This is a very cool, old time bar that is basically hidden, I didn't even see it when I drove by. My main complaint is that they seem to close whenever they want. The posted hours were till midnight but I stopped in a bit after 11 and was told they were closing early. She made it seem like she was doing me a favor to serve me a beer. This place is now called simply "DB" according to the sign outside. If you're looking for an outstanding selection of beer, DB will become your second home. They take their beer seriously, so don't think about asking for a Bud Light or anything similar. You might get a death stare from the staff. The food is exactly what you'd want with a good beer. Just don't expect anything fancy - this isn't that place. The service? Old school no-nonsense. It's not white glove treatment but it's genuine and fitting the atmosphere. Shortcomings What I liked: Spicy burger was pretty basic, BUT the beef patty was cooked medium/medium rare nicely and it actually had a nice spiciness to it! Do not consume if you cannot eat spicy. Those that can, it wasn't too overwhelming, nice balance :) Two thumbs down for the wayyyyy undercooked side chips. Remember when Homer on the Simpsons greases a burger bun on all the surfaces and everything becomes see-through? Well, my chips were half soggy with oil, with NO crisp, and you could see your finger through the oil like a window. They've got an insane selection of beer with most of it served in trademark glasses! Service is pretty fast. It's a Russian establishment, pretending to be a German Biergarten. The prices are way too high for Midwood. Food has a Russian spin, for example instead of authentic sauerkraut, sausages come with Russian store-bought equivalent (the one with carrots mixed in). Decent beer selection. The outside seating area is actually kind of nice, so I'm glad that I was forced to go out there I guess. There are only men out here and most of them have Russian accents, whether they are speaking in Russian or in English. The guys speaking in English with Russian-tinged accents are telling one guy he should just kill himself. I think it's a joke though. I can't even tell. But somehow they sound really sexy saying it. (Some people think a French accent is hot, but for me, I just really like Eastern European accents, it's my thing). So, I'll listen to sexy Russian accents telling each other to kill themselves and argue over who knows what (because the arguing is in a Russian and I don't know much of the language) because really, it's been a terrible night for me, so what else am I going to do anyway at this point of the night, I'm ready to go home and write or cry or something already. But until I do, this place will do. It's clean, it has a nice set-up, and its super close to me, so those are all reasons worth maybe giving it another try on a better day for me. Draft Barn is the only decent bar in this neighborhood. The first time I walked in here years ago, I thought I discovered a beer hall that just opened because I was the only patron there. I didn't. That's just how it usually is. Mostly empty with occasional groups of 4+ people showing up. Don't be deceived by appearances. It looks closed from the outside, with pulled shades, in the middle of a block with shops that closed up for the night hours earlier. It might even look like a storefront for the Russian mob, maybe it is who knows, but the beer here is GOOD. They have a huge selection of international premium beers and the bartender is super knowledgeable. Just tell him what you're in the mood for (i.e. wheat beer, German, light) and he'll come up with a couple of suggestions. Try them all. Just don't get drunk enough to order the $200+ bottle of beer. They have a few of those on the menu. There's a food menu too. Sausages, burgers, fries and other heavy foods. The bar is good for groups. The bartender doesn't care if you sit there for hours, but he'll probably want your opinion on the beer. Oh and my favorite thing: the European music channel. A lot of times the TV is tuned to this ETV channel which plays risque music videos to all the techno hits you didn't know had music videos. It's awesome. read more

If you ever go to Draft Barn on Ave X watch out for a waiter named Yuriy. the guy is completely brainless. did not let my wife have a cup of tea from outside. My friends and I spent three hours there watching a hockey game having beer and food. My pregnant wife (as much as she loves beer, could not have any) wanted a cup of tea or coffee and since they do not serve either I walked across the street and bought her a cup. Well, not only did he not allow her to drink it and made her step outside, but he was also extremely rude about it sort of acting with bouncer in a night club kind of attitude. Draft Barn is a regular happy hour spot for my coworkers and myself. We are teachers and, because we get out of work at 3pm, I can't really comment on this place's night atmosphere. We usually use it as a starting point; we head over right after the final bell and leave by 7 or 8 at night (either to go home or to go somewhere else). Draft Barn is a great place to catch up with friends because it isn't super busy or obnoxiously loud. The bartenders remember you and your drink of choice, which I really like. It makes me feel very at home. They are also very attentive without being overbearing; they aren't completely up your ass and have perfect timing with drink refills. There are two inside seating areas; one directly next to the bar and one right next door. My favorite area is the outside section. It is the perfect place to unwind when the weather is nice. Lots of tables of various sizes and a wooden overhead so you aren't subject to the blazing sun. Once, I left my keys at Draft Barn. I didn't realize it until the next morning (I slept at a friend's house and therefore didn't need them to get into my apartment) and I looked up their phone number online. Just note that the number that shows up isn't for this location, but for the one in Bay Ridge. The guy who picked up the phone said they won't pick up the phone at Ave X (not sure why, exactly), so I went there when they opened. They had my keys! I was so happy, I almost jumped over the bar to hug the bartender (and immediately after, I went to the hardware store to have an extra set made... lesson learned about procrastination... sort of). Finally (I know I'm rambling, but I feel like it's really important to stress how great the bartenders are), I really like that they let me keep my bike in the back. I have a lock and can easily keep it on the sidewalk, but I still get anxiety if I go too long with my bike out of sight. They even let me keep it there when I left to go eat dinner down the street. They do have food, and I occasionally eat an appetizer (mozzarella sticks, etc.) but the entrees are just a little too ethnic for me. read more

