I've had nothing here that wasn't passable and I crave their burgers.....so damned good! The "Saltoro Mary" is one of the best bloody marys I've had anywhere (and I order one everywhere I go!). My wife and I never miss the spinach salad with it's chunk of deep-fried brie and crisped prosciutto....perfection...the other salads are good, too. I really liked the steak frites with that super sharp cheesy buttery stuff that comes with it. The pizzettas are a bit more boring as are most of the pastas. The desserts are great...all of them! (I eat here a lot and I think I've had just about everything). The menu is a bit sparse (like most decent restaurants) so don't expect a chain restaurant 4-pager. Expect maybe 4 salads, 6 appetizers, 6 entrees, and the daily specials. My mouth is watering right now thinking about their burgers. Not at all like the garbage burgers I tried at Bick's down the street (which is odd since it's the same company!). The atmosphere here is nice, but my wife hates the wooden seats and booths. This place is so unassuming, but worth the visit! Believe all of the glowing reviews about the truffle fries- best I've ever had. Service is fantastic; our server was really friendly and helpful. She proactively offered to let us sample a wine before ordering (not a lot of places do that these days!), and they have a great, affordable feature on their wine list: 23 bottles for $23. The only reason I didn't give this place 5 stars is because the atmosphere defintiely leaves something to be desired. It feels like a generic chain restaurant inside (a la a Chiles, Applebees, etc.). That said, don't let it deter you from trying Saltoro out. You'll be glad you did. read more

Although I grew us driving by this place, I had never been until recently when a group of friends and I went here for a birthday dinner. It was a great place. Although the outside does not look like much, the inside has a great ambiance. Our waitress was super nice and dealt with us even though we were the rowdy group in the corner - I have a feeling we were much louder than your average group. The wine selection was great and service was amazing. Amongst our group, we tried quite the range of dishes: the truffle fries were amazing along with the shrimp appetizer. Most of the main dishes were great, especially the chicken and halibut but the pastas were nothing to write home about. But the smoked salmon had great flavor. I would give it 5 stars if I had been more impressed with the pastas as everything else was amazing. Definitely try the truffle fries and the sea-salt chicken if you go. It's to die for! My girlfriend and I came here for our 2 year anniversary a few days ago. We'd been here about a week before for a birthday dinner and absolutely had to come back. Tina was our server on the night in question, and she is incredible at what she does. She kept a conversation going with us, was incredibly friendly and just the right amount of attentive. The food was to die for, too. The Saltoro burger (got mine mid-rare) is easily the best burger of my adult life. The Pappardelle was outstanding as well, the sauce is not too rich but full of flavor. Plus, we were able to buy a bottle of champagne for the table for a measly $25. Will always recommend this spot to friends and family. read more

What a find! Drive a bit out of the Ballard/Crown Hill and found this gem on Greenwood. Food was well prepared (downright delicious!) and we had an amazing waitress with a matching attitude (wish I caught her name, black bob with bangs). Definitely a locals place to eat and I can see why it's so busy ... Parking was a pain and we almost didn't go in since we were having such a problem finding street parking (their parking lot is small and packed!) but glad we gave it one more try because I would have been sad to have missed this one. read more

Yet another review I'm writing that will no doubt be placed under the carpet of Yelp and no one will see because this website is convinced I'm not a real human... Anyway, I stopped into this little place the other day and was pleasantly surprised. The interior is cozy without being the old rundown look some restaurants try to pass off as "cozy." I sat at the bar and had a glass of wine, and their selection was pretty good. I had the salad with proscuitto and brie. It was delicious and the greens tasted very fresh. I had the sea salt chicken and it was cooked to perfection, with the slightly bitter greens on the plate pairing perfectly with the rich and sweet rosemary sauce that came on the chicken. I had the thick chocolate pots de creme for dessert and it was rich and hot. I would give it three and a half stars if i could. The negatives were that this place is a bit over priced and the service wasn't very prompt as I had to wait for awhile for refills and the bartender only checked back to make sure my main course was alright but seemed to be missing for the other two. Also the food took awhile to come out, especially the dessert. Other than those negative marks I would recommend people in the neighborhood give this place a try...or I would recommend it if Yelp actually allowed people to see my reviews. read more

