You know, it's a shame. My family has been coming to Thornapple Brewing for ten years, religious customers, since the place opened. However, tonight was the night they may have decided to stop giving this beloved brewery their business. I am very disappointed and saddened by the downturn of this brewery- probably due to the change in ownership recently. Here is what happened: we went to celebrate with a large group. We ordered, and for the first time in my life I actually disliked the beer I got. Two others at our table got the same beer, it was bad. I NEVER send anything back, but this drink was terrible (Galactic Space Monkey). Moral of the story, they swapped our beers, but ended up also charging us for the beers they took back to the kitchen without a warning. Ok, no problem, so we asked to speak to the manager. The manager came in a T'd up fashion. No apology, no nothing. He was in a mood - he's a new manager. Nevertheless, he said he had to charge us for the beers that had been sent back to the kitchen, even though they were not drank and replaced. That's not necessarily the issue, instead, it was the unapologetic, defensiveness of the manager that was just a bummer. My family is a nice group of people, and I can't emphasize enough how kind they were about the situation. We will see what happens with Thornapple, it's just too bad. read more

We were staying on 28th Street and decided to check this place out. Chase was our bartender, and he did an excellent job. He let us taste a pilsner beer I was considering, but then we saw the specialty cocktail menu and went with the Petal Punch. The presentation was nice, with a flower on top. The mixture of the vodka-rose-hibiscus and lavender syrup, with lemon juice and soda water was outstanding! Chase was tinkering with using gin instead of vodka for another specialty cocktail and we told him to make our second one with gin and we would provide the taste test. It was also quite tasty. I preferred the vodka, while my friend preferred the gin, so both were a hit. We ordered the Elote Dip as an appetizer. It was a flavorful combination of street corn and sauce that was exceptional. It also came with a handful of chips, but for a price of $13, this seemed a little high for a dip and chips. The bar is spacious and has a nice eclectic atmosphere feel. There are many beer and liquor selections available at this brewery, with many specials and "leaderboard" recommendations, front and center at the bar. This place is a nice stop for drinks, and it gets a pretty good crowd for dinner. We heard the couple at the table behind us tell the waitress that her husband wanted to come back again because the burger was so good the night before! That is saying something! read more

First impression of Thornapple is that it's a fun place to have a beer/cocktail/wine. I went there for food and beer. I tried the nitro stout (4/5 against a Guinness), and their Mosaic Trelis Hazy IPA. I really enjoyed both beer, nice head on the nitro . 3 tings 1) 10 beers or so, cocktails are mixed with their spirits and all have won some awards check that out next time. 2) Place is uge and will accommodate large parties, and big groups. Bring in your party their a fun gang and there plenty of space. 3) Had 12' pizza which was well topped (I built my own) and it had plenty of toppings. I will say that the crust is premade so that my only gripe but it's a beer place not a pizza place. read more

The servers were attentive, we constantly had full drinks, though the restaurant was a little chilly (likely due to the arctic freeze and that there were only about 6 patrons there at the time). The food was good; however, the lunch options are EXTREMELY limited so I can see why there weren't many people there. Would try again at dinner for the more extensive menu options. read more

Don't get over this way nearly as often as we used to but the wife and I had a meeting on this side of town and stopped in for lunch. Our server was great, he practically had the whole room and bar by himself though someone came out later and assisted but service was still great and timely. He brought me out some special hot sauces on request and gave us some feedback on dishes. The food was great we got the spinach dip appetizer and then my wife got a chicken sandwich and I got a burger with fries. Main dishes were great the dip was solid too but a little bit smaller for an appetizer. I was sad too that it looked like the cheese curds were taken off the menu, maybe it'll come back again. Always a great spot and lots of good drink selections too (I got the mango habanero cider and my wife got the classic ginger peach cider- yum!) we'll be back and probably try a pizza again because that's one of their staples and the ones coming out looked delicious (we just had it recently though). read more

The beer was terrific. My wife and I got the Menace and the Hazelnut Imperial Stout--both were excellent. We also tried the Bourbon Barrel Gin. It was so good we bought a bottle to go. The food was tasty too. We got a white, veggie pizza and it was great. Great veggies and cheese balance. We also got two apps: crab Rangoon and artichoke spinach. Both were really good too, but they were a little too smooth with no perceptible crab or artichoke in them. But the flavors worked, so first world problems. The service was terrific and the setting was very chill. Would go back 10/10 times. read more

Wasn't too crowded on a Mon night but sounds like it gets packed with live music on other nights. I sat at the bar. So enough pleasantries, what about the beer and food, Andy? Well OK. *Beer- I had the Mosaic Trellis NE IPA and it was really tasty. Riding the hazy IPA wave *Food- had the bacon burger and man, was it good! Greasy and delicious on a good bun. *Atmosphere- they were playing classic rock -Rush, Boston, Pink Floyd instead of normal hipster bs which was really cool and at a low volume. We were only drinking on this trip, but I was the drinks were pretty worth the trip. I had the Sriracha Sayonara cider, and it was the perfect flavor of sweet and spicy. Although it had a spicy taste, it didn't really have a spicy burn (it didn't taste hot). My fiancé had the jalapeño margarita, and it tasted yummy, but if you would've told me there was no booze in it, I probably would've believed it It tasted very much like lime sour and not much like jalapeños or like tequila. We also had their version of an Oktoberfest, and I thought it was the best Oktoberfest I've ever had, but my fiancé felt it wasn't as heavy as it should be. Overall, service was great, drinks were like a 3/5. I've heard their known for their pizza, so I'll definitely have to come back to try that. read more

