Hidden Bay Ridge gem. Delicious food, great selection of drinks, and a super friendly staff/owner. Never a bad meal, highly recommend!

Great authentic German food. Service and beer menu are exceptional. Must go if you are in the mood for anything German.

I spent some time in Germany earlier this years and was craving some German food. Craving satisfied...but I miss Germany!

Edwinbnyc@yahoo.com Food is simple and well-prepared, but the highlight is the incredible number of available beers. I always chose one of the on-tap beers; never disappointed. I highly recommend this place. My family and I have had a number of visits here. read more

The sausage sampler was delicious. All the sausages was very tasty. The pork shank and rolled beef was too dry. It seems like they left it on the oven too long and the sauces tasted the same. The salmon was ok. They need to hire more staff, there was only one waitress. I will just go back for the sausages read more

This is my second time eating food from here. The first time was a long time ago (def a few years) and I remember having the Sauerbraten with Spätzle which was alright. So today we ordered from here and ordered: -Käsespätzle -Hähnchenschnitzel - Side of Jäger gravy - Side of red cabbage - Kartoffelpuffer - Brezel (Sadly I forgot to take pictures) I am a german native so I would love to fix the menu mistakes when it comes to the spelling because it's driving me nuts. As much as i appreciate them wanting to make the menu authentic - please have someone check your spelling before using it officially. It simply adds to your authenticity. Also be consistent with it and don't switch to English halfway through the menu (at least on Seamless where we ordered). Service: The Service was excellent and the food actually came before the given time frame even started. It was quick and the food was warm! Food: I had the Käsespätzle which cost $15. I asked for warm bacon as an add on - which was missing. The Spätzle covered with cheese were really good, the flavor of the cheese was delicious! The Spätzle that had nothing on them tasted watery. The whole dish had way too many onions underneath it which weren't that great either. Still enjoyable but not great tasting. Also compared to the Schnitzel for $16 the amount of Spätzle was really not a lot. The Schnitzel which my husband ordered was good. Good texture, flavor and amount of food! The Jäger gravy oder Jägersoße as I would say in German was good. Only the texture was more liquidy than expected. The red cabbage was definitely better than the last time we ate at "Zum Stammtisch" another German restaurant. It was a good texture and flavor. The Kartoffelpuffer (potato pancakes) were delicious- especially with the apple sauce it came with! Mmmh ! My favorite of the order! The Brezel was also super delicious and a perfect size! I definitely don't think that this place has the best German food but it's good enough for being close to it and you have a hankering for German Cuisine. Three stars for this place. I haven't found a German restaurant that i would give five stars yet. And "Zum Stammtisch" (which I would give four stars) has better food than this place so it gets the next best thing. read more

This place offered some of the best hospitality I've felt in awhile. We came in last week for my friend's birthday and the staff here was making sure everything was going well with us. Upon arrival they helped me figure out what I wanted out of a very wide selection of beers. I let them know exactly what I was looking for. My beer was cold, frothy, and delicious. As more friends arrived we began to order some appetizers. We had wurst samples, potato salad, escargot, and pretzels. All were delicious. During this time the staff came around and made sure my glass was filled with whatever I was in the mood for next. For mains, I had some of the best pork schnitzel I've ever had. Top of the line. The only thing that was a little disappointing was the spatzle. Not as good as some of the I've had in my life. Still the was only one minor issue in an over fabulous experience. Thank you everyone at the Schnitzel House. We had an amazing time. We'll be back. read more

