Haven't been here in about 20 years. It used to be really good when I was a child. It smelled good from the outside. We were just looking for a good quick bite to eat. We got 2 cheeseburgers, a mac salad,1 regular fries, 1 bottled soda, and 1 small fountain drink. When we placed the order we told the girl behind the counter what we wanted on the cheeseburgers when placing the order. When they were really the girl asked what comes on the cheeseburgers? Mind you there was only 1 other person who ordered after us. Our order was to go. We had already left the restaurant. The cheeseburgers were actually not bad. Had the charlboiled look on them however they were not cooked all the way through. The fries had not seasoning on them, they were cold, and were also not even cooked all the way through. The mac salad was also very plain with no flavor. Now onto the cost of this order. 2 cheeseburgers were $14.00. Average price for 2. They give you a very small portion of mac salad not much bigger than a dime cup charging $5.10. That right there is very overpriced especially with no flavor. Just gross. 1 order of regular fries is $5.40 which is also overpriced. 1 small bottled soda was $3.49 again over priced, as well as a small fountain drink for $3.10. Got a Texas on a hard roll. It was a stick hot dog was not a Zweigle, very disappointed. Onion rings were over cooked / burnt. Not going back there anytime soon. Spent almost 30 dollars. Hopefully the cheeseburger and mozz sticks are good. But totally discussed with the hot dog. Ballpark would of been better than whatever they served. Schaellers should be ashamed of themselves for passing that crap off as a hot dog. This was a terrible garbage plate and the it saddens me because the Schaller's Brighton location on west Henrietta road is my favorite plate in Rochester. The plate at this location was so soggy I had to drain the liquid into a cup. The meat sauce was basically tasteless and so was the macaroni salad. The only thing edible at that point was pretty much just the hot dog. Sad to say the staff were very unprofessional as well in front of customers; adding on to the poor experience. Burger on a hard roll with hot sauce, mustard, easy on the onions - fries well done with a side of gravy. Pickles to go. Nobody does it like Schaller's. I can order the same thing at Tom Wahl's or Bill Gray's and watch the insides of my burger fall out all over my fingers onto the plate as the soggy bun falls apart. The napkins I go through. I could eat Schaller's every day. They always get my orders right. I have been going to Schaller's for many many years on and off. Yesterday I stopped by for a burger. I love Schaller's burgers. It was approx. 2:00, lunch time slowed down. A nice waitress promptly took my order. :) While standing at the counter, one of the oldest employees, the gentlemen with the beard (maybe the manager) came over and said hello to me. I have been meaning to add a recent review for Schaller's for months............ And finally tonight after devouring a whole order of fried mushroom~(before arriving home with our takeout order) I decided I'd better do it now. They have the best fried mushrooms, burgers,fish fries~shoot everything is always mouthwatering. As for accuracy I need to be honest and say more often than not the orders have an error. Either something is missing or special requests made on phone orders arrive wrong. If you dine in, they almost always get it right or if not, you are close enough to have the error fixed/replaced. I found that Schaller's is pronounced Shay-lers. Why did nobody ever tell me? I've been embarrassing myself calling it Shall-ers this whole time. I'm going to cry now. Excuse me. Now that I know it's Shay-lers, I just need to figure out if it's named after Shay Given the Premier League goalkeeper in the UK, or a former friend of mine in Los Angeles (Shay Sights, lol) who was married to Nick (not from Tahou's) and, er, made adult movies with him. And with other people. With lots of people. As you might imagine. But let's get on with the review, Schall we. What to order: Amazing Burger with extra meat sauce. What else: white hots, ground round. If it were Shea-llers, it would be owned by Mets fans. By the way if you ever go to Shea Stadium, some of the best food in the USA is within a few miles of that place, in Queens. Of all the "Rochester institutions" (Steve T's, Nick Tahou's, Bill Gray's, Don's Original), this one is probably my favourite. Their burger is just something else. I'm not the only one that thinks so. My travel companion is addicted to them too, and she doesn't even like burgers. I prefer the location by Lake Ontario, and maybe the one in Brighton, but all three are good. If it were Shia-llers, it would be owned by Mr. Labeouf. However you spell it. I came to this location yesterday. It's my least fave of the three locations mainly because I don't like the decor as much, and maybe the meat sauce slightly less, but it's still awesome as all three Schaller's are. The Italian Ice was rock solid, so I recommend avoiding it. The White Hot was pretty good but maybe not as good as the ones I've had at the other two locations. If it were Sure-lers, then employees would answer "sure" sarcastically to everything you say. Oh wait, they do. When I come (so to speak), I get the