If I could rate zero stars, I would. This place is a DUMP. I genuinely do not understand how people are still rating it 5 stars. Marks used to be the place to go for food late at night, nowadays I wouldn't eat there if you paid me. I went there recently to get a garbage plate after a show at a local venue, the place is now takeout only, they only have half the lights on in the place, (I'm assuming to save money) The menus on the wall have been taped over multiple times with different prices, (I'm assuming once again, to save money) and those menus don't even list everything that's available. I don't know what the point of that is. I ordered a garbage plate, and I kid you not, I could have done a better job with one foot in the grave. The home fries were burnt and soggy, the hot sauce was burnt and tasted like pavement, somehow they screwed up hotdogs too of all things, and while I was waiting for my sad plate of disappointment, a guy came in off the streets and tried to sell me cigarettes. There used to be a security guard at the door to keep people like that out. Guess they can't afford to pay that guy either. If you're in Rochester and you're hungry at 2 in the morning, just stay hungry. One of my favorite places, since I was a kid, sadly lost 90% of its charm and usefulness when they became a take-out only place. They're now open when all other restaurants are all open, when nobody wants to go there. They used to be open 24/7 and they mislead you now, by saying they still are. They don't let you sit down or eat there after hours anymore, so there's no need to bother going. They went from the best place open all night to boring and average other times. read more

When in Rochester, you have to end the night with a garbage plate. This was some of our first times trying said garbage plate. Here, it is called the sloppy plate. Until about 10pm, you can get the full sloppy plate for $8 and some change with a drink. Unfortunately, we got there at almost 2am. When we entered, there was a security guard that greeted us. There was also a queuing area outside. More on that later. We were a table of 7 and the waitress accommodated us quickly. We ordered our sloppy plates. We all got the minis. No one finished them. It came with one hotdog or one burger. I cant imagine the size of the two pieces of meat option. It was alright. I dont really love all my food touching, but it was a welcome experience. For the hot dog option you could choose between red or white. I chose the local fare of white. You could also get mac salad, hash browns, fries, beans, etc. On your plate. I went basic with the hash browns, which are crispy potatoes. Would I get a sloppy plate, or garbage plate again? Probably not. I had heartburn on the way home. This dish isnt for the faint of heart. The waitress, I wish I had gotten her name, was so sweet. I cant imagine having to deal with that type of crowd and remain happy and with a smile on your face. Her demeanor is gold. As the restaurant started to flood in with people ending their time at the clubs and bars, the space was getting more claustrophobic and we were out. Late night hangover prevention going on here. No alcohol sold here. Came by at 2:45am and it was packed. We sat in the corner booth and Bambi served us. We had the Mark's Sloppy Plate special for $10.99. You can customize it, so we went with one hotdog and one cheeseburger with macaroni salad and home fries. We shared the plate and still didn't finish it all. It could've used more flavor. The locals put ketchup on it, so we followed suit and added hot sauce. Service was prompt. Mark's is the late-night staple people need when the bars close. The last time I came here was with a gaggle of gays after a 140 drag show let out. Mark's is the great preventer of the tequila hangover. The place is popping late at night. Most of us ordered breakfast, to sop a night of poor choices. There wasn't any of that typical greasy grime you'd expect in a diner that's been around this long. The inside is dated but clean. The waitress and manager were very attentive and friendly. Food came fast, was hot, and delicious. Fries crispy, Mac salad flavorful and not overly mayonnaiseey, the burgers dogs and sauce were good as expected. Like I said. The mac salad was PERFECT - not too sweet and a really nice compliment to the rest of the plate. Both the french fries and home fries were good, but I preferred the crispiness of the french fries. It was Sunday and I wanted a garbage plate.The original Tahou's was closed so I checked the web for the top 10 garbage plate spots in Rochester. Mark's came up third on the list and they are open 24/7. I have had recreations elsewhere and have been disappointed. The original is always the best IMO but I needed a plate stat. Mark's is essentially a full service diner. I saw lots of people enjoying breakfast but you know what I was looking for. The verdict? This garbage plate is fantastic! They use yellow mustard and the original uses brown which I prefer. They used red skin potatoes for the home fries and they were outstanding. Delicious mac salad and perfectly cooked cheeseburgers. In many ways (gasp) this plate is better than the original. It also came with a big hunk of Italian bread that I did not feel like eating. 24/7 and using their own techniques the Mark's plate should definitely be on your garbage plate radar! read more