One cloudy day.. A bunch of us headed over to explore this famous German house situated in deep Brooklyn. I expected to have some gigantic Viking or Teotonic action packed experience but, the place was simple and rather cozier than imagined. However, do not be fooled by the looks. Everything served here comes in super duper size. Beginning with draft beer, yes, it is doubled and wait for what I say about the entrees. We shared an appetizer, sausage sample platter and it was EXCELLENT. If you like sausages, this could serve you as a meal. Our german friend tried to explain a lot for everything but, I can't even remember 1/8 of what she said now. So I am not gonna spell the name of the dishes in German.. Menu comes with english subtitles and descriptions. so...... Yay? Anyways, I had Pork shank with Bavarian beer gravy, expecting dark and grill/burnt patched Bavarian Shank but it was like chuck of unsmoked brisket and too soft and blend for my taste. I needed salt. My friend had Fanners Feast, this is what you should get if you are a meat eater. Darn so good. Roasted and smoked!!! with such a dark and yummy gravy. I have envied and fancied her plate all throughout our entire meal. As a side choice, you get this called Spaetzle - it looks like traditional german home made egg+butter noodles. and it exactly does taste like it. Major topics in vegetarian menus... tho, I wasn't a fan. Some people had salmons, It was A OK. Yet, the last but the best(?) and most shocking dishes of all was what our healthy Peter ordered. Butchers Plate.. It is assortment of smoked and unsmoked sausages. When it came out.. there was an instant silence of Schnitzel Haus.. Ho-Hoy-Holly Cow.... " the Butcher must have been very generious." The meal is enormous in every possible way and unhandleable. And possibly could be offensive. I might provide some photos soon. He could not finish even 1/3 and took the rest home. So, pack your back with hungry stomach to Brooklyn, expecting to bring back a huge piggy bag around your full beer belly. read more

Wurst sampler was so awesome. The pork shank was so juicy and flavorful. The potion of it was huge piece of meat cause we ordered the large for 2. What was on our mind? The sauage sampler was good but if u order the wurst sampler was better. We love the potatoe salad. Our desert was the apple strudel which was my husband's choice and he loved it. It wasnt overly sweet and on the side of a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream which we both loved. Staffs were so helpful and friendly made our night so enjoyable. Will definitely go back to try their other delish dishes. We already know what to order the next time we go. Lol. read more

Updated from my previous review from giving 1 star now to 4 stars. Due to the Owner of the restaurant contacted me in regarding the this incident. This Owner has a great customer care and willing to listen how this issue established. He resolved the issue by sending me back the extra 20% tip we left and extra couple dollars. I was not expecting to get this money back as I already walkout to this restaurant and I didn't add up all the math before paying. Hopefully, after this, the waiter should always kindly let customer knows if service charge is included. But even with 4 people dining, this service charge/tip should never be added on to the check. I am not a person who like to give people a hard time. The owner did cool me off and care about customers. Understanding the situation and improve for better. Thank you to the owners of the restaurant for taking the time to respond to my feedback and resolve the issues amicably. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BE AWARE before dining there. Make sure you CALCULATE your bill before you paid or walkout, else, you will be like me. See below for a full story. This restaurant is CASH ONLY alert us when we walk in. which is fine because thanks of yelp users' comment. So I came with prepared. I got an $80 food worth of coupon and came there yesterday for dinner with a party of four people. We order the following: Reibekuchen - (4 pcs) - $10 Schwaebische Kässpätzle - $14 Würst teller mit allem Drum und Dran - $25 Schweinshaxe "Hofbraeuhaus" (Large) - $27 Chefs Steak - $34 Deutscher Schokoladen kuchen - $6 All the food are great except for the Schweinshaxe "Hofbraeuhaus" where the skin is unable to bite apart. Service was very good as the waiter auto-mode refill our water. However, this is the part I was super disappointed and mad, which I didn't realize until the next morning. So on the receipt, they wrote the final amount in pen which I still need to pay $70 after the coupon. The computer printed on the receipt saying suggested tip 20% is $23. Which I was planning to pay 20% of being good service. The $70 is included the 20% tip, (These hidden tip amount is the sum of Food + Tax) in which, at the time, I didn't realize they included it as the they were written the final amount in pen and I didn't calculate them and they didn't tell me the tip is already added on. So on top of their hidden 20% tip, I paid another 20% tip. Back in 2013, by law, restaurant in nyc is not allowed to auto add tip when there's a 6 parties of less and tip is based on sum of food before tax. Sadly, I didn't take a picture of the receipt or take the receipt, else I will take action to file a compliant at the NYC consumer department. I was thinking to come back again, now, with this scam they did, I will not come back anymore. I am sure there's other good German restaurant better than this one. I was about giving 5 stars for this place but after I realize all this hidden scam. Knock all the stars down. read more

