Is there a reason these aren't all 5 star reviews? This place is on another level and delivered on all levels. We loved the quaintness and character of this restaurant. The waiter was on top of everything but also provided excellent recommendations. And then there's the food... We had many different menu items and all were spectacular. Some highlights were the peas, the fresh tomatoes, and the asparagus. The pastas have been on the menu for 18 years and for good reason! The eggs yolk pasta was my favorite - rich but amazing. The other two following it on the menu were lights out as well. I felt the pork was a standout then I had the salmon and couldn't decide which was better. It didn't matter and a good problem to have! Legendary reviews had me coming in with pretty high expectations. The ambiance is lovely. Low lighting, walls lined with wine bottles, and an intimate atmosphere that feels cozy without being cramped. Even though the restaurant wasn't particularly busy during our visit, our server was extremely quiet and difficult to hear, which made communication a bit challenging. One nice touch was the complimentary bread service, which came with a generous amount of butter. We started with the artichokes from the seasonal menu. I was expecting them to be served warm or roasted, but they arrived cold, which was admittedly a misunderstanding on my part. The accompanying sauce was excellent though and definitely saved the dish for me. We also ordered the tajarin al ragù, one of the restaurant's signature dishes. Unfortunately, this was where my expectations and experience diverged. The pasta felt under-seasoned to me, and the noodles seemed overcooked. Rather than the silky texture I was hoping for, I found myself eating what felt like clumps of dough. It was a dish I really wanted to love given its reputation, but it just didn't click for me. We weren't looking for a heavy dinner, so we only ordered a couple of items. It's entirely possible we came on an off night or simply didn't choose the restaurant's strongest dishes. I will forever dream of this place for the rest of my life. Make the reservation. A girlfriend and I tried to book 2 weeks out and it was fully booked. A couple hours later, I checked again and there was 1 cancellation. I am SO glad we had the opportunity to try this place. It's small, so would be difficult for large parties. Our server was wonderful and very knowledgeable. The food was INCREDIBLE. Like close your eyes, and feel all the emotions while you're eating incredible. There was not a single dish I didn't enjoy. We had been meaning to come here for a while and our out-of-town guest visiting was a perfect excuse! When I made the reservations a few weeks prior, the only one I could get was on the patio. This actually turned out to be wonderful because we were the only ones on the patio and there were heat lamps. The menu focuses on Piemontese (I.e., Northern Italian) dishes, and so the dishes don't feature tomatoes or many of the ingredients you may be used to seeing in Italian dishes. We started with the insalata verde and the carciofi appetizers, both of which were incredible. My friend and I each got the cavatelli with morels and my spouse got the tajarin with ragu. Our server told us that they make the tajarin in-house and the two tajarin dishes are mainstays on the menu. And while the tajarin was wonderful, I preferred the cavatelli. read more

We had our final dinner in Seattle at Spinasse and twas a wonderful time. First off, Spinasse gives Capitol Hill from the moment you enter. It's minimally furnished with just the right amount of ambient lighting. Secondly, it's Italian, but Piedmontese Italian if that means anything to you. We started with crespelle ($29) which is an Italian crepe. The version we ordered was stuffed with prosciutto and parmigiana fonduta with arugula salad. The crepe was light and airy and paired perfectly with the salty prosciutto and parm. Perfect starter. Honestly, all the pastas we ordered were absolute fire. Of the three, I liked the Tajarin Al ragù ($20/$34) the most. It's a fine hand-cut egg yolk pasta with pork and beef ragù. The pasta is so finely cut; it's delicate. What I liked best was the way the ragù sauce enveloped itself into the folds of the pasta. Each bite was cohesive and really intentional. The risotto was also quite good as well - that night, it was the risotto ai gamberi ($21/$35) which highlight spot prawns. The spot prawns were sweet and the Calabrian chili was a really nice complement to the sweet and creamy. Delish. I'm sure the risotto is great in any season. I must say - the best thing about the menu is the fact that you can order a smaller portion of any of the pasta dishes as to not have to fully commit to one. This is a superb way to eat. It's been a while since my last visit many years ago, same amazing experience. We were seated promptly