I'm writing this as my boyfriend is driving us home from eating there. As much as I want to say that it was as good as I remember it being, it wasn't. The pizza was undercooked and the bread sticks were honestly not the best. My boyfriend got a cherry coke (coke with grenadine) and it tasted like straight grenadine. Our server started off nice but as the night progressed she decided it was a good idea to flirt with my boyfriend and would only address him. My husband and I visited Thornapple Brewing originally for a drink, which went well and we even bought a pint glass to take home. The next visit we ordered the hipster and ended up coming back a few days later because it was so good. We loved the hipster pizza and pickle chip app. The mosaic trellis beer is delicious as well. The service is very timely regardless of the crowd. The food comes out super fast, fresh, and hot, so beware - you might end up burning your mouth. 10/10 recommend. read more

First off, the food and beers were incredible. We had some great dishes--the dip platter and the TBC Bread Bites were standouts. The pizza was a bit off, but still enjoyable. They were out of the smoked brisket sandwich, which our waitress said is made fresh daily outside. Since it was raining, that made sense. The atmosphere was great too, with plenty to do--pool (out of service, but looked like it was actively being repaired), darts, bags, arcade games, and more. The only real downside was the service. Our waitress was rarely around and brought us what looked like dirty water cups. Her attitude gave off major "I don't care" vibes. Our daughters were playing in a volleyball tournament and we wanted them to have a nice lunch with time for the food to settle before playing. We thought 2.5 hours was enough time. We were wrong. We arrived at noon and got seated right away. Our orders weren't taken until almost 1:15and no food arrived until 1:45. Orders weren't all correct, bills were wrong, and some food was room temperature. For the ENTIRE restaurant and bar there were only two servers. That is completely unfair to those two workers. My friends and I made a reservation for dinner in one of their outdoor huts for a Saturday night. We arrived at 6:45 when our reservation was and the hut was not ready for us and we had to wait about 15 minutes to sit. I love the idea of the huts and igloos for outdoor dining but this one did not live up to my expectations. It was heated well (we all brought a blanket for ourselves as well) and there was plenty of space for 3 people inside which was nice but their lights weren't working so we were basically sitting in the dark aside from the light of the heater. Our server was definitely speedy and I appreciate that but it almost felt uncomfortable at times. Every time he left the hut he slammed the door (probably unintentional but we couldn't help but laugh every time because of how awkward it was), and every time we got water or a drink served to us, they spilled a little over on to the table as he was serving. As for the food and drinks, the pizza was really good. I had the Hawaiian, one of my friends also did but got vegan cheese instead on hers (awesome that they have that option), and my other friend got the granny goat which looks delicious. We all liked our pizza and each got 2 servings out of it. We also tried 2 of their seasonal cocktails, the spiced cider (sweet cider with spiced rum and a cinnamon stick) and the peachy warm (warmed peach cider). Both were tasty but I preferred the peach cider. Overall, I would definitely order food from here as take out but I'm not sure I will be back for dining in. read more

For some reason the atmosphere here reminds me of Grand Traverse Pie Company. Not a bad thing just is. Kind of an open industrial feel. I ordered a Spiced Cider ($8), the Whiskey BBQ Wings ($10), and 8 Crab Rangoon Pizza ($17). The Cider was ok, I drank about half of it. Should have just got regular cider. The wings were good. The whiskey flavor was stronger than the bbq flavor. They were cooked well. The Crab Rangoon Pizza was good but nothing special. The flavor was very subtle. I wouldn't order it again, but it wasn't bad by any means. The service was slow, but friendly. There was a 15 minute wait to be seated that was fine. However there was a long wait to receive drink, then to order, then for food, and lastly for to go box and bill. They were busy, but service should have been better. Overall a 3 1/2 star review, that I'm upgrading to 4 stars. Would I return? Probably only if someone else wanted to go. read more

This was our first visit. We went after a flight home. The place was empty but the service was still attentive not annoyed by us being there It is very comfortable inside and has outdoor seating , which allows for dogs. We shared the Traverse City pizza on gluten free crust. It was delicious. We also had a winter old fashioned. That drink was amazing! They have a lot of ciders, beers, and wine as well. We went after dinner so didn't sample the food . The music was good and the beer tasty , the spirits really lacking in taste and complexity. The vodka seems like it needs to be filtered more , with quite a burn , the bourbon is young and needs more barrel time . The brandy has a nice start but an after taste that made it hard to sip . When walking in, there seemed to not be too many people dining in. That was totally fine with us. The ambiance of the restaurant was super inviting, very clean, and gave off a fun vibe! But the food is the start of this show! I ordered the Brisket sandwich - 10/10! Sooooo good!! The kettle chips were just kettle chips. The brisket had so much flavor and the au jus was the perfect amount. My husband had the Mojave burger On to the main event: the KRAB RANGOON PIZZA! This was what made us decide to go in. It was DELICIOUS. I've never had a pizza that was so creamy and flavorful. It had all the components of a simple crab rangoon, sweet and sour sauce drizzled on top too! This pizza was a 1000/10.
