Came in here before a Yelp event to kill some time. I live kind of in the neighborhood but on the other side of Ocean Parkway and always wondered about this bar. Usually passed it for other more trendy places down Cortelyou. But man, was I wrong. This place is awesome. Yeah, it gives off seedy English pub, Old Man bar vibes. But super friendly. Super friendly customers. Like it felt like cheers in here and I only stayed for sadly 30 minutes. The one downside is that happy hour ends at 6 but the bartender kindly let me jump in on it when I was like 3 or 4 minutes past. And no one let me tells you let's that happen in Manhattan. Sometimes I get stiffed on happy hours during the middle of happy hour out there. lol. I was also treated to a complimentary shot for it being my first time at the bar. I definitely wouldn't skip on this ever again when searching for a place to grab drinks with friends in my neighborhood. They also appear to be soccer fans if that's your thing. This is the best bar in the neighborhood, just the way I like it, quiet, intimate, with a nice clientele. There are other bars if you want noisy, karaoke, or hipster-central. This place is nice, with a chill vibe, a bar for adults. But they still have screens and get down for soccer. One of the best aspects of the bar are the bartenders who are great: Mike, Diane, and Auld. Auld serves up a great Whiskey Wednesday, where not only you can get 2-4-1 whiskeys (and the opportunity to try whiskeys you would never buy otherwise), but you get excellent suggestions, Auld is definitely expanding my whiskey knowledge and appreciation. Great atmosphere, a nice wooden bar look with an Arsenal leaning, adults engaging in adult conversations. Overall a great spot and my go to spot in the neighborhood! read more

Don't go there, this bar is no good. This bar is filled with Drama. Not only that the Bartender are acting like they are doing you a favor by serving you. On Monday, the Owner who owns 1% started arguing with a friend. He was making her responsible for her male friend's actions and for not tipping (wondering why), threatening her to kick her out if she shows up with them again. Is she really responsible for anyone's actions? Then he started with me, calling me horrible (anti-Semitic) names, and because I did not leave the bar immediately he grabbed my Handbag and through it out on the street. My belongings were falling out and people started taking my stuff, my phone is cracked now. It happened before that the owner called me horrible (anti-Semitic) names, but I was falling for his fake Apology ones before when he said he enjoyed watching the video of me getting beaten up. I am so disgusted with the greening face of the owner because one could tell that he enjoyed what he was doing or what was going on. I was spending my money in that bar for over 10 years. That's how you get treated then. On Monday night, I had at least 3 male ones yelling into my face at the same time, calling me also horrible names. 3 or 4 guys against 1 female! Amazing! Tried to go here once but they were closed on a Saturday afternoon (I was there sometime between 3-5pm). TVs were on but the door was locked. Disappointed but just walked to the bar next door instead. Decided to give it another go around 10p on a different Saturday night. It was open! There were people inside but it wasn't too crowded. It seems like a big space. Although if you want to watch tv you won't want to be in the deep back area. There are two large tvs here, which are predominantly for sports (fine by me). I did notice the 'silent bar' concept immediately and honestly, it really weirded me out. It made the place feel empty. Our voices seemed to echo and it wasn't very comforting. That's just me though - And I do like music. I also like talking, which this is definitely is good for. I get that it's a sports bar, so music isn't really important. I wasn't there for a soccer (football, whatever) game so I don't know what the sound is like for that. Hopefully that fills up the space better. My biggest gripe and the main reason why I'll skip this in the future, is the prices. I know this is nyc and i know rent is expensive. But I'm not paying $7-9 for pint in my neighborhood. I feel this way about some of the nearby bars too. Their cheapest was a $5 can of genny light. Unfortunately you can get $3 cans near by. I get that this place is trying to be kind of classier, neat! Just not for me. Way too expensive with an oddly uncomfortable atmosphere. I love that I have somewhere to go to watch a game but at $7/beer, there's no way I'll sit there drinking for hours. I adore this place, thankfully it's three blocks from my flat! It's the place I go to after work to meet friends, and it's the place I go to to read a book by streetlight, perched on one of the stools by the big windows. The decor is spare and warm, with christmas lights providing most of the illumination (which I love) and a cozy red paint and wood interior. The lack of music (which I REALLY LOVE) was weird and echoey at first, but the space has settled into itself and is now very nice. I always end up talking to a random stranger at the bar, it's just the kind of place. Jimmy, the owner and usually the man behind the bar, is on the quiet side but amenable to a little chat if you engage him. His beer selection is small but very good. I dislike when the TV sound is on but it's a small price to pay. read more