To put this review in context, I visited this bar on a very busy Saturday night, when they were showing an MMA fight from Pay-per-view. We came in and saw a couple of tables empty, but as soon as we tried to sit down at one of them, the waiter told us the tables are reserved, even though there were no "reserved" signs on them. Clearly, he was holding them for his "VIP" clients. With no other option but to leave, we proceeded to just stand at the bar. Yes, stand, not sit, because there were no stools at the bar! I asked the waiter if they had a beer menu. He said, "yes", but never actually handed it to me. When I finally did get my hands on it, and tried to order a bottle from the large selection they had on the menu, it turned out they didn't have any of the 3 different ones I was considering. Instead, the waiter pointed me to another beer that they did have from a brewery I like. I was almost ready to order it, but then I looked at the price: $18. Almost every time we tried to order a round, we had to make multiple attempts because the bartender would first acknowledge the order, but then forget about it. The same thing was happening to other people standing at the bar. Granted, the beers we tried on tap were not bad. The night ended with a guy storming out of the bar, after hearing that his favorite fighter might be retiring. I thought a fight was breaking out because he was pushing everyone in his way, including a woman who almost fell to the floor. Avoid this bar. read more

I had such high hopes for you. your beer hall atmosphere inside, beer garden atmosphere outside, epic beer list, appealing menu of German and Eastern European food. all these sound like the perfect elements of a good night... ...BUT... after it took a while for my first beer to arrive, well, as Han Solo said, "I've got a bad feeling about this." one bartender, and one cook? come on! there were about 20 or so of us in our party, plus maybe about 15 other random patrons. it took 45 minutes for them to tell me that they did not have any of what I ordered (pork and rice) left. so I ordered schnitzel, and got it about 45 minutes after that. a friend of mine ordered a burger and got it about 2 hours later. the food was decent, and the beer list was great (and about on par with what you should expect from micros/imports), but the management really needs to hire more workers for efficiency. if they fix these staffing issues, I would definitely come back. maybe it was a slow/bad night (leave it to my friends to organize something big on a Thursday). also, it's right by the F train (about 3 blocks walk). read more

I'm striking out with my choices lately in regards to food it seems. While the Draft Barn offers a huge selection of beers to choose from, the ambiance is cold and the food was not good. I knew that we would probably be the only people here who don't speak Russian but that didn't phase me prior to going there. However, once seated there trying to drink my beer, surrounded by a huge staff literally standing right by us speaking Russian way too loudly who had no regard to our personal space, I was actually slightly offended. Like must you stand over me while I'm trying to eat my awfully prepared food? I ordered chicken schnitzel and the chicken wasn't pounded out at all, so it was super thick and had no flavor. The crispy coating the chicken was covered with fell off when cutting into it because there was no egg or flour coating the chicken. The mashed potatoes, although piping hot, also had no flavor and were lackluster. The sour kraut, which they told me was more like kapusta, & I was excited about, was actually cold cole slaw that again, had no flavor...at all. This meal was a complete waste of $15. I barely ate it and had to come home and make something. Lame. The only reason why I even gave it two stars was because the beer selection is impressive. Never again. read more

