After living in the greater Denver area for nearly 30 years, it was kind of a shocking experience to discover a restaurant that appears to have existed for quite some time. Until today, I had never seen or heard of Savina's before. I accidentally found Savina when I was looking for an alternative restaurant downtown after I couldn't dine at an Italian restaurant only several blocks away (they had unexpected staffing shortage so they had to close it between lunch and dinner.) When I did a search online, Savina's was only a short drive from it. I simply wanted "food" so switching the cuisine from Italian to Mexican was no problem. I needed to do work on my phone so upon arrival, I asked for a table/seat that has outlet access. The kind receptionist then recommended I grab a seat at the bar. And wow! As I proceeded to it, nicely dimmed lights with great ambiance that spreads out all the way to the four corners of the restaurant welcomed me. That was when it dawned on me that Savina's was a high-end Mexican place. Mostly booth tables with some standalone tables in the middle. Wooden beams on the ceiling and bricks as walls, the interior is mostly brown. The very bar I chose to sit at is quite spacious. What caught my attention was the copper countertops at the bar. The rustic charms that were being emitted from it were elegant indeed. As the receptionist kindly instructed me to sit right in the middle of the bar for an easy outlet access, that's exactly what I did. The person in charge at the bar was Craig. He was most professional. His attentiveness was simply timely between the moments of quick conversation he and I had at the beginning. Their menu (for the kind of restaurant Savina is) is a bit small (at least that is what I thought) and yet I don't like massive ones that have food items after another because it causes me to be indecisive so for that reason, Savina's menu size was comforting. For a restaurant with this kind of high-end feel, the prices of the dishes were quite affordable. After a thorough perusal of it, I set my eyes on the Mexican Street Taco (chicken) that comes with three tacos, rice and refried beans. And as of this writing on 9/27/2026, the price of this dish is/was $24. Craig saw me put down the menu. He wasted no time to take my order and it thus was placed with the kitchen immediately. I had about 10 minutes to enjoy the complimentary chips and salsa and my freshly made decaf. To be frank, I wasn't expecting a decaf to be this good at a Mexican restaurant. I mean it was really good. It truly hit the spot. And somehow it paired so well with the complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa was also well made. My plate came out just in time. And it was quite the size. But what impressed me the most was, of course, the quality of it. The rice was well seasoned with the perfect texture/moisture. The refried beans were creamy but not to the point where it was soupy, had lots of flavors with the perfect amount of salt, and were properly mashed. And the protagonist of the plate, chicken tacos were of a good size. Each taco had a good number of diced chicken in them. And the avocado pieces in the tacos were very visible. And they were perfectly ripe with no brownness. The sauce that accompanied the tacos was also notable; a good amount of kick is what I tasted and yet it was a controlled heat. It sure was a nice enhancer. I was able to eat only half of what the plate had so I asked for a container from Craig which he promptly provided. Like I have already mentioned, Craig's attentiveness was spot on. I have to thank that Italian restaurant that was closed (LOL!) Had it not been the case, I don't think I would have discovered Savina's today. From the beautiful ambience to great service to good food, my late lunch at this Mexican restaurant was more than what I could have asked for. I will have to make a point to go back and dine there soon. read more

Savina's was highly recommended to us by the valet at the hotel we were staying at. It was a close walk. The restaurant was not very full when we got there but it was early and it was filling up when we were leaving. The homemade tortilla chips were awesome. They had just the right amount of salt. I ordered a chicken quesadilla and my husband ordered the pork burritos. Mine could have had a bit more chicken but it was still delicious. My husband said his was good although they put too many onions on top (if I had to guess it was 1/3 of an onion chopped-a little rediculous). He also had a Catalan margarita that was tasty. Our waiter was friendly and efficient. He talked to us about how he came to Denver from the east coast and liked it here. We came here on a Saturday night without a reservation and were able to