Had to drain the liquid from my garbage plate! Yuck
    Ethan W.

This was a terrible garbage plate and the it saddens me because the Schaller's Brighton location on west Henrietta road is my favorite plate in Rochester. The plate at this location was so soggy I had to drain the liquid into a cup. The meat sauce was basically tasteless and so was the macaroni salad. The only thing edible at that point was pretty much just the hot dog. Sad to say the staff were very unprofessional as well in front of customers; adding on to the poor experience. I rarely ever write reviews and don't like being negative but I needed to relay the warning. Do yourself a favor and go to the Schaller's Brighton location on west Henrietta road!

    Schaller's, an Irondequoit legend.

I have been going to Schaller's for many many years on and off. Yesterday I stopped by for a burger. I love Schaller's burgers. It was approx. 2:00, lunch time slowed down. A nice waitress promptly took my order. :) While standing at the counter, one of the oldest employees, the gentlemen with the beard (maybe the manager) came over and said hello to me. He's known me as a customer for a long time. A great guy, he is definitely a pillar of the Schaller's society. Anyways I had their famous burger and enjoyed it. Schaller's is always "clean", the "service" is great!!! :)

I found that Schaller's is pronounced Shay-lers. Why did nobody ever tell me? I've been embarrassing myself calling it Shall-ers this whole time. I'm going to cry now. Excuse me. Now that I know it's Shay-lers, I just need to figure out if it's named after Shay Given the Premier League goalkeeper in the UK, or a former friend of mine in Los Angeles (Shay Sights, lol) who was married to Nick (not from Tahou's) and, er, made adult movies with him. And with other people. With lots of people. As you might imagine. But let's get on with the review, Schall we. What to order: Amazing Burger with extra meat sauce. What else: white hots, ground round. If it were Shea-llers, it would be owned by Mets fans. By the way if you ever go to Shea Stadium, some of the best food in the USA is within a few miles of that place, in Queens. Of all the "Rochester institutions" (Steve T's, Nick Tahou's, Bill Gray's, Don's Original), this one is probably my favourite. Their burger is just something else. I'm not the only one that thinks so. My travel companion is addicted to them too, and she doesn't even like burgers. I prefer the location by Lake Ontario, and maybe the one in Brighton, but all three are good. If it were Shia-llers, it would be owned by Mr. Labeouf. However you spell it. I came to this location yesterday. It's my least fave of the three locations mainly because I don't like the decor as much, and maybe the meat sauce slightly less, but it's still awesome as all three Schaller's are. The Italian Ice was rock solid, so I recommend avoiding it. The White Hot was pretty good but maybe not as good as the ones I've had at the other two locations. If it were Sure-lers, then employees would answer "sure" sarcastically to everything you say. Oh wait, they do. When I come (so to speak), I get the Cheeseburger (which is known as the Cheeseburg) with extra meat sauce. We're talking about a tasty spiced patty with greasy juicy hot delicious meat sauce and bits of onion smothering the whole thing. Ask for "everything, with extra extra extra meat sauce." In addition, it's on a bun that simply has to be described as one of the best-tasting burger buns on earth. Possibly from Martusciello's? If it were Shore-lers, it'd be the location by the Lake, and it's not, sadly. Altogether, it's the perfect fast food burger. The ultimate. The best one in WNY - and one of the best in the country. Right up there with Powers of Fort Wayne and Town Topic of Kansas City and the Galley Boy of NE Ohio's Swenson's and the burgers at Cook Out of North Carolina. If it were Shoeless Joe Jackson's, well then, Kevin Costner would own it. He built it, and they came. This location is newer, but it doesn't look much newer than the lovely original up by the Lake. If neither one is convenient for you, then there is one down in Brighton, which is my 2nd fave, the original is my fave. I've been to all three and they were excellent. How often does that happen? If it were Sham-lers, then it wouldn't actually sell any food. They'd lure you in with promises of food and then rob you. Or is that Scam-lers? If you're a Rochesterite who hasn't tried this burger lately - or ever... or if you're an out-of-towner in Rochester for a day or a few days... come here and be amazed. Please don't forget to ask for the extra meat sauce. If it were Share-lers, there would be no upcharge on sharing a burger with someone. Oh wait, there is no upcharge. Nm. By the way, they have good White Hots too. A White Hot is basically a Zweigle's "Brat" type sausage, cut in half, on a bun, with onions, and completely smothered, covered, dripping in meat sauce. But at this location you have to ask for extra extra extra meat sauce to really get it dripping... lol. They're really very good, and about one-eighth the size of a Garbage Plate, so perfectly sized for a snack. You probably already know what a GP is. If not, then see my Nick's review. They're enormous and so bad for you. And if it were Shyla-ers, then it'd be named after another girl I know from when I lived in LA, from Armstrong in British Columbia, who expertly does the same thing for a living as the girl I talked about in the first paragraph. Why do I know all these people. Don't ask.

