I came here for the weekly Bitches Brew comedy show on a Friday night. It was all the way in the back. It started around 8:30pm, but the seats easily filled up. If you go for that, I'd recommend getting there around 8:15. I don't expect anything when it comes to comedy shows, but I was genuinely impressed. I visited Halyards before a show at Bell House on a Thursday night and was happy to see that it was busy but not packed. Our drinks were made quickly, and there was enough seating for my group. My friends grabbed beers but decided to try out the Light Wind. The Light Wind is a gin and lemon cocktail, which was fresh and delicious. The bartender was friendly and made great small talk while he made my drink. The indoor space is much larger than what you see when you initially enter Halyards, and the back area includes a pool table and a room with smaller tables. There is also an outdoor seating area with picnic benches making it a great spot for group meet-ups. If you're in the area I would definitely recommend Halyards! read more

We came here last night to redeem our Autumn Tippler cocktail. The gentleman who was running the place said he was just about to close up but he would stick around a little longer for us since we came all this way. It was super nice of him to do so, but we couldn't help but feel a little bad since he was on his way out. We got our Anne Bonny cocktail and a small pizza for the table. The employee who took care of us put the Simpsons on the big projector screen. He then came over to tell us that there was absolutely no rush. He's used to leaving at 12 or 1 in the morning so 9PM is very early for him either way. Honestly, by this point, it was our fourth stop of the tour so I was a bit tipsy. I don't remember too much about the quality of the cocktail or the food but I remember how awesome the service was. Went to Halyards for drinks on Sunday afternoon. A bar in an unexpected location with fun drinks and a cool space. Quality: On a warm summer day we were looking to have a frozen drink and ended up at Halyards. The bar is a bit isolated in the Gowanus area and easy to forget about. They had Froses, Pina Coladas, and Margaritas available, along with a list of other drinks and some bar snacks. I was a big fan of the Pina Colada, which had a good consistency and taste. I was less excited about the Frose, which needed some sweetness added. It felt too heavy on just wine. Quantity: No issues with the size or strength of the Frozen Cocktails. Value: $10 for Frozen Cocktails. Ambiance: Halyards sits on the corner of 3rd Avenue in Gowanus. Just south of the massive Whole Foods, it is in an area heavily populated with garages and warehouses, but not many bars or restaurants. They have a pretty large space both inside and out. We were only inside for a moment, but there was a large bar, some high-tops, and it appeared a sort of game room in the back. Outside they were able to create an expansive patio area being the only bar on the block. It is a pretty nice setup with umbrellas, lights, plants, and picnic tables. They also had music playing outside, which is missing from a lot of COVID related outdoor spaces. Crowd: A few small groups hanging out in the outdoor patio area on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. Service: The bartender was great. Despite being the only staff out in the bar area, he made sure to circulate through the outdoor area to refresh drinks. I came here during the Autumn Tippler to try their featured drink, the Anne Bonnie. Let me start off by saying, that the staff is super friendly. The person taking my order at the window was very knowledgeable about the drinks and food. I placed my order and seated myself at one of their outdoor tables. I ordered the Deviled Eggs for a bite and for drinks the Anne Bonnie and the Pumpkin Mezcal Margarita. The food was good, however, I wasn't impressed with the drinks. I found that the drinks were lacking in taste, especially the Pumpkin Mezcal Margarita. I do hope they improve it as the drink has so much potential. read more

