I've been here twice now and enjoyed it both times! The space is really cute and lives up to the name - secret and savory. The restaurant is tucked away in a side entrance off the street inside a building with conjoining businesses. The food is so good! They have many options to choose from on their menu. From appetizers to noodle dishes and specials. The first time I tried the Kanom-Jean-Num-Prik. This was a flavorful and slightly spicy curry noodle dish. It is fun because you actually get to mix it all up yourself! When it comes out there is a big bowl of all the noodles and shrimp and veggies and then you pour the curry over it and stir it up. I also had some of the lemongrass wings and those were very tasty albeit a bit on the less meaty side. The second time I came I had the papaya salad to start, which was delicious and recommended! I also tried the Cucumber Moscow Mule which wasn't bad. I liked how refreshing the cucumber made it taste. For my main I had the Savory Galangal Sauce with river prawn. Now it really is just one prawn, a very large one. The sauce was amazing! I loved the flavor of the galangal. It comes with some veggies that you can mix in with the sauce. Unfortunately the prawn was not as meaty as it looked for its size. You have to literally scrape the meat off to get any. Overall I would enjoy coming back here to try another dish as they have so many that all sound interesting! read more

From the moment you walk in, the establishment is bright, airy, and everyone is happily creating these delicious dishes for diners. Food made happily is food made with love. They lit my candle for dinner for one which made my experience all the more pleasant and ambiance level upped. Ordered the Tom Yum with pork. Pork slices were thin with just the right amount of fat and meat per slice. Melts in your mouth. The broth, spice level 4 was refreshing and packed with lemon grass and Thai chili spice flavor. Coconut milk eased the palate. Definitely makes your tummy warm and tingly on a brisk fall day. Larb E-San Salad with beef to mix it up. Perfectly seasoned and made fresh. You can tell by the texture of the dish. The key with this is to douse the raw cabbage with the meat and get everything in one bite- piece by piece. This is a hidden gem in the city. I've been here before but realized I never wrote a review. Splurged and picked up a new year's eve meal for myself yesterday. My friend who lives in the neighborhood was racing about the softshell dry curry crab. So went with that, an order of rice and the Miang Kham a favorite appetizer of mine that I hadn't ordered here. Miang Kham is such simple ingredients but together they make a wonderful bite. Theirs has dried shrimp as one of the ingredients, and I always feel like it's healthy. I still prefer dungeness crab being raised in Seattle, but the crab curry was tasty well seasoned I got it at mild spice level which was just right for me. This is a really convenient spot on Market if you're having trouble deciding where to go or the waits are too long elsewhere. There are always open tables when I've come here - great for us, but probably not so much for them... The interior is pretty minimalist, and they have 2 or 3 little tables outside which is nice and fun to people watch. Secret Savory's menu stands out because it features dishes from different regions of Thailand. I highly recommend the traditional jackfruit salad if you like flavor. It's phenomenal. Other standout dishes are the soft shell crab and kao soi. The miang-kham is a nice experience. The cocktails are alright, nothing to write home about. It's not the cheapest Thai food so it wouldn't be my pick for takeout, but I enjoy eating there. read more

We were walking towards Pestle Rock (trying our luck without a reservation) when we spotted Secret Savory in Ballard. Their menu is so vast and surprisingly has dishes that we didn't recognize (we love trying new foods). They had immediate available seating, so we decided to try them, and it was a thumbs-up! The food is more 4.5 Stars. The staff was very nice, so I'm rounding up to 5 Stars. I recommend reservations as tables are limited. Black Pepper and Garlic Crispy Soft Shell Crab, $15 - 5 Stars Served with a light sweet plum sauce, this was delicious! The soft shell crab pieces are perfectly crunchy and the seasoning is tasty. Traditional Jackfruit Salad, $12 - 5 Stars Menu: Boiled young jackfruit gently pounded with traditional northern homemade curry paste and kaffir lime leaf. Topped with grape tomatoes, fried garlic, kaffir lime leaf. Served on the bed of green leaf. The presentation alone is worth an extra star. This jackfruit mixture is intensely flavorful with a curry and a Chinese shrimp paste taste (I think that's their secret ingredient). It's very unusual and incredible, but the strong flavor might not be everyone's taste. I personally loved it. Trio Sea Bass, $20 - 5 Stars Menu: Deep fried wild Japanese sea bass topped with caramelized chili paste, pickled garlic, and tamarind sauce. This Japanese sea bass is great; it doesn't have fins. The sauce is delicious too and goes great with the deep fried bites of fish. Thai Spicy Herbs with Seafood, $19 - 3.5 Stars Menu: Mixed Thai herb stir-fry sauce with finger root, bell pepper, basil, and kaffir lime leaf. Choice of mixed seafood or Japanese sea bass This is the only dish that was partially disappointing. The green beans were undercooked (such a basic rookie mistake), and the squid was too chewy. Other than that, the seasoning and sauce is very flavorful. I think this would have been a better dish with the sea bass. read more