It's not every day that you get out to Coney Island and for me it probably happens once a year. Last October I happened to be in the neighborhood visiting a friend of mine, and we stopped into this spot for a brew. It seemed to be full of a lot of russians, and a friendly bunch they were. The beer selection was great, and the snacks were the usual bar fair. I give them four stars for the off-the-beaten-track factor, as this really felt like I was in a foreign land. I always thought to myself if i could only find a chill bar that had awesome beer and awesome food that was close to my house id be so happy... i am SO happy. I found out about this place a week ago and have been there 4/5 nights since. The beer selection is out of control and I think its awesome that they have unique glasses to match each kind of beer. not only that but the food is AWESOME. the first time i went was with a group of 6 guys and we ordered about 10 bowls of beer croutons, seriously could have been the best thing i ever ate in my life. (Im writing this review to vent about how much i love this place). Perfect for just having a drink with friends or going to watch the game (simply ask one of the bartenders to put on the game for you and they wont have a problem with it). i can see why people would think the staff is cold but i think thats just the eastern european culture. I find it funny that the neighborhood for this place is listed as Brighton Beach, Gravesend...I mean it's like there's a piece of Brighton Beach in Gravesend but the location stays in one place and that place is Gravesend. I've hit this place up a couple of times over the last few summers. My party ranged from just the two of us to an ever growing crowd of people. The food is palatable but nothing to rave about. It sops up the beer just fine. The selection of beer is what you come here for. Just be vary of the price tags on those beers, they climb pretty high on one or two options. The service is ok, the busier they get the less individual attention you get but that's understandable. Less understandable is the repeated number of times they've botched the tab, too high for all that we ordered. To be fair I never attempted to have the problems fixed, I just quietly leave off the extra amount from the tip monies. Which works out ok because by the next time I make it here they don't remember me, I don't remember them, no hard feelings. Go check it out. read more

I moved around the corner from this place a couple months ago and had been wanting to give it a try. Every time I walked passed it it looked so deserted I was discouraged. Finally a friend of mine forced me to go inside and I was pleasantly surprised. It was kind've deserted in the front room but there is a back room which was a little more lively. The waiter was super welcoming and knew a lot about beer. His suggestions were spot on to my taste and overall I was impressed by the selection of beer. The reason I am giving this place only 3 stars is because I wasn't a big fan of the wings. The are pretty tasteless and were still bloody inside. When I asked about it I was told that they were purposely made that way. I've never had wings that were so under cooked and had no idea that some people preferred them that way. They also had this bread crumb appetizer thing that I found disgusting. Overall, this place is a great place to come and drink but the food there sucks. read more

This is a pretty good neighborhood spot, especially if you are like my husband and I every time you've gone: not really in the mood to drive anyplace better or there is too much snow on the ground to make finding a spot anyplace an option. I would not go out of my way for the food, though the beer selection is the true draw. That said, go here and understand a few things: 1. Appetizers are all pre-made frozen stuff that is mediocre at best. Pass on the chicken wings and the fried calamari. Edible, but barely. 2. It is a German beer haus, so most of the beer is from Germany and Europe, with too few nods to U.S. craft beers (Delirium, Ommegang, etc.). They are overpriced by A LOT. A Delirium Tremmins should NOT be $12, especially for a neighborhood bar in the middle of Gravesend. 3. Food is pretty good--far from 5 star, but their fries are really good (slices of thinly cut potatoes, done crisp almost like a potato chip), sausage, burgers, and potato latkes are all good bets. Be wary of the chicken special which, though the salad accompanying it was dressed nicely, the potato latke good, the chicken cutlet seasoned well though slightly over-cooked, but the odd onion, mushroom, pickle stuff on top seamed out of place and there was no accompanying sauce. Ketchup and oil and vinegar were the only things suggested/offered by the waiter. 4. It is owned by Russians, and if you are not Russian, and they are busier than usual, you will not get great service. If it is empty, service is better. NOTE: They smack you with a 17% 'service charge' on your bill. We've gone 3 times, and we only just noticed it and I think that is on purpose. When prodded to find out what it was, we discovered it was a gratuity charge. We indicated our irritation at this, since though paying with a credit card, we usually prefer to leave tips in cash and usually leave 20% (at least). However, we didn't appreciate that it was expected of us to pay this, and by all rights, this should not appear on the bill unless they have a policy of charging a particular gratuity on parties of 6 or more (as it is in most places in NYC). They claimed that the $ goes directly to the waiter, but we were dubious at this, and the manager got a tad irate when the charge was questioned. That being said, we left exactly enough, and told them that the charge was shady at best. I hope the poor waiter got his tip, but I'm not paying a bogus "service charge" and then tipping on top of that because the owners are greedy and hoping you didn't notice. It's especially shady when they have that "gratuity breakdown" at the bottom of the receipt--15%, 18%, 20% gratuity on this is that, implying that you need to leave a tip on top of the total.
