Not to be confused with the much swankier The Skylark (https://www.yelp.com/biz/the-skylark-new-york?osq=skylark) in Manhattan, Skylark Bar is located in the grittier and eclectic Park Slope neighborhood in Brooklyn. It is the kind of neighborhood bar which I enjoy frequenting. The drink menu is decidedly beer focused, with a secondary emphasis on shots of hard liquor; although my party was able to get a half decent margarita on the rocks. And the "food options," are limited to chips and/or chips/salsa from a bag. That's it. You come to a place like Skylark Bar because you're gonna grab a few drinks and chill with your crew. The interior is a cross between 70's basement motif, mixed with 80's bar decor punctuated with semi-uncomfortable wooden seating. Bonus points for having old skool pinball machines, which gobbled up many quarters during my youth; btw, don't shake the machines too hard since the TILT setting is awfully sensitive. Skylark Bar is the kind of place the DC area desperately needs. Instead, what we have instead are gentrified establishments which try and give off the "retro" vibe which have PBR on tap to seem cool, all while selling the latest extra hoppy 10% IPA for $13. THE BARTENDER HURT MY FEELINGS. I came to the skylark for my first drink in several months due to a bout of illness from my autoimmune disease. Despite the negative effects alcohol can have on the body I thought it might be nice for me to have a drink with my friends and take a load off. Boy was I wrong. When I approached the bar the bartender had his back turned, and ignored me for a LONG time. I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt, and assumed he was just busy. After waiting for quite some time a very beautiful woman came to the bar and to my surprise the bartender served her immediately! Due to my illness, I currently have a bald head and look EXTREMELY bad. I try not to let this dissuade me from venturing out into the world, but experiences like this don't make it easy. When the rude bartender finally did take my order I chose not to tip him, to which he said GEE THANKS A LOT. The whole experience was very upsetting and I will NOT be coming back. You have made a life long enemy today. read more

When I read that Skylark advertised itself as "look[ing] like your mom's living room in the 1970s," I didn't realize they were speaking directly to me. I mean, there's literally an oil painting and a paint-by-number hanging on the walls that were in my childhood home. And don't try and be a smartass, because if you think my mom didn't have a large bar in the middle of a simple two bedroom city apartment, well, you just pay her a visit, pull up a stool and wait for her to whip you up one of the greatest whiskey sours you'll ever have. But I digress... the homey decor and chill, welcoming vibe is a large part of the charm of Skylark. The mix of bar space, regular tables and seats/couches is delightful and feels haphazard yet somehow perfectly natural. There is a pinball machine in the back, along with a large selection of board games for your drinking amusement. On Sunday night, they host an exceedingly fun trivia night run by Trivial Dispute - exciting, topical, interesting trivia (with numerous bonus free shot rounds). The bartenders are efficient and friendly - especially the wonderful Guillermo. The draft beer and whiskey selection is generally excellent, and the prices are quite reasonable, especially for the area. The the Specialty Cocktail is varied and interesting - the traditional Old Fashioned is solid, and the Maple Ginger Old Fashioned quite special. The one disappointment for me was their Bloody Mary, which was overwhelmed by spices (and I generally like spicy). Of course, if you're not in the mood for pondering all of these interesting drink selections, just pull up a stool and order yourself a $3 bottle of the Champagne of Beers, Miller High Life. They have a small assortment of panini sandwiches if you desire a bar snack, but are also quite permissive if you are more in the mood to stop at the pizza place halfway down the block to bring something in. As a place to while away the hours over a beer or a bourbon and coke, playing games with your friends, listening to great tunes and overall just feeling like you're hanging out in your friend's basement... it's a pretty hard vibe to beat. read more