I really like this place, it's close to home, and it's open late. We go less than once a month, but the waitress recognizes us and is always friendly. The truffle fries are great, and I really like the mushroom pizza. My husband loves the molten chocolate cake, which is quite tasty. What do you do when the food you ordered is just yuck? Not like steak is over cooked or order was wrong but like everything on the table was just gross. We started with the calamari...it was like eating rubber bands. Obviously previously frozen and breading was not crunchy at all and didnt have any seasoning. We picked out the fried chickpeas and ate those. Hubby ordered the Portuguese stew, he gave it a 4/10. Again seafood tasted like it was previously frozen. I ordered the smoked salmon pasta. It looked good but tasted like a bowl of wet nothing. No seasoning at all! But I did pick out and ate all the grape tomatoes because at least those had flavor. A previous reviewer "Jessica G" said her food was too close to Hamburger Helper. I wish I would have just stayed home and made some Hamburger Helper, $60 dinner for less than mediocre previously frozen seafood. Two raviolis. That's what I got when I ordered dinner here. Two normal-sized raviolis. To be fair, they were swimming in a boatload of cream sauce and a handful of sliced mushrooms (so I didn't realize there were only two until I'd eaten one of them - half my meal.) I'm an average-sized, 125# girl, but there's no way this would have filled me up unless I'd had my stomach stapled down to walnut-size. If it had been listed under the "small plates" menu, I guess I could understand... or maybe if I was doing a contestant tasting on Top Chef... but two raviolis for, like, $10? Yikes. My companions all had normal-sized meals as far as I could tell, so I'm not sure what happened here. If I ever go again, I'll be sure to ask the size of the portion before I order anything on the menu. read more

First let me say that my husband and I REALLY wanted to like this place. We love finding new, nearby, locally owned restaurants, and had hoped that this was another gem. Instead it was an overpriced, super bland meal with mediocre service. Oh well. We came in on a Saturday night, and it was very slow. The waitress sat us, took our drink order, and left to let us look over the menu...and look...and look...and look... Mind you, it wasn't like she was busy, she was simply talking to the other staff members. Finally, my husband actually got up and asked her if we could order (I was ready to walk out at that point). She admitted she had totally forgotten about us, and promised us a free dessert (she obviously felt bad, and mistakes happen, so not a huge deal). We ordered the calamari and two of the specials, the lamb with dirty rice and Portuguese seafood stew (which our waitress declared her favorite dish). The calamari was fine, nothing to write home about, and really needed the lemon that came along with it. The husband asked for his rack of lamb to come medium , and it was far more like medium rare to rare. The "dirty rice" was so awful neither of us could eat more than a mouthful. A pile of underseasoned white rice that seemed like it had been overcooked and then left out on a counter for a few days. The texture was unlike any rice I'd ever had....in a bad way (and the husband eats EVERYTHING, so it was pretty amazing to me he left such a huge part of his meal uneaten). Let's talk about the seafood 'stew.' I imagine this is the recipe: take the house marinara and/or some tomato soup, add some water and 1/8th of a teaspoon of paprika. Add a few clams, a prawn, and some scraps (seriously, they were scraps) of whatever fish is lying around. Before serving, throw in a whole sausage split down the middle (don't ask me why it wasn't sliced) and some undercooked red potatoes. I could not stop pouring salt in this dish. Everything we had was bland, but this took the cake. (Speaking of, our molten chocolate cake was, like the calamari, fine, but not anything to rave about). I realize this review is super long....it's just that this whole experience was so disappointing. If you want incredible New American food, for about the same price, with fantastic service (and is local and sustainable on top of all that), go to the Stumbling Goat Bistro. read more

