One cloudy day.. A bunch of us headed over to explore this famous German house situated in deep Brooklyn. I expected to have some gigantic Viking or Teotonic action packed experience but, the place was simple and rather cozier than imagined. However, do not be fooled by the looks. Everything served here comes in super duper size. Beginning with draft beer, yes, it is doubled and wait for what I say about the entrees. We shared an appetizer, sausage sample platter and it was EXCELLENT. If you like sausages, this could serve you as a meal. Our german friend tried to explain a lot for everything but, I can't even remember 1/8 of what she said now. So I am not gonna spell the name of the dishes in German.. Menu comes with english subtitles and descriptions. so...... Yay? Anyways, I had Pork shank with Bavarian beer gravy, expecting dark and grill/burnt patched Bavarian Shank but it was like chuck of unsmoked brisket and too soft and blend for my taste. I needed salt. My friend had Fanners Feast, this is what you should get if you are a meat eater. Darn so good. Roasted and smoked!!! with such a dark and yummy gravy. I have envied and fancied her plate all throughout our entire meal. As a side choice, you get this called Spaetzle - it looks like traditional german home made egg+butter noodles. and it exactly does taste like it. Major topics in vegetarian menus... tho, I wasn't a fan. Some people had salmons, It was A OK. Yet, the last but the best(?) and most shocking dishes of all was what our healthy Peter ordered. Butchers Plate.. It is assortment of smoked and unsmoked sausages. When it came out.. there was an instant silence of Schnitzel Haus.. Ho-Hoy-Holly Cow.... My lady and myself visited the Schnitzel Haus yesterday in the early afternoon after reading the predominently excellent reviews, so our expectations were heightened. We were all set to be wowed by the exceptional, authentic German specialties but, as it turned out, we were underwhelmed with our experience. We started out with a salad each, which was ordinary, no complaints or cause for praise, and then moved on to the mussels which were particularly well-reviewed. The "saffron-garlic white wine broth" had a overwhelmingly butter taste which completely masked all other flavors and made it difficult to enjoy dipping the nice crusty bread pieces in thew sauce...oh well. My Jaeger schnitzel was smothered in a brown mushroom sauce that was unpleasant tasting and the schnitzel itself was overcooked and dried-out, so tough as to make it difficult to cut with a serrated steak knife. My partners schnitzel was equally unsatisfying...enough said. The apple struedal dessert item was just "ok" and suffered from a "gummy" outer crust, which detracted from the otherwise delicious filling. Considering the tab set us back $132 plus tip ($155 total...no cause to overtip) for lunch, we won't be returning...unfortunately...we really wanted to love this place and looked forward to becoming regulars. The fact is, we can get a far-superior Schnitzel at any number of places. Oh, lest I forget, the Bloody Mary was good and the German beer was also very good...if the schnitzel wasn't like shoe leather we would certainly come back. read more

The owners response to my original review just goes to show what kind of customer service you can expect if you have an issue here. We were actually there in August of 2016, not last May, so he must have me confused with someone else. I stand by my review - the owner/wife did in fact yell at us & accuse us of trying to scam them for "free food" when we sent two of our dishes back, and tried to charge us for said food we didn't even touch. The waiter was doing the best he could being the ONLY waiter on staff on a Friday night, and we never yelled or were rude to anyone. Certainly we were upset when the owner chose to behave towards us the way she did. No apologies for the slow service or inedible food, just a defensive attitude, disrespect and an attempt to overcharge us. So don't worry Alfred, I will keep spending my money elsewhere as there are SO MANY great restaurants in the neighborhood. read more

This place is three places in one. There is a super friendly bar scene with incredibly good German and Bavarian beer. During the weekdays the beers are half price from 4 to 7. It's also a great dinner place with everything from fried Camembert... which you absolutely have to try... all the way up to a monstrous pork loin. I think Thursdays is their prime rib night and one of my girlfriend's favorites. It's one of those places you like to say you never had a bad meal. The third iteration of this place is it happens to be a fun music venue. They have local bands as well as some interesting acts such as a guy who plays a zither! This place is good enough that I used to trek out here from the East Village, when I still lived there. One time, planning to meet a bunch of friends, I didn't pay attention to what train I was getting on, and ended up in Coney Island. Got a car service so I could make it out for bier and schnitzels! I've