The NOTA was delicious and is everything that I love in a pizza-- good cheese with well-paired flavors, not too greasy or heavy, perfectly chewy crust. The outdoor patio is cute and intimate. Cute place! Came here with my work friends and we absolutely had a ball! I ordered the short rib and i was torn because they ate known for their burgers and have won awards for them!! Additionally, all of their burgers are based on historical impactful people from Rochester like Fredrick Douglass. Fun stuff! Now my meal was absolutely amazing i love a tender and fully rounded tasting short rib. What i mean by that is there was one single flavor that was too forward something when you order shoer rib all you can taste is red wine that is not the case here. This place is a gem. It has an industrial look, like the building itself in. The staff is so nice, and even though we didn't have a reservation we were seated quickly. Our order was taken quickly, and they split the salad for us! So nice. The Manhattan salad was so tasty. I got the Lobster Ravioli which were divine, the butter sauce was just amazing. The scallop dish my husband had was good too, but does have a kick so the coconut rice was a super nice side with it. Then we got a coconut creme brûlée for dessert, hmm worth it. My wife and I split a Powdermill salad which was served on individual plates which was nice, I think. The salad was really very good although I can miss the cheese filled breadstick served on the side. Our burgers were also really really good the cook was a tad over that which was ordered but that's okay. Fresh onions, lettuce and tomato were welcome. My burger, The Golosano, had nicely melted Gruyère with what is listed as a "variety of mushrooms". I couldn't distinguish different mushrooms nor could I taste the truffle in the aioli. That is being picky though because the burger overall was delicious. My wife reported that her burger, The Gramm was also very good as were the garlic rosemary fries. Service was good, pleasant server but she could have checked on us a little more but we were seated outside so maybe that's why she didn't. We stopped by the bar before our reservation. Friendly staff and accommodating. We had a reservation for 7 and asked if two more could join us. Fortunately our table had extra seats and there was no issue adding extra guests. Service was quick. Food was absolutely delicious. Reservations are text in advance for reminders and advised 90 minutes for the table. It was semi loud where we were seated and at times could be a struggle to hear the person across from you. I love the Gate House. Been going fir years. The fire roasted chicken wings are my go to and the bacon wrapped dates are always a great treat. The Cesar salad has pasta in it that I love! The have fun in house crafted seasonal cocktails. Service is always straightforward, it can get quick busy. This place needs to get its manners right. We were a group of 15 which requested a reservation for 17 people originally for brunch on a weekend. Upon arriving, we were told that the reservation they had under the organizer's name was only for 10 people and asked us if there is a possibility that the rest were under a different name, which was not the case. They offered to seat us at two different tables to which we hesitantly agreed. We were a meet up group and would have appreciated if all of us were seated together and even if not, at-least treated with dignity. The so called manager was so non chalant and detached. Had a great dinner here! My boyfriend and I had just flown into Rochester after a long day of travel. We picked this off of google maps and it couldn't have been more perfect for us. Even though we didn't have reservations, we were seated right away for the outdoor area. The inside area had a longer wait, but the outdoor area is a nice quiet patio. All the staff were friendly and helpful! Food was delicious! We split a salad, pizza, and dessert and we were perfectly full by the end. The Gate House is a gem. We ate here after our daughter's graduation from RIT, and it truly was the perfect place for our party of five to celebrate the special occasion. We started with drinks: the best root beer floats imaginable, Seasmoke (Bacardi, passionfruit, guava, lime, blue spirulina), and Mother of Dragons (strawberry vodka, dragonfruit liqueur, white peach, rose cava). I love sweet drinks and the Mother of Dragons was perfect. For an appetizer, we shared the strawberry burrata, and this was one of the most unique and delicious appetizers I've ever had. Our entrees consisted of burgers, chicken, a pizza, and the spring pea ravioli. Everything was cooked to perfection, but in my opinion the stand out entree was the ravioli. The brown butter sauce was magnificent and I savored every bite. Service was fantastic, and I can't say enough great things about our Gate House experience. read more

