Savina's was highly recommended to us by the valet at the hotel we were staying at. It was a close walk. The restaurant was not very full when we got there but it was early and it was filling up when we were leaving. The homemade tortilla chips were awesome. They had just the right amount of salt. I ordered a chicken quesadilla and my husband ordered the pork burritos. Mine could have had a bit more chicken but it was still delicious. My husband said his was good although they put too many onions on top (if I had to guess it was 1/3 of an onion chopped-a little rediculous). He also had a Catalan margarita that was tasty. Our waiter was friendly and efficient. He talked to us about how he came to Denver from the east coast and liked it here. The chicken was juicy & tender, the shrimp had great flavor and was cooked well (not plain and tough like most places) and the steak was great too! The good, the bad, and the not exactly ugly but certainly a bit weird. Good: very solid Chile verde, a virgin margarita that actually tastes like something, and a baseline salsa with a little heat. Decent carnitas too. Bad: First, service. Bro, when the first thing you do is come to my table and ask for drink orders (as expected), my margarita should not arrive at the same time as my meal. Second, margaritas. Both the house and the ostensible Cadillac (which tasted the same) lacked flavor and strength and salt on the rim. Like seriously, there was more salt on the kid's virgin than mine. Third, pricing X portion. I actually do not want a giant plate of rice and beans, I want to enjoy a smaller but good entree. But just generally, $16 for a cup of guacamole is nuts. I would mind not were the flavors stronger. They were not. We were at $60pp for a shared app, entree, 2 drinks each. That price point didn't match this quality. The weird: i have never had a chile relleno that was a chile wrapped in an egg roll wrapper with cheese and then dipping sauce on the side. I loved La Loma. We made reservations in advance. The highlight was our wonderful server who was so friendly. We made it in time for happy hour and ordered the mini Chile rellenos. I was surprised when they arrived because they looked like egg rolls. They ended up being good, but they are essentially poblano poppers (instead of jalepeno poppers). I wouldn't get the full order if we had come during happy hour. A highlight was the virgin margarita. Since I don't consume alcohol anymore, I have missed a good marg and hesitate in ordering a virgin margarita because I don't want to just drink marg mixer. This was hand crafted and wonderful. We ordered chicken fajitas to split for our main course, and they were stellar. The homemade tortillas are divine. The green Chile, chef's kiss. I ate lunch with a group of 6 last week. Our server was quite professional and not warm & personable. Their green chili plate I ordered was just ok. I didn't particularly care for the taste of their green chili in spite of it being famous. It was served in a bowl with rice & beans and flour tortillas for $15. There were 3-4 chunks of pork in my bowl which turned out to be chunks of fat! Others in our group ordered enchiladas, smothered burritos etc. No one said their food was delicious. I must say the chips & salsa were very good. The restaurant is located right next door to the Navarre Building which houses the National Museum of Western Art which is wonderful. Growing up in southern NM, I have certain standards for Mexican food that differs from my friends and the writers at Westword. Our server made this experience! My husband and I love Tex- Mex style cuisine but were underwhelmed with the food and found it expensive for what it is. For example, a small appetizer scoop of guacamole was $16. It was fresh and tasty just seemed overpriced. Same opinion of our lunches which consisted of tacos and a quesadilla.