Nice place to visit for lunch.
    Scott L.

Great place and a definite stop if your in Irondequoit.. Schallers has been a staple for over 50 years. Great burgers, the famous Schallers plate and milkshakes. Great time to catch up with friends. You will not go away hungry. Please check them out. Thanks to the Shaller family for the great memories and food.

Schaller's plate -- cheeseburger on top of French fries and Mac salad
    Mindi A.

If your looking for 1950s greasy lunch plate, this is your place! Don't come here if you are looking for something healthy. I decided to order the Rochester Schaller plate. It has half the plate covered in French fries and the other half with macaroni salad and then they place a burger or hot dog (your choice) on top, no bun. The burger is fried crispy but the fries were a little soggy. While I was sitting and eating, I overheard people order their fries well done-- note to self for my next visit. Their menu is very customizable and most items are sold ala carte. Feeling a burger and a hot dog with fries? Done. What about 3 hot dogs with macaroni salad? Done.

My martini was perfectly mixed and ice cold! The food was phenomenal as well. I enjoyed the lobster risotto appetizer, chicken thigh with polenta and a delicious and complex mole sauce, and butterscotch pot de crème for dessert. The bar was bustling when I arrived, but quieted towards the end of the evening. The restaurant has high ceilings and an upscale but comfortable feel. I'd absolutely return to Redd if I'm ever in Rochester again!

I finally had the opportunity to eat out at REDD for a friend's birthday a couple of weeks ago…read moreafter years of trying to come. I really have to say - for the most part, the wait was worth it. First and foremost, I have to call out their drink menu - while ultimately we came to enjoy a nice dinner, their cocktails were by far the biggest star of the show, with our entrees trailing very closely behind. If you like to partake in alcoholic beverages, I can say without a doubt these are the best cocktails I've had in Rochester, let alone all of Western NY, and this is even put up against drinks from the likes of Cure, Bitter Honey, and Avvino. I don't know if the bartender is just using higher quality spirits as a result of REDD being an upscale restaurant, but the "Burn after Reading", "Wise Guy", and Manhattan are some of the smoothest, most delicious, multi-noted drinks I've had in my entire life. If I don't come back for the food, I will absolutely be back for the drinks, because my goodness, abso-freaking-lutely phenomenal. My friends and I still talk about them now even weeks later. For our entrees we had the NY strip steak, grilled chicken, and a poached salmon, and every single piece of protein was cooked just perfectly. The steak was a beautiful warm medium rare, the chicken was glistening with succulent juiciness, and the poached salmon which I had for my main is one of the softest pieces of fish I've had in my life. It beautifully flaked away on a bed of potato puree and extremely well herbed and seasoned home fry-like potatoes that were ever-so-slightly just-undercooked intentionally to act as a perfect foil to the gorgeously soft puree and salmon itself. If I were to knock anything at all, the winter squash, turnip, and green vegetable medley that came with the chicken and steak was unfortunately far too undercooked for my liking, almost to the point of being completely raw, and while I appreciate letting vegetables sing and respect the beauty of raw, fresh vegetables, I was hoping for a little bit more of chef-y flair, seasoning, or even cooking of them. Besides that, the wait staff was simply top tier and were extremely inviting throughout the entire evening. We felt taken care of and checked up on often and they were the utmost professional. The only thing that was a true negative was the desserts -- if there's one thing I would NEVER order at REDD again, unfortunately our dessert missed the mark entirely. My best guess is due to lack of a pastry chef, but our chocolate tart was muddy and flavorless, not even tasting of chocolate, and the two homemade ice creams we tried - chocolate, and oatmeal followed in suit. We ultimately wrapped up at REDD but then ran down to Char Steak & Grill at the Strathallan for what ended up being a phenomenal dessert experience there. But overall, I have to say - I will definitely be back! The entrees were awesome, the cocktails were life-changing, and the ambience and wait staff were without fault. Thank you for a wonderful experience, REDD, and see you again soon!

