Breakfast Adventure at The Peppermill Grill in Rockford, MI The Peppermill Grill is a little diner hidden deep in a quiet Rockford neighborhood. If you didn't have Google Maps, you'd probably drive right past it. I finally found it on a cool morning, and when I walked in around 9:15, the place was calm and cozy. Only a few tables were taken, and the locals were chatting over coffee like old friends. The staff was amazing. Everyone was friendly, fast, and made me feel welcome right away. The diner was very clean and had that classic old‑school charm that makes you want to sit and stay awhile. Then came the main event: the All‑American Breakfast with American fries and a "large" chocolate milk. Here's how it all went: * The Chocolate Milk It tasted great--nice and chocolatey--but the "large" size was just a regular glass. I could've easily finished two. * The Eggs Two sunny‑side‑up eggs, cooked just right. They were runny and delicious. Still, I kind of wished there were three. * The Ham They gave me a big piece of ham, so the portion was great. But the flavor was pretty mild. It needed a little more seasoning or smokiness to stand out. * The American Fries These chunky potatoes looked good, but some were undercooked and none had seasoning. They really needed salt, pepper, or something extra to wake them up. * The Toast The wheat toast was buttery and fine, but not very crispy. More like warm bread than real toast. There were a few bright spots, though. The ketchup was top‑notch (pretty sure it was Heinz), and I loved the fancy salt and pepper grinders on the table so I could season things myself. In photos, the plate looks awesome--especially that giant piece of ham--but the taste didn't fully match the picture. The service and the cozy vibe were great, but the food didn't quite hit the mark for me. If you live nearby or want a simple diner breakfast with friendly people, The Peppermill Grill is worth a try. But if you're visiting from out of town, it's just okay. The people are wonderful, but the food needs a little more flavor to make the trip feel special. read more

We came in with a whole baseball team and they were so nice, friendly, and accommodating!! Food came out fast and the ticket system we used was efficient. Food was fantastic and just your good old small town diner! Servers were engaged with the boys and they seemed excited to serve us and not annoyed that a big party of boys came in. Service was good, food was meh, paying was terrible. Breakfast burrito even smothered in sausage gravy was bland - no amount of salt and pepper and hot sauce could save it. The corn beef hash was distrusting mush. JR omelets were surprisingly large and seemed to make the kids happy. Waited in line to pay for a very long time while I'm assuming the owner chatted up a friend about their local golf league. He finally wrapped up his convoy long enough for us to pay and get out. Not sure what l expected from a place with ads on their glasses and coffee cups but I was hoping for something better. I had Scrambled eggs and cheddar ham. A nice portion tasty ham and nicely scrambled eggs. My wife had the Gardener Omelette. It was not as expected. The veggies didn't not appear to be sauté as the menu stated and no cheese. The eggs were thin roll up style. Disappointing. No offer of a coffee refill. Service was average. I've always heard of the Peppermill Grill and their legendary biscuits and gravy but never realized they had a location in Rockford. I met with a friend here before walking around the farmers market. It was pretty crowded right around 9 am on a Saturday but it ended up clearing out while we were there. There are two entrances and both are a little cramped, so there's not a ton of room to stand around waiting. They do have some outdoor seating in the back. The interior is a little run down and the carpet was definitely in need of a vacuum. The table we sat at was uncomfortably close to another large group so we kept bumping chairs as they were getting situated. The dining room as a whole felt pretty cramped and crowded. Our server was very sweet even though she was clearly slammed. I ordered the corned beef hash, somehow I thought it would be homemade based on the menu's description (it wasn't). I don't mind canned corned beef hash but I was really hoping for the real stuff on this particular visit. Oh well, my fault for not asking. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the food was what you'd expect. I wasn't blown away by this place by any means, but it was pretty affordable and quick. I doubt I'd run back here again soon but it seems like one of the few places in Rockford to get breakfast. read more

At first coming to this place the outside of it is very dark and doesn't look open. Went inside and our waitress was lovely. However, when it came to ordering and the food I was rather disappointed. First off, no orange juice during the time of me eating which was a let down. Then we got to ordering, which the food and my Apple juice came quickly which I liked. But on the other hand this meal including my moms meal was not worth the $21 we spent on food. The pancakes were cooked around the edges but not in the center. I only managed to eat a third of them before losing interest in the pancakes. The fruit on top was alright but definitely not fresh. The American fries were also burnt and lacking even the potatoe taste. Not even ketchup could save it for me. My mom only managed to eat some of her French toast before giving up on it as well. I went home hungry and not feeling well after. They did have a sign saying cook in training. But even I who have never been to culinary school or anything have never managed to mess up pancakes and hash browns so badly. read more

