Crab & Avocado Benedict
Natalie P.

The crab Benedict at Schooner Later in Long Beach absolutely blew me away. For my first visit, I wasn't expecting such a mountain of crab -- but there was no shortage at all. Every bite was meaty, rich, and incredibly satisfying, and for $25, it felt like a total steal. The avocado was fresh, the flavors were balanced, and pairing it with fresh fruit made the whole plate feel even brighter. The staff was friendly and upbeat, and our waitress stayed attentive even though the place was super busy. We even got to meet the owner, who was just as warm and excited as we were to be there. For a first-time visit, it felt genuinely welcoming. I'll definitely be back.

Waterfront dining at its best....it doesn't get much better than this in Southern California (or anywhere, for that matter). I enjoyed a delicious breakfast here. The service is excellent and friendly. The food is prepared quickly. The coffee is great. All around great choice on a beautiful day

Such a wonderful restaurant to dine at for brunch. My friend and I visited on a Thursday morning with no long wait time. We waited about 15 minutes for a table facing the marina. Started off with some delicious Bloody Mary's. One of the best in town. I ordered their Classic Benedict with a side of cottage cheese and my friend had the crab Benedict with sweet potatoes fries. My friend mentioned the sweet potatoes fries were delicious. I had no complaints with my breakfast. Everything hit the spot! Server did mistake hash browns for cottage cheese, but she was nice enough to bring it on the side. Service was good and quick especially when it got super busy. Really enjoyed my time having breakfast outside by the water. Great start to begin my day!

We came here for lunch and sat outside with a great view of the boats in the marina. Service was very nice. I had crunchy Asian chicken salad, with enough to take home for later. It was very very good. Waitress was very nice and kept our drinks refilled. Last time I came here it was raining, but today I got to enjoy the sunshine.

I was honestly curious -- if this place is so good, why is it sitting at 3.5 stars on Yelp? After experiencing it for ourselves and reading through the reviews, I completely understand. The common complaint? Service. And unfortunately, we agree. From the moment we sat down, it was a waiting game. We waited quite a while before anyone came over just to take our drink order. After that, it was another 30 minutes before our waitress returned to take our food order. What made it more frustrating was seeing multiple servers standing around or walking past us without acknowledging that we were still holding menus and hadn't ordered yet. A simple check-in would've gone a long way. It was a beautiful day, and we opted for patio seating, which had a great vibe -- but the sun was beating down on us and the long wait made it less enjoyable. As for the food, it was a mixed bag. I ordered The Mess with a side of avocado. I actually enjoyed it -- chopped ham, crispy bacon, hash browns, and onions all came together nicely. My husband ordered the country chicken fried steak with extra gravy. Unfortunately, the gravy was overly salty with a strong rosemary aftertaste that overpowered the dish. Drinks were solid. The schooner of beer hit the spot, and the Bloody Mary was actually pretty good. Overall, the service really set the tone for us. Sadly, this will be our first and last time here for brunch.

Love this charming place on the water. We sat on the patio overlooking the boats. We started our vacation with 16 oz mimosas! Delish! Everyone enjoyed their meals. Service was excellent. Would definitely return and recommend.

Schooner or Later is a waterfront breakfast and lunch joint in Long Beach. It was an overcast afternoon, but the sun kept popping through so we decided to sit out on the patio. The view and fresh air were great. The patio is a good size and there are probably a dozen or so tables. There are only a few tables that are permanently covered and in the shade. They do have umbrellas for the tables, but they were not out when we visited. They also have heat lamps for when it is cold outside. There is plenty of parking only a few steps away from front of the restaurant. I decided to go outside of the box and ordered "The Mess". This is a blend of chopped ham, bell peppers, onion, hash browns, eggs, and cheddar cheese. It is $18.95 for a half size portion, and only $21.70 for the full size portion, so it's silly to not pay a few extra dollars and take any leftovers home. I ate about half of it, and it was pretty good as-is, but it was missing a little something. I had the rest at home and added sour cream which made it way better. I would definitely recommend adding sour cream, avocado, or chili which are optional add-ons at the restaurant. It also comes with two slices of sourdough toast, and there are several flavors of packaged jelly on the table. She had the Cinnamon Roll French Toast ($16.75), and added a side of scrambled eggs and sausage ($8.95). She said it was good, and the portion size is pretty generous. Service was prompt and friendly.

Had lunch with my buddy He suggested Schooner or later and I readily agreed. Lunch crowd was out, probably due to the gorgeous weather. So for the first time we sat inside. Still enjoying the views through the large windows. Nicely air conditioned so the temperature was comfortable. He ordered a beef eater and I had my standard crab and avocado melt. Both were tasty and we both cleaned our plates as usual. We always have a great time at Schooner or later.

Went here on a Friday for brunch. Greeted and seated outside in the patio section. Ordered its specialty schooner signature of bloody mary. One for me and one for my wife. Was served in minutes! The taste of bloody mary sings the birds of the sky of delightment! Ordered our breakfast entrees of eggs and potatoes. Received and was delivered in a timely manner. Food was great! No complaints. The ambiance was great. Was feeling the 75 degree weather over viewing the bay. I can smell the ocean water which was all part of the experience. Good food and Service! Plenty of free parking. Restrooms are outside of the establishment. I would definitely come back!

