Omelet with toasted bagel
Dominic E.

A great breakfast place with wonderful small town vibes. The servers knew most of the patrons that walked in and it was wonderful to see that. The service was absolutely wonderful and super friendly. On the first day there, the server told us we would love everything about the cafe and that we would be back before we left town...she was right...we came here 3 mornings of our 5 night stay. The food is great breakfast fare. The omelet was perfect, but the pancakes were everything I've ever wanted in pancakes. Get whatever you want, but also GET THE PANCAKES. I tried the blueberry pancakes and the cinnamon roll pancakes. Both were delicious, but I had the cinnamon roll pancakes twice.

Revisited this little gem of a breakfast place after what's been several years and I'm still just as impressed as I was then. Wait times were still long, but the value for the amount you get still remains this restaurants' strong suit. Highly recommend for the bustling atmosphere and coffee that's always topped off.

We walked in and were immediately seating as we did the wait list ahead of time. The inside original area is very vintage, It gives a cool vibe. Our waitress, oh my goodness!! Kershawna, what a sweetheart, and very attentive. I couldn't decide between the Stuffed French Toast, or the eggs and toast. She suggested the Tuesday Morning Special and said they could make the piece of French Toast the strawberry stuffed French Toast. It was absolutely delicious . If you live in the Grand Rapids area, or are just traveling through I highly recommend The Real Food Cafe.

Steak and eggs with sourdough toast and homestyle potatoes

Excellent food. Great steak and eggs and my wife really enjoyed her French toast. This is technically the 2nd time we have had the cafe as we have also tried the Ruben and club sandwich. Also excellent choices. Have yet to try anything below "good" here. Excellent local gem.

Strawberry Stuffed French Toast, pancake, Corned Beef Hash

The food here is a GREAT bang for your buck. I honestly get the strawberry stuffed French toast as my main "entree" every single time, and it has never disappointed. The place is very chill and diner like, yet the food is delicious and high quality. The workers are also very attentive and nice! This definitely is some of the best stuffed French toast around Grand Rapids.

This was such a diamond in the rough to find. It's nestled right next to a wonderful shop which is highly useful when you're waiting to be seated. The place can only hold so many people and it was full when we arrived. We had about a 15 to 20 minutewait which went by rather quickly with the store next-door. We were seated by our waitress and she was pleasantly helpful and talkative. We felt right at home. The interior seating area gives a bit of a retro feel with the seats and tables, reminding me of days gone past at my grandparents house. Even though the place was retro, it was very clean. There are two sides to the restaurant, one being an all table and seating area with the other, having booths and an old-fashioned countertop area. Now the food, amazing! The pancakes were large, light and fluffy. The omelette was one of the best I have had in some time. The only downside was the biscuits and gravy were not very good. The biscuit was hard and the gravy was a bit salty for our taste.

Empty for 11:00 am. Corporate greed!!!
Tim V.

I would say that the corporate greed is greatly evident from today's abomination of customer service and care for employees. We have been been to a few of these locations and today we were faced with even more greed and decline. As I understand this is a business serving customers food as an in person service with door dash. It's apparent that door dash is killing this experience. The restaurant had to shut down in person service and the impact is over an hour wait our food and they stopped seating guests. The restaurant cannot shut down door dash orders because it means too much to the corporate greed. If the restaurant shuts down door dash the corporate managers just turn it back on. They turned away tipping customers to service door dash. I suggest closing the doors all together and build a reputation for just door dash. The experience used to be of more value for the in person guest here. The company should reimburse the staff for all the tips they didn't receive today. I will bet they will not! You can see from the picture the restaurant is nearly empty when normal packed. The over an hour wait for food in an empty restaurant makes you see the real value. Please serve those who are seated versus those who call in an order. Extremely unhappy and disappointed!! Door dash is more important than the in person guests. Empty and watching customers walking out disappointed!!!!

Ask the Community - Real Food Cafe

Do you still charge everyone a certain % to cover higher prices of food that is not considered a gratuity/tip? If so, how much?

I'm not sure. I don't go anymore since they charged me for someone else's bill. It was a $50.00 bill. This isn't the first time, but definitely last.

Is their typically an hour wait on the weekdays as well?

It all depends on your timing and how many in your party. If there are only two of you, probably not but it’s always a possibility. It’s a very popular place.

I adore crab so ordering that was a no brainer. Their coffee is strong. It took a ton of cream to change the color... though it was delicious with free refills for $5. The omelette was heaven. All the flavors melded well and I appreciated the crisp acidic salad to cut the richness of the omelette. My only critique is wishing the crab salad topping was a bit more decadent. For $21 I was hoping for big lumps of crab rather than cool shredded mayo based salad. All in all, I love this place, I love the concept. It was quite busy and was thankful to snag a seat at the bar. The service was friendly and quick. Best hipster establishment I've patronized in a long time. Make a reservation if you have a group or pray there is a seat at the bar. My boyfriend and I stumbled in during happy hour and were happy to grab some cheap drinks, but the main event was the burger! We typically like sitting at the bar as well and chat with the bartender who was absolutely lovely! The dirty martini was okay but I will definitely order something else next time as the olives just didn't hit for me. It's a quaint and quiet spot - you can read that as intimate - since it's not loud or rowdy, so if you want a really sweet date spot, feel free to check this one out! Otherwise, you can just go and have a casual, delicious dinner. Parking is limited with the street parking and it being so close to Monroe Center but you shouldn't have a terrible time finding something, even if requires a parking ramp vs street parking. I'd just recommend a reservation if you are going on a weekend or don't want to wait/sit at the bar!

