I feel very lucky to have chosen Extra Space Storage (ESS) in Herndon because the customer service is OUTSTANDING. On the day I went in to sign my contract, I actually ended up standing in there just chatting with the staff for a while after contract signing was finished. They are all very personable and knowledgeable. I had all of my questions answered and felt very confident that if i had any questions or concerns at anytime, someone would be available to answer them. I think these days, good customer service is hard to come by, and ESS in Herndon deserves a ton of praise. In regards to the facility itself, I don't have anything to really compare it to. I have the 5x10 unit, which perfectly fits the contents of my DC apartment. It is easy for me to just swing my the unit to add or remove items at any time, and moving everything into the unit was easy as well. Being a young woman, I also feel very safe coming and going to the facility at any time of day, which I also think is a very important thing.

Anjelica is amazing and attentive with a high sense of pride in her work and customer service orientation. I've never seen a cleaner, more organized storage place. I feel like my stuff is safe and cared for here!

I booked a storage unit on Saturday. Malik from CubeSmart called me around 3:00 pm asking me to…read moremake the payment before 5:00 pm, since they would be closed on Sunday and needed time to process my access code. I completed the payment before 3:05 pm the same day. Afterwards, I tried calling multiple times before 5:00 pm, but every time I reached a message saying they were out of office. On Sunday at 9:30 pm, I arrived with a U-Haul truck and could not get inside the unit. I used their video assistant, and a representative named Lisa gave me a code. She also told me the building locks at 10:00 pm for security purposes, which meant I had only 30 minutes to unload. I got inside the building, but the code did not work for the elevator. When I called back, they told me my unit might actually be in the Annex building at 300 Mill St.--even though my welcome email clearly listed 223 Mill St, Vienna, VA 22180. At the Annex building, the first thing I noticed was the urine smell and mouse traps. The old carts barely fit through the single-door entrance. When I reached my unit, there were mouse droppings inside (I have photo proof). As we were unloading our last load, the building locked at 10:00 pm, leaving half of my belongings trapped inside a rodent-infested unit with the door open. Lisa had reassured me not to rush and said I could call back to get help after 10:00 pm--but nobody answered despite my repeated calls for 20 minutes. By then, I was completely overwhelmed. This was one of the most dreadful experiences I have ever had with a company. Stay away!

Kind is a word I rarely use to describe a business. But I think of this business and it's people as…read morekind. Adeb used kind words when processing my rental unit. Nate was very kind when he unlocked the door and processed my check out interrupting his meal break. One of the owners that stopped by was kind in allowing his staff to conduct business and not power tripping his position or agenda. The business was kind by offering affordable specials. And even more kindly in not using their specials as a trap. With a month to month lease, I could have been stuck paying numerous increases while deployed as I would not have any opportunity to change storage facilities while away. But this didn't happen. The two increases I received were reasonable over the year plus a few months that I rented there. This is a kind business by practice and by people. It's nice to know that they still exist. One aspect that I would like to see improved is the connection between the internet specials and the units divulged when renting. Getting a straight answer was next to impossible. I ended up not getting what I wanted because I didn't have the correct screen shot for the special I was requesting. Every staff member (all three of them) in both of my rental transactions told me something didn't exist when it did on the internet. Even pressing them for it did not help. They honored what I could prove but did not produce what I knew existed. Time constraints restricted how it all played out. It would also be helpful if they had common practices, percentages and schedules for increases. Guessing at how a business will conduct themselves is never assumed to be in the customers favor. A month to month lease leaves the customer vulnerable. When on deployment for a year or longer, it offers no reassurance for the reasonable or kind.

I just ended a three-month stay here and--having had some subpar experiences with other storage facilities--couldn't be happier with this one. A few quick notes: --This place is spotless inside. It's new and it shows. --To get to your unit, you have to enter a code three times, so it feels pretty safe. --If you have any problem at all, the employees are very responsive. From opening an account to renting the on-site moving truck, they were very helpful all around. --Lots of parking near the elevators, making unloading pretty easy. --Two huge working elevators also help. If I had any recommendation for improvement, it would be for the facility to purchase an extra few carts, as people would sometimes need to wait for them on weekends. But all around, great facility.

On my move in day, I was told I could arrive at 9:30am to register and get into the storage unit. No one was at the facility when I arrived (and no sign saying they stepped away), and after calling multiple times and leaving messages I was unable to get in touch anyone at the store. It has been over 40 minutes of trying to access the store, and now the movers are waiting (and I'm paying them by the hour). I had to send the movers to a different drop off point so that I didn't have to pay them to wait for someone at CubeSmart to show up. This made an already stressful move even more stressful.
