The good, the bad, and the not exactly ugly but certainly a bit weird. Good: very solid Chile verde, a virgin margarita that actually tastes like something, and a baseline salsa with a little heat. Decent carnitas too. Bad: First, service. Bro, when the first thing you do is come to my table and ask for drink orders (as expected), my margarita should not arrive at the same time as my meal. Second, margaritas. Both the house and the ostensible Cadillac (which tasted the same) lacked flavor and strength and salt on the rim. Like seriously, there was more salt on the kid's virgin than mine. Third, pricing X portion. I actually do not want a giant plate of rice and beans, I want to enjoy a smaller but good entree. But just generally, $16 for a cup of guacamole is nuts. I would mind not were the flavors stronger. They were not. We were at $60pp for a shared app, entree, 2 drinks each. I loved La Loma. We made reservations in advance. The highlight was our wonderful server who was so friendly. We made it in time for happy hour and ordered the mini Chile rellenos. I was surprised when they arrived because they looked like egg rolls. They ended up being good, but they are essentially poblano poppers (instead of jalepeno poppers). I wouldn't get the full order if we had come during happy hour. A highlight was the virgin margarita. Since I don't consume alcohol anymore, I have missed a good marg and hesitate in ordering a virgin margarita because I don't want to just drink marg mixer. This was hand crafted and wonderful. We ordered chicken fajitas to split for our main course, and they were stellar. The homemade tortillas are divine. The green Chile, chef's kiss. Unfortunately I started feeling under the weather (probably because I struggled acclimating to the elevation), and they kindly got us out quickly so I could go back to the hotel and lay down. I ordered the classic Green Chile Enchiladas and I will be dreaming of this dish for a long time to come. I finished the meal with a neat Tequila served with a plate of cinnamon and an orange slice. Growing up in southern NM, I have certain standards for Mexican food that differs from my friends and the writers at Westword. The good: * Service was attentive * Generous HH 3-6pm with food & drinks * Decent salsa * Good skinny margarita * Hatch green chile used in green chile (which is delicious and has pork) * Homemade flour tortillas * Rice The not-so-good: * Mini chile rellenos app was more like a fired cheese egg roll (I couldn't taste the Anaheim green chile) * Plato Al Olivio (while a healthy option, lacked flavor; I added both the salsa and jalapeños to it to try to give it a boost as well as tried to squeeze some lime onto the dish. It lacked salt and seasoning) * Location (parking is limited; be sure to arrive early if you are driving your own vehicle and need to find a spot) * Restroom facilities (one stall did have an added piece of glass to restrict views but stall walls weren't very tall and there was an odd sewage odor) Overall, the others in my party enjoyed their food. La Loma at 18th & Broadway has been one of my favorite downtown restaurants for decades. No more! Our first visit to Savina's was a huge disappointment...the service was slow and bad, i.e. no one came to take our drink orders until the bartender finally came over to do so. Drinks did not come as ordered; the waitress did not appear for a good 15 minutes even though it was only moderately busy. My favorite Stuffed Sopapilla is not even good any more. I have visited La Loma since Diamond hill. Now that name changed. So has the tortillas. This is 2nd time I get tortillas that are just Gross. They use to be fluffy and white. Our server made this experience! My husband and I love Tex- Mex style cuisine but were underwhelmed with the food and found it expensive for what it is. For example, a small appetizer scoop of guacamole was $16. It was fresh and tasty just seemed overpriced. Same opinion of our lunches which consisted of tacos and a quesadilla. The tortillas were warm and soft. The green chili is cooked with a poultry or meat stock, and was served warm. Cadillac margaritas were traditional and served over ice. La Loma is pretty close to our house so decided to give it a try. We were not really impressed with the experience. Our waitress was absolutely wonderful but that's where the good experience really ended. We started with an order of chile con queso which was perhaps some of the worst queso I've ever had. I made a comment to my partner that it tasted like homemade mac 'n cheese sauce (but not a well done one). Come to find out it's Monterey Jack and Velveeta melted down. For $12, not worth it. The fajitas for one was a good sized portion and the homemade tortillas were incredible. But we've never had fajitas with 1) onions only and 2) undercooked onions. The queso was bland, boring, and mostly just a melted orange cheese of some sort that was so bland. I split the standard size order or fajitas that came with chicken, beef, and shrimp - The shrimp was great! Huge, fresh shrimp! The chicken was decent, but the beef was also great! The items that came with the fajitas were great also! The refried beans were very tasty and the rice was nice. The pico was flavorful too. Overall, it was a decent visit, but the green chili I tried (which came with the fajitas) was barely just 'ok' Definitely didn't have the flavors, texture, spice I was seeking. Well La Loma when you first moved into your new location you raised the prices and it was pretty steep, but now in the current climate your prices are right along par with every other Mexican restaurant in Denver, and with much better green chili.
