This was one of the first places I visited on 5th Ave when I moved back to Brooklyn. They had a beer and shot special which was perfect for cooling off on the hot summer day. They had just opened so I was the only one there save for a barfly or two. The bartender chatted me up and even gave me suggestions on other places to visit in the area. Those suggestions turned out to be why I was recently reminded that I was the baron of Park Slope! Lol. This is the definition of a dive bar. They have a pool table on a platform in the back. They also have at least half-a-dozen pinball machines used by a local pinball league. The vibe is chill and friendly and the drinks are strong. So the first time I went to this bar, I kept being referred to as "Ming." I'm Asian, but my name is NOT Ming. Recently I walked in late around 3am. There were about 20 male patrons in the bar. The female bartender informed me that she called last call. I said okay, but she said I had to leave. I looked around. There were still 20-25 DUDES sitting around. Long story short--I questioned her, and instead of explaining her reasoning like a normal human being, she called me dumb and said I had to leave. It was weird. She's a lanky brunette woman who apparently works on Saturdays? She obviously doesn't know what customer service means and sadly revels too much on the attention of male patrons. I would've said more to her that night, but I simply felt bad for her. Even the bouncer apologized for her behavior... Edit: I've lived in the neighborhood for over a decade. I've been coming here for years, I once hid from my ex, James Bond style in the photo booth in the back. It's always fun times. I've built a rapport with everyone who works here principally Katie which I didn't like at first out of my own bias. There's always an eccentric crow with stragglers, pool players and pinball nerds. This is the perfect bar for a low-key night for when you prefer to be surrounded by quality over quantity, people-wise. Don't get me wrong: There are always people at Buttermilk Bar! But there's never so many people that it becomes miserably crowded and loud--and the people who ARE there are always super nice. I came here tonight with one other girlfriend and was completely disrespected and I can only imagine it was because it was only me and another woman. Buttermilk Bar strikes me as a pretty straightforward place - drink, play games, and have fun. We popped in here one random night wandering around Park Slope and stayed way longer than anticipated, simply because we were enjoying ourselves that much. Carrying a very divey feel (which I support earnestly), Buttermilk has pool, air hockey, darts, and multiple pinball machines, amongst other games. They also have a "bowling" machine, where you slide a puck underneath what looks like pins, although this started malfunctioning mid-game. The bartender did give us a free play on the pinball machine to compensate us, though! Overall, the atmosphere was neighborly and chill, and there is a wide selection of beers to choose from. My girlfriend and our roommate absolutely LOVE this place. Sure, it's nothing special to look at from the outside and very easy to miss (there is no sign on the building, just a board out front of the door), but the inside is filled with a warm, welcoming experience, not to mention the adorable little mascot that greets you as soon as you enter the room! The decor screams "older crowd" but I assure, the bar always contains 20-30 somethings just looking to get some cheap drinks and have a good time. This place has easily become a go-to spot in my neighborhood, as it is just a short walk from my apartment. Highlights of the bar: Free darts, $3 happy hour from 5pm-7pm, $1 air hockey table in the back, a friendly mascot to play fetch with, and a pool table for those who are the drinking/gaming type (although the table is somewhat falling apart and needs re-leveled very badly due to a slight lean on one side, but it's the only pool table in a 6 block span, so who cares). Downsides of the bar: Not an extremely large selection of drafts. They have about 7 or 8 taps, but luckily, they are all good beers and not your typical Bud-Light dive-bar scenario drafts. Overall, it's just a great, low key, relaxed place to hang out and have drinks. If you're into dive bars then this is the place for you. This bar was very very dark and questionably dingy... it really was too dark to see the quality of anything in there. Dive bars are not my thing. If I can't clearly see my glass, table, etc...I don't like it! There is a nice range of things to keep the customers busy- some arcade games, a pool table, etc. The bartender was very nice and I watched her greet many customers by name. This is obviously a spot for regulars. The drinks were good. I had to use my card and I didn't quite hit my minimum but I closed out anyway, and she still insisted on giving me a couple of shots on her own accord. I appreciated the gesture. read more