I enjoyed mine, but my dining companion's (the Saturn) tasted like straight juice. With dinner, I wanted to get a draft beer and was able to sample the two IPAs. While one was tasty, I didn't order one because the beer was lukewarm. I got a burger, and companion got the black cod. The burger is $32 and a full pound and served with a heap of fries. For the price, less than impressed. The overly thick patty was just too much. It was dry and just not for me. I would rather have two well-seasoned and juicy thinner patties. The fries and sauce were good. But not $32 worth of good. The cod itself was decent but it came in a sauce that was cold and odd tasting. Ambiance is fine. It was loud and crowded, but clean. Service was friendly.

Our waiter Philip was very knowledgeable on the wine selection and helped with the food order. We started out with the Flour City bread, which was toasted and had a dip of whipped ricotta with butternut squash - excellent! Next, we had the salt and pepper squid - their version of a fried calamari appetizer - also excellent with a nice little spice that snuck up on you a little bit. We followed that with the farm salad, which had a great cranberry vinaigrette. Then we had mussels which were over a jasmine rice that had a great sauce with it. The last dinner item we had was the butternut squash ravioli - so tasty! The table next to us got the fries, which was a huge mound of french fries with Parmesan cheese and I think something else on it. It was a lot of food. The waiter suggested their desserts, which was a choice of a huge slice of carrot cake or a skillet baked chocolate chip cookie or brownie topped with vanilla ice cream. Unfortunately, it turned into one of the worst restaurant experiences. We spent 2.5 hours total at the restaurant. After waiting an excessive amount of time, we watched two tables that arrived at least an hour after us receive their food first. When we politely asked if our ticket might have been missed, we were told those tables ordered before us, which simply wasn't true. We were then told the delay was because burgers take a long time but a nearly two-hour wait for a burger is pretty wild. It took about 25 minutes just for someone to take our drink order, and we were never asked if we wanted additional drinks. We had to flag staff down for everything. No ketchup, no hot sauce, nothing offered. The $30 mimosa flight served in tiny glasses also felt like a complete scam. When the food finally came, two people in our party were served 15-20 minutes before the other two, and the food was cold. One dish had completely raw eggs. When I let the server know I couldn't eat it, she came back and removed the meal from the bill, which was appreciated. However, the interaction itself felt tense and dismissive, which made an already frustrating experience worse. They did give us a round of breakfast shots to try to help pass the time which was appreciated. The food itself was disappointing overall. The breakfast burrito was basically all eggs with raw, bitter avocado, and my husband's burger was missing requested toppings. We also noticed food sitting in the service window while we continued waiting. The only person who was happy with their meal got the biggie fries an it was hot when it arrived. To make matters worse, the bathroom was unheated on an 18° day (feels like 2°) and not clean. We're a pretty chill, patient group and understand that kitchens get backed up but man, this experience completely missed the mark. Ironically, the cooks thanked us for our patience and servers said goodbye pleasantly on the way out. We honestly may have let a lot of this go if the service hadn't felt so dismissive when we calmly raised concerns.