This place is good enough that I used to trek out here from the East Village, when I still lived there. One time, planning to meet a bunch of friends, I didn't pay attention to what train I was getting on, and ended up in Coney Island. Got a car service so I could make it out for bier and schnitzels! I've visited Germany over a dozen times, so I can say with some certainty that the food here is authentic. More importantly, it's tasty! Nice, hearty portions, too. Excellent beer list, and I love the wood panels and copper-ceilinged dining room - it's a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. I hadn't been here for a while, because they'd gotten rid of their buffet night - but now, buffet is back! Yay! I'll be stuffing my face there soon! I just checked it out for lunch for the first time, and this might very well be the best deal in Bay Ridge. Most of the items on the lunch menu are $10 or under. It's a smaller portion than the dinner portions, but it's still enough to fill you up. We got the sauerbraten and a schnitzel, and both hit the spot. And - lunchtime beers are half price! I left all full and warm and glowing with happiness! I mean, alcohol. Oh, what's the difference!? read more

Dear Owner Alfred, In response to you refuting my statement about the beer expiration date, please do not insult my intelligence. It was not a production date, best by date or born on date, the bottle said "EXP 05/2018" when it was served to us in November. An expiration date is an expiration date. Is it poison to drink if it's expired? No. Does it lose it's quality and flavor? Yes. Does it make your restaurant look suspect to serve expired beers? Yes. Instead of trying to make a customer seem like they don't know what an expiration date is perhaps you should increase the quality of your food, beers and service. read more

Superior service and quality of food. One thing is for certain: I will be returning to this restaurant! The atmosphere has the basic feel of a traditional German bier hall, with a touch of old-fashioned elegance. The seating is spacious, the lighting dim, and it's very clean (including the restrooms). I could tell that a lot of the people coming in were regulars, but we still received the same amount of attention from the waitstaff, which made me feel valued as a customer. I believe that the gentleman we interacted with the most is the owner or manager, and he was great - joked around with us, answered all of our questions, made sure we were satisfied. The bacon dressing, which you can get on a house salad, was hands-down the best dressing I've ever had on a salad. It's zesty, with bits of smokey-tasting bacon in it. I had the smoked bratwurst with mashed potatoes, and the cold potato salad. I can't say enough good about them. The mashed potatoes are buttery and smooth, with small chunks in them. The brats were juicy and cooked to perfection. They also came with a variety of mustards ranging from sweet to spicy; my favorite was the spicy horseradish variety! My boyfriend had an entree containing a variety of 3 schnitzels, and he raved about it. The menu has endless options! They have an extensive beer selection. Their wine list is limited, but contained a satisfactory Chardonnay. The prices are unbeatable, and the portions are generous! Even if Bay Ridge is a bit far for your traveling preferences, I urge you to give this place a shot! read more

I ordered from here for the first time and was super excited since I typically love a good schnitzel. I unfortunately was very very disappointed. The chicken schnitzel was thick and rubbery with absolutely no taste. And then there was the spaetzel which tasted like plain boiled pasta. It was strange I'm not sure if this is their usual but there was no seasoning on anything!! The one thing I did enjoy was the potato pancakes which is why I gave two stars. This place is not cheap and yet provides food with 0 flavor or texture. Unfortunately right now I'm cooking a meal since I'm hungry because the food was that bad. I don't mean to sound harsh its just it put a major wrench in what was supposed to be a nice days night. read more

