This is a pretty good neighborhood spot, especially if you are like my husband and I every time you've gone: not really in the mood to drive anyplace better or there is too much snow on the ground to make finding a spot anyplace an option. I would not go out of my way for the food, though the beer selection is the true draw. That said, go here and understand a few things: 1. Appetizers are all pre-made frozen stuff that is mediocre at best. Pass on the chicken wings and the fried calamari. Edible, but barely. 2. It is a German beer haus, so most of the beer is from Germany and Europe, with too few nods to U.S. craft beers (Delirium, Ommegang, etc.). They are overpriced by A LOT. A Delirium Tremmins should NOT be $12, especially for a neighborhood bar in the middle of Gravesend. 3. Food is pretty good--far from 5 star, but their fries are really good (slices of thinly cut potatoes, done crisp almost like a potato chip), sausage, burgers, and potato latkes are all good bets. Be wary of the chicken special which, though the salad accompanying it was dressed nicely, the potato latke good, the chicken cutlet seasoned well though slightly over-cooked, but the odd onion, mushroom, pickle stuff on top seamed out of place and there was no accompanying sauce. Ketchup and oil and vinegar were the only things suggested/offered by the waiter. 4. It is owned by Russians, and if you are not Russian, and they are busier than usual, you will not get great service. If it is empty, service is better. NOTE: They smack you with a 17% 'service charge' on your bill. We've gone 3 times, and we only just noticed it and I think that is on purpose. When prodded to find out what it was, we discovered it was a gratuity charge. We indicated our irritation at this, since though paying with a credit card, we usually prefer to leave tips in cash and usually leave 20% (at least). However, we didn't appreciate that it was expected of us to pay this, and by all rights, this should not appear on the bill unless they have a policy of charging a particular gratuity on parties of 6 or more (as it is in most places in NYC). They claimed that the $ goes directly to the waiter, but we were dubious at this, and the manager got a tad irate when the charge was questioned. That being said, we left exactly enough, and told them that the charge was shady at best. I hope the poor waiter got his tip, but I'm not paying a bogus "service charge" and then tipping on top of that because the owners are greedy and hoping you didn't notice. It's especially shady when they have that "gratuity breakdown" at the bottom of the receipt--15%, 18%, 20% gratuity on this is that, implying that you need to leave a tip on top of the total. The Draft Barn is the secret hideaway in Brooklyn...the list of beers is so extensive I can't even tell you. This also makes it scary because you want to try them all. We sat outside on a warm day...the waiter/bartender was very helpful in explaining what the types of beer were and the best way to drink them. Oh, and the rye-ish croutons they bring to your table are like crack!!! We were all complaning about the roofs of our mouths being cut and no one could figure out why; turns out it was the croutons..but they are SOOOO good...We sat there for hours, trying brews from around the world and enjoying the breeze,the sun, and the food that we ordered (that did take a bit longer but I think they may do that on purpose so you drink more)...highly recommend! read more

Avoid this place - if you are a beer lover like me. I will never give a bad rating to a place that i have visited only once - one bad experience should not guarantee bad quality of any place. However, i have been to this Draft Barn (there is another one on Dooley Street) 3 (three) times. Third one was the last, because i have never gotten a good experience. Not once. First of all, if you like beer, you will find the beer on tap suspiciously watered down in term of taste. Don't take my word for it - try, let's say Palm, on tap in a bar that you like, and then try it in Draft Barn on Ave X. See if there is a difference in taste, smell, quality of the supposedly same beer. Secondly, last time i was there they had only 5 beers on tap. And with all due respect, i highly doubt they posses all the bottled beers on their huge menu. Which brings me to another point - when I go to a beer bar, i want a good choice of beers on tap, because bottled beer is readily available in any decent beer store (just google them). Thirdly, i cannot say the food is terrible - i like their sausages. But when asked for a well-done burger, i received a piece of charcoal in a bun. The waiter was very nice and polite, but when asked to discharge the coal from the final bill said - "You ordered a well-done. I cannot do that." So if well-done is a charcoal on a bun, then this place is for you. Which brings me to yet another point. There is a 17% Gratuity Fee included on top of taxes in the final bill. So, it doesn't matter if you are a tipper or not - the 17% gratuity is a required fee in this "fantastic" place. I hope this review helps and deters customers from this abominable bar. However, don't take my word for it - go their once and see for yourselves. read more

Horrible place ! I went there today with my girlfriend as we wanted to go somewhere locally. I'm going to make this short and sweet. my so called waiter was Yevgeniy. 1) as all others have said huge selection of beers. 2) HORRIBLE service, after waiting at the tables for about 8 minutes I had to go to the bar and get my own menus ! 3) After waiting another 10 minutes, I had to get up and go to the bartender to request the waiter. While instead of SERVING CUSTOMERS he was hitting on some girls closest to the bar. 4) Calamari were not hot, they were slightly warm. Which makes me think they were heated up. 5) Glass that they brought for the beer was dirty, not dry sport I mean literally dirty. 6) 4 beers, 1 order of calamari and 1 order of croutons came to $80 which included 17% service charge which I didn't catch until I walked out. Even though I really wanted to leave 0 for tips because they just did not deserve them I left $5. As I walked outside I examined the receipt and noticed that 17%!!! automatically included. Me being very direct person I went back asked my check, crossed out the tip I left and changed the total. final impression: ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING service ! If I'm paying Manhattan high end prices I should be getting an outstanding service which obviously does not exist at this place! I left literally angry and was barely holding myself from speaking my mind. This place is reminiscent of the "Red Wedding" episode from the Game of Thrones. There is merriment, good food, and the underlying suspicion that someone may get stabbed over familial rivalries. If you park nearby you may encounter a nutty patron who will threaten to beat, murder, and all together bludgeon your family lest you release your parking spot to his friend (who has not yet arrived). Atmosphere is dark and rustic, with multiple TV's around the space. Food menu is a nice accompaniment to the beer and a step up from the generic "beer and wings." There is a strong Russian influence with the amazingly thick slices of bacon, the stews, and the salads. Service is excellent and the waitstaff knows their stuff. read more