I remember being here once when it was pouring outside and my friend and I were determined to get our free beer from one of those brokelyn beer books. I also remember liking this bar because their drafts were pretty cheap for being in the middle of the night, the bartender was cool, and more importantly they were hosting an evening of showing all of the Star Wars movies. You didn't have to say or do anything else. You won my heart. It's over. Came here this past weekend and it's still cheap and divey no matter what time of day or night but they do have an awesome happy hour and the vibe and people here are pretty fantastic. Mon-Fri 4-7pm - $2 off all drafts, $9 for their fancier cocktails that are normally around $10-12ish (still not bad for a cocktail), $6 wines, $5 wells. The place is very cool, a pool table, considerate staff and snacking food available. They have a pretty good beer selection, and pizza is good but toppings run out fast. I came for the GOT premier and got there 2.5 hrs prier to get good seats, unfortunately their tech had issues so they moved people to the back room and so there goes our seats. Everyone raced in and we were left in the back, ended up leaving and wasting half the evening holding down our seats and not seeing the premier. First recommendation to staff during this sort of situation is to have a back up plan ready, more staff for these sort of events, over stock than under stock on food.. get an idea of what to expect and estimate the quantities. I am sure they are up to the task for future events, and I like the place so I look forward to returning to see the results of their experiences. although the situation sucked, I was lucky enough to be in a great mood and good company so I had a good time either way. read more

I don't even like bars. I went here twice last night. TWICE. This must be love. I've walked by several times during the day and have often been curious about this little white brick place, Halyards. They steered me absolutely right. I arrived first and enjoyed a French 75 at the bar while wearing black stripes and red lipstick. My attire has nothing to do with it, but regardless...I dug the vibe. The French 75 was a treat, as well...served in a champagne flute. Jenga. Pool. Darts. Cocktails$8. Dim light. Nice people. Not crowded. Cozy. Wine. Beer. Cocktails$8. Buttermilk Channel called, and our group of 4 quickly shuffled to have dinner...it's the first time (maybe ever) I thought to myself "I'm not done here yet! There are other things here to drink and do and see." Nonetheless, Buttermilk Channel waits for no one, and we left... The End. --- Not quite. After dinner our group split and we headed back to our Gowanus apartment...almost. We diverted to Halyards for two more drinks around 1130pm, and it was perfectly and contentedly buzzing without being overwhelming or obnoxious. People were laughing and playing Jenga and getting drunk and enjoying their friends and it was one of those utopian nights where everyone that wants to sit has a chair and the bartender is never too busy to make you a drink. It was lovely. I would certainly be back next time we want to do cocktails or drinks in the 'hood. A great lounge hidden amongst 3rd Avenue with just the recipe for a good night of drinking that will not be a scene or stress you out. *Come early for darts/pool...especially on weekends. *Accept credit cards, but obviously cash is easier. *Several long communal tables = great for groups. *Easy street parking (though I don't recommend driving) nights/weekends or easy walking distance to 4th Ave/9th Street trains. The hardest working Bartender in Brooklyn. I'm so sorry i didn't catch his name!! But i did enjoy his mixology skills! I popped in here for a drink before a show at the Bellhouse and it was a VERY quiet Sunday afternoon when i arrived at 6pm. The bartender was friendly. The bar proceeded to get REALLY busy. But he still took the time to be friendly and attentive to me and my friends at the bar. I saw him mixing 3 drinks at one time! this guy is a PRO. on top of all this, he was testing out new recipes and asked our opinions- they were both DELICIOUS. The owner of Halyards really got lucky with this bartender - hope he holds onto him and goes for the new drinks too!! Nothing like a fresh season cocktail menu! I am never really in this area but this bar seems very neighborhood friendly. A version of "Cheers" lets say. Alot of people use that reference but I think I would definitely head back here whenever I am around this part of town. The crowd was pretty live for early in the night on a saturday. The Brooklyn East India Pale ale that I had here was pretty impressive. I agree usually not too crowded it seems. I would come back with a large group, that would probably make it more fun. This might be my new favorite bar! The A-frame outside advertised "cozy up w/ beer, whiskey, and wine" and that's exactly what we did. In fact, I would say you can down right hot at Halyards. They've got a couple different areas, loosely separated by walls w/ open doorways. You first walk in to the long dark wood bar accompanied by 2 bar-height communal tables situated in an L configuration (one of them contains beautiful copper bowls filled with JENGA blocks!!!). Beyond that is a smaller room that barely contains a pool table atop a cowhide, a dart board, and two tiny tables. The last and smallest room has a huge U-shaped party booth, the last stop before reaching the restrooms all the way at the back. I loved the layout, the laid-back vibe, and the reasonable but well curated cocktail and beer list. I had a delicious seasonal pumpkin ale while my two friends sipped beautifully executed cocktails from champagne and martini glasses. Our bartender for the evening was attentive and knowledgeable but kept everything relaxed. The tunes running out of his laptop at the end of the bar were a pleasant mix of indie and mainstream pop/rock, not blasting too loud to drown out conversation. If only Halyards weren't a dismal Gowanus-style trek from a subway line I think I would move every friendly meet-up I could there! I bike, so I didn't feel too intimidated getting to and from but I was concerned for my fellow (petite) ladies making a long trek back to civilization close to midnight. read more