Gorgeous July evening so we elected to eat outside. They always have great cocktails so started with a summer blueberry number. I ordered the Nashville hot chicken tenders with rosemary Parmesan fries. It came with sweet pickle slices and Cole slaw. My partner had a classsic cheeeseburger with black and tan onion rings and a vanilla shake. Service was good but a bit slow but it was obvious staff was not adequate to handle the amount of diners. It's taken me a long time to review The Gate House for a very silly reason: I simply forget to snap a picture of their food before getting too excited and diving in. I've never had a bad meal here, and I've eaten at The Gate House at least half a dozen times. The falafel and pita platter is divine, all their pizzas are incredibly solid, and the eggplant "fries" shareable plate is innovative and a hit with any eggplant lover. If I can offer one recommendation for what to order, I suggest The Wease: a burger with bacon, an INCREDIBLY juicy patty, and a crispy, flavorful black and tan onion ring on top. If I can offer an additional recommendation... get a side of the black and tan onion rings with it. According to our server, the rings are beer-battered with a dark brew instead of the usual lighter choice, and you can taste the difference. The space is large, with a wood-fired pizza oven behind the food counter at the far end, and always a little bit loud due to the sheer number of people carrying on lively conversations. The bar is long and, in addition to the chairs at the bar, has a few two-person high-top tables in the area. I'm absolutely going to keep coming back--the siren call of those onion rings is hard to resist. read more

I was a huge fan of the gatehouse the past two years. They gave great vibes and amazing food. I have been going there for almost 3 years but as of late - the service, customer service and vibes have changed immensely. They sadly have started having horrible service to me and my family - I originally thought I was a very inclusive space for Black and Brown folks but I have started to feel the shift that they have catered to a particular upper class and non-inclusive space. The front staff used to be so kind and nice but know it feels like lowkey MAGA and racist undertones. Not to mention that everytime my family came in the last 3 years, the staff was very respectful of my family. Now I regret spending at least $300-500/month to a restaurant that used to be about the people and have shifted its priority. God forbid you have melanin or a mixed group, good luck with service... My final straw was how the staff tried to gaslight and disregard that I had an emergency for a reservation made and was charged $30 (a family member passed) and they told us there are no exceptions for emergencies or medical...that was just downright unbelievable. I feel saddened having to see how it's changed over the course of this political arena, especially as the Black and Brown community went here to often and have supported the chain for a long time. Now I'd be wary of going here sadly it has been very reminiscent of the way this country is to Latinos and Black people. I hate to say it, but I was a little more excited about The Gatehouse than what I ultimately experienced.. and to be clear, I'm mostly talking about the food, not the overall vibe or the staff. The service was great, and our food came out quickly, especially considering we were a large party. Overall, the experience was smooth, but my meal just didn't quite hit the mark for me. I ordered the vegan plate and was genuinely happy to see a few vegan options on the menu(always a win in Rochester), but the execution felt a bit off. I loved the rosemary fries and the vegan burger patty itself; both were flavorful. The vegan mac salad was.. well.. warm (which I wasn't expecting or prefer), but still tasted good. Where things got weird was the vegan meat hot ..it had a strong taco/cumin seasoning that really clashed with the rest of the plate. It just didn't feel cohesive. And while I'm always here for avocado, in this case it felt unnecessary and added to the overall confusion of the dish. Was it supposed to be Mexican-American-inspired ? Would've rather just seen it as classic Rochester garbage plate to be honest.. Because the meal didn't wow me, I ended up skipping the $10 vegan dessert, even though I was initially excited to try it. That said, I'll probably give The Gatehouse another shot down the line. I'm still curious, and I appreciate that they even have vegan options, but next time I'm hoping for a more thoughtful, balanced plate... but even the burger combinations