I'm old enough to remember eating at the terrific German restaurants that once made Yorkville home. And sadly, while most of these classic Manhattan eateries are long gone, the spirit, flavor, and old-fashioned Gemütlichkeit that made them memorable lives on at Brooklyn's Schnitzel Haus. I'm a meat-eater and sausage lover so the fare here is right up my alley, but fear not, vegetarians: the red cabbage, sauerkraut, and other non-meat fare is hearty and delicious as well. And, oh yes - the beer... not to be hyperbolic, but where else in Brooklyn (or for that matter, where else in NYC) can you get Dinkel Acker and Radeberger Export on tap? In HUGE chilled mugs? I've eaten here, I'd say, five times in the past couple of years, and I've always had a great time. The people who work here are very friendly, service is fast and efficient (but never nosy), atmosphere homey and welcoming. And now there are now regular music events, which is a major treat in a world in which canned music has the upper hand. The Schnitzel Haus is cash only (but there are plenty of ATMs on 5th Avenue if for some reason you forget to bring the green stuff). Surprisingly good, and some serious variation in the menu. As others have said, good beer, pretty good selection and good prices. My recommendation is to stick with the specials page. The meats off the regular menu, while generally delicious and in huge portions, tend to be dryer than the awesome specials. But if you had your heart set on schnitzel, or something else typical you certainly won't be disappointed. Personally I like to try something crazy I've never heard of whenever I come in, and I'm always very impressed. Went here with my mother and great-aunt, who had a bad experience years ago and was finally persuaded to try it again. The atmosphere is very cozy, wood-paneled walls and a gorgeous bar. However, we weren't impressed that they don't accept credit cards - I assume that's a temporary situation, but we didn't get any information on it other than a sign in the front that we were lucky we caught before we walked in. My mother had the Frankfurter Teller, my aunt had the Schnitzel Haus Steak, and I had the Schaefer-Auflauf (German Shepherd's Pie). I can't speak for the others' food but mine was delicious, and was in MASSIVE amounts; all of us took home about half of our meal and none of us are light eaters. The steak was cooked exactly medium-rare and the pie had a nice crust on it. We were so stuffed that we couldn't even think about dessert, but we were very impressed with the food. Slightly below average compared to other German restaurants I've been to, including IN Germany. Sauerbraten seemed to have been marinated for 5 minutes lacked flavor and seemed to be lacking in key ingredients., it was served with a pale and modest gravy with no kick. Beware also of the ''warm bacon dressing'', which seemed to be bacon drippings poured over iceberg lettuce, a few radishes and sliced tomatoes. The red cabbage was good however. This is the best German restaurant I have ever been to! My favorite dishes are the peperika snitzel and the spatzel with melted guda cheese and carmelized onions. I have never seen the spatzel dish any where else. The chef is VERY creative. For desert, he even makes his own vanilla sauce. You can put this vanilla sauce on ice cream or cake. It is DELICIOUS! The portions are large and the meat dishes are cooked to perfection. The bar is amazing. They offer traditional german beers and other drinks. The atmosphere is great too. It has antique prints of germany on the walls. Sometimes they have music. For instance, during the first sunday of every month, a man with a zither comes to play traditional german music. It is very family friendly and is also great for going out with friends or on dates. On Saturday nights, be sure to make a reservation b/c it can be crowded. Overall, it is DEFINITELY WORTH THE TRIP TO BAY RIDGE. IT IS THE BEST GERMAN FOOD YOU CAN GET IN THE CITY. My German family has been begging me to take them here for years!! Last night I finally caved and we went. When we got there at 7:30 the place was empty but in a matter of minutes it completely full! Definitely a very popular bay ridge spot. I am glad we got there early because we were a large party of seven. I had the schnitzel sampler with pork, veal, and chicken and it was fantastic, I also had potato pancakes, but they were a bit greasy and in need of salt. The French fries were amazing as well. Overall all seven of us enjoyed our dinner and beer. read more

The Schnitzel Haus produces very rich German food served up in generous portions, but I never got the "greasy spoon" vibe. I went there as part of a party of four on a Friday night - it was not too crowded and the service was prompt. Ironically, I'm not a big schnitzel fan, so I can't speak for the quality of their namesake dish. I enjoyed a huge pork roast and my wife had the knackwurst, with a side order of spaetzle. All very good - no complaints. Our friends had the farmers plate, which is a huge feast of various cuts of pork: all smokey-salty good. We washed it all down with a few choice Spatens and left quite satisfied. Will definitely come back some time. And while Schnitzel Haus is not haute cuisine or diet food, it's simply old school German food done right. In short: the Schnitzel Haus is really something Spaetzle! read more