What an awful experience dining here with guests. We encountered rude, unprofessional, impolite, and totally useless team at this restaurant. Noisy, dirty, and unacceptable for the Ballard scene. This restaurant and people working here bring shame to otherwise lovely Thai food places in the region. How does one feel when you are in person at the restaurant and the waitresses ignore you for the take out orders? Well, that happened three times during our team of four while getting seated, clarifying menu and getting their attention to get the check. I think that's a new normal in places like this who thrive on take out orders rather than dine-in customers. Spice level is one thing but properly spiced food with fresh ingredients, special when the place is located immediately next to entrance to Ballard Sunday Market is a totally another thing. I can't believe it took me this long to try this place out. SO GOOD. Normally when we get Thai, it's for a casual dinner and we don't have the mental energy of figuring out what to order... so we gravitate to a thai place even closer to us to get pad kee mao. However, it was my birthday and I wanted something unique, and Secret savory's menu definitely had unique offerings. We tried: - jack fruit salad - Tom yum noodles - yum woon sen - seaweed chicken roll - soft shell crab dried curry - pad thai Honestly, everything was a hit (except the chicken roll, but it is probably because I got it togo and it was no longer crispy). I especially enjoyed the crab curry and jack fruit salad. I love that we have such rocking thai options in Ballard. Keep up the GREAT work!!!! This is our go-to spot in the area for Thai food. The service has always been great and the ambience is good. The food, though, is why we keep coming back. My husband likes the soft shell crab and I like the pad thai and green curry, but honestly everything has been on point. I also like their really affordable lunch menu. The food is unique and the dishes are a lot different than what you typically see at a Thai restaurant, and I mean that in the best way possible. For an appetizer, we got the soft shell crab which was amazing and the hung Lae curry was also pretty good!! The menu is pretty big so looking forward to coming back again and trying more. I got a takeout order. I usually get pad kee mao for Thai food, but that wasn't an option and I was also feeling adventurous so I went with their namesake chicken noodle entree. The soy noodle in the dish piqued my interest as well as the rich sauce and shitake mushrooms. Unfortunately for me, the noodles were soft/soggy, and even with the pickled jalepeno sauce on the side, I felt like it needed more acid to brighten it up. Secret savory has become my go-to Thai place in Ballard. Literally all hits and no duds so far. Phad See Ew - fantastic. Crab Fried Rice - indulgently delicious. Garlic Green Beans - unbelievably good for something so simple. The chicken Larb was a little on the acidic side and could've used some more lettuce/veggies/peanuts to cut it, but we still finished every bite. Their Panang Curry is the bomb too, and I plan to try some of the other curries next time. One drawback when I ate at the restaurant was that it was on a toasty summer day, and it was literally unbearably hot inside. Thankfully they have a few tables in the shade out front and we sat there, but if it weren't for those I think we would've had to go elsewhere for dinner, or order to go. Management would be wise to invest in some window-mount AC units for the summer months. Other than that I really have no complaints about my experiences so far. This is a little hidden gem for sure. They have definitely put in time and effort to make the ambiance and aesthetic all fit in together. I was very surprised at how small this place was, but also how much room there was too. You'd have to go in to see what I mean. Waitress/servers were very sweet. They were also very cleanly. In between serving food, making drinks, taking orders, and welcoming and seating new customers, they were wiping down tables and menus. That's considering there where only two of them! Now, the food was definitely delicious. Very savory, I was beyond impressed. My friend and I ordered the Thai sausage, papaya, southern curry, with white and sticky rice on the side. The reason I didn't provide a full 5 stars is because the portions were rather small. My friend had to order another order of sausage and rice because the curry wasn't enough for him. We're used to having curry in a bowl and it came on a small platter. So if you're really hungry or normally eat more than most, order another plate of something to enjoy what else they have on their menu. In all, I would recommend this spot! The secret is out and