I've been here many times, and I cant believe I was negligent in reviewing it. I could have sworn I did. Probably forgot to hit the submit button or something. This place is just perfect. The service is extremely friendly and quick, though they never ever rush you out. The food is exquisite . I used to have the veal, but for personal reasons only, switched to the salmon. Both are as tasty as anything in Bay Ridge... Mashed potatoes, French fries, and spinach are equally tasty. Prices are reasonable, maybe even on the inexpensive side considering the rise in prices of restaurants the last couple of years There's an upstairs which hosts local rock bands on weekends. It has the loft atmosphere of the 60s and 70s that is impossible to find anymore. You young people need to experience it to know what I mean. (The only thing missing is a room full of smoke from cigarettes and what have you LOL). The only cautionary tale I have to tell us that there have been 2 periods where they didn't take credit cards. Maybe best to call ahead. Right now they do take credit cards, and hopefully will continue to. read more

My husband and I wanted to try this place since we just got back from Oktoberfest in Germany. I ordered the chicken schnitzel with spaetzl and house salad. The spaetzl and dressing for house salad were delicious. I was disappointed in chicken schnitzel, it was not authentic schnitzel. In Germany, the schnitzel had a lemony taste at first bite, very thin, not crunchy. The schnitzel seemed like a regular chicken cutlet. No comparison, sorry. My husband ordered the knockwurst with mash potatoes and saurkraut, the food was okay but came out room temperature, not HOT. His mash potatoes were cold in the center which led us to believe it must've been microwaved. read more

Really nice, family run business. I haven't tried too much of the dinner menu, my go to meals are the Paprika Chicken and the chicken in wine sauce with mushrooms ( I love chicken lol) There's also a rotating Bier menu that changes seasonally in addition to a fully stocked bar. Tommy the bartender is amazing (ask for the German Alpine Flower while it's still available) The wait staff have always been very friendly and accommodating. usually on weekends they are slammed so please be patient if your order takes a little bit longer it's worth it! The only reason I took off a star is because a lot of The food is very fattening and I understand that being a German restaurant. I only wish there was more low calorie food on the menu. And that's not really a complaint!! read more

Okay, so what was I to think as I approach a German establishment....of course being the only brown face in the place? I order a drink at the bar, waiting for the rest of my Meetup Karaoke (yes, for real) group. As I sit, a guy, who looks a little like Uncle Fester stares at me. My heart skips a beat a little, thinking of the skinheads I saw in East Germany a while ago. Then he speaks "You are so beautiful". Oh heeeeeey now! From there I had no worries. I came to Schnitzel Haus because I knew that they had live karaoke and my Meetup group decided to meet there. It was so much fun. They of course have beer. They also have crazy good food. Our organizer was late coming, but reserved tables for us and didn't mind us sitting and ordering. The waitstaff was really nice, as were the band that would be hosting the karaoke event. Everyone was happy with the insane amount of food that was on their plates, because I was so full, and full of music that by the end of the night I wanted to get wheeled out of there! Will go back soon the next time the Human Karaoke Experience play! read more

True Brooklyn staple! Excellent food, friendly staff, very inviting atmosphere. Definitely a place worth visiting when in Bay Ridge.

I'm not too big of a fan of German food as most things don't seem to have a taste. However checking this place out with a big group of friends I managed to try a lot of different things and my favorite dishes were the sausage (wild boar I believe, the red one) and my main salmon dish was very yummy. There's also something about their sweet brown mustard that's pretty awesome. The Hoegaarden from tap is also very yummy. The waitresses are also friendly and easy on the eyes. ;-) read more

We had a very nice time at the Schnitzel Haus. Bay Ridge was also a nice time. Was a cute little Brooklyn neighborhood with lots going on, and a perfect home base for our four days in and around the city. Sarah had the Knackwurst which was awesome and while I can't remember what the others of us had, I know we hold the Schnitzel Haus in high regard. It's the first time that I heard someone with a Brooklyn slash German accent. That was weird. One especially cool thing is... schnapps! If you like the traditional German, Hungarian, and Austrian schnapps, then you'll be happy here. Just ask for the stuff that grandma drinks and you'll be pointed in the right direction. Man... it's lunchtime right now and German food is sounding better than ever! read more