visited Germany over a dozen times, so I can say with some certainty that the food here is authentic. More importantly, it's tasty! Nice, hearty portions, too. Excellent beer list, and I love the wood panels and copper-ceilinged dining room - it's a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. I hadn't been here for a while, because they'd gotten rid of their buffet night - but now, buffet is back! Yay! I'll be stuffing my face there soon! I just checked it out for lunch for the first time, and this might very well be the best deal in Bay Ridge. Most of the items on the lunch menu are $10 or under. Superior service and quality of food. One thing is for certain: I will be returning to this restaurant! The atmosphere has the basic feel of a traditional German bier hall, with a touch of old-fashioned elegance. The seating is spacious, the lighting dim, and it's very clean (including the restrooms). I could tell that a lot of the people coming in were regulars, but we still received the same amount of attention from the waitstaff, which made me feel valued as a customer. I believe that the gentleman we interacted with the most is the owner or manager, and he was great - joked around with us, answered all of our questions, made sure we were satisfied. The bacon dressing, which you can get on a house salad, was hands-down the best dressing I've ever had on a salad. It's zesty, with bits of smokey-tasting bacon in it. I had the smoked bratwurst with mashed potatoes, and the cold potato salad. I can't say enough good about them. The mashed potatoes are buttery and smooth, with small chunks in them. The brats were juicy and cooked to perfection. They also came with a variety of mustards ranging from sweet to spicy; my favorite was the spicy horseradish variety! My boyfriend had an entree containing a variety of 3 schnitzels, and he raved about it. The menu has endless options! They have an extensive beer selection. Their wine list is limited, but contained a satisfactory Chardonnay. The prices are unbeatable, and the portions are generous! Ate here for lunch in August. My go to German spot is Nurnberger Bierhaus in Staten Island. This little spot is terrific so I couldn't wait to compare Schnitzel Haus to it. So, at Schnitzel Let's begin with the waiter who had such a wonderful and welcoming way about him. He was happy, friendly and made us feel special from the moment we walked in the door. The Haus is well appointed, with a warm and fun spirited feeling about the place. We ordered a vegetarian meal, a steak sandwich, and chicken. The food was good and the price was great. Okay, so what was I to think as I approach a German establishment....of course being the only brown face in the place? I order a drink at the bar, waiting for the rest of my Meetup Karaoke (yes, for real) group. As I sit, a guy, who looks a little like Uncle Fester stares at me. My heart skips a beat a little, thinking of the skinheads I saw in East Germany a while ago. Then he speaks "You are so beautiful". Oh heeeeeey now! From there I had no worries. I came to Schnitzel Haus because I knew that they had live karaoke and my Meetup group decided to meet there. It was so much fun. They of course have beer. They also have crazy good food. Our organizer was late coming, but reserved tables for us and didn't mind us sitting and ordering. The waitstaff was really nice, as were the band that would be hosting the karaoke event. Everyone was happy with the insane amount of food that was on their plates, because I was so full, and full of music that by the end of the night I wanted to get wheeled out of there! I'm not too big of a fan of German food as most things don't seem to have a taste. However checking this place out with a big group of friends I managed to try a lot of different things and my favorite dishes were the sausage (wild boar I believe, the red one) and my main salmon dish was very yummy. There's also something about their sweet brown mustard that's pretty awesome. The Hoegaarden from tap is also very yummy. The waitresses are also friendly and easy on the eyes. ;-) read more

We had a very nice time at the Schnitzel Haus. Bay Ridge was also a nice time. Was a cute little Brooklyn neighborhood with lots going on, and a perfect home base for our four days in and around the city. Sarah had the Knackwurst which was awesome and while I can't remember what the others of us had, I know we hold the Schnitzel Haus in high regard. It's the first time that I heard someone with a Brooklyn slash German accent. That was weird. One especially cool thing is... schnapps! If you like the traditional German, Hungarian, and Austrian schnapps, then you'll be happy here. Just ask for the stuff that grandma drinks and you'll be pointed in the right direction. Once again we came for the buffet dinner on Wednesday night. I am so glad that the food were still as delicious as last time. The food that I love this time was the Shepherd's Pie and the Mussels and Penne with Creamy sauce. I just cant stop eating them, that's how good they were!!! The