it's very savory. Secret Savory is one of a handful of Thai spots in the area and it was a toss-up between them when looking for some dinner. The others around (which I'm sure I'll get to) had way more people. We peeked into the window of Secret Savory and there was hardly anyone in. It looked nice so Secret Savory was in. The setting and ambiance are very nice. Having an intimate, lounge-y look which is very cool. Modern looking tables and local art on the wall for sale. To start we got the lemongrass wings. These things are DEEP FRIED. They are crispy, they are crunchy, and they are as fried as you can get. Good? Oh yeah. The lemongrass sauce was more like a paste but very good. The wings were good and very shareable which I like. About 6 in all so shareable with at least a few people. Some were meatier than others, but overall, pretty good. For entree I got the Royal Kao-soi. Originating from northern Thai cuisine styles according to the menu, it contains noodles of course, coconut paste, shallots, lime and crispy noodle and more. Sitting in the middle of it all is a huge chicken drumstick (or tofu if you diet calls for it). It was great. Comes spicy and everything mentioned that comes with it has a lot of flavors so there isn't anything bland about this entree or probably any of them if this is a good example. Service was pretty good. The only criticism I had with it was there was hardly any noodles with the Kao-soi, and I was left with so much of the curry sauce. It comes with a spoon to scoop it, but it would've been nice for more noodles so that you enjoy the curry more. Great otherwise though and would definitely like to come back as the menu has quite a bit of choices and aren't the run of the mill Thai options, even though there are a few of them. Definitely good for a date night or being out with that friend who goes wild for Thai food. read more

They seemed to have some vegan options and/or at least be able to modify to make many dishes vegan, so I stopped in for dinner one evening. Large menu with all sorts of different dishes, priced on the higher side, but this is Ballard after all. I ordered 2 dishes for myself: the Chinese broccoli with garlic sauce ($11 plus tax) and Phad-see-ew ($14 plus tax; made vegan by omitting the egg). I ordered the latter 4/5 on the spiciness level and it was pants-shittingly spicy; 5/5 would've given me an ulcer. Both dishes were tasty. The broccoli dish had a pleasant lightly sweet and mostly garlic soy sauce-based sauce, with perfectly cooked gai lan. The pad see ew came with blocks of deep fried tofu, gai lan, and wide/flat rice noodles--cooked perfectly, a little too spicy for me, but I can't complain. The flavours were not all that complex in either dish. Overall, tasty food, a little pricey, fairly authentic, and good, accommodating service. I'd return if in Ballard. We came here for a Saturday lunch. My friend made a reservation, but when we arrived at 12:30PM no one was here at all. We ordered a soft-shell crab, a jackfruit salad, and a Thai sausage for appetizers. For entrees, we ordered a phad-see-ew, a southern green curry, a Panang strip loin, and a Royal Kao-Soi noodle soup. Everything was delicious: The soft-shell crab was similar to the Japanese style but slightly different - softer, less battered, and more seasoned; The jackfruit salad blended the unique flavor of jackfruit very well with the spices, but it was very spicy; The Thai sausage was very tasty but a bit greasy IMO. All the entrees were great too: Our favorites were the phad-see-ew and the Panang strip loin. My personal favorite was the Royal Kao-Soi noodle soup. My friends loved the strip loin for its flavorful curry base, but the beef strip felt a bit overcooked to me. I loved the Kao-Soi noodle soup for its soft yet chewy egg noodles and its tasty soup base. The tender chicken thigh in the noodle soup perfectly absorbed the flavor of the broth. Price was very reasonable, the service was good, and the interior decor was bright and cute. Will return. read more

Traveled to Seattle, and went to Ballard area and I found the gem. Thai food with a flare of Northern Thai cuisine. Small cute place that offered many choices of curry. I ordered Crab meat curry with vermicelli, and that is a bomb!!! The pulled-chicken sour soup(Northern style soup) was really something different from Tom-Yum soup. And I love the Kang Yi rah, it is another kind of red curry with seafood. I love that too. Great portion. The service was run by one lady, but she handled many tables at the same without frustration. I decompressed at home for about an hour, then jumped back into the Friday commute because this Yelper was feeling restless and hungry. In search of dazzling flavors, of course. Meandered through a handful of neighborhoods, and ended up along Market in Ballard. Found a monstrous parking spot...so where's my Hummer or Escalade? lol Tried the new parking meter system using one's license plate, no more stickers. Typed in Hot and New Ballard via my trusty Yelp app. Secret Savory popped up top of the list and located only few hundred feet away. Okay, why not? It's just down the street from Sonic Boom, a favorite indie music