Great lamb burger, but the lavender ribs...whaaa? I had one bite (dry, overcooked, practically all bone) then brought the rest home and fed it to my dog. Service is good...sometimes. Unfortunately, the last time I ate there (emphasis on LAST), it sucked. I was one of the first customers in the door (6pm or so) and they seated my friend and me in a booth. About an hour later, we had finished dinner but were still working on our wine. Without even offering dessert, our waitress came over to our precious booth and told us we would have to "finish up" because they "needed the booth". Hmm, as I recall, you seated us here. We didn't ask to sit here. Now you're rushing us through our $8 glasses of wine? How rude! Same owners as Bick's, right down the street. Bick's is fantastic; Saltoro's is like the annoying little brother that needs a good, hard spanking. I hear they've undergone a huge remodel. Needless to say, I haven't been there yet to check it out... UPDATE 5/8/2007 Been a couple times in the past month. The remodel is terrific!! And the menu is revamped and looks a lot more like Bick's menu. Had a great salad and my service was terrific. Wow! I can't that I just found out about this place last night. This is a neighborhood restaurant with food a cut above the usual neighborhood fare, but still at neighbourly prices. We shared the Saltoro salad, duck confit, butternut squash ravioli and a pizzetta. Everything was soooo good. The pizzetta was thin crust with the perfect amount of crispness. The butternut squash ravioli was substantial, 3 large ravioli's with enough squash stuffing that you could tell it was squash, covered in a mushroom cream sauce. Yum, yum, yum. read more

WOW! I love this place. Came her with my BFF on Saturday night for a late dinner. Had a great Spanish white wine with my meal. I tried the spinach salad and the white truffle and shrimp pasta. Both were delicious, but portions were pretty small. My only gripe is that they don't serve you bread with your meal, but I'm sure if you asked for some, they would willingly bring it. This place is great! I had the salt and pepper chicken. There were bites that were salty at first (it is in the name) but it melted away into a delicious combination of complex flavors. The service is prompt and friendly without hovering or being intrusive. They provide educated answers to any menu related questions. The drink selection is great and the signature cocktails are innovative. The butternut squash raviolis are like nothing you've ever had from the grocery store or on the menue of a chain restaurant. One of our favorite places, and we don't even live in the neighborhood. In fact, I wish we had a place like this in Magnolia. It achieves the perfect balance of good food, nice atmosphere, without being pretentious and fussy. I've tried several items and the food never disappoints. Wine and food prices are also very reasonable for the quality. Last week I had the halibut with hazelnut crust and it was really delicious. The potatoes could have been cooked a bit longer, but I was already pretty full after trying a few of the steamed clams we all shared as an appetizer, so I didn't care. Recently moving up to Broadview from Dexter/Westlake area, I've been looking for local eating and watering holes to frequent close to home...alas, I've got one! Our server was friendly and helpful when making selections (lamb burger, roasted chicken, shrimp linguine, truffle fries were all great!) and our everyone at my table enjoyed the meal and thought it was reasonably priced. My boyfriend commented that this would be a great place to come to on a friday night after a long work week for drinks and a good meal...without having to commute down to Greenwood, Ballard, and the like. Some of the best Italian food I've ever eaten. The arancini was absolutely the best, it had a bit of a twist from the traditional recipes in Sicily, I would go back just for this alone and my son agreed. I also had the beet salad- gold and purple beets, it had just a hint of horse radish, along with the dressing it was such a refreshing surprise. My main dish was the Salmon Garganelli with pasta, yummy beyond when seafood tastes like it came right out of the ocean. My son had the steak frites with fries fried in truffle oil, he said it was the best he's had in a long time and the steak cooked the way he ordered it. This is in a part of town without many restaurants, especially any decent ones. This is the real deal, with good food and bar. Often crowded and prices are medium. It looks a little like a pub on the inside with mostly wooden booths and some tables, with a large bar visible from everywhere. The mirror by the bathrooms make you wonder what you've been eating. Staff is friendly. Food is usually quick enough, but occasionally it ends up taking 15-20 minutes. Truffle Fries are a must (and I absolutely do not eat mushrooms of any kinds. The smell of them makes me ill, but apparently these fries cooked in truffle oil do not contain any of the offensive parts of the truffle, which is every part. I don't know, they somehow manage to be good). Garganelli pasta or the pizzas are great. Salads are so-so and they don't have fountain drinks (just tiny pepsi products in plastic bottles). read more
