Looking through some reviews, I think some of the other people have described this well: really nice mellow/laidback dive bar. I haven't yet utilized the back patio or been there when they've had music, so I will have to do those things sometime! I've been a couple of times during happy hour and I've always been immediately greeted by a friendly bartender. I've also met some nice customers while there. I didn't order anything super complicated the times I've been there - mostly just vodka-soda with cranberry, stuff like that. I'd try more drinks though as it looks like they have a lot of options. Wanted to find a chill bar that had outdoor seating to bring our dogs. This spot fit the bill with a nice backyard area and a good beer selection. Most of the beers here run from $6-9, which isn't too bad nowadays. Got a couple of draft IPAs and enjoyed the weather outside. No food to speak of but they do allow outside stuff to be delivered/brought in. Overall cool spot and easy to get the bartender's attention. Maybe it was a bad day, but I wouldn't want to come back here. We came in on a Saturday afternoon and it was busy, not too packed, but busy. We found two empty barstools right away and the atmosphere seemed pretty good. Groups of people coming in, random singing, there was even a birthday party in the back corner. The only one who didn't seem to buy into it was the bartender. He looked alternatively angry, frazzled and exasperated. My buddy asked him what kind of bourbons were available and he rattled off a few and trailed off, literally back pedaled away before my friend could even say what he wanted. In fairness, he seemed to be by himself and was doing a ton of prepwork: slicing garnishes, bringing stuff up from storage all while trying to hold the bar down by himself. My buddy asked if there was an issue-we literally just sat at the bar and weren't rowdy or anything he replied a private party was coming soon and he was frazzled which is understandable but I see no reason to be that way with present customers, it might make them not want to return. read more

This is a good bar. I know this because it has all the things I look for in a good bar: 1. Slim Jims. OK, I don't know if I've actually seen Slim Jims in any other bars in the past decade, but I'd be lying to you if it didn't make me happy. 2. Friendly, unpretentious bartenders. They will give you a decent pour of whiskey, chat with you if you're so inclined, good-naturedly joke around with people who insist on using straws (when they could just use their face straws) about their hatred for turtles...you know, the things good bartenders do. 3. A great happy hour ($4 wells, $1 off drafts, M-F until 8 pm), as well as affordable drinks when you've missed out on happy hour. 4. An awesome backyard (although you may want to rock some bug spray). And Ms. Pac Man/Galaga...the sweet flat table games, not the arcade-style. (Now Lowlands is just showing off.) 5. When I come into the bar in the early afternoon, there's a solid chance I'm going to run into old friends, or make some new ones. This is rare in a city this size, but if you encounter it out there in the wild, you're probably in a great bar. Oh, and they are a coffeeshop in the mornings, before it's socially acceptable to be drinking alcohol. They seriously won't even serve you alcohol if you try and buy it, and they frown upon drinking out of the taps when their backs are turned. read more

Only 2.5 blocks away from my apartment, this local bar really feels like a neighborhood establishment/gem with really awesome bartenders, Justin, Jake, Julian, and John (I think those are all the J's), a great beer selection, classic cocktails, and PIZZA AND GRILLED CHEESE! I usually come here after work if I don't feel like facing the music at home...yet, and have a couple of glasses of wine with a pizza or grilled cheese and shoot the shit with my fellow Gowanusans/Park Sloppers. The ambience of the indoor space is cool and lowkey. There's an outdoor backyard space. Place is dog friendly. Good neighborhood bar. Bartenders were friendly and efficient although granted we were 2 of maybe 12 people in the place on a Friday night. Draft list had a few worthwhile things (Weinhenstephaner, Pumpking) which is more or less a prerequisite in this area of Brooklyn, but as someone who lives in an area where this isn't the norm, I appreciated it. Other patrons were also friendly as well. Biggest attraction here is the large outdoor patio. My friend was lame so I didn't get to take advantage of that--granted there were several smokers outside--and was stuck inside. It's not dirty per se, but not really clean either; sort of dingy looking overall especially with the dim lighting. This place is a good place to grab a drink in the no-man's-land known as Gowanus but nothing more. I came here on a "Summer Friday" so we arrived around 4:00PM. It wasn't crowded, but it definitely wasn't dead. The vibe was mellow but the music was fun and quirky. It was a little too dark and loud inside the bar and it was a beautiful afternoon so we sat outside in the backyard at a picnic table and continued to drink wine and beer throughout the evening. Neighborhood bars are a dime-a-dozen in places like Chelsea, Greenpoint and even Park Slope. But as you move to the edges of even the most popular areas of New York, a quiet place to drown your sorrows or hide from the elements in a glass of scotch* become less abundant. And while our area of South Slope has seen a plethora of good bars explode over the last few months (Black Horse, Quarter, Korzo, and Toby's to name a few), those are all up on 5th and 6th Avenues. What are the folks who live on 3rd and 4th Ave to do? Well, it turns out, they should be headed to Lowlands, which unlike Draft Barn down the street isn't a beer mecca, nor is it a good place to watch the game (there are no tv's). In fact, outside of the bartender's collection of tunes, the only thing to do at this dark locale is to drink and talk. That's like every other bar out there in most of America, but it's not like every bar in our neighborhood. And Lowlands is definitely filling a needed niche out this way. Not much in the way of food stuffs, but there are some press-and-eat sandwiches and some smaller things you can order to take the edge off your hunger. Happy hours run from 5-8pm weekdays and from 12pm to 1am on the weekends (and include $1 off drafts and $3 Miller Lite drafts). And, much like Commonwealth, there's a sparse-yet-effective outdoor patio in the back that probably will bug the crap out of the neighbors but will be awesome for some evening imbibing as the nights grow warm. When last week my husband sent me a text saying "New bar opening on 14th & 3rd" I thought for a moment he was pulling my leg. We've lived on this the southerly, lower end of Park Slope for a while now and assumed we would always have to hike it up to at least 5th Ave, if not PPW to find a bar which we dug. I'm excited to say that we have now found a spot, which is close to home and with just the right feel for the neighborhood. We stopped in for a drink on Saturday afternoon and learned that The Lowlands has: Great beer, friendly staff, a relaxed atmosphere, a good happy hour (5pm-8pm M-Sun), records waiting to be spun annnnd a patio. I can only hope that the people who live in and around the area will patronize the heck out of this bar. read more