I think 3.5 is a fair rating but I can't say it was quite a four-star experience for me. A fun Park Slope hangout (though this is coming from a Manhattan person, hold your groans, please), a nice place to come with a group of friends. Pretty chill, slightly-nicer-than-a-dive vibe and decently-sized. There's not much more to say to sum this place up, other than that it's an okay spot to end up at if you're in the neighborhood, but that you ought not go out of your way to come here. A friend of mine had part of her birthday party here, hence our trek from the Upper West Side (I happen to love this friend a lot, otherwise a 90 minute commute would not be in the cards). I can see why one would pick it to have a relaxed, pregame-type gathering (we went dancing afterwards). Skylark is more spacious than it seems, and its got a warm atmosphere. Plus, there's a pinball machine in that back if you want to make your inner, Dave & Busters-obsessed child happy. And yes, the bf and I made a beeline there, because pinball. Think drinks here are unfortunately not as good as advertised. I'm not so oblivious that I'd expect a place like this to be labeled a "cocktail bar" (oh my gosh I'm getting that truly this whole review might be one big, pretentious vomit) but I suppose the house infusions got my hopes up. In my experience, bars with selections of infused liquors are of a certain caliber. They tend to be well-crafted and well-thought-out (yup, I'm pretentious and punctuation nightmare, hello world). Not the case at the Skylight. The cocktails are tiny and underwhelming at best. I suppose it didn't help that there was one lone man behind the bar. Typically I don't feel sorry for a lonely SWM, but this was an exception. It was a Saturday night, the place was bumping with a party plus normal patrons, and the guy looked like he had just walked through a rainstorm. He was doing his best, but overworked and frazzled to be sure. The first drink I ordered was sadly undrinkable (at least for me). It was meant to be some sort of Old Fashioned, but it tasted like straight Bourbon. No mixer, no bitters, no nothing. Bourbon served with a couple of teeny straws. I happen to be a big whiskey drinker, but when you're expecting a fully-formed cocktail and receive a glass of what seems to be well bourbon, it's not the kind of surprise that makes a person jump for joy. At least not me, a pretentious warthog of a human being. Next drink was the Salty Studbaker (Basil-infused vodka, fresh grapefruit & a salt rim). Better (meaning drinkable, in this case), but not as good as the description makes it out to see. Part of this is my general aversion to vodka, but the rest is that I tasted no basil and I watched him "salt" the rim, a feeble attempt. I know this is scathing stuff, but I'm a nut when it comes to cocktails so sometimes the hammer needs to come down. Overall, this drink was refreshing and just fine. My other drink, the Thunderbird (Jalapeño-infused Tito's vodka and ginger beer) was a similar type of experience to the Studbaker. I love *anything* spicy and the bf has a weak stomach, so my one chance to indulge is typically beverage-related. Usually, spicy cocktails only come in the tequila variety, so I was thrilled to see this. Again, refreshing and just fine. Nothing more. Oh! And they have board games! So if you are supremely board--err, bored (sorry)--for some reason, play some Yahtzee (if all dice involved are still present, that's always a crapshoot). It honestly IS fun here. I visited this place back in February 2014 on a very snowy day and I popped in here with a friend and fell in love with quaint inviting atmosphere, great seasonal beer selections perfect for the weather, and a small but great tasting food selection. Fast forward to September 2014 and I finally made it back to this bar hoping for more good food and beer. The seasonal beer selections are still great. The Southern Tier Pumking Ale is my favorite pumpkin brew. However, the kitchen is no longer available. They have a food menu that offers some [prepackaged] sandwiches that look good described on the menu but taste like something that you'd get from a vending machine. Don't waste your time or money with these small appetizers unless you've sat there for a long time as some locals appear to do and you need to soak up some of the alcohol from the heavier beers. All in all it's a nice kitschy place to come in a relax and have a drink, and the free wifi is a plus but they lost something special when they closed the kitchen down. *shrugs*. If I ever move to the area, I'm sure I'd pop back in, but I likely won't make the effort to venture over there from my neighborhood to indulge this place. read more

Very OK. I came here on a whim while showing a friend around the neighborhood. I figured we'd try a new bar for drinks on a Saturday night. There's plenty of space in here. We were lucky to snag the couch toward the back of the bar. It wasn't crowded so I'd be interested to know how Skylark does on a Saturday night in the summer. The prices are basic. Board games are up for grabs. Just not a place I'd seek out for a drink. Maybe I'll give them another try in the spring. read more

They say everything stylish happens in 40 year cycles, which is why Mad Men is currently the "it" show on TV and the Beatles are burning up the iTunes charts. The 60s are hip. Perhaps the owners of Skylark are thinking ahead of the curve, for they have launched a cool tavern that has staked out the 70s for their decade of inspiration. Funky art sits about throwback furniture in pastel colors that would make the Brady Bunch feel at home. I've been in plenty of bars that go for the retro-feel only to build it with dying furniture and thrift-store clearance items. Here, the older stuff seems much more curated, almost new. There's even 2 restored pinball machines. Quite a few people were kicking back in the living room-like areas, having conversations (no TVs and I didn't even notice if there was any music) while others bellied up to the bar. Speaking of which, the bar scene is totally modern. They aren't pushing martinis or bourbon & Tab. Rather, it's a pretty standard bar with wine/liquor/bottles and 14 beers on tap. For food, they serve a fairly simple menu of apps and sandwiches (see photo). My compatriots raved about their onion soup panini, but I'm going to guess that the food offerings will evolve/change, being so new a place. And though I mentioned it has a 70s vibe, don't think of this as a theme bar. Rather, it's more a neighborhood bar with unique decor. Update necessary! Why? Because Good Fork is cooking here - GO!!! because its delish and because you want to support their re-opening post-Sandy. I am a huge fan of the Good Fork and loved their Red Hook location. While they are rebuilding, I was thrilled to hear that they would still be cooking out of Skylark. The menu is abridged and modified to accommodate more bar driven fare, but you can certainly still make a meal out of it. We had about 1/2 the menu (couldn't resist) including the pulled pork korean style, the sweet and spicy chicken wings, the kimchi pancakes with bacon, and the cornbread. Washed down with several beers of course. Everything was a hit, except for the wings which are baked and therefore a little fatty. Cornbread is absolutely delish drizzled with honey butter. Pancakes have chunks of mapley flavored bacon. Pulled pork comes out as a sandwich with radish slaw that is packed with flavor. I'm not sure what's going to happen once Good Fork is operational again in Red Hook (hopefully this menu will stay at Skylark), but enjoy for now! Seriously! read more