Once again we came for the buffet dinner on Wednesday night. I am so glad that the food were still as delicious as last time. The food that I love this time was the Shepherd's Pie and the Mussels and Penne with Creamy sauce. I just cant stop eating them, that's how good they were!!! The Shepherd's Pie they made is a little different than the normal one. Instead of the ground meat, they used sliced wursts in the bottom. They also put a layer of sauerkraut in between. The Mussels were perfect cooked, which means they were plum and juicy. Besides that, they also had roasted pork, Beef Gulasch with Noodles, Meatloaf, steam vegetable and German potato. I cant wait to come back again!!! read more

As a resident of the greater Ridgewood-Glendale region (not to mention a vegetarian), it is a bit comical that I visit Bay Ridge and end up in the area's only German restaurant rather than, say, a Middle Eastern joint or old Norwegian bakery. But we'd been walking all day, and good beer and hearty food called. The space was pleasant, the size of a typical commercial storefront, with a tin ceiling and wood paneling. A gentleman was playing an autoharp up front, the sole TV was muted, and the room was nearly full on a sunday evening. Free rolls and butter to start, and an extensive list of German and Belgian beers, with about 8 on tap. I got the Weihensephaner Korbinian (doppelbock) and my companion had the Spaten Optimator. Both were excellent, although in retrospect something lighter may have been called for to wash down the massive piles of food we ordered. Vegetarians and German food barely mix, but compared to, say, Zum Stammtisch, we did well; there were 3 vegetarian entrees, in addition to some appetizers. I had the Schwaebische Kaesspatzen (spaetzle with gouda and carmelized onions); it was a different take than the mac-n-cheesier version at Gottscheer Hall; a tinge of sourness. The portion was enormous; I had to take 1/3 of it home in a box, which is a rarity. The house salad served with it is completely skippable and boring. My companion got the vegetarian platter (spaetzle, beet salad, potato pancakes, broccoli, carrots) and was happy with it. If I lived in the area I'm sure I'd be back regularly, even if just to drink. I'll be eating this food tomorrow for lunch, in any case. read more

This place is three places in one. There is a super friendly bar scene with incredibly good German and Bavarian beer. During the weekdays the beers are half price from 4 to 7. It's also a great dinner place with everything from fried Camembert... which you absolutely have to try... all the way up to a monstrous pork loin. I think Thursdays is their prime rib night and one of my girlfriend's favorites. It's one of those places you like to say you never had a bad meal. The third iteration of this place is it happens to be a fun music venue. They have local bands as well as some interesting acts such as a guy who plays a zither! It's super relaxing on a Sunday afternoon. I'd recommend to call to see who is playing.... it ranges from soft acoustic to some loud rock. read more

The owners response to my original review just goes to show what kind of customer service you can expect if you have an issue here. We were actually there in August of 2016, not last May, so he must have me confused with someone else. I stand by my review - the owner/wife did in fact yell at us & accuse us of trying to scam them for "free food" when we sent two of our dishes back, and tried to charge us for said food we didn't even touch. The waiter was doing the best he could being the ONLY waiter on staff on a Friday night, and we never yelled or were rude to anyone. Certainly we were upset when the owner chose to behave towards us the way she did. No apologies for the slow service or inedible food, just a defensive attitude, disrespect and an attempt to overcharge us. So don't worry Alfred, I will keep spending my money elsewhere as there are SO MANY great restaurants in the neighborhood. read more

I came without knowing there would be a loud band playing live. It's not a huge place, and it was a busy night, so the only table left was right in front of the band. It was way too loud to hear anything! We ended up requesting a table that was blocked off in the back. After asking twice, they finally moved us to the back table. The german beer selection is great! So much to choose from, and they all come with matching labeled cups, so cute. The apps sound great, but fall a little flat. Just eat the bread instead. But the warm bacon dressing salad that came with my meal was yummy. The wiener schnitzel was surprisingly bland. The bratwurst sample platter was delicious. You probably won't be able to finish 5 large bratwurst and mashed potatoes, so just take it home. The saurkraut really made everything more tasty. read more