store. Found Secret Savory...very bright, sleek, modernesque interior. Had a chance to checkout the menu while waiting for an available two top. Very gracious and smiling pair of wait persons, which buoyed my spirits dining solo. My selections arrived in a reasonable amount of time too. Strategic menu ordering also helped. Garlic and Black Pepper Crispy Soft Shell Crab arranged on shredded lettuce and copious garlic bits with a sweet plum dipping sauce ($14) hit the spot. Not soggy or overbreaded. Nice crunch and tender crab! I also ordered the Eggplant with Shrimp Paste ($13) and some steamed Jasmine rice ($2) to accompany the tasty crab. This entree came out piping hot and vegies not overcooked. I was surprised that it was very generous prepared with onions, celery, green peppers, red peppers, minced pork, and plump shrimp...not just eggplant. Delicious with interspersed with tiny bites of freshly steamed Jasmine rice! Generous and shareable entree servings, so the rest of it was boxed up with a orchid garnish to take home. Now I have three Thai favorites located along hopping Market, Pestle Rock, Sen Noodle Bar, and now Secret Savory. The latter a much welcomed addition to the Ballard restaurant scene. Came here because the reviews really hyped this place up and I've been looking for a good Thai place in Seattle. Normally I'm super basic and order pad whatevers to be very safe and I'll try my boyfriend's meal because he's usually the more adventurous one.. but I wanted to branch out yesterday. Khao soi noodles 2/5, $15- this was actually pretty bland, i was super let down because I have been craving this and the reviews hyped it up!! I like the one at bangrak market way better. Tom yum 3/5, $18- my boyfriend has been on the hunt for good Tom yum soup. This was honestly almost there but didn't quite hit the spot and definitely not worth the exorbitant price. That's how I felt about most of the food I tried here. Soft shell crab curry 4/5, $22- this was the best of everything I tried. Definitely interesting, the crab was fried perfectly! However... it doesn't come with rice so you'll need to put in an order for $2. My friends ordered the tom yum noodle soup and Kanom-Jean-num-ya-pu ($21) and didn't like their food :( they said it was "not bad but not good either" Perhaps this was an off day?? Um speaking of amazing Thai food... I think this place is a bit of a hidden gem. I fully walked right past it the first time without realizing it, but boy am I glad we walked in for a late night dinner here because the food... o m g. I feel like most of my Thai restaurant reviews are going to sound overwhelmingly positive and that is honestly because Seattle is just blessed with so much good Thai food! You can't really go wrong here, there's only been one place so far I've been somewhat underwhelmed by, and it wasn't this one. The chef here graduated from the Le Cordon Bleu of Thailand, which is a claim that they can certainly back up given how good the food is here. I also like that this spot is open a bit later than other Thai places I've seen! They also have some unique dishes on their menu which I always appreciate. I need to come back and try some of my more standard orders like a curry or noodle dish to see how they do it compared to some of the other places I've tried in Seattle so far. read more

It's easy to miss this restaurant on the bustling Ballard street, but you'll be rewarded for stopping by. CONSISTENTLY DELICIOUS FOOD. My partner and I have eaten here three times, and it has consistently been a delicious experience. The tofu fried rice is so comforting and has such depth of flavor. That three spice level is perfect for me and is consistent when we order. The garlic broccoli is cooked so well and it's in such a delicious sauce that I spoon over rice. My partner got the fried fish, and it came with such an interesting, and yes, delicious sauce. I'm sorry I can't think of any other adjectives besides "delicious" to describe this food. A PLEASANT EXPERIENCE EATING IN OR TAKING OUT. We've picked up from here and the waitress has been so accommodating while we wait one or two minutes for our order. It was easy finding a parking spot for 5 minutes as we got pick up. There is also covered outdoor seating here, though we haven't seen that in use. The dining room is spacious and there have always been a few tables full when we've stopped by. When we've eaten in ourselves, the service has been very kind and accommodating. Ok we ordered to go on Sunday July 14th and spent $300 in food. Most the of foods were tasty. Pad Thai, pad see eu had good flavors. their spicy level is pretty spicy. Thai basil fried rice was not good. However, my husband's pad Thai had a long piece of metal wire in his food, like one of those stainless steel scrubber that fell apart. On top of that, we ordered a dish that had eggs in it and there was long hair stuck in the egg. So grossed out. Before discovering these things, I was going to come back and try this place again. But never again and feel compelled to leave a review. Hope they read this and pay more attention and be cleaner. Food taste I would give a 4 star but 1 star for obvious reasons. read more