Cheeseburger (which is known as the Cheeseburg) with extra meat sauce. We're talking about a tasty spiced patty with greasy juicy hot delicious meat sauce and bits of onion smothering the whole thing. Ask for "everything, with extra extra extra meat sauce." In addition, it's on a bun that simply has to be described as one of the best-tasting burger buns on earth. Possibly from Martusciello's? If it were Shore-lers, it'd be the location by the Lake, and it's not, sadly. Altogether, it's the perfect fast food burger. The ultimate. The best one in WNY - and one of the best in the country. Right up there with Powers of Fort Wayne and Town Topic of Kansas City and the Galley Boy of NE Ohio's Swenson's and the burgers at Cook Out of North Carolina. If it were Shoeless Joe Jackson's, well then, Kevin Costner would own it. He built it, and they came. This location is newer, but it doesn't look much newer than the lovely original up by the Lake. If neither one is convenient for you, then there is one down in Brighton, which is my 2nd fave, the original is my fave. I've been to all three and they were excellent. How often does that happen? If it were Sham-lers, then it wouldn't actually sell any food. They'd lure you in with promises of food and then rob you. Or is that Scam-lers? If you're a Rochesterite who hasn't tried this burger lately - or ever... or if you're an out-of-towner in Rochester for a day or a few days... come here and be amazed. Please don't forget to ask for the extra meat sauce. If it were Share-lers, there would be no upcharge on sharing a burger with someone. Oh wait, there is no upcharge. Nm. By the way, they have good White Hots too. A White Hot is basically a Zweigle's "Brat" type sausage, cut in half, on a bun, with onions, and completely smothered, covered, dripping in meat sauce. But at this location you have to ask for extra extra extra meat sauce to really get it dripping... lol. They're really very good, and about one-eighth the size of a Garbage Plate, so perfectly sized for a snack. You probably already know what a GP is. If not, then see my Nick's review. They're enormous and so bad for you. And if it were Shyla-ers, then it'd be named after another girl I know from when I lived in LA, from Armstrong in British Columbia, who expertly does the same thing for a living as the girl I talked about in the first paragraph. This location was so disappointing. My husband and I ordered garbage plates and instead got some wet, soggy concoction. It was almost like we took it scuba diving with us and ate it on the way down to the bottom of the ocean. The mac salad and meat sauce had no flavor, whether it was because it was washed away in the sheer volume of liquid, or it didn't have it to begin with, I'm not sure. Schaller's is just about 2 miles from my house but i've only been here a handful of times since moving to Irondequoit. The atmosphere inside is somewhat tired and bland...dated brown tile, beige walls and orange booths make it a bit uninviting. The menu is mounted behind the counter in those letters that you click into a track. It might as well be printed because not much has changed since it opened decades ago. The customers largely seem like regulars, with friendly hellos exchanged with knowing counter workers. On this occasion I ordered an Italian sausage with everything, onions, peppers, hot sauce, and mustard. It was beautiful to look at and the toppings made for a great accompaniment, though I prefer my hot sauce a bit more spicy. Unfortunately the patty, while large, was pounded very thin, and I suspect overcooked, as it was kind of tough and not all that flavorful. The toughness made the already sloppy toppings spill out all over as I tried to bite into it. Sweet potato fries were fresh from the frier and tasty, but, as sweet potato fries often are, not quite crisp enough on the outside to stand up to even a light dipping. Service is friendly and courteous. The thin paper plates are barely enough to hold the sandwiches, and once you start tearing into your sandwich, a bigger sturdier plate to hold all those delicious fall offs would be appreciated. The napkins are those tiny thin cheap ones that you need 40 of just to make it through your lunch. Here again, something more substantial would seem to make sense. All in all, a decent place that could easily be improved with a few small tweaks. read more

This is a diner type restaurant with walk-up counter service. When I 1st walked in, the gal at the counter asked me what'll I have? I let her know I was a newbie, and backed away a little bit to read the overhead menu. I finally decided on a cheeseburger meal with a vanilla malt. The meal consisted of a hamburger patty with swiss cheese melted, atop of fries and mac salad, with a dinner roll on the side, all in a carryout type styrofoam container. Plastic knife and fork were provided, all resting on a plastic serving tray. My malt was in a disposable cup, lid and straw provided. I sat at a booth and noticed the windows could use a good cleaning. Other than that, the place was spotlessly clean. They have parking in front and a huge parking lot out back. read more