Kitschy bar in the middle of Park Slope. Relatively new. I've been here a few times over the past year and every time I come I notice something new on their walls. Comfy seating with couches and booths in the back (to nap on) the bartender joked. Also, bowls of candies adorn their tables. I've never tried eating here but I'm always tempted by such things you don't expect to find in a bar: deviled eggs, meatloaf sandwiches, kimchee pancakes, and pork & chive dumplings. All of those delectable things have my heart on them. But usually I tend to just come in for a pint. Wide selection on tap for a $1 off during happy hour and $4 wells. Or you can combine a can and a shot for $6. Not bad deals and friendly staff and great ambience. They even have board games! read more

This may be my new favorite bar in Park Slope. Not only is it steps away from other sweet spots, but it's got cheap drinks and nice bartenders. What more could you ask for? So I was supposed to go to Monro Pub to watch the FRANCE v. England World Cup but was detoured (luckily) to the Skylark a few doors down... At first I didn't know what to think because it wasn't packed out the door but it had a great chill vibe to the place. As the game got closer to start time, the place started to get packed and felt like the kind of place I'd go a lot. My friend met me and we sat at the bar. 3 TV's above the bar almost made us feel closer as we watched a great game. I chatted up w a few locals (A nice guy from Denmark who was a regular) and chugged some beers. The bartender (I believe his name was John) was a great guy and really ran the whole room all by himself. When it got crowded I wondered how he'd take care of everyone but he did and was attentive to all... All in all a great experience and definitely a place I'd come to again. Really felt a comforting vibe while I was there... Best part about this place is that the prices were amazingly cheap. I would definitely recommend this place !!! read more

Well, this is a big improvement from the bar that was in the space prior. It used to be an old man bar, that I only entered with the presence of a regular. It's a nice space, with a decent sized bar and plenty of tables to sit at. The front windows open so we were able to get a cool breeze. I was there during the workday so there wasn't a crowd. The decor was well conceived. It has the feeling of a 60s/70s basement, complete with tacky colors, mismatched furniture, and paint by numbers pictures on the wall. A lot of cute adornments like owls, funky clocks and those pictures that are lit up or fuzzy. There are two pinball machines in the back and the women's room was clean enough. I like that they serve a wide price range of beers (on taps that have classic clear doorknobs as handles-maybe someone went shopping at Anthropologie for these..) starting at $3 for Genesee Cream Ale in a can. They had a brunch menu, all items around $10 and all from the Good Fork, but the food felt like it took nearly an hour to be served. Did they make it in Red Hook and walk it over? No one else was there. Not sure what the wait was about. The bartender was friendly and while there was no waitress service, if you placed your order at the bar they started a tap if they held your ID. There apparently would have been a charge if we wanted separate bills...not sure that's customary. I don't love the other bars in close proximity, so I will have to give this another chance but I think it probably bypasses the vibe of the others. Pretty fun place! We sat outdoors, but the indoors decor is petty funny - full of items you might have seen in your grandma's house, like enamel jars with painted roosters. The draft beer selection is good and Ok priced. They also had one type of cider. I also liked that all the drafts came in pints, and there wasn't this dizzying- and frustrating- array of drink sizes and prices. Don't come here for food. Three items on the menu were chips (not even fries), soft pretzel, and some sandwiches that I somehow don't think would look or taste great. But there is enough attraction to come here anyway. Any bar that plays both Black Flag and Gillian Welch is cool by me. Skylark has the comfortable feel of hanging out in someone's basement...complete with kitchen chairs that I swear my parent's had in the 70's. They have a really decent selection of beers on tap. The gin and lemon juice cocktail I also consumed was quite potent. To accompany our beers we had the corn bread with spiced honey butter, stuffed mushrooms, pickled vegetables, and shiitake hummus with black sesame crackers. (all food from Red Hook's The Good Fork). Came here on Sunday for the first time to hang out with my friends for trivia. Having been in the area a zillion times, I couldn't believe I'd never noticed it before. Anyway, Skylark is a nice neighborhood place whose decor is a mix of old school bar and something from That 70's Show. The front has standard bar seating and the back has refurbished couches and small tables with big bowls of candy. There is a decent beer selection with local brews and an assortment of mixed drinks. Bartenders are friendly and you can sample beers before you commit to a full pint. I didn't eat while I was there, but the menu comes courtesy of Red Hook's The Good Fork, so you can try their awesome dumplings or something with kimchi. Props to Skylark for allowing them to use the kitchen, as the actual restaurant was hit hard after the hurricane. The trivia was well-executed and fun, and the host (my friend's friend - Adam I think?) was super entertaining. It was free to play and bar tabs were awarded to the winners. There were also shot questions too, where the first person to call out the correct answer received a mystery shot that tasted of cheap booze and shame. Generally I stick to sports bars and the like, but this was a place I'd return. It's a bit kitschy and perhaps even a bit nerdy (although that may have been bc I was there on trivia night), but overall not bad at all. *$15 minimum for cc purchases, which can be a bit irritating... but you weren't just going to have *one* drink, were you? read more