So when in Rochester eat a garbage plate, not the most appealing thing. It's a jumble of fries, hamburger patties, ground meat, onions, cheese and macaroni salad tossed with some ketchup and hot sauce. Well it's definitely not healthy but it oddly works and it wasn't bad. Fun to try and eat. Gives you spicy, salty, hint of sweet, greasy, creamy, hard and soft textures. Little bit of everything... It begins with a door man dressed in Kevlar that's 4 sizes too small for his ginormous frame. He's got mace, he's got a mag-lite, he's got a ponytail of hair and a commitment to this position unmatched by even the top ranking NAVY SEALS... and he's got asthma but that's not stopping him from defending the honor of this fine establishment. He screams at you while you stand in line for what feels like days in the freezing cold. Why didn't you bring a coat? You will be ushered inside away from the throngs of random homeless people, over-grown girl scouts yacking in the streets and some random dude with 78 inch rims screaming from his car window about his 'Squad'. Our fearless security guard will shout at you some more, just make sure to remain calm and not spook him. Before him, everybody was getting stabbed. Now, with him, people are totally still getting stabbed but it's much less malicious. (I'M TOTALLY KIDDING.... everyone is still getting stabbed). From the inside lobby you must stay focused and alert. Keep your eyes on every waitress because one of them will point to a booth and if you miss the finger gesture, it all starts over for you. You need to be in drunk sexy cheetah mode. Once your pounce the table is yours. The waitress will come with water and you have 30 seconds to order or starve to death so do your whole table a favor and memorize this mantra in the cab on the way over or just write it on your forehead with eyeliner if you plan on sleeping on the table. Repeat this chant over and over again until you know it better than your name: "Double cheese burger plate, everything on it, extra sauce". With this step by step guide, there will be no surprises. That's a lie actually. I've been to Mark's hundreds of times and I am still pleasantly surprised every time I go by the amount of nudity, fighting, rowdiness, yacking, table dancing and weave pulling that is seemly always present there. I honestly don't know how else to say this but it's my favorite place to be. I feel entirely at home in Mark's. Their food is phenomenal and it's literally like dinner and a show. It is so worth every penny you spend there and if you're visiting you can't miss it because you show up with an empty stomach ad a bad tinder date and you leave with a great story and sometimes 1 less shoe. After a morning spent at the Rochester Museum and Science Center, Dad and I were looking for a place to grab a quick lunch before my business meeting at the Eastman Kodak company. I turned to my trusty Yelp app, and read lots of reviews for a place called Mark's Texas Hots on Monroe Avenue, just off the interstate. I had to chuckle as we drove up, and my Dad cocked an eyebrow as he looked at me and said, "Reallllly?" Mark's has the appearance of a greasy spoon, dive-y diner, with all sorts of colorful, local characters strolling the streets nearby. We slid into a booth along the back wall, and our waitress came over to say Hi and take our drink orders. Dad's eyes lit up when he saw the hot turkey platter with mashed potatoes and gravy for under $6, and he instantly stopped doubting my sanity for suggesting this place. I decided to check out the preferred meal of Mark's regulars and Yelp reviewers, and ordered Mark's Sloppy Plate Special, which was 2 cheeseburgers over fries, potato salad; with 2 pieces of French bread, and the whole damn thing was covered with chili. *OINK* There was no way in the world that I could finish this entire plate of food, but I sure had a lot of fun trying. I can see Mark's being a popular late-night stop on the way home from the bars. Under those circumstances, I'm quite sure that I'd be licking my plate clean! But for those of us who wish to pursue a greasy carbo-load in the middle of the night for no other reason than the fact that "it's time for this"... well, you have to judge things for what they are. And for what it is, Mark's gets 5 stars. I often get too caught up comparing Rochester to Boston. It's something I probably need to let go of, and will probably even out over time. But I have to say... in this department, we are spoiled in Rochester. Boston's bars close too damn early, most people can't get home from the best bars without a taxi, and finding food at such an hour is an exercise in futility. But Rochester? pfff... those concerns aren't even on the radar. We can walk to our bars, know that they won't close 'til a sensible hour, and stumble out towards the direction of this city's gem stone: the plate. The place is kinda clean, but not too clean. The service is nice and quick, but they also act like real people and will have a laugh with you. A sketchy looking dude with a trench coat and thick glasses walks into the building and briskly rushes into the bathroom, where he spends a suspiciously long amount of time. Q: What could he be doing in there at 2:30am that's taken 25 minutes thus far? A: Nobody gives a shit, because a pile of food was just set down right under our noses. If you find that you're unable to follow this line of thinking, then I suggest you go straight home from the bar. And that's not to say that you can't do either of these things depending on the evening. Sometimes it's just not a night for Mark's, even if you're usually okay listening to people argue in Spanish on the sidewalk while you watch through the window and shovel 7 different kinds of food into your mouth in 1 bite. The point is: it's there. A 24/7 slop trough. Does it NEED to be sketchy? YES! At 2:30 in the goddamn morning?! Are you kidding me?! It wouldn't be the same without it! My father has told me stories of sketchy nights at Nick Tahou's in the late 70's - early 80's. Places like Mark's and the vibe they adopt in the wee hours are a part of this city's identity, and it's been that way for well over a generation now. OH! And the food was good. I think.