The first time I went the bartender was explaining different cocktails to us (we asked); the second time our bartender seemed to know less than I do (which is not a lot). Both times they were nice. It's a sports bar, but not American sports, and I was perfectly happy there even though I hate sports and games and anything fun. I've had a horrible experience with this pub!! Not only did the staff seem unprofessional -smoking cigarettes while working, I noticed I had a fly in my margarita cup. After telling the server, about this horrific incident he simply went to the back and then I believe he just fished the fly out and gave me back the same drink. Hoped for an Arsenal bar or an Irish bar... Because I see Arsenal supporters and the Irish as my people. I didn't feel that here.The only person who I really connected with was a rapper who I played chess with. Perhaps they had a previous issue with him? I have no idea, I'm intuitive, not physic. So anyway, I wouldn't recommend this bar as you may be expected to follow rules that don't exist back home (or somewhere homely). I imagine there are reasons for this but I don't know them and I just wanted to enjoy the craic. I am generally a peaceful soul who loves pleasantness , Dennis Bergkamp, Paul Merson, Ian Wright and longs for Highbury.. Yet to visit Emirates... Arsenal is in my blood. The worst part was the amount I was expected to tip... Sorry, I am (relatively) poor. I saved for a long time to go to the states and had no idea how much some people would expect from me to exist in their space. It wasn't like that everywhere, but some places killed my soul a little (but it grew back). I didn't think I was anyone's enemy but ended up feeling like I was which was upsetting. I'm really not sure they get Arsenal, Ireland or people like me. I'm not even convinced they get football (that's what we call soccer)... But who knows. Not me. The two stars instead of one are for the fact that some courtesy was shown even though it may well have been forced. Effort is effort, and respect is respect. Has lots of charm, great selection of beers/drinks and really friendly staff. Sounds weird to say it but the bathroom is one of the most unique I've seen in the city (tiled with pennies and interesting wall paper - check it out for yourself). It's located at a cross street, with full length windows, perfect for people-watching while enjoying the cozy ambiance. This is definitely my new go-to place in the neighborhood! read more

Love this place, finally a great pub in my neighborhood. While I enjoy some of the other local bars (sycamore, bar chord) this place just has a cooler feel. It's also the only bar in the neighborhood where I feel comfortable to go by myself to have a pint after work and watch the game. (Whatever game, they have tvs) As far as the no music thing, I like it, forces you to talk to people, and I kind of like not being forced to listen to a bartenders mix on repeat over and over again. My friend and I went there to watch the NBA finals and we were not well received. The white female bar tender, maybe in her late 40s, was very aggressive. We were the only black men there at the time and we felt her aggression had more to do with the color of our skin than anything else. We left in peace and wish her business well. I was unsure of the place when I first walked in. The bartender kinda gave me the fifth degree as to why I was there but it was bc of my sweatshirt and we became friends very quickly. As usual being a female alone in a bar I got the usual attention from guys sitting next to me but they were rude and didn't buy me any drinks, they were more interested in the rugby game on. I ordered a fireball and ginger ale, which was watered down and a fireball shot which was warm. But after a few drinks I expected a huge tab. 2 fireball shots (warm) 2 fireball/ginger ale 1 double fireball/ginger ale 1 Guinness (tasted watered down) Total bill - $35 I would go here again but next time ask they ice the fireball shots and make my drinks a double so it doesn't taste like water and maybe send back the Guinness. read more

Walked in with a friend recently, asked for 2 La Chouffe's. Bartender, "Yeah, well, I'm gonna have to see some ID". We thought, whoa, that was a pretty rude way to ask, but sure - here ya go. Tender took about 5 minutes looking at our ID's, scanning them, looking for any reason not to let us stay. Little did we know... she was trying to do us a favor. She came back with ID's in hand, and brought us our drinks. Then... we looked around us. Two crackheads in the corner, a couple of dogfood lovers in a dark corner on the couch, loud/annoying noises from the arcade, and just a weird crowd overall. My friend and I had to quickly finish up and get out of there... what a S@#$-show. We've given this place many tries... way too many. It's a shame that they have nice beer on tap, because we won't EVER be coming back to drink it. read more

If he's still somehow living in that golden era when treating women like objects made the world oh so swell...it's 2014. Too bad, because my husband likes the place and overall I do too. Generally pretty quiet, which is nice (except for during big soccer games). The crowd is typically calm and very friendly. The bar staff is amazing. Aude in particular is phenomenal. Some reviewers on here have called her rude, which is exactly what she is, if you're a jerk. She's kicked a woman out of the bar who was gay-bashing my husband and I, and she doesn't tolerate misogyny, as no one should. So if you want to be misogynistic to your female bartender, pick a different bar. If you like bars that are welcoming to everyone who isn't a jerk, this is the best spot for a quiet, fairly cheap drink (especially on Whiskey Wednesday!). read more