walk right in but we also got there quite early at around 5. The service was great and the waiter routinely checked in on us. I ordered the enchiladas and got one chicken and one brisket and also half green chile and half red sauce. I liked the brisket better and the green chile was very flavorful. The good, the bad, and the not exactly ugly but certainly a bit weird. Good: very solid Chile verde, a virgin margarita that actually tastes like something, and a baseline salsa with a little heat. Decent carnitas too. Bad: First, service. Bro, when the first thing you do is come to my table and ask for drink orders (as expected), my margarita should not arrive at the same time as my meal. Second, margaritas. Both the house and the ostensible Cadillac (which tasted the same) lacked flavor and strength and salt on the rim. Like seriously, there was more salt on the kid's virgin than mine. Third, pricing X portion. I actually do not want a giant plate of rice and beans, I want to enjoy a smaller but good entree. But just generally, $16 for a cup of guacamole is nuts. I would mind not were the flavors stronger. They were not. We were at $60pp for a shared app, entree, 2 drinks each. That price point didn't match this quality. The weird: i have never had a chile relleno that was a chile wrapped in an egg roll wrapper with cheese and then dipping sauce on the side. Other things are good too (guac, salsa, chips, beans, rice, chicken) but the green chile and beef are incredible. Can get pretty busy even on a weekday evening so food may take 20-30 min to come out, and parking is tough but there is paid street parking or garage nearby. We visited this place for a work dinner and I was extremely impressed! The atmosphere was fantastic, walkthrough it was busy, the restaurant did not seem overly crowded while we were at the table. We reserved a spot for the group in advance and the staff set up a nice large round table for our moderate size group to dine at. We were able to interact with everyone throughout dinner. Every dish that came out looked fantastic - and mine was delicious. The portions were arguably too large - they were definitely plenty. Our office is near the convention center and we walked over here. I was a moderate walk, but easy. I've tried a lot of Denver Mexican places and this one stands out! I loved La Loma. We made reservations in advance. The highlight was our wonderful server who was so friendly. We made it in time for happy hour and ordered the mini Chile rellenos. I wouldn't get the full order if we had come during happy hour. A highlight was the virgin margarita. I ordered the classic Green Chile Enchiladas and I will be dreaming of this dish for a long time to come. I finished the meal with a neat Tequila served with a plate of cinnamon and an orange slice. Savinas is a must if you love Mexican food. We started with the guacamole. It was good, but not quite spicy enough. I had fajitas as the main. I did half shrimp and half chicken. They were amazing! Next time I am getting shrimp only. The fajita platter had three days worth of food on it! Just FYI. Our server was so good. He was quick with the margaritas, and really good about checking in. I didn't particularly care for the taste of their green chili in spite of it being famous. It was served in a bowl with rice & beans and flour tortillas for $15. La Loma made Westword's Top 100 Restaurant List in the Best Classic category so I decided to try it. Growing up in southern NM, I have certain standards for Mexican food that differs from my friends and the writers at Westword. The good: * Service was attentive * Generous HH 3-6pm with food & drinks * Decent salsa * Good skinny margarita * Hatch green chile used in green chile (which is delicious and has pork) * Homemade flour tortillas * Rice The not-so-good: * Mini chile rellenos app was more like a fired cheese egg roll (I couldn't taste the Anaheim green chile) * Plato Al Olivio (while a healthy option, lacked flavor; I added both the salsa and jalapeños to it to try to give it a boost as well as tried to squeeze some lime onto the dish. Underwhelming. Was it bad? No, but would I say it was great? Also no. I must admit I'm not the biggest fan of Mexican food, but I was really hoping that La Loma would impress me. Our server made this experience! My husband and I love Tex- Mex style cuisine but were underwhelmed with the food and found it expensive for what it is. For example, a small appetizer scoop of guacamole was $16. It was fresh and tasty just seemed overpriced. Same opinion of our lunches which consisted of tacos and a quesadilla. Our server was great though and I wish I got his name! He was super friendly, attentive, constantly refilling drinks and chips and just a delight!
