I come here often, at leas t 3 times a month. The expanded dining area and bar has really fueled the energy of this place. The wait staff cares and the owner Jeff is usually there and ready to make sure you have great service and food. As you might expect for a place on "main street" Ada above the bike shop, it is filled with local regulars. Skip the cookie cutter national chains and hang out at the Schnitz ! The food here is incredible! I got the special, which was a jambalaya risotto with shrimp and sausage. It was delicious! However, the service here was not very good. When I first walked in, the host was not even looking toward the door and I had to greet him. And we had been waiting awhile so my grandpa went to ask the host how much longer the wait was and the host snapped at my grandpa and made a rude comment about how the host had told me it was going to be a 20 minute wait. Once we were seated our server quickly took our drink orders, which I appreciated. But throughout the rest of the meal she seemed to disappear. This place is always consistent with great food and drinks. Great Happy hour specials. I really think the White Fish Reuben is one of the best fish sandwich in GR. Also, if you want some spicy BBQ the pretzel bun pulled pork is another great choice. A must try is the Meatloaf. We walked in after a long bike ride today for a quick beer...its was like we were aliens! We asked to put our bikes somewhere safe for 30 min and everyone in the place freaked out...no bikes!! Ya, we forgot our lock, but seriously, there was one guy in the place at 3p on Tue. We already heard the food was junk and now we just confirmed the management is too. Our new favorite spot for Happy Hour! Excellent food and service at great prices and the ambiance is fun too! Can't wait for it to be warm enough to sit on the deck. Gluten free options, a great selection of apps to share (ahi tuna is delish!), and fabulous walleye. The drink prices are really reasonable and there are fun choices during happy hour. This should be a good place to watch MSU football in the fall as well as they have lots of TVs. We haven't tried them for lunch yet but we've heard they can't be beat. We stopped in for a quick lunch after Saturday morning soccer, and were pleasantly surprised to find happy hour specials starting at noon in the bar. Our favorite pulled pork tostadas (which had been off the menu for a while) were back! They have house-smoked pork, with avocado butter, fennel slaw and cilantro crema on a crispy tostada shell. So, so good! Mark set us up with an order of these, with a Perrin Black draught, while our daughter happily devoured her BLT from the deli side. Half sandwiches are actually full sized sandwiches, with half the usual meat, which is plenty! She saved the other "half" of her half sandwich for lunch on Sunday. Happy Saturday to us! read more

Another Gilmore restaurant that has wonderful food, casual dining and seems to work well for groups. The Schnitz side serves sandwiches and the Grill side offers finer choices for dinner and lunch. Went there last night for girls night out. Started out with lobster and shrimp crust inis with water cress. attentive service. The owner actually recommended the pork tenderloin for me (which was excellent). Fun atmosphere, great service, and great selection of drinks and wines. There is a wide selection of items on the menu. I had a potato au gratin which was the best I have ever had, plus you can get the sides al carte. Will be back for sure! read more

Although I have been here numerous times, this was my least favorite experience. Ordered the 'cuban' sandwich. The pickles were cut into 1 inch or larger cubes...made the sandwich inedible and terrible looking. What kind of cook or chef would prepare it this way? Answer: an unqualified or lazy one. I wont go back for a sandwich ever, despite any reputation, as such a choice in preparation/presentation tells me the folks there dont know what they are doing. The Schnitz Deli is a great place to grab lunch with a friend although a little pricey. The location is nice and they have a second story patio overlooking the quaint village of Ada (the patio furniture could be better though). Bottom line, I would recommend this sandwich shop to others. read more

Great food but consistently horrible service. I'm a local and anytime someone suggests Schnitz - I give them the eye roll. While the food is always good, the service - from the time you walk in the door until you get your check is consistently bad. Hostess staff is incompetent and rude (this is causal dining!), and the waitstaff is invisible - as is no where to be seen. Took 15 min to get WATER tonight. No matter how much 'feedback' giving to management it never changes. BTW - I've asked around and all the locals agree on this. read more