It was a 45 minute wait today but my friend and I found seats at the bar and got coffee while we waited and we were able to order our food shortly after. Our waiter, Drew, was amazing and knew my friend from being a regular. He checked in on us frequently and made sure our coffee was full while we waited on the food. Since they were pretty slammed, our food took some time to come out but it was worth the wait. I tried the Jamaican jerk chicken frittata that my friend recommended and the spread was beautiful and it was delicious. If you like sweet and savory, this is the perfect dish with chicken and veggies in jerk sauce on top of frittata eggs topped with cheese and pineapple. Yum! The portion size covered the whole plate so I have leftovers for tomorrow! My friend got the steak and eggs and her gf got the hash Benedict. They both have been here before and I see why they went back. I will also be back soon! Other things to note is they have a shared parking lot so this is helpful if you don't want to do street parking. Also I would describe the ambiance as a higher-end diner with great service!

So when my family and I were walking around downtown Grand Rapids and needed a place to eat breakfast, we popped into Social Misfits because their menu is basically 90% waffles. My kids love waffles. Every kid loves waffles. Waffles it is! This is a great restaurant for families (because ... waffles), but also a great restaurant for adults because they have a nice selection of creative cocktails in the evening, and coffee in the morning. Social Misfits is basically waffles, alcohol and caffeine, in that order. When we visited in the morning, the adults opted for coffee (really great black coffee!) and the kids both opted for the Little Lad, a waffle topped with strawberries, blueberries and chantilly cream (basically whipped cream, but a little sweeter and whipped a little longer). Both of my children ate most of their waffle, which is a big thing, considering they usually eat like birds. We also got the Son of a Biscuit, which was a garlic parmesan waffle topped with chicken sausage gravy and a fried egg. You could add fried chicken to the mix for an extra $6 (we did not). This one was fine, but the egg was way overcooked! Oh well. Lastly: We got the Ol' Blue Eyes, a waffle topped with blueberry compote, lemon curd, whipped ricotta and graham cracker crumbs. This one tasted amazing, but there was so much blueberry compote and lemon curd that it made the waffle a bit soggy. I think the chef was feeling generous with the toppings, but homie needed to hold back a tad. Sometimes, a little bit goes a long way! Fifty percent less gloppy stuff would have made this waffle dish 100% better. If you ain't really about that waffle life, then not to worry. Social Misfits also has a few "not waffles" items on the menu, like salads, sandwiches and a couple of bar snacks. But I think if you visit this restaurant, you need to just embrace waffles. There are more than a dozen different waffles on the menu. They're all fun and well-thought-out. Pick one and eat waffles for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Honestly it was an incredible location for a space and had such a great vibe inside. My best friend is a regular at the restaurant and we're hoping to see them more in smaller capacities like when we saw them at the Fulton St. Market. Overall, the food was really good. I like the concept of fast-casual dining without the need to have a server. I think it allows things to feel more casual and allowed for me to be more willing to eat there (obviously in other circumstances lol). I got the horchata hot cakes with some of the papas with ghost sauce. I thought the pancakes were GREAT and more than worth it for the price. I was surprised how large and fluffy they were. The flavor was great without being too sweet and none of the flavors being too overpowering. My friends got the breakfast sandwiches and chaichata drinks and absolutely loved them. My friend loved her drink so much she got two within the span of us eating. I know it's a hard time for local businesses but I'm hoping there are more ways we can still see them around.

Different from the last time I was here but we were told to find a seat upon entering and that when we were ready, we could order our food at the counter. I looked over their menu and found lots of good breakfast taco options, the breakfast burrito I have heard is great, but what really caught my attention was the biscuits and gravy. I was feeling quite ravenous this morning and got the full order for $11 and a side of bacon. They had a table close to the entrance with extra menus, clean cups, water jugs, hot sauces, silverware and napkins. Seemed like a help-yourself vibe which I grabbed everything we would need for our meal. Our food was brought to us rather quickly and my bf ordered the breakfast bowl with scrambled eggs and sausage. He told me it tasted so good and he loved that he could make his own tacos with his food. He let me try one of the hashbrown rounds and it was perfectly crispy! My biscuits and gravy were phenomenal. The biscuits were so fresh and the gravy had a really nice and comforting flavor to it. You could get chorizo and mushrooms in your gravy but i went with a traditional sausage for my protein. My bacon on the side came in a tiny dish but I ate all four pieces haha. Once we finished, there were some bus bins under the same table with the silverware, we placed all our dirty dishes there and cleaned up after ourselves before leaving. I honestly felt so content leaving there and can't wait to return. I really appreciate the ambiance in there with the beautiful plant life, the lights on the ceiling, and cool decor in general. The staff was also SO NICE! Wins everywhere. I also noticed people coming in for takeout which is good to know in case I don't feel like dining in some morning. Please check this place out sometime if you're in the mood for some really good breakfast that doesn't break your bank account.