I heard this place just opened up 2 weeks ago so last Saturday I rolled over there to meet up with some friends and check it out. I was pleasantly surprised: a large, well-lit (by this I mean dimly with expensive light fixtures), comfortable-but-not-divey, with an array of seating options (bar obvs, tables in front, booths in back, large outdoor space with bigger tables), great prices, cute bartenders. Unfortunately by the time I got there I was already pretty drunk so I hope I didn't leave TOO bad of an impression when I asked the bartender/owner if his little brother/other bartender was single. Anyway John was really nice to me and offered me and my gorgeous gal-pals free drinks. She's going to have her birthday party there. I'm excited for this "south-slope-gowanus" spot. I am a potato salad fiend, so I appreciate very much that it is BADASS here (and from Luscious Food, to be exact). But hey, this is mainly a bar, so let's get down to brass tacks (though I could rhapsodize about the excellent sandwiches as well): Lowlands has got everything from reasonably priced cocktails ($6 drink menu on weekends) to Genesee in a can for $2.50, excellent outdoor space, a genuinely friendly staff, a chilled out, zero-drama atmosphere that manages to embody the vibe of the borough without being cheesy about it. And perhaps most importantly of all, this imbibing establishment is extremely close to me, and therefore gets to be awesome by default. If they could someone combine sister bar Abilene and Lowlands together into one powerhouse of a bar, my life would be complete. read more

They have one of the most suburban, welcoming large back patios I've come across across in awhile, a small selection of board games, and a decent beer list that runs the gammut from $3 PBR cans to $6-7 craft brews on tap. They also have a selection of hot pressed sandwiches ($7) and a soft pretezel option ($4). Sandwiches are oddly prepared elsewhere and shipped to them every day so I'm not sure how I feel about that but I hear the pretzel is amazing. Service here was great and the whole vibe of the place certainly made me wish I lived closer. I live a block away from here and never knew about it until I was invited to a birthday party. (What? A "nice" bar on 3rd avenue? There are things other than garbage trucks, auto shops, and Dunkin' Donuts on 3rd?!) My kind of place. Our group had total ownership of the cozy backyard patio with its wooden tables and chairs still fresh enough not to smell of spilled alcohol. Uncrowded, but not in a creepy "what's wrong with this place" kind of way. A warm ambiance, dark woods and red candlelight, perfect for any occasion, more for the late 20, 30-something yuppie crowd of freelancers. Good selection, standard prices. The pesto sandwiches and other finger foods are fresh and amazing. I didn't hear any music in the patio, which was fine with me. A very welcome addition to the neighborhood! Here comes the gentrification. Third Avenue in the South Slope still isn't a hot spot by any stretch of the imagination. But if you add up Lowlands, Tano, Draft Barn, and... the place that is just reopening in El Poblano's old spot, all of a sudden there's something going on. Lowlands is a pretty decent, chill place. Good beer on tap. Friendly bartenders. Turntables and vinyl selection behind the bar. The back yard patio is pretty bare bones, but it works. I enjoyed myself here. The bartender was friendly and helpful with what I chose to drink, and everyone at the bar seemed like cool people. They had a good beer selection, the bar is handsome. I agree with whoever said the barstools are at a perfect height. So often they are not. I didn't get to indulge in the games or try any food, but this is definitely a place I'd like to come back to, or would recommend to anyone who's in the area. It's the type of bar I could see myself hanging out in for a while, just sipping my beer and talking. I don't often feel like that, so it says something.