Ate here for lunch in August. My go to German spot is Nurnberger Bierhaus in Staten Island. This little spot is terrific so I couldn't wait to compare Schnitzel Haus to it. So, at Schnitzel Let's begin with the waiter who had such a wonderful and welcoming way about him. He was happy, friendly and made us feel special from the moment we walked in the door. The Haus is well appointed, with a warm and fun spirited feeling about the place. We ordered a vegetarian meal, a steak sandwich, and chicken. The food was good and the price was great. But the best part about the meal was the apple strudel, topped with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. Yummy! Will be eating here again. read more

My lady and myself visited the Schnitzel Haus yesterday in the early afternoon after reading the predominently excellent reviews, so our expectations were heightened. We were all set to be wowed by the exceptional, authentic German specialties but, as it turned out, we were underwhelmed with our experience. We started out with a salad each, which was ordinary, no complaints or cause for praise, and then moved on to the mussels which were particularly well-reviewed. The "saffron-garlic white wine broth" had a overwhelmingly butter taste which completely masked all other flavors and made it difficult to enjoy dipping the nice crusty bread pieces in thew sauce...oh well. My Jaeger schnitzel was smothered in a brown mushroom sauce that was unpleasant tasting and the schnitzel itself was overcooked and dried-out, so tough as to make it difficult to cut with a serrated steak knife. My partners schnitzel was equally unsatisfying...enough said. The apple struedal dessert item was just "ok" and suffered from a "gummy" outer crust, which detracted from the otherwise delicious filling. Considering the tab set us back $132 plus tip ($155 total...no cause to overtip) for lunch, we won't be returning...unfortunately...we really wanted to love this place and looked forward to becoming regulars. The fact is, we can get a far-superior Schnitzel at any number of places. Oh, lest I forget, the Bloody Mary was good and the German beer was also very good...if the schnitzel wasn't like shoe leather we would certainly come back. read more

What a fun place! Service is excellent and food was quite good. Started with a mushroom appetizer - sliced mushrooms in a cream sauce over pumpernickel - very good. For dinner I had the weiner schnitzel and my husband had a schnitzel with ham and cheese. Both were very good and portions were large. We went on a Friday night and they had a band starting at 9. Good music and not intrusive if you were eating but a good vibe for people just coming in late for drinks. I would go again and would recommend read more

The potato-leek soup with bacon sounded great on paper. The cream had separated from the broth perhaps. It just had an odd texture. The meat on the Sauerbraten was a bit dry and the sauce too sweet. Served with red cabbage also on the sweet side and dense bland potato dumplings. Best part for me was the bread and the beer. My friends had the Haehnchen Schnitzel and I sample it. The chicken cutlet was a bit dry but tasty. The house salad was not properly drained. The bacon dressing tasteless. The place has a nice atmosphere and the staff is of top grade. read more

For me living in West Germany for 7 years and working for a German company going back every couple of years for new products training, unfortunately the traditional German restaurants there are giving way to fast food like McDonalds, what a shame. But never the less I had the Goulasch and the Zegurrner schnitzel Fairly decent, wished spazel would been a side dish. Also the strudel. I always have Weiss beer at any German themed restaurant. All in all this place was decent and can say you will like it. read more

Went here recently with my wife for dinner. The food here is very hit or miss. The chicken schnitzel was really crispy and tender, really great! The mashed potatoes were lumpy and cold and were not good. The kielbasa sausage was yummy! The spaeztle I was really looking forward to was bland and soggy. So overall a very up and down experience in terms of food. The service was nice enough and the overall atmosphere was just ok. I would possibly order in from here but likely wouldn't come back in for dinner. The bathrooms were private and nice. read more