5 star Bloody Mary. 4 star food. 4.5 star service. Came with family for brunch. Waited about 1.25 hours for a table. (Expected). Extensive menu with lots of options.

Sat down on patio here and there is a nice view of the Long Beach Marina. I use to come to this place over a decade ago and the food and service were good- good was abundant and prices were great. I brought my granddaughter and she ordered silver dollar pancakes off the children's menu. I ordered steel cut oats. It is $10.95 for an approx. 1 cup portion. Everything- berries nuts, are extra $2 to $3.95 . I ordered a side of turkey sausage. $8.95 . It was literally 3 super thin & tiny slices of what tasted like Jimmy Dean sausage. The kids breakfast meal was 9.99 and just enough for a small child. The service was just ok- not everyone was super friendly. I did not want to write a bad review but I was really disappointed in this place and won't return when I am in town. Bill was $35 and it was so not worth it but for a view.

Kimberly H.

Been here a few times, love it, parking is always easy, but the spaces are small. Never waited too long. Great atmosphere, good food, great service. Large portions, and great flavor for a fair price. Indoor and outdoor seating. Very clean. Good views. Great drinks, and highly recommend and will return.

View of the marina from the patio.

They coated the chicken in a chili rub that gave it a sweet and spicy flavor when paired with their maple syrup. Served on top of a waffle and topped with an egg. I loved it and would probably order again on my next visit. My wife had the American plate which was your classic eggs, bacon, potatoes, and sourdough toast combo. TLDR; It's expensive, and not worth the routine visit, but worth the one-time stop in to experience the festivities. The Miracle pop-up at The Ordinarie is somehow even more decorated and extravagant than you'd expect from a seasonal pop-up. The line looks long outside, as there are no reservations, but it moves quickly since they hold everybody to a pretty strict 2-hour time limit. The drinks are good, the cups are cute, and everyone is festive. It's an all-around fun experience.  I think because of this, you do pay a premium price tag for food and drinks that are just good or okay. I think it's something that is worth the visit if you've never been and you enjoy getting into the Christmas spirit. I think that outside of the pop-up, The Ordinarie is a fun spot to check out in Long Beach. It't not a pillar of the food scene if you're a tourist, but it is a good, late night spot if you work in the industry nearby. They have a great late-night menu with a killer smash burger.

Bristy, our server, thoroughly explained the details of certain dishes such as the Mac & Cheetos. She also checked in on our table throughout the meal and came around often to refill our water. As for the food itself, it was very delicious. My favorite dish was the artichokes. They had a somewhat smoky flavor and the outermost leaves were crunchy and a nice contrast to the soft inside of the artichokes. They were also served in a tangy sauce that complimented the vegetable well. My friend's favorite item was the macaroni and cheese. It was chewy and creamy, and the pasta, which Bristy informed us was made in-house, was what my friend thought elevated the dish because it was a nice texture. We additionally ordered the gumbo which was also tasty but not as yummy as the other two dishes that we ordered. It is not a spicy dish if one is concerned about spice level. As for the ambiance of the restaurant, we enjoyed how the atmosphere felt casual and almost like you were sitting in somebody's house (the wallpaper and interior design is pretty) while still maintaining an elegant aesthetic design. There is inside seating what looks like a converted house? There is outside seating at tables or at the bar. The menu was interesting which had a theme of shrimp; there was eggs Benedict with shrimp, but not an item to order a regular one without it? Sure maybe could have ordered and asked without shrimp but pay the same price? Pass. Ok when I called they mentioned they serve brunch until 3? 3:30 I can't remember. The server mentioned they serve the brunch all day? Either way when I got to ordering this month on the menu it highlighted the shrimp po boy. I tried to order and nope, out. How can you be out of the item highlighted as the special in the middle of the day? When the place is not packed? I tried to order the lobster roll and again, out. I was tempted to order their short rib poutine since in theory it sounded good, but at this point I tried something simple I would hope they have in the kitchen chicken and waffles. The plate came and it looks good. If you look at the picture at the bottom of the chicken you can see a dark something. As I lift my chicken I found a huge burnt piece of breading pictured next. On top of the chicken is green onion I think? Who eats that with chicken and waffles? If I am wrong, a garnish is totally unnecessary for this dish. The chicken was moist. There are spices in the flour breading I can see but hard to taste what it is. The waffle is a hard pass for me. The waffle was crispy which is good, but also thin and dry and I couldn't taste any sweetness until I put maple syrup on it. The syrup came out warm which was nice. It's clear watching the people at the bar this is a local hangout. The chicken and waffles were $19 which if I was in the bay I think it's about right, but I think a little high considering the level of food I got. Supposedly this place is packed specifically on Sundays. The server doesn't know why? I'm not interested to even try to come back for a second chance and just be told sold out of the menu.