I like this bar because it's selfishly close to my apartment, and all my other bartender friends are really psyched when I suggest we meet here. They've got food. They have $3 High Life, which is incredibly important to me. The bartenders are really fucking nice. They open early, which means I can drink a beer while I read the paper. This place is awesome! I've gone several times now, and each time I'm happy with the service and the food/drink. The bartenders usually remember my order, and refill my drinks without being prompted. Julie (who I think is the owner) is sometimes behind the bar, and is always a pleasure. The sandwiches are really good, especially the french onion soup sandwich! Which might sound odd, but it's really really good. As an added bonus, they have a vintage Star Trek pinball machine! I've wasted many dollar bills on that machine... Overall, a great local spot. After just a few months of (some fairly significant) renovations, I was surprised to see that Skylark was already open, so my roommates and I decided to check it out. Some will surely decry the loss of Timboo's, the old neighborhood dive that preceded the swankier Skylark, (and yeah, it kind of sucks), but I have to say I like what became of the place. It's warm and cheery. Tables and chairs have replaced the bar stools that used to line the right wall, and a couch and a couple of arcade games have replaced Timboo's old pool table. There's a good selection on tap (in the $5-6 range) - Allagash White, Brooklyn Lager, Sixpoint Sweet Action, etc. in addition to your standbys in cans and bottles (Tecate, Bud, etc.) They also have food, including a few veggie sandwich options, which I hope to try soon. It will be interesting to see what kind of clientele will settle into Skylark's. We went for their grand opening on Friday, so there was a fairly eclectic and convivial crowd. read more

The bartender refused us service upon entry because she (incorrectly) assumed we were too inebriated. We had had a few drinks before stopping at this bar and were immediately turned away because she saw we had just finished a beer outside the bar and left the can outside (this is nyc). We were respectful when discussing the situation to the bartender and left without any qualms beyond annoyance. She then called the bar down the street (the Commonwealth) and told them we had been belligerent and left an outside beer ON the bar, for which we were also turned away. A decent spot, feels like you're in your friend's man cave because it's casual, with interesting whiskey and gin specials. We went wandering around on Sunday night hoping to find a place that was doing a weekend happy hour, and stopped at Skylark. I'd walked by it several times and had never been compelled to stop in, but the cheery blue tables and chairs outside were calling my name this weekend. A decent draft selection, a decent happy hour and a tasty Brooklyn Lager and pretzel combo (with pretzels in fun flavors like Everything and Cheddar Bacon), so what's not to love? The service was attentive even though we were outside around the corner on the patio, and everyone was friendly. I was there celebrating with a coworker on a Monday afternoon and Anna did a tequila shot with us. The happy hour is what prevents this place from getting 5 stars - it's only $1 off draft beers. However, the food makes up for it. My friend had the "French Onion Soup" sandwich - if you're a fan of the soup, you MUST try the sandwich, as it was fantastic. They have plenty of board games...I haven't lost so badly at Connect 4 in years. If you're a resident of Park Slope like myself and remember this place as Timboo's, the clientele has definitely shifted. Skylark is a great neighborhood bar, and I give it extra points for taking in The Good Fork after Sandy so that they could keep cookin' up their delights. The interior is adorable. Not too hipster-BK-chic, but just the right amount. The candy bowls on the tables are cute too, and after a few drinks you might find yourself enjoying some double bubble, or some Smarties. Turns out they still taste like chalk after a few drinks though. This is the kind of place you could come with anyone for any occasion and be happy about your choice. Check it out if you haven't.