In all the times I have been here, I have never once been disappointed. I highly suggest the Fish And Chips or Steak Diane. They sadly removed my favorite thing from the menu, my reason for going there as often as I could. The pasta Cobonarra was amazing and I think it was a huge miatake to remove it. Location is the best thing about the the Schnitz. Food is just ok but over-priced. Tried the Reuben which was good but needs more dressing. We also had the prime rib, flavored nicely but dry. I would advise staying away from the wings. They are greasy, lifeless and bland. The worst part Schnitz experience is the service. We were seated quickly in the half empty restaurant but after 15 minutes of waiting and watching the other two tables on the deck get their checks we had to go ask for a server to come to our table. Even after that, it took another 5 for someone to come to our table. She did not apologize for the wait but made us feel like an inconvenience to her plans for the night. Maybe on a busier night the staff would focus less on their social and more on customer service. read more

Two major problems with this location: hostess and bad food. We recently dined on a Friday evening and the restaurant was about half full. The young hostess looked up without a smile or greeting and I asked to be seated on the deck with our group of four. She consulted her chart and said there was no space, even though there were empty tables. I asked to put 2 small tables together and she said No, it violated fire code. My husband looked on the deck and there was an empty table for four. She relented and told another young worker to seat us. Obviously she couldn't be bothered. Long long wait for four sandwiches! Over a half hour. The Cuban sandwich resembled shredded mushy pork, a bit of melted cheese and a pickle on the side. It was not a Cuban that we recognized. And it was so salty my husband left half of it. My turkey bacon avocado grilled wrap had no bacon in it. I opened it up looking, and there was none. The turkey was cold and the wrap had a few grilled marks on it, but it was also cold. Not a good experience. The management needs to educate the hostess on how to be pleasant and whoever was in the kitchen needs lessons on how to prepare food. Never again. read more

This place is great! The seasoning they put on their steaks is to die for. I would suggest you getting the steak salad or ask for their normal steak with the steak salad seasoning. Terrible customer service! Waited 20 min to be snubbed over by a couple that just walked in. I confronted the host and she said it would be another 20 before we could be seated. Called and asked to speak with the manager she told me 'we allow call ahead seating and they called about 20 min ago, but we waited an extra 5 min because they hadn't arrived'. I was not impressed with this answer because there is just a vacant table for 5 min, meanwhile we were left waiting. That is just horrible management! I've been to Schnitz for lunch, dinner, private business meetings and family events (private rental on Sundays). They are easy to work with, and the food is delicious. Atmosphere is adorable. Prices are reasonable. Bar service is excellent. read more

Food was decent, but not as good as it used to be. The sandwich I got was pretty dry. Service was terrible. The cashier serving us stopped in the middle of my order to speak with a coworker - when she returned to my order, she didn't even apologize. Found it very rude. When we were served our food, the server just placed everything at one end of the table without telling which sandwich was which. Workers were not courteous, often busy chatting amongst themselves. Probably will choose a better place in downtown Ada next time. read more

Beware! This place struggles majorly to accommodate parties of more than 4 people. Also, the hostesses will lie and quote you a much shorter wait than what it actually is. Cute, quaint locale in downtown Ada. One side is a deli, the other, a full service dinner restaurant. It's a little confusing when you walk in, because there is a sign that reads, "do not enter kitchen area" but the area is the counter, cash register area with salads in a glass case...so you want to walk up there and order like a regular deli. I was stopped and handed a menu, so oh ok I get a server. That's fine. I ordered chicken salad. I asked for bread. She said then order the sandwich. I said I don't want bacon. She said I couldn't have bread because the dinner bread wasn't cut yet. Ok fine. But I can clearly see a mountain of bread loaves near your deli sandwich makers... Ok whatever. So the chicken salad was mediocre and the server/confused hostess ruined my moment. Great concept... Just need helpful staff that support a solid customer centric mission. If you like chicken salad, go next door to the Nonna cafe before 2:30. It's fabulous! read more

We love this place. Don't be fooled by the description as a deli and coffee bar. You can have a good deli lunch here- it's true. It is our fave local for dinner or for happy hour. They serve consistently good American food with a choice of casual or more upmarket fare. Jeff's meatloaf is delicious but we have had a great risotto with scallops and bacon and other specials that change regularly. They do a nice Black and Blue burger and great choice of salads which you can have with salmon, grilled chicken or shrimp if wanted. We love the calamari which is sautéed with garlic, chilli and fresh avocado. There is always a buzz to the atmosphere and Mark does a great job behind the bar. I have one thing I'd like changed which is the French fries- wish they changed from skinny ones to fat ones. But don't let that stop you trying it. read more