and the service was outstanding throughout the dinner. We got the tajarin burro e salvia and tajarin al ragù, both exceptional, really really good. Then my wife got the capesante cotte nel burro, which she liked, and I got the maiale brasato al latte, which was absolutely fabulous, melt in your mouth tender meat. I loved it. Let me start by saying that this meal for both myself and my husband was one of the best we have ever had. The interior of the restaurant is cozy and simplistic, not too pretentious, and definitely allows you to settle in and enjoy without feeling stiff. First of all, our server (I think his name was Alfredo but my deepest apologies if I am mistaken) was super sweet and attentive. The front of house manager also brought us an amouse bouche at the beginning of our meal and was also super kind and clearly takes pride in his work. He even brought us another one because my husband loved it so much! Our server recommended a wine that was perfect for my palate and paired well with the meal we ordered and my husband's cocktail was balanced and delicious even for a non bourbon drinker like me. We ordered the cabbage appetizer, which was like a more exciting and fresher take on a caesar salad, and was quite good. Then, we had the special risotto with lamb sausage. I would have absolutely done unspeakable things for more of that risotto. It was indescribable. We also ordered the halibut and polenta, and the fish was cooked to the perfect temp and well seasoned. Neither of us typically lean toward polenta as a menu option but if all polenta tasted like this that might change! Update to my last review 14 years ago... Yes, still fantastic in all the ways I described years ago. Even the prices seem to not be out of sight and the atmosphere and food are fantastic. That said, I don't like setting in the area by the door and always request to be seated in the original restrauant space to the left of the entrance for a more subdued and romantic atmosphere. Tempted to eat everything on the menu for the $120/person, but we ate just about everything we liked and was absolutely stuffed. For the first time patrons you must eat a half portion of the Tajarin Con Burro E Salvia and the Tajarin Al Ragu. As in "Top Gun" don't think just do. The waiter, Brent picked out a wine and it was fantastic as I posted a photo for that bottle of Barbra D'Asti DOCG Superiore Ca'DiPian 2023. Parking just beside the resturant for $4/hr. They reserve the counter for walk-ins, but I would make a reservation and request to be seated in the original resturant space away from the front door reception area for more romantic atmosphere. read more

Celebrated a birthday here last night. We ordered the tasting menu for $120/person and was a great deal. So much delicious food and you don't leave feeling hungry. You actually leave feeling extremely stuffed! I loved every item we were served (that I could eat at least. I was too full to finish everything). My favorite was the stuffed onions, which went very well with the bread, as well as the ragu pasta. The fried chicken also had such a delicious, crispy but delicate skin. Service was similarly great. Eric was great at explaining things and giving tips for the meal. No complaints. As for ambiance, it was still decorated for Christmas with wreaths and pine garlands. I liked how cozy and romantic the place felt. No big lights here, only candles and small yellow bulbs. It is a pretty small space though so tables are pretty close together. It was very easy to eavesdrop on others so would not recommend hosting a very private convo here. I am giving a 4/5 stars though because VERY soon after eating I got an upper stomachache and diarrhea that I do not suspect is from eating too much. I'm not sure how this happened as I don't think anything was raw or undercooked. I came around 5pm on a Saturday without a reservation. The line was already out the door. When I made it to the front, I was told that 7:30pm would be the first available spot for a walk-in. I had a feeling it wouldn't take that long, so I gave them my contact information, and went to a local cafe in the meantime. Sure enough, I received a text at 6:30pm that they had a spot for me. The restaurant is cozy and welcoming. It has an open kitchen concept that lets you watch their team prepare dishes throughout the night. I started with a half portion of the tajarin con burro e salvia (fine-cut egg yolk pasta with cultured butter and sage). I liked how it was simple, yet very flavorful. Next, was a half portion of the risotto alla barbabietola con La Tur (roasted beet risotto with la Tur cheese). La Tur is a blend of cow, goat, and sheep milk, and its creamy and rich flavor complemented the beet risotto. For a side dish, I opted for the carote arrostite con salvia (roasted carrots with sage). Unfortunately, some of the carrots lacked flavor, while others tasted a bit too charred. Finally for dessert, I enjoyed four scoops of the nectarine tarragon sorbet. It was light, fruity, refreshing, and not too sweet. If I come back in the future, I will try to arrive before 5pm to minimize the wait time. Adam our server was so kind and helped us curate our order to make our first time at Spinasse a night to remember. Our order with pictures in order: 1.) Cavatelli al guanciale; pasta with pork, garlic, and kale. A great compliment to the butter and sage pasta, the pork being so soft and flavorful. 