On my first visit, I ordered the Steak Mexicano - a ribeye smothered in green chili sauce. The steak was big, very flavorful, and very tender. Excellent. I stopped in again today for lunch. Chips, salsa (spicy but very tasty), and my drink came right out. My food was served extremely quickly. I ordered the "green chili plate," pork in green chili sauce with rice and beans. The green chili plate is available as a vegetarian option as well. I also ordered a tamale because... I just had to see how the hand crafted tamales stack up. Lovely family owner restaurant. Read so many good reviews and heard they had a vegetarian version of green chile so had to check it out. We ordered their house margarita, crispy chile replenish and cheese enchiladas. The dishes came with refried beans and rice. Everything tasted really good. After asking to be relocated to another table, as there was a security box that was buzzing extremely loudly near the entrance, we waited for 15 minutes before I got up and asked the host if we were assigned a server. The server who came to our table had passed us about 10x prior to coming up to our table and asking us, "are you ready?". I let her know we hadn't been greeted and needed to get our drink order in. Since we had waited so long, we also put in our food order but overall, a terrible way to start the meal, as it felt like we had been intentionally ignored after we asked to relocate due to the noise. Food came out super fast and hot, but the beans and rice portions seemed like 1/4 less, with me running out after one flauta. Mango margarita tasted overly of sweet & sour mix, and while it was almost a slushie it perhaps needed more ice to make it so as it came out as more of a liquid. Overall the lack of an apology for the super long wait before we got drinks put a damper on the rest of the evening. read more

Went for lunch with some coworkers. The food here was great, but the service was pretty subpar. We arrived right around when they opened so the chips were fresh and warm, which is always the best! I'm going to move this review down a star for lack of customer recognition. We've been coming here for years, Friday nights are popular for us and we often come with friends. We've found that despite our regular appearance, it's like we are new customers every time. All the staff are so polite and efficient but there is no attempt to connect or value repeat customers. We've started patronizing other local options and found that after 2-3 visits they recognize and acknowledge and engage us in a way that makes it feel like you are more than a 30 minute turn at a table. It feels like, "Hey neighbor, welcome back!" Last night was the least enjoyable experience we have had. Staff circle and circle and circle trying to turn tables and keep the flow going, to the point that it's distracting and not any fun any more to go there. It's very transactional. The manager was standing next to us staring while we were still eating trying to gauge how many more mouthfuls it would take for us to finish eating and vacate the table so they could usher another group inside. Our entire time in the restaurant was less than 45 minutes and we spent 15 minutes waiting to be sat. What they do well is deliver consistently good food delivered to your table in a flash. The staff rarely changes and they treat their staff to unusual benefits other restaurants don't offer. I appreciate all of this and that is ultimately what has fueled our continued patronage. However, it's time to spend our dollars where we are valued and welcomed because that feels good. I can get Mexican food at 1000 places in Denver, but being acknowledged as a human in this day and age is surprisingly rare. That's worth a star or two in my book. read more

Ordered the ground beef - got two large with great beans and rice. The rice was different in that it had peas in it. Really good flavor and the re-fried beans weren't "sticky"! Overall, the food itself was really tasty - definitely authentic Mexican. The flavors were great, the salsa was fresh, and the chips were thin, crisp, and perfectly salted (just how I like them). They brought out chips and salsa right away, which I appreciated. However, when we asked for more chips, we were charged $5 for an extra basket. The server did mention there would be a charge, but I didn't expect it to be that high. Where things really fell short for me was the beef in my enchilada. It was extremely mushy, almost soupy, and that really threw me off. I also barely got any rice with my plate. The beans and the rest of the enchilada were good, though. I tried a bite of my fiancé's steak tacos, and personally, I found the texture off - the meat was soft and squishy and didn't have that classic steak flavor or bite. We ordered the house margaritas during happy hour, which were delicious and strong. The only issue was the confusion around happy hour itself, since the website mentioned it but there was nothing on the menu or in the restaurant indicating what the specials actually were. We also came on National Taco Day, which happened to fall on a Tuesday, and I'd read online that they offered Taco Tuesday specials. That was honestly the main reason we chose to dine here. When we arrived, there was no mention of it. The server explained that the only "special" was getting one free taco with a taco plate, but most of the taco plates only allowed hard shell tacos, so the only qualifying option was the Taco Especiales plate (which is what my fiancé ended up ordering). The menu itself felt a bit outdated, and I had to ask several clarifying questions just to understand how the "special" worked. Overall, while the food was tasty, authentic and had good flavor, but the meat quality was disappointing, and the unclear menu and lack of advertised specials made the experience frustrating. This is kind of a little hidden gem, but kind of really well known in downtown Denver. The service is amazing. The bartenders know your name like you're going into the CHEERS Woody Harrelson knows your name but they're Mexican of course ha ha. The food is incredible well priced and it's just comfortable people interacting. You have high-level executives dining next to your barber and everyone just has great energy. Great food at affordable prices right outside of Larimer Square. I had the carnitas chimichanga, which was really good! It came with sour cream and guacamole on top. The green Chile sauce was really flavorful. The decor was lots of wood, hand painted murals and a snarky sign. Kind of a cross between a biker bar and a Mexican restaurant. The only thing I didn't like was the server said that they don't split checks. Not sure if it's a tech issue or a service issue, but it's usually a pretty simple thing to do, especially with just three people. Truly, my happy place. My brain lights up every single time I have food from here! I recommend the #5 (enchilada, burrito--beef or chicken, and chile relleno)! It hits the spot every time, sometimes I can finish it and other times not so much, but it's fire! Their chips and salsa for the table are and the guac is too! Horchata is a must, but you gotta pick what sweet you want and commit-- because the sopapillas are incredible too (just filling)! The service has always been solid and kind! They move fast and I've not really felt rushed while there, but they will keep it moving, especially when it's a busy night. Small portions (compared to most other Mexican restaurants).. Fabulous food, and the chips & salsa is the best I've ever tasted, so I've been coming to eat here every week for over 7 years, but honestly the most disappointing thing is that the rice and beans are the smallest portions I've ever seen in a Mexican restaurant in my 40+ years of traveling around the country.. I sometimes ask for no beans, double rice, but it's still basically a tiny portion of rice the size of a soup spoon, it's never a normal-sized portion and definitely not a double portion. Most Mexican places load plates up with rice and beans because they are so cheap to make, but these guys don't. They also don't have a make-your-own 2 or 3 item combination plate like most places do. You can pick from their combinations only, no substitutions. And most combo plates don't even have beans and rice at all. Five stars for deliciousness, but 1 star for portion size, (especially given how expensive it is. They even charge for chips & salsa.) I love this place, but it's so expensive and you don't ever get your money's worth. read more

My favorite meal in Denver over a week long trip! The value was incredible, all for a price so low my party gasped upon receiving the bill. Every portion was incredibly generous (not even considering price). Warm, cheery, culturally curated inner decor. It was my first time having a chimichanga (crispy burrito), which I'm disappointed about because I'm not sure how many will be as luxurious as this one. Again generously topped with guac and sour cream, with delicious insides (I asked to replace the meat with bell pepper, which still turned out to be very good), also bathed in a shallow soup. The chips were decent but the guac was exceptional. No extraneous spice mix -- great ingredients, generous portions; plain and simple. My colleague visiting from Mexico was impressed. Their house salsa was also a great spice enhancer. Highly recommend for high-quality Mexican food for a cheap price. (can't over-emphasize that it's not that the price density was good -- it was excellent food for a low price).
