My companion's Philly Cheesesteak was steamy hot, full of melted cheese and loaded with flavorful meat and veggies. It was an impressive looking sandwich, and I'm not surprised it's her all time favorite at Charlie's. Charlie's has operated since 1969 serving hungry customers in the Rochester area. It's a casual restaurant, where you order at the counter. The menu is on the wall. It isn't too excessive, but it's a good idea to check it out on their website beforehand--especially if it's your first time. I always need more time to decide what to have. My sandwich with marinara sauce on the side was extremely well done. The meat was very moist and tasted good. Our sides, onion rings and mushrooms, also were perfectly breaded and we enjoyed it a lot. I'm sure this place doesn't need any recommendations. Food is excellent! Walk in, order at the counter and find a seat. Fountain sodas, pickles and condiments are self serve. Staff is very friendly and helpful. The place is always packed with people, especially on the weekends but plenty of seating. You have to get the garbage plate! My favorite is always with the home fries, red hots and Mac salad. Put the hot sauce meat sauce all over it and a side of sweet pickles and it's perfection! My son had fries and chicken tenders but after trying my garbage plate he left the fries and chicken tenders alone. My husband played it safe with a bacon cheeseburger. Honestly it was more like a smash burger and bacon was cooked to perfection; nice and crispy. He did get the hot sauce meat sauce on the side and said it elevated his burger. I know in Rochester there's garbage plates everywhere because it's what Rochester is known for and I've tried many places but Charlie's wins, hands down. Highly recommend. A Webster classic that's one for the books and a must added place to stop when in town for a burger. Staff are always friendly with memories that amaze me each time I'm there (IYKYK) and the food is always delicious! When eating, it can be sloppy and mess but I think that only adds to the experience. Fries and onion rings are crispy and steaming hot, and pickles come in buckets were customers can help themselves. Best burger joint around. Their crinkle cut fries are so good! We got milkshakes, we tried the strawberry the chocolate and the cookies and cream, and my God they were so delicious. Their burgers are absolutely amazing. If you haven't been here, they have these huge vats of pickles, both dill and sweet pickles that you can keep refilling at your leisure throughout your meal. Well, it's an Americana diner. It's been here for a very long time. To be honest, it's tacky and very outdated. I'd say the mustard yellow and brown vinyl everything is hard to overlook. It's flat out ugly. Paid $8.29 for a mushroom Swiss. The burger was VERY thin and overcooked. Canned mushrooms and processed Swiss cheese. But the bun was nice and overall lacked flavor but for the Americana burger lover, you'd prolly like it. We also ordered onion rings. They were greasy but nice and crispy and not over breaded. They were $4.59 which seems high for onion rings. Condiments were self serve at a table up from to get packets of condoments. Sorta weird. They still have all the Covid plastic barriers up too. Also weird. Covid was 5 years ago. We ordered at the counter and it was delivered to our table on a plastic tray and paper plates...ugh I think the server was likely an owner. Ultra casual tye doe shirt and nice positive attitude. Overall, I'd likely not recommend this place as it's not the kind of place I usually go. But husband had nice memories of his past there. I've been going to Charlie's in Webster practically since I was born! Charlie's has one of my favorite "Rochester-Style" burgers, the Charlieburger. Always ordered on a hard roll with everything on it. Yes, it's a bit messy to eat, but that's just part of the experience! Their hot sauce is great, too. Charlie's also has one of my favorite "trash plates" in Rochester, and their plate sauce (different from their burger hot sauce) is amazing...it really has a kick which I love, and they don't skimp on it either! The service is always friendly and super quick, and I'll never understand how they remember your order, and always get it right without writing it down...I'm always impressed! The free vats of sweet and dill pickles are a great bonus...not sure if they're homemade or not, but they have always tasted the same, and I've never found anything quite like them. I read reviews on here about their Impossible garbage plate, so I had to go try it! I am vegetarian, and have never had the typical meat sauce that goes on a garbage plate. So I ordered it plain with the impossible meat sauce on the side. Thank goodness I did because I am not a fan, lol. My husband ate it and said it tastes like garbage plate sauce, so there was nothing wrong with it. Just not my taste. The garbage plate itself was good. The Impossible burgers were a little thin. They could have been thicker. The fries were ok, and the mac salad was good. It was a very good price for an Impossible plate though. And it came with a drink. My husband got a double mushroom swiss burger and also liked it. Ordering online was easy. And when I got there they had curbside pickup, so I didn't even need to get out of my car, which is always nice. We'd both go back. read more