Shepherd's Pie they made is a little different than the normal one. Instead of the ground meat, they used sliced wursts in the bottom. They also put a layer of sauerkraut in between. The Mussels were perfect cooked, which means they were plum and juicy. Besides that, they also had roasted pork, Beef Gulasch with Noodles, Meatloaf, steam vegetable and German potato. As a resident of the greater Ridgewood-Glendale region (not to mention a vegetarian), it is a bit comical that I visit Bay Ridge and end up in the area's only German restaurant rather than, say, a Middle Eastern joint or old Norwegian bakery. But we'd been walking all day, and good beer and hearty food called. The space was pleasant, the size of a typical commercial storefront, with a tin ceiling and wood paneling. A gentleman was playing an autoharp up front, the sole TV was muted, and the room was nearly full on a sunday evening. Free rolls and butter to start, and an extensive list of German and Belgian beers, with about 8 on tap. I got the Weihensephaner Korbinian (doppelbock) and my companion had the Spaten Optimator. Both were excellent, although in retrospect something lighter may have been called for to wash down the massive piles of food we ordered. Vegetarians and German food barely mix, but compared to, say, Zum Stammtisch, we did well; there were 3 vegetarian entrees, in addition to some appetizers. I had the Schwaebische Kaesspatzen (spaetzle with gouda and carmelized onions); it was a different take than the mac-n-cheesier version at Gottscheer Hall; a tinge of sourness. The portion was enormous; I had to take 1/3 of it home in a box, which is a rarity. The house salad served with it is completely skippable and boring. My companion got the vegetarian platter (spaetzle, beet salad, potato pancakes, broccoli, carrots) and was happy with it. If I lived in the area I'm sure I'd be back regularly, even if just to drink. I'll be eating this food tomorrow for lunch, in any case. read more

I came without knowing there would be a loud band playing live. It's not a huge place, and it was a busy night, so the only table left was right in front of the band. It was way too loud to hear anything! We ended up requesting a table that was blocked off in the back. After asking twice, they finally moved us to the back table. The german beer selection is great! So much to choose from, and they all come with matching labeled cups, so cute. The apps sound great, but fall a little flat. Just eat the bread instead. My husband and I went there on Aug to celebrate our 32 anniversary on Aug 5 2022 we have been going there for a few years and as usual the place never disappoints . The vibe is here us very down to earth . The owner always greeets you warmly. It's like cheers the place where everyone knows you name my husband and I ordered an app that was 6 mini dumplings stuffed with cheese fried in onions. We lucked the plate clean. The dark beers we ordered were as smooth as silk I ordered porked topped with Gouda cheese and black forest game. It was delicious portions are huge. Come hungry. My husband ordered pork topped with sauerkraut he could not finish it. It was delish we both got black forest cake for dessert. While my family & friends were watching our daughters basketball game (Coast Guard vs Merchant Marine Academy) in Kings Point I get a phone call at 12:00 that Schnitzel had to cancel my reservation because it was "double booked" per Amber. I said I have 20 people sitting in stands (attendees from 3 states) and where am I gonna get a 20 Seat reservation this late on the same day. Amber tells me "Good Luck"! Went here recently with my wife for dinner. The food here is very hit or miss. The chicken schnitzel was really crispy and tender, really great! The mashed potatoes were lumpy and cold and were not good. The kielbasa sausage was yummy! The spaeztle I was really looking forward to was bland and soggy. So overall a very up and down experience in terms of food. The service was nice enough and the overall atmosphere was just ok. I absolutely love this place. My first time eating there I tried the schnitzel with Black Forest ham and Gouda. Absolutely amazing. Since then I've tried the wings (also amazing and the Buffalo sauce is unlike anything you buy from the store.) I don't like hot dogs really but these ones are entirely made in house. No processed taste, not overly salty like most hot dogs. The German shepherds pie is damn good. The warm German potato salad is extremely unique and got rave reviews from an extremely hard to please family member of mine. Serendipitously came across the restaurant while making a courier delivery in the neighborhood. Had an absolutely lovely Friday evening dinner utilizing their outdoor seating. Authentic German dishes, and a great assortment of German beers. They had the Hofbräu haus Maibock which is one of my personal favorites. The neighborhood vibe was great, and they had a duo providing music. Wait staff was appropriately attentive and cheerful. Was able to park on an adjacent side street without issue.
