This establishment may be in the running for being one of the top 3 soul food restaurants in the Rochester area! Let's just note: I advise you to visit this restaurant ONCE they open. A couple of friends and I arrived 5 minutes before opening on a Sunday and cars already began pulling up. Within 15 minutes, the line was out the door! For my first visit, I decided to try a bunch of sides! I chose the candied yams, cornbread, dirty rice, and of course, mac & cheese. Everything was great! The dirty rice was definitely a hit for me. So this is a drive thru Soul Food Restaurant only due to COVID. My family and Placed our order and parked on the side of the restaurant for someone to bring our food out. We waited about 15 minutes the quoted time. I had Fried chicken, Mac and Yams and they were very good so did my youngest son. My husband got the turkey wings and they were the best, omg so tender and seasoned perfectly with lots of onions and peppers. Definitely recommend this place! read more

I went into Tangie's after a rough day with a lot of bad news. I ordered my food and quickly after it was done. Tangie herself came out to meet me and made me feel better overall with her honest down to earth optimism and caring. By the time I left my heart ache was on the mends; due to her caring nature and the phenomenal food. dealers choice was Smothered pork chop sandwich, which was just the right amount of crispy and savory, with the onion ring on top. Tangie's famous dirty rice filled me up and had me wanting more. and to top it all off some ribs and mashed potatoes (there were leftovers for lunch tomorrow) which was the best part! thank you Tangie and team! read more

This evening was my first and last time! I ordered fried fish. I should have known better because it was sitting under the light, so freshness had expired hrs ago but I took the chance! Guess what, never again! Service was subpar. Also, one of the women serving us, took back my friend's plate to remove one oxtail because I'm assuming, she felt like he was over served. I'm not sure. I have worked in the Food Service industry since 1982, started off as a deli clerk and worked my way up to Sous Chef. I'm from The Bronx, NY. Visiting a friend that I met online. Told her I wanted to eat some good food. Something fast, but with a lot of love in it. She told me about Tangie's Kitchen. Walked in the door...for some strange reason I didn't smell any food,. Went straight to the steamed display. Not much of a choice, but that didn't bother me. From experience, I've learned you put your best on display at all times. Beef Ribs, Mac & cheese...and something I don't usually eat, Beans. Oh, I got some meat loaf also. She ordered, total price, just under $30 dollars. Other things to do, so food sat in it's package in the car for about 45 minutes. No biggie, good food ALWAYS reheat nicely in microwave. You just have to catch that right temp, not too hot, not too cool. But let me tell you. I never taste anything in my life like this cooking. Starting with the beans, mix with I think ground beef, with gravy. My mouth jumped for joy. The beef ribs cooked just right. The mac & cheese. Sorry, I must have came a little too late, a little dry, but also good. Had no room for the muffin that came included. Saved the meatloaf for the bus ride back to the city. Question...why are you not in NYC, say Harlem or even The Bronx? Branch out, give it a shot. But ya have to bring the same cooks with you. Tangie's is about as home-cooked as you can get. We had marinated ox-tail and smothered pork chops. Both came over rice and with 2 sides. between the two of us we tried the collard greens, mac and cheese, and yams. The pork chops had a great brown gravy that went well over the rice. The ox tail had a savory peppery gravy. It's flavor was great, but it did not pull away from the bone as well as we are used to from stewed preparations. The sides won the day. The greens barely had any bitterness and were spicy. The yams were so sweet and cinnamony that they tasted almost like apple pie. We also tried the sweet potato pie, but the candied yams were sweeter and more seasoned. There is no menu. The food is all laid out and ready for you to choose. There were plenty of meat options including cube steak, chicken, and those above. We took it to go, which seemed common for the few minutes we were in there. There are tables but it really is not a nice restaurant. It is wide open...including the storage room in back is all wide open. I guess you don't realize the importance of decor until it is absent I loved the food, but can't see myself eating in the restaurant, so I had to give a more balanced rating. read more

Note: Tangie's Kitchen is no longer on Lake Ave. They moved to East Ridge Road. This is my favorite soul food spot in the Rochester. My faves are the smother pork chops, but when I'm feeling guilty about eating too much red meat, I'll go with the smoked turkey wings (I get those with the mixed beans, and I mix the turkey meat, the beans, and the rice all together -- BAM!). My only complaint is that sometimes when I arrive early, they still haven't finished putting out all the food. On those occasions, some of the sides that come out haven't really settled yet (like the mixed beans and the Mac and cheese). So I usually avoid getting there too early. YES! I had all but given up on my quest for decent soul food since moving here a couple of years ago from Atl. I'm not talking bbq or cajun, I'm talkin soul food which is subtly but undeniably different. Came here based on a rec from a coworker who laughed when I complained I hadnt had any good fried chicken in a long time. Its pretty easy to find, and is set up for take-out or eat in. This is the kind of spot where the menu items are displayed behind glass as soon as you enter, in steaming chafing dishes, so you can peruse the various vittles they have to offer. I was on a health kick so went with the baked chicken, and chose some mac and cheese and greens as my sides. Hands down, the best soul food Ive had since my last sunday dinner after church at Grandma's! I'm way too excited to have discovered this place. Its your typical meat and 2 set-up and rice comes additional with every dinner! Can ya believe it? I can't wait to head back here and try the meatloaf, ribs, smothered chicken, yams and Lord knows what else. Prices were ok. About 10-12 bucks per dinner, but definitely worth it. After stuffing my face with meatloaf, fried pork chops and Mac and cheese, I had no room for the banana pudding I fully intended to order. The new place is clean and stylish with plenty of room to sit and eat-in. Looks like a drive-thru will be opening up soon. I had a bunch of really good experiences with this restaurant and one not so good experience. I would recommend the curry chicken or beef roast. I wasn't a huge fan of the cube steak. I say go for it, if you're in the mood for soul food. Also, this address is outdated. read more

I needed a caterer for my daughter's graduation party. My brother told me how amazing the food was here. I had no clue. EVERYTHING I tasted was delicious!!!! I had to book her.