The waitstaff was good and the food was served on time, but the portions were overpriced and I don't think they make anything from scratch, except for the warm potato salad. Having been to/spent time in Germany, I was expecting something more flavorful and hearty and homemade, but the most flavorful thing was the beer. Pretty sure the sauces with my wursts were Gulden, Grey Poupon, and something else. To pay around $16 for something I could've made at home for maybe $7, that was disappointing. For me to come back, I'd want the cooks to make everything from scratch. Wonderful waitstaff, though. I guess that's half the battle. read more

We are on vacation visiting family in Brooklyn and on our last night here we decided to eat at the Schnitzelhaus. The website and the sign on the door clearly said open at 4pm. The woman in the establishment didn't acknowledge us standing at the door at first but when she figured that we weren't going to go away she decided to open it. She then told us that they were not open and wouldn't be for maybe an hour or so (no actual time). A sign on the door would have been nice or at least no attitude. Never again. read more

I recently had dinner here and I have to say the food was ehhhhhh. Only thing that was tasty was the bratwurst, the warm German potato salad was very bland. I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to German food, aside from the occasional wurst or potato pancake. I wasn't entirely sure what to expect when I came here but I ended up loving it! The potato pancakes were just a tad burnt but otherwise tasted fine. The wurst appetizer that came with potato salad was also very delicious. My favorite dish, however, was the jaeger schnitzel. The mushroom gravy is to die for! I didn't expect to get such a huge portion and I ended up having leftovers to take home. This is one of the best restaurants in Bay Ridge. Huge portions of well prepared food. I had the Farmer's Feast which I feasted on for days! Since we are stuck at home we had them deliver our Easter dinner of roast leg of lamb and got a friendly, prompt delivery of our holiday meal. I've been to Germany over a dozen times and I can say the food here is really good and authentic. They also have a good German beer selection. Prices are also around average. The Leberkase in the attached photo was fifteen bucks and the portion was so big I couldn't finish it. They also have hot pretzels but they are smaller in size, not the giant Bavarian one's and they definitely don't taste like authentic Bavarian pretzels but they're still good and under three bucks. I can't say for sure but I think only the owners speak German as the staff don't appear to. The decor could also use a small bit of improvement but for the space I guess it just wouldn't make sense to have German Hall style wooden tables. Overall I recommend this place for a good German meal here in Brooklyn. read more

Maybe I'm missing something but as a foodie this place did not impress. The beer was yummy, but it's not like the restaurant actually brews their own beer. The bread was good. The service was great and the atmosphere & other patrons were warm and friendly. I really did want to like this place however, the food was pretty awful. If rating on the food alone, it would be 1 star. The beer, serive & atmosphere give it an extra star. I ordered the potato leek soup and the paprika chicken. The soup was good, not great but good. I appreciated the fact that there were real chucks of potato in it and you can see and taste the leeks, it wasn't over pureed. The chicken however came in a day-glo orange sauce, which tasted like it had some heavy sprinkles of Tabasco sauce (this is supposed to be German not Mexican right?). The spaetzle, one of the basic staples of German cuisine, was like soggy, short-cut, bland spaghetti. It was not edible at all. I took two bites, packed it up and threw it away. BF had the pretzel and bratwurst. The pretzel was just like the ones you get at a hot dog cart, which is fine but for those who have had a REAL Bavarian pretzel, it was a bit disappointing. In their defense, the menu said pretzel, not Bavarian pretzel, but when in a German restaurant, you expect Bavarian right? The bratwurst was OK. Not great, but just OK. At least it was edible. The mustards served with it were good. Maybe it was an off night but there wasn't enough there for me to warrant giving it a second try. That spaetzle was completely unforgivable. Sorry. read more

Instead of messaging me to try and belittle me into upping your reviews, you would do better to get your act together at your restaurant. I love how you insinuate I never attended college... Then go on to tell me instant mashed potatoes are 'fresh'. What culinary school told you powdered and reconstituted is the same as fresh? Whatever time you dedicate to attempting to bully your way to better reviews, please invest it in learning what a fresh potato is. By the way, no bar should refuse to serve beer in glassware unless specified. Beer, my dear German friend, is to be served in a big boy cup made of glass. I can not believe someone actually had to tell you that. The food was subpar, the glassware was nonexistent, and after firsthand reading the messages the owner (Alfred U) has sent to me and others, I'm not surprised. The owner is the tackiest aspect of the place. His utter lack of customer service smells worse than the Raid permeating his restaurant, and leaves a worse taste in your mouth than the nasty chicken sauce. read more