We came here for my friends birthday. We came around 9 PM with our babies in the stroller and they let us in. Great environment with a great interior buildout. The salad and french fries was amazing that my wife ordered. They also let us order an ice cream cake for my friends birthday which is pretty cool. The beers are great. Draft Barn is an amazing local beer bar in Brooklyn. The service is quick, the food is great and the bartenders know more about beer then the master brewers at Sam Adams. If you become a fan try and drink all 250+/- beers that they serve at least once (I'm new to Draft Barn so I'm only on #4). This place is definitely unique. From the outside you have no idea what to expect or if it's even open. Once you enter, it's like a step back in time to a European backroom beer oasis! Just a redlly different from the norm place. A refreshing atmosphere. Primarily a Russian feel, it is quite comforting after you've gulped down your first glass of beer and quite honestly you're not leaving this place after just one. huge fan of this place back when i drank alcohol but still get ONE BEER whenever i am here because of it's insane selection and my vice-love of Belgian Trappist beers. plus the place shows MMA (UFC, Strikeforce) in southern brooklyn which is awesome for me and the 30+ people I bring here for these events! Draft Barn is essentially a beer garden lite. Smaller, more cozy, nice outside seating area, and some TVs that all have Euro-trash/ Russian programming on or Hockey (which suits the proprietors and the clientele). The Beer selection is huge, but do not look for many brands that you are familiar with. They are too good for most American beers (which is a shame, but I get why they arent included). There are only a couple of house beers on tap, which are pretty good. Most bottles are a little pricey, but each comes served in their own special glass. Food there is hit or miss- but one necessity are the beer croutons, really good, greasy fried bread, mmm. Wings are OK, some of the sausage dishes are pretty good too. Never made it to desert. All in all, a fun experience to go with some friends and get drunk . read more

I come to this place to strictly play cards or watch UFC. That's what this place is known for. They have a wide selection of draft beer including German, Czech and Belgium. They also have girlies fruity drinks like strawberry and raspberry ale. I usually get salty croutons for the table, they go really well with the beer. The food is not the best here, no wonder it's called draft barn. A hidden away place in the far Southern reaches of Brooklyn awaits any traveler willing to explore. Best served by the F train stop, from the Avenue X station this place is only a minute walk away. If you come late on the weekend, do not expect to find large crowds or any drunk food places. The neighborhood is largely residential. But, you will find a beer menu with 114 beers, mostly Belgian, American, German, Canadian, and Czech with a few others thrown in the mix. Expect to discover your new favorite beer if you're the adventurous type and have the belly for such adventures. A side effect may be an increase in pant size after frequent travel. A well-honed beer belly's best friend is a nice, crisp, salty, rye-y basket of croutons. I would not blame you for not knowing, as this type of bar snack is not common. In fact, I have yet to find another bar that serves it. In all, a good place to bring a group of friends. They have plenty of space to sit, a few televisions that beam sports or whatever else you request and an outdoor area large enough to house all your smoker friends. read more

Truthfully, i enjoy going to Draft Barn with my friends because it has that atmosphere of a really chill place. They're selection of beer is one that I've never seen before, you have beers from all over the world in one location which is pretty amazing. My favorites are the dark beers that they have on tap (Kostriker) and the mead. There are some issues with the bar as well, for instance the service is really slow. If you don't order a beer at the bar before you find a table then you'll be waiting a while to be served. when you first walk in the bar seems deserted, that's because there are 2 more sections where you could sit. Keep walking in and you will find the second section, there's also an outside deck which is great. All in all, I like to come here with my friends to chat, watch sports, and play some cards. Since I eat only kosher I haven't tried their food, but I have been told that they're beer croutons are quite good. read more

Food options are pretty good and are a lot more extensive than what you would expect to find in a bar. Service is good and turn around is relatively fast and efficient. really unusual brewery place/beer garden and its so out of the way i would not even consider it being there. very quite and we were pretty much the only ones there so unique comparing to other beer bars. food was just ok and i recommend not getting the bar foods their wings are definitely from a frozen package and not good but some of the chef specials are pretty good and definitely something new. read more

This bar has an extensive beer selection, plenty of room inside and a nice seating area outside. Unfortunately, the service is completely incompetent. I ordered a Grolsch at the bar and had to wait 5 minutes for the bartender to return from the basement with a warm bottle. When I ordered the next beer on draft it took another bartender forever to get all the foam out. They also have a Foose Ball table that does not provide you with enough balls to finish a game. read more

This place is a hidden treasure. The staff are all super friendly and helpful, the food is delicious, and the beer is always fresh and crisp. Prices are good, about average for what you'd expect to pay in Brooklyn. And when you go with a group of friends you'll probably be one of the only people there, as this place is criminally underrated (probably a result of the fact that the storefront is dark and practically unmarked).