Went as a Pregame stop before the Bell House, probably worth checking out if you are making your way to this area. It was a very unintimidating bar, plenty of space on a Friday around 11:30. I enjoyed the variety of seating options, besides bar space there were small tables, a long communal table, and past the pool table a private table and a private booth which I feel works for any type of gathering. Draft beers were $6 or so, and I had a delicious grilled cheese for around the same price. The bartender was cool and approachable. Food consists of frozen pizza type food - albeit fancy frozen pizzas - and cocktails are as reasonably priced as far as cocktails go. The seasonal selections I got all seemed to be lacking something - almost a little watered down tasting - but that didn't stop me from imbibing about four of them. Halyards is a great neighborhood bar, and has a really cool back room with a screen setup that's perfect for small events. My nonprofit uses this space for film screening events each year, and Halyards is always really accommodating and helpful. They often only have one person manning (or womanning) the bar, but that person is always killing it keeping up with all the drink orders! The food options are limited but perfect for bar snacking. Even though the pizzas are frozen, they are really quite tasty! I definitely recommend the one with truffle oil. They usually have a handful of nice beer options on tap, and a list of seasonal as well as traditional cocktails. The wine list is pretty small, but this is not that kind of a bar. There's a pool table and a dartboard and lots of cool peeps-- check it out. read more

Not sure of whom Mr. Thomas C. was speaking in his review, but if it's the same bartender I see there every Sunday when I watch the game, he either caught her on a bad day (spoiler alert: bartenders are also humans :o) or just has no idea what he's talking about. The Sunday in question was extremely busy. I was also there. Despite that, my interactions with the same bartender were all extremely friendly and fun! She is the first bartender I met here, when seeking refuge as a Pats fan in hostile territory, and she has always been just as kind since. OK, so... As for the rest of the bar, it's a great time, especially on Sundays during football season for the Pats games. The bar gets packed with people who all just want to cheer along with you for your favorite team and have some beers (ok, and shots, if you're my husband and me). A friend and I came here last night for Bitches Brew, a weekly comedy show. Arriving just after 6:00, we were able to take advantage of happy hour, which runs Monday through Friday from 4:00 until 7:00. Since it was Friday, I started out with a Manhattan. Complete with a Halyards cherry, it hit the spot. The bartender also gave me a glass of sparkling water, which was refreshing. After all, Manhattans are potent, especially in Brooklyn ;) The show didn't start until 8:30, so we ordered another round and a pickle plate before making our way to the back room. Selecting a simple pilsner, it paired well with the pickles. The show itself was great. A total of six comedians and the host made me laugh so much over the course of an hour that by the time it had finished, my mouth hurt. I needed that. I definitely plan to return. read more

We played a show here the other day. We were in the basement venue portion of the place, so this is a review for that. The space is pretty small, and yet there are a bunch of tables crammed in there for good measure, but navigating the crowd was not as hard as it looked at first. The sound there was surprisingly good, and the stage looked small, but provided more than enough space for even the four-member bands that played. The bands made a decent sum off of the door sales, and the members were each given a drink ticket, which is somehow NOT common practice at most places.