What I said was that I politely ASKED the wait staff if the voucher should be deducted first and then taxed as it didn't make sense to me to be taxed on the full bill amount for which we did not actually pay. When I called the online voucher co. they stated that while it is up to the discretion of the business owner, good practice would be to in fact apply the voucher first and then tax the customer on the actual food bill. The point however being that restaurant staff were unaware of these policies when we were there and had to be placed on hold while you called them to find out. Im happy to see that you are now researching the policies to avoid these problems in the future. Please inform your staff so they too know when presented with a voucher. Additionally, please teach them to accept questions from customers with polite patience versus the irate response we got. Also, more importantly and far more disturbing to me is this accusation that you just implied about me! Sir, with all due respect, get over yourself. I have no vested interest in devising a whole false scenario based on my eating experience at your restaurant as if I have nothing better to do. I used this site to report on my experience, as is the purpose of yelp, being that ours was so disappointing. Your made up story about company records re: my call and what I told the representative are 100% false and a pathetic attempt to escape the real problem which was (and continues to be) how your staff and now you yourself treated us and approached this whole situation. I followed up on your claim and I was told that there was no employee by the name you provided in your private message to me. I took the inquiry up to the top out of sheer curiosity but still, no one was able to identify this manager who supposedly made these claims to you. I have my email records of all the exchanges between myself and the company's representative and that is all the proof I need. Dear Sir, I appreciate your earlier admission of the restaurant having handled the situation poorly. I agree, they did and it should be rectified for future patrons. You should also take this opportunity to reflect on the example you set for your employees here on a public forum. Making false claims about a patron who is reporting a negative experience about your restaurant is pretty low and not helpful for either the reputation of your business nor the way in which your employees will treat customers in the future. the Schnitzel Haus is probably still the best Teutonic manifestation in the tri-state area that I've seen. here's my update: not too long ago, I brought a large group of friends and we got the private room upstairs (I made sure to call ahead of time). they let us connect our own mp3 player to the sound system, and the smaller bar upstairs was opened just for us. you'd think that 20+ plates (some shared appetizer dishes) would take forever, but they were surprisingly quick to come out. so far as food - it's all delicious. I highly recommend the "farmer's feast" plate. let's run down the four forms of meat that this entails: - double-smoked bacon (the thick kind!) - roast pork - smoked pork chop - bratwurst BUT THAT'S NOT ALL - WAIT, THERE'S MORE (oh Billy Mays, we miss you): - mashed potatoes - sauerkraut - red cabbage the farmer's feast will run you an astonishingly fair price of $18. Not bad, but as the rating may suggest, I've experienced better. I ordered a chicken schnitzel with warm mashed potatoes. Having lived in Germany, due to my military service, it would be unfair to draw comparisons but the food was hardly authentic. The schnitzel resembled more like a veal cutlet and small in size. The ambiance provided some German artifacts, like giant bier steins, picture frames, and popular soccer pennants. But nothing else. The service was below average, don't expect warm bread on the house. A glance to the kitchen, I notice that the people cooking my food were actually not German, but Spanish, probably Mexican. I'm Spanish-American myself and don't mind it, but when you claim to be the only authentic German restaurant in Brooklyn, the word Authentic is a misrepresentation. Cash Only. Tip is 18%. What a place! I went here with a couple of friends before a night on the town, and we had a GREAT time. We had the potato-leek soup, which was excellent! Then my friends ordered a fried pork chop type dish -- with a jäeger sauce -- excellent! I had the pork shank -- cooked to perfection; the meat fell right off the bone -- excellent! We ordered the strudel and a pretzel for desert -- equally excellent. Our servers for the night, Remington and Nayasia, were excellent; attentive and easy going; just a friendly face in this fast paced world -- and they recommended a delicious beer to go with my shank. They don't accept cards so plan ahead. Go to the Rite Aid and get gum and use your card as debit so you won't get charged a bank fee if your bank is not one of the 5 surrounding Schnitzel Haus. The gum will come in handy on the way home when your breath smells so bad from all that beer that even the smelly bums wouldn't want to sit next to you on the train. With that being said, happy hour is Monday thru Friday 4-7pm. $4 German beer in America? Oh hell ya ! The buffet was good. This place was true to its roots because they don't cater to vegetarians, or worse yet, vegans!! They had one salad and the rest was meat, meat, meat! Oh but there was the sweet potatoes which were ok. The German meatballs with beer cheese was exceptionally filling. I do not understand how this place has 4 stars--it is soooo mediocre, at best. And for the price is even worse. I LOVE German food and was very disappointed in the quality of food here. My husband ordered the schnitzel sampler. One of the three cutlets of meat was so tough we couldn't chew it and had to swallow whole or spit out. The spaetzle, a German dish I love, was so dry and not served with any kind of sauce or butter, etc. Imagine getting a bowl of cooked but dry pasta. We tried the bacon vinegrette that reviews raved about. It was weird. Like warmed, slightly liquified fat. Not sure what to make of it. And yes it's true, they don't take credit card. Which is fine if you planned ahead and brought cash. But it just seems for as expensive as this place is and the fact that it's 2015 that they'd take credit card. Finally a decent German restaurant in bay ridge. The food here is very good. From the schnitzels to the wurst tasty and well prepared. The beer menu is a nice refreshing selection as well. I often see employees from other bars in here to get a decent pine or bottle. The service however gets a 2 out of 10 in my opinion tho. If you aren't in a rush and want some good German food then definitely hit this place up. If you or one of your fellow patrons are impatient then go somewhere else.