This is my neighborhood bar on weekdays. I love sitting on a bar stool with a $3 Yuengling and a notebook or crossword puzzle. There's lots of seating, cheap beer, a jukebox and BUCKHUNTER which, if you've read my other reviews you know that that is pretty much all I require. Oh, big selling point, when you come here alone people are willing to talk with you, but only once or twice has someone tried to talk to me without me initiating it first. Been here a few times. Good spot but I when the bartender is more drunk than any patron in the bar and attempts to fight some, it's never a good look. Won't hold it against the place because of one bad bartender but it's gonna lose a star. Lets go into what she did. - Came over asked us what we wanted but had to come back over about three times to ensure she had it right. - Brought us over the wrong drinks and when notified her, she threw the drinks (glasses and all) on the floor behind us. Not in rage at us but just because she was a mess. - Took a few minutes to remember she had to get us new drinks. - Poorly made drink. (Went with beer and shots the rest of the night) - She threw the Halloween candy we were eating on the floor. - Some guy called her a bitch as he left and she hopped over the bar and attempted to "fight" him. - She kept coming over and said "I'm sorry I'm so drunk, can I get you guys anything?" as if it was free. Cheap pints (everything here is 4 DOLLARS with the exception of maybe Guinness but don't quote me on that), great jukeboxes full of mixes which is a change of pace. Somewhat attempt at retro design, the exposed brick walls, the crowd here is incredibly relaxed, maybe too mellow for my taste sometimes, but its a great place to go and never disappoints. There's a shady back couch area which I never go to because it's well shady and dark. Oh, and before I forget, it's got an almost all mix jukebox, similar to Boat Bar. On the one hand, this place is groovy. Cheap drinks, cool vibe, exposed brick walls, nice tunes. On the other hand, it's a dive with tiny, fall apart bathrooms and not a place to eat. If you don't mind Sharpie poetry on your toilet paper dispenser, you'll be fine. But it seems this place is more about the whims of the crowds. It can be empty and it can be full. It can be dead or hopping. There's a pool table that is either not used or is the center of attention. In other words, it's a simple place that changes wildly depending on the night/momentum. Love this bar. This is the place to go after a party. The drinks are strong and inexpensive and the bartenders are fast. It's loud but you can still hear people across the table from you. Yeah, there are tables. Lots of them. The lighting is dim but not too dark and there are candles everywhere. Love the music on the jukebox--it's a good mix, as others have said. The location is slightly off the beaten path, which is cool because it keeps things real and unpretentious and you're likely to get a seat. I wish Union Hall had the same crowd. Buttermilk reminds me a lot of Fresh Salt, which is my favorite neighborhood bar in Manhattan. Add this to the list of reasons to look forward to moving to Brooklyn. read more

When I used to live near here years ago this was the bar I would run home to after work and patiently wait for my roommate to get over. It's changed drastically over the years. It's still a watering hole but the greatest dive to have a chat with the neighbors, play a game of pool, order a pint or well drink for $3 until 9pm. They also have a decent selection for a dive: Shiner Bock, Sweet Action, Kelso, Stella, Guinness. Go crazy. Wells from what I remember were super strong but it depends on your bartender. They also used to come in much bigger glasses. A few months ago they nose-dived to a C-rating and one of my friends refused to go inside when wandering the neighborhood. But this past weekend. . . .hoo hoo hoo, someone jacked that up to an A! Its my lucky day! I went inside and noticed the ski ball was gone. Frowny face. But they still have Big Buck, Ms. PacMan, and that pool table. The jukebox has a fantastic selection. I love Buttermilk. Not just strongly like. LOVE. It's barely noticeable when walking by because they don't have a flashy sign or any decor on the outside but inside its strangely warm and welcoming. I was more than pleased with this upscale *cough* establishment, which my roommate has nicknamed buttertits. Not entirely sure why, but it seems oddly appropriate. This total dive is a nice escape from...well...other total dives on 5th Ave. in Park Slope. My drink was strong and pretty cheap. I went with Ms. Caitlin O who seemed to have a bit of a problem ordering "fancy" drinks - like a Tom Collins. I suggest, just keep it simple - two ingredients max or just order a beer. The decor is uhhh rustic, but cute. I was also digging the vintage school desks. People seemed relatively chill and not too bro-esque, which was appreciated. read more

