen a lady send back a Margarita, get a replacement and wasn't happy with that one either. The bartender waiting on her was none too friendly so the lady kept the replacement. Service was sloooow as the bartender appeared incapable of waiting on more than one person at a time. We've been passing this place for years and have always talked about trying it out but usually end up at another tex mex restaurant across the street. Today their patio was closed so my mom and I decided to finally try out Serrano's. The patio was nice and covered (it was raining,) and we were sat right away for lunch. Our waitress was friendly and brought out our drinks right away, as well as answered all our questions about the items on the menu and sauces. The food was...meh. Salsa was good (spicy-which I like!) but the chips were nothing special and didn't seem too fresh. We both ordered the shredded chicken chimichanga which looks beautiful, but was highly underwhelming. It was filled with mostly rice and a bit of chicken. I am a chimichanga fanatic and would have appreciated it to be stuffed with cheese, green chilies, onion...anything else. But nope, it was mostly rice in a fried tortilla. The sauce and refried beans were good and maybe we just didn't order the right thing, but I don't think I would choose to come back over some Tex-Mex competitors. read more