Im a native of Western Monroe County, and now live in Washington state. Aside from my family there are few things in the Rochester area that are worth a visit each time i go home, Schallers is a priority, or rather, "was" a priority. Now, this review will NOT slam Schallers as I still prefer them over Bill Gray, or Nick Tahoe. BUT....I was shocked. Schallers staff is STILL a standard in the business. They can handle a rush like no one else and i really mean that. I have burgers everywhere I go, from Rochester to Hawaii and they still stand out in the business. This i give them praise for. Schallers pickles, and fries are great. The hard roll and hot sauce are still THE reason I go. HOWEVER... something has changed since my last visit. What happened to the meat? I mean...Im glad my cell phone died and I couldnt take the picture of my Italian Sausage, which still falls off the bun, but is now as thin as a packaged beef jerky. I really thought most about this, and since the real chance of my being back anytime soon isnt good, I chose to not ask about this when i was there. My dads burger looked the same. I have to consider if Schallers has to be a part of my next visit? Sadly, chances arent good. This is my chance to make the plea, please fix this. It has half the plate covered in French fries and the other half with macaroni salad and then they place a burger or hot dog (your choice) on top, no bun. The burger is fried crispy but the fries were a little soggy. While I was sitting and eating, I overheard people order their fries well done-- note to self for my next visit. I can't describe how disappointed I was . Not only did my family and I come home and spend most of our time in the bathroom but , the service was awful . The girl with dreadlocks , taking my order , was just staring at me with the most dead confrontational stare I've ever seen . Stopped here today while in Rochester and it was very disappointing. As soon as we walked in it smelled like old grease BAD, we decided not to eat any food there for that reason. I did get my daughter an ice cream cone but one very small scoop was $3.25. Also my sister was with us but alone and no one ever asked for her order even though she stood at the counter after we paid for the ice cream which is crazy since there were like 8 or 9 people in there working and standing around with no other customers inside. Love Schallers!!!!! My fiance is from Rochester and this is his favorite place. Everytime we visit Rochester for the holidays, Schallers is a MUST!!! You're right... it is old school and alot of grease but its also a piece of history in Rochester. You can't find any other place like Schallers! It well worth it to visit here. You MUST try it at least once... if you dont like it then we part ways. Whenever I go to Schallers, I always get a redhot! (Hot Dog) With a side of meat sauce!! I top it off with a little ketchup (you serve yourself ketchup in those little plastic cups) and some of their homemade pickles. I always get the Onion rings but my fiance always gets fries and a hamburger with everything (onions, mustard and meat sauce). I've heard the milkshakes are really good also but I've never had one there. The only downside= Its a little strange when you first walk in. They try to keep it old school by not having the cashier's write down your order- so the cashiers are expected to memorize the order. Which was fine in the 1960's b/c they only had hamburgers or hot dogs...... but now they have SOOOO much more. When you order as a big party, you'll have to sum it up for them. (i.e 2 hamburgers w/ everything, 3 red hots with meat sauce, and 1 white hot plain and 4 orders of fries) Otherwise the cashier will keep coming back to ask you what you want on it and the order will be screwed up. Recently visited this location for an early lunch. I was their first customer for the day and there were only a couple customers that trickled in while I ate (although the staff said that it typically gets busy late in the morning). Similar to Bill Grays or Tom Wahls, this is a typical Rochester "burger and fries" dining experience. If you had a burger from one these 3 places, it's going to be about the same at the others. I did enjoy the older decor - being the nostalgic sort, it was cool to see most of the menu done with hand-placed letters and what look like original booths and stools. The food was good and I am glad I got there early enough to have a quiet lunch. read more

What a disappointment I ordered a hamburger on a hard roll w / everything 1 order of fries and an order of onion rings small soda 13.99. The burgers were over cooked. The fries were half the size from what I remember and the onion rings had maybe 8 or so in an order ! By far, this place is my go-to for a garbage plate. Their hot sauce is tasty with just enough kick to keep you interested without overwhelming the senses. The burgers are thin but never dry, and their hots are the finest in Rochester. They also make pickles by the bucket and they're crispy and delicious and totally free. So, so dissapointed with the customer service I received yesterday at this location. I have never seen an employee so rude and miserable. It was so uncomfortable talking to her just to place my order bc she would just stare at me like she wanted to punch me in the face if I didn't order right then and there. She would mumble under her breathe so I had to ask her to repeat herself when she would then roll her eyes and speak up with more attitude.