I went to Buttermilk last night with a friend of mine who I hadn't seen in several years. We caught up over beers, as people tend to do at that place. She then decides that she wants a martini. My initial thought was "this isn't really a martini bar, but hey, sometimes the booze wants you and there's not much you can do to help it." She then asks me "What kind of martinis do they have?" I pause, think for a second and reply "Uhh vodka, gin...". And she says no no, like do they have strawberry martinis or chocolate martinis? Despite her growing up in Staten Island, it became clear that her current Jersey roots were showing. I pointed towards some flavored Stoli they had, but that didn't work either, so she summoned the too cute for her own good bartender over. "What kinds of martinis do you have?" she inquired again... "We have gin, and vodka." She shakes her head and tries to describe what she wants. The bartender thinks about it, and ends up chilling a martini glass, rubbing a lemon peel on the inside, splashing some vermouth and giving her a gin martini. The result? Not favorable. Oh well. At least it was well mixed drink. I continued with my Brooklyn Lager and laughed. I guess that's kind of a long-winded way of saying this is a pretty simple bar. Get beer, get shots of Jager or vodka. Leave the cocktailcrafting to Sidecar, across the street. Oh yeah, and despite several patrons loving the Guiness on tap, I had to deduct points for them pouring a sloppy pint of it. Everything else though, spot on. read more

What a great neighborhood dive bar. It's quite roomy in this place, even with all the games. There's a pool table, some pinball machines, there's a bowling game. They have a tv tuned into Jeapardy every weekday at 7pm and whatever game everyone is interested in the rest of the time. The bartenders are all fantastic. They have a decent selection of beer and liquor. Surprisingly, the place gets filled up in the later hours after 12AM. Who likes empty bars? Not I. If your travels take you to the South Slope, don't pass up the opportunity to check this place out. You won't regret it. read more

Decent dive-ish bar in kinda South Slope. Come with a crew or expect to feel less important than the regulars, of which there are many. There's pool, air hockey and buck hunter. Don't expect a buy-back if they don't know your name, no matter how much more you're tipping than those damn regulars. Also, someone will definitely take your spot at the bar, and while I've seen bartenders shoo off similar stool-stealers at other bars, it's not happening here. You either come all the time, or you're expendable. Prices are in line with expectations. Which means cheap enough. I am only writing this review because I believe that I was asked to leave this bar because of the color of my skin. A man and a woman introduced themselves as the 'owners' to me, while striping me of all my rights at the bar over a pool table misunderstanding with another customer. In the herd of trying to prove 'who she was', the women (owner) shut down the pool table, refused to lend an ear to hear the slightest information that I had to provide her with, took our drinks away, charged us for it, lost our credit card, and more importantly, called me racist abusive names that pointed toward my ethnicity, as she asked us to get out. The very nature of this interaction proves that the owners are racists and incompetent to handle the bar they are trying to run and work with 'assumptions' about anyone who walks in. She was accompanied by a huge man who was yelling at us like we were some punks and gloating and shouting as loud as he could as we were leaving (and we were two tiny girls!). I believe that my neighborhood is safe and I have never faced racism here. It's people like these that destroy the United spirit of this neighborhood and Brooklyn! Response to the business owner's comment: I'm not sure if it is normal for you to ignore harassed customers or if it was okay to unleash your white bouncer at us (we were two tiny girls!!) and ask us to get out when we said that you were being racist. You sure are a good storyteller and I don't need your luck or as much as breathe the same air in the presence of your white supremacy. I'm sure you don't know what you did wrong. How would you? Get you facts correct. It wasn't a trans joke. Educate yourself. It was a respectful mention of he/she is not giving up the pool table, as it should be. A very casual laid back bar, perfect setting for if you want to have a conversation with someone over drink. On a Sunday evening, this place was very calm and easy to find a place to sit. This review is based on a few Wednesday visits after not being by the bar for several years. I think it is really great the bar expanded its game selection since it opened. I was a regular then as well as at Boat and met my partner at Great Lakes. I knew the old community of those places. Coming back last year, I really felt uncomfortable with the bartender and the way she treated some customers. She seems very confrontational and maybe she has to be that way for some of the current regulars but it makes one feel uncomfortable. read more
