Denny's Bar in Kensington Celebrating a Golden Time in 2025 The local tavern has served patrons since 1975. If you come into Denny's bar in Kensington when owner Kevin Ryan is working, he may be sporting an old--but well-kept--T-shirt marking his bar's 25th anniversary. The fact the family business hung around that long is certainly something to be proud of. But this piece of Brooklyn's rich tavern history is turning 50 in the Fall of 2025--a feat not accomplished by many in a borough not short of neighborhood saloons. Located at 106 Beverley Road at the corner of Church and MacDonald avenues in Kensington, Brooklyn, Denny's first opened its doors in 1975 when it was known as Denny's Steak Pub. The proud-to-be old-school spot's origin story actually dates back to the early 1960s when Ryan's father, Dennis, opened and operated Denny's Park Slope Tavern on 9th Street and 7th Avenue until moving the business to Kensington. As for the steaks, they stopped serving those around 1990 when Ryan took over after his father passed away in 1989. Ryan remembers his father working "behind the stick" (an old saying for bartending) always in a shirt and tie, like a conductor in a symphony. Ryan himself has spent a good portion of his life there, first working as a 16-year-old dishwasher, then a busboy, a waiter, and ultimately a bartender when he turned 18. Ryan said his father often hired kids from the neighborhood to work in the restaurant end of the business. Ryan knows the man who worked so hard to build Denny's from the ground up would be proud it is still around a half-century later. "My father was a natural barman and was beloved. It is what he was born to do," Ryan said. "As for me taking over after his untimely passing, I'm sure he would say, 'Ya done good son, but I would have done it better,'" And you know, he's probably right." Today, the local spot located just outside the G and F subway entrance caters to locals and loyal regulars--some who have frequented both locations. On any given day customers will be enjoying cheap drinks and conversation, watching (and debating) sports shown on several TVs around the bar, playing (and debating) the music choices on the jukebox, and shooting pool and darts. The mission statement has been effective: keep it simple and give the people what they want. Over the years, Ryan--also a retired New York City fireman who also worked as a police officer--and his family and friends who have helped run the business have also given back to the community that has supported them since Gerald Ford was president and gas was 50 cents. They have held Christmas toy drives for children and stay involved with the neighborhood. Great Old School Bar The definition of a dive bar. They haven't upgrading the interior in 40 years and that is great thing. A good spot to grad a few beers and enjoy foolish banter. I don't know who gave this place 3 stars but this is THE BEST PUB IN NYC. Authentic Brooklyn vibe, great prices and amazing people. They have Karaoke on the weekends and jukebox that actually plays your songs. Not to mention the pool table. I'm a lover a good, local dive bars, and have been searching for a watering hole in the neighborhood that is unpretentious, comfortable and friendly. I'm new to the area, and was thrilled to happen on Denny's. The drink selection is pretty basic. It's got all the requirements- good music selection, a pool table and enough characters to keep things interesting. It's clean enough, warm enough, and just dark enough. I've only been there on a Saturday night, and my friends and I are always treated enthusiastically. The bartender, Kevin, is friendly, accommodating and full of history he's ready to share. Wait. This place has food? It has been an unchanged fixture in the Kensington neighborhood for years. I remember watching people fall out of this place. Women with bad hair and daisy dukes, horrible muffin top and belly blouses, adorned with fringe....dark black eyeliner and dark lipliner, over frosted pink lipstick....Oh, my eyes. I thought this is the kind of place that you walk into after you have already surpassed the legal limit at the previous 3 bars and you need to use a bathroom. Next thing you know, you start nibbling on the free snacks at the bar. Is it a dive bar? Better. It is an armpit bar. If you are a woman, and walk in alone, you will be the only woman in this bar...alone. But you're safe, here in a community of retirees, who have retired from everything, except drinking. I learned how to do the Dougie in this bar. This bar will not exist in Brooklyn in five years. Or it will exist for 70-170,000 more. Yeah, reverse Pleistocene era. No but this bar is seedy as hell in a neighborhood about 80% Bangladeshi or that's what it feels like. Maybe 65-70% with 10% Orthodox Jew-ish. A-ok is about right. A surprisingly good jukebox. Stopped in to catch a Yankees game and was asked to turn my hat forward. Has anyone experienced this? As a man of color/culture I find this incredibly intrusive. If no one else experienced this... Then potentially racist! It's a BAR... you serve DRINKS... I am happy to pay but I don't support racist or elitist rules. Unless owner can provide a legit explanation on here... This place is a relic, but a well patronized one. I don't really know if they actually serve steaks or any food at all, but they have $1.75 mugs of Bud. Sports on the tvs, cheetos on the bar, and pool tables. Right by the Eff train and ethnically diverse patrons. It's funny to see Paki taxi drivers drinking Corona in an Irish bar, but that's Kensington for ya. Oh, and you can smoke there. read more

The space is large with both bar stools and small tables, a pool table and juke box. For those who want a drink or a snack, a Jack Daniel's is $5.50, far less than in many bars. There is always a hot tray. While the food is not great, it offers a quick snack. And it is free. Generally, during busy hours, the atmosphere is noisy, but friendly. I have been going there for years, having started in order to watch Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls play on Denny's cable TV. Even though I am a fish out of water with my white collar dress, my wife and I have always felt welcome. Some of the bartenders will treat you to a free drink or beer and put out pretzels and other treats. Part of what I like about Denny's is that it connects an earlier Kensington with today. This is reflected in the people who go there. There are still the regulars, many of the men uniformed - (fire, security) or blue collar workers, some with Irish roots, and you will hear occasional brogues. At the same time, today's crowd including some S. Asians and young Caucasians - usually in small groups - are beginning to fill more of the space. And there may be one or two heavy drinkers present. The bar was established in 1975 by Denny Ryan. He owned a bar near Prospect Park. Shenigans. When he won the lottery he bought the building in which Denny is now based, and set up a bar and grill. I must've written my last review after an unusually fun evening, because everytime I walk my dog by there in the evening, the smoking crowd outside is.. okay, there's no other way to put this... mentally ill. This is NOT my way of making a joke. I don't think mental illness is funny. But I also don't think it's a good idea to drink at a bar where there is a serious threat of unwittingly tangling with someone who may or may not be hallucinating at the time. That said, I stand by my insistence that the bartenders are nice and the prices are good. I loved this place! I randomly discovered it and it had such a good vibe - relatively quiet for a bar but playing some chill rock from the 70's. Owner/bartender is aggressive and rude. Verbally abusive and honestly, frightening, like something was really off.

It's a dive bar, pure and simple. On the downside that means it's generally kind of empty inside, with a crew of (seemingly) down on their luck regulars mostly keeping the place going. On the upside, it's cheap and there's sometimes free hotdogs or something offered. It is what it is. Not where you would ever go on a date, or for a fancy cocktail drink, but a place you can get a cheap beer or rum and coke if you just want to get out of your house. read more

This is a dive bar. They no longer serve food (and that's probably a good thing). The drinks are cheap and they do have buy-backs. The taps are probably almost never cleaned though. As a test, get a bottled beer and that same beer on tap and see what you think. The best nights to go are Friday and Saturday in my opinion. Just be prepared :) read more