sounded outrageous... Bonus - How I would adjust the veg plate as a long time vegan: First off... let it be known, this is what Rochester is all about ! That said, I'd make a few tweaks. Serve the mac salad cold (as it should be!). For the meat sauce, I'd tone down the Mexican flavors... MUCH LESS cumin and cinnamon, more garlic and smoked paprika. Maybe even a splash of soy sauce or a good vegan beef broth would deepen the umami too. I'd also skip the avocado on top and swap in some classic diced onions instead. I've been going here for years whenever I'm home in Rochester. This trip I went 3 times with 3 different groups of people. I love the specialty drink menu. I love the wood fire wings. I love the pizza. I also got the chicken tortilla one day this trip and the flavor profile was out of this world! The four of us co II is not communicate unless you were within inches away as it was too loud. I've seen worse, but it was not good. I ordered the Wegmans Lamberger. I've been eating lamb since I was five years old. It was the driest overcooked lamb I've ever had. My wife ordered chicken Milan. I tasted it. It also was dry, which probably means it was overcooked. One of our friends ordered salmon, and look good. He told me it was good, but yes, the salmon was a little overcooked. If you know, salmon, you never want salmon overcooked Our other friend ordered a salad with a protein. He did not complain. That again the chef didn't actually create the lettuce. The service was fine, but I probably will never go back to this restaurant. There was just nothing about it. That would make me want to come back. To go further, if you ever have not been to the village gate, be aware parking is not great. That Add's to yet one more reason not quickly want togo there. read more

This is one of my favorite American Restaurants in Rochester. The location in Village Gate is ideal. The ambiance of the reataurant is classy, open and vibly. The best part of the Gatehouse and what they are known for is their Burgers and Pizzas. Im not a burger fan but have been told by several of my friends that their burgers are some of the best they have had! Had a very limited window to have lunch and return to the Auditorium Theater for my nieces dance comp. We had no reservations and the place was packed. The bartender Laura was outstanding and flagged us over for a small 2-top at the Bar. She said she would have us in/out in an hour and made good on that as well as far surpassed our expectations with service and personality. We did the brunch burgers ... YUM! Laura was the best!!! Very attentive to my brother and I, then packed up our other meals to go back and feed his wife/kids with 8 min to spare...Outstanding! Disappointed with the food. My burger was overcooked and dry. Beef had no flavor. Sweet potato fries were overly sweet covered in sugar, my husbands lunch was a meatball bomber which was burned on the bottom and he struggled to cut it with a sharp knife, it lacked tomato sauce and had very little meat. The restaurant is warm with reclaimed barn board, including chairs that are wide enough for a woman who frequents restaurants. Our Parmesan chicken had good flavor but mild and the sauce was poured over, not coated like I'm used to. My salad included flowers, berries, and nuts and it was really fresh like we were still in July. My wife had the avocado toast-- delicious with a lot going on for one dish.We both ended up salting our food which is unusual for a restaurant t with this kind of menu, but that may be our own bodies getting ready for winter. I totally recommend the mocktails. The food was so good that these nit picky comments are more about expectation of perfection than complaint. I am dairy free and sometimes it is hard to find options but they had a great vegan and gluten-free menu! They even had kids gluten-free pizza!! my friends and I got the bruschetta and two of their signature drinks which I do not remember the names of them but they were delicious!! I got a regular burger because apparently they're well known for their burgers and I got apples on it and fried onions which was very different but amazing. We were there tonight with a small group. One of the worst dining experiences I have had in a long time. Between the loud cramped atmosphere and the food, awful. It's pretty hard to mess up a salad, but they managed to, the chicken was overcooked for one and the salad soggy and just bad. I tried some of the other meals and they were equally bad. Even the pizza was a mess. Third time I've been there (not by my choice) and each time has been less than even mediocre. Not sure who would rate this 5 stars, maybe the employees or friends, but definitely not anyone who's actually enjoyed decent food before. read more