Yuck. I was pretty excited to check this place out, as I'm always looking for a good breakfast spot. Two stars because it appeared clean and the atmosphere was fine, but the food was awful. I ordered the Peppermill skillet, and it came out Luke warm on a plate, and everything was mushy. The vegetables were likely frozen veggies that were just thrown on top. The water from them made the potatoes mushy. It was so bland even with a ton of added salt and pepper. The waitress dropped our check with the food, which is fine with me, but never checked back. Would not recommend! We will continue getting our breakfasts at Maxine's in Sparta instead! read more

This is a traditional greasy spoon breakfast. Menu is simple, wait staff is extremely attentive, and it's underpriced. It's a great local spot to meet for work, friends, or take the family. They have limited outside seating and can get busy on the weekends. I'm not one to spend more money BUT the portion sizes are enormous (specifically the omelette) and they are bottom of the barrel pricing. Suggestion- keep the English muffin toast, shrink the portions, or charge more. I'd hate to lose a Rockford gem. read more

This place is right DOWN town. And I mean, DOWN! Once you got into downtown Rockford, you have to go into a hole to get to this place! Not the fanciest place around, but the breakfast was great. The American fries are fabulous, lots of bacon(good thing I'm on cholesterol meds) and the eggs were prepared just as I asked. The only shortcoming was the coffee--I only got one cup. But considering how busy they are, I can forgive them for not getting refills. Everyone there was constantly on the move taking and delivering orders. I'm from upstate but I'll be back. This was such a sweet place to visit and we will be going back. We went here for a girls brunch and we were bummed to find out they don't serve alcohol but the service and food was great! I do like the peppermill grill, but today wasn't good. We were sat promptly and got our order in right away, but that sums up the good. My daughters eggs and bacon were extremely overcooked, I was missing an egg from my Order, I had to flag someone down for more coffee, and ask another waitress for boxes. The breakfast was an easy fix, but our waitress never came back to the table after she dropped off the food and the check. Toast was 1.50, so 16.20 for two items. That's not the "dirt cheap" pricing people talk about. It's pretty typical of non-chain diner prices. The food and portions were better than average. Biscuits covered in lots of peppery sausage gravy, omelette quite large. The gravy tasted like a solid, fresh made gravy, not from a can. The toast tasted like it was from a bag, but anyway it went well with the gravy. The raisin bread toast that came with the omelette was burnt. The service was fine. Everyone was friendly enough, even on a busy Saturday morning with people waiting 15-20 minutes for a seat. Food didn't take very long to come out. Three stars seems harsh, but four stars seems like I really enjoyed a placed. I enjoyed this place, just didn't *really* enjoy it. It's just a breakfast diner type deal, and the prices didn't wow me. So three stars. I'd definitely bring family to this place if they're in town and looking for a safe place to grab breakfast. On our mission to find the best breakfast places around, we found Peppermill on Yelp and decided they were next on our "hit list". If not for Yelp, we may not have found them.. tucked away in the middle of Rockford near the White Pine Trail, Vitale's, and Rockford Brewing. Stopped in early on a Saturday morning and got a seat right away. Not very busy, but lively enough. Ordered a one scrambled egg for our 1 year old- came out quick so we could entertain him! I had the Michigander Omelette and it was good! Tomatoes were fresh, lots of big chunks of bacon (no bacon bits... practically full slices!) and canned mushrooms (that is fine with me!). Nice size and came out quick and hot! Hubby had a the All American and it was a good choice for your standard breakfast plate- no complaints. For us, this is a good option in Rockford. Nothing was Holy Cow Knock Your Socks Off.. but it was solid, good, traditional food. Service was good and food came out quick and hot! read more

This is my Go-To place for breakfast. Been going there for close to 30 years. One thing that has always impressed me is, how fast they have my order on my table. They could be packed, and the order always arrives fresh, hot, and made to order. Their cooks are incredible! And I can't forget to mention that their wait staff is always top notch. I've been a regular customer here for years. Have always had good food and service. Not today. I ordered the American combo, something was wrong with the scrambled eggs. They had a funky taste. Told my initial waitress and they told me no one else complained about them. Was brought a new order. Same issue, they even had a funky smell. Had my mom, who is visiting from Florida, try them and she said the same thing. Told the other waitress and she said, well I don't eat eggs so I don't know but no one else is complaining about them. No apology, no offer to take it off the bill, nothing. Basically made me feel like a jerk for not liking them. You've just lost a repeat customer over scrambled eggs. read more

Wife and I and father in law went for breakfast this morning and due to the small size of the restaurant and Rockford having a color run we had to wait about 15-20 minutes to get a seat which is understandable. No hostess to seat you so you have to kinda be on the lookout for the next open table. The waitress was super nice and for how busy it was we didn't wait very long for our food which came out hot (A good thing). I got the biscuits and gravy with a side order of sourdough toast and was pretty good if you like more sausage than gravy then this is the dish for you! My otger half got the Peppermill Tradition and it was a big breakfast and she liked it as well. Overall had a good experience and will go back. I would recommend it if you are looking for an above average breakfast but just know place is small and may have to wait. read more