What has happened to my beloved Charlie's? Went today for a burger and what I got was terrible. It was so thin , half the thickness of a Burger King hamburger. It was also tasteless . Charlies has some of the best garbage plates in the city! We live out of state now but make it a point to stop here every time we come back to Rochester. Also a bonus - they have vegetarian plates made with beyond burgers. They even have a veggie meat hot sauce! I've been a Rochester native my entire 30+ years of living and I know a good garbage plate. As someone whose now been vegan for close to 10 years.. I gotta say there hasn't been a single place I recall having an official vegan version of this Rochester staple. The only place that comes to mind is New Ethic Pizzeria, but unfortunately they have extremely limited hours, so when I realized Charlie's had a vegan plate.. I knew I needed to go try it. Especially since they open early and close late ! I ordered the vegan half plate. It comes with vegan mac salad, home fries, and a single impossible patty. Impossible is my favorite meat alternative so I'm thrilled they had it over Beyond. I also dressed mine up with the standard ketchup, mustard, onion, and a side of their vegan meat hot sauce. You MUST get the hot sauce. Then make sure you stop over at the pickle area for loads of pickles too. The plate was the perfect vegan plate. Seriously. I couldn't have been happier and more satisfied. It's also ALOT of food, more than enough for a second meal. I've already been back here twice to get the plate, and I will continue to come back for it. I don't think the other locations have this on their menu, but I could be wrong. I haven't been to Charlie's in quite some time, at least 15 years in fact...not because I don't like the food here or anything, because their food was always delicious. Just because it's quite the drive for me and when I'm hungry I prefer to get something a little closer. So what has brought me back to one of my childhood favorite burger joints? Vegetarian Garbage plates!!! I have recently stopped eating meat this past year..about 5 months ago to be in fact..and I swear it has put my diabetes in full remission. The garbage plate war in Rochester is a real thing now. Growing up in Rochester there were not many locations for a plate but now they have multiplied ten fold. I used to live in Greece but my parents moved to Macedon so I have begun to grab garbage plates in other corners of the city. Charlie Riedel's is kicking some serious butt in this garbage plate battle royal. They have fast service, ample parking and are located in a nice area. Most importantly their plate is amazing. The sauce is killer and every element is spot on. Their plate is slightly more expensive than the one in the city but they also give you a bit more of everything. The burgers are bigger and the sides are plentiful. I don't want to turn my back on the original but this garbage plate connoisseur is seriously impressed by what Charlie and company is putting out! read more

I am visiting my brother's family here in town for the week and this is my second visit. I have to tell folks who want to get a quick lunch/dinner that this place is really, REALLY good at what they do. I have been here at least four times in the past two years when visiting and each time I have gotten the same thing. The garbage plate. It's iconic Rochester, since the days when I went to the U of R and would head over to Nick Tahou's Hots and get this along with a hundred of my drunkest fellow students. It's a western NY staple and it still delivers. Here at Charlie's they offer you options. Who doesn't like choices? I go with the cheeseburger plate- two open face cheeseburgers cooked to perfection, with mustard, onions, banana peppers (not something I would have chosen 20 years ago) and their famous hot sauce (I wish they would bottle this up and sell it!) along with my two sides- which has evolved from mac salad and home fries----now tater tots because I need that nostalgia. The plate is $11.99, and is served in a styrofoam dinner box so if you're not going to eat it all you can close up the box and take it home with you. It is definitely more expensive than 20 years ago, but I don't mind. It's a CRAP-TON of food. More than enough for your drunk, hungry party animals, or the working man who needs a hefty portion to make it through their day. Comes with a drink- they have Pepsi fountain drinks so I chose the diet Mountain Dew for the classic 1990's meal. It's two hours later and I am pretty sure I am not going to need dinner. They offer two types of pickle chips to supplement your meal with some acidity...and have little plastic cups (with LIDS, too!) to take some extra pickles or ketchup/mustard with you to your table or home. The little touches are what help take this over the top. I miss being here in Rochester as I have lived in Chicago for 20 years now. But each and every time I visit family I will be back, because this is exactly what I love to remind me of what I remember of "home". The people, the weather, the food...and family. The service is spectacular here. They are ready for the lunch rush, dinner rush- you're not going to wait long for anything here. Also see that they sell ice cream (Gifford's) but I can't even imagine putting anything more down after the plate. WORTH THE VISIT. Try it, you may love it! I certainly do. To the fine folks of Charlie's- if you ever think about packaging your hot sauce, or even your pickles for sale- I am an experienced packaging specialist and would love nothing more than to help get you some retail business because I know that you're going to KILL it. Really liked my garbage plate!! I am gluten free and was accommodated nicely. I do wish they had a Mac salad alternative to help balance the hot garbage plate components. Perhaps cole slaw as a substitute? I am not sure what they have in terms of substitutions. Also, great bang for your buck. The plate made great leftovers the next day. The staff was very efficient, especially given Covid regulations. However, I have docked a star because the experience ordering was not great. I informed the waitress that I had never been to Charlies nor have I ever had a garbage plate. She gave me a menu and asked if I was ready about 20 seconds later. She offered no suggestions for substituting the mac salad. Also, she expected us to know what we wanted for toppings even though that was not mentioned on the menu anywhere--apparently mustard, onion, and hot sauce (which is meat sauce) are the topling options. Gottas love the Charlie Burger... since the closing (and demolishing) of the Charlie Riedel's in Victor, I'll have to either hoof it to Webster or go to Canandaigua for a fix. I don't frequent this Charlie's as much as I used to, but it is my favorite. Great food, always fresh & tasty! Their hot sauce is quite different than that of Empire Hots & Nick Tahous.