2.) the Cavolfiore con bagna caoda; a roasted cauliflower with an anchovy sauce and lemon. Did not think that a vegetable could be the star of the show, but with that sauce, it was our favorite. Loaded with flavor, every bite was perfect 3.) Tajarin con burro e salvia; butter and sage pasta. The fine cut literally melted in your mouth, best to eat first while it's warm. I had heard and read enough about Spinasse to arrive with real expectations. I showed up fifteen minutes before opening on a Thursday, no reservation, and found only a handful of others waiting. Got a seat at the bar without issue, which is always my preferred way to dine solo. From the first moment the hospitality was warm, engaged, and genuinely attentive. The bartender who took care of me throughout the evening set the tone immediately. Approachable, knowledgeable, present without hovering. The space itself matches that energy. Beautiful and considered without being stiff or self-important. An Aperol Spritz to open, well made, and the evening was underway. They started with a complimentary amuse bouche, a small but meaningful gesture that signals a kitchen paying attention. Bread followed and it was exactly what good bread should be, fresh, rustic, full of flavor. Then the Salsa all'uovo con cavolo arrived. Rich, earthy, and deeply savory, with the bitterness of the cabbage playing beautifully against the velvety egg sauce. Sophisticated without being fussy. The pacing between courses was handled exceptionally well, something that matters more than most restaurants seem to realize. The cavatelli con spugnole landed next. Rich, perfectly balanced, the kind of pasta dish that reminds you why handmade matters. Then the Salsiccia di agnello in pasta sfoglia, a lamb sausage in puff pastry that walked the line between buttery and flaky on the outside and deeply savory and herbaceous within. Notably they served the jus on the side so you could add as needed without risking a soggy pastry. Thoughtful execution. On the wine side I put myself in the bartender's hands for a white and a red to pair across the meal. Both were spot on. Their Italian list is well curated with strong options by the glass. A panna cotta to close was a clean, quiet finish to a meal that needed no grand statement to land. Spinasse is exceptional without ever reminding you that it is. This place kind of a rustic feel feel to it but serves high quality food. They fave us a complimentary cracker with butter than anchovy on it. It was delicious and I wish I could order more. This restaurant is famous for their northern Italian thin pasta made with plenty of egg yolks. I got their signature one with butter and sage - fantastic. You can taste the egginess from the simplicity of the sauce. Next was the same pasta but with pork and beef ragu. The ragu itself was good but unfortunately, it just covered the delicacy of the pasta taste and this ragu could have just been on any pasta and would taste good. It is just wasted on the tajarin. The third one I tried was the cavatelli with braised short ribs. I'm not sure if the cavatelli was also made with the same dough as the tajarain but again the meat sauce covered all the intrinsic flavor of the pasta. The braised short ribs is definitely good but I could have had this on rice and it would be just as good. I would come to try their original butter sage tarajin. They gave complimentary bread. I guess in Italy butter does not come with bread but it felt dry just eating it so we asked for some and they were happy to provide some. My only gripe is that it is $33 for a dish that is not filling. My friend and I shared 3 pastas and it still wasn't filling. That means about $60+ a person for dinner at a not to high end restaurant. read more

Whenever I give Italian food in other cities a chance, I'm always left a little disappointed. Not to say the food or service at Cascina Spinasse was bad, but the only real standout was the pasta. Coming in, my partner and I were quickly seated near the window for our reservation. The vibe is cozy, casual, approachable. Our waiter, a jolly and attentive fellow, gave us the rundown that Spinasse is proudly Northern Italian, highlighting the best of what Piedmont has to offer. He was very informative and gave us a few recommendations. To start the meal, we were given complimentary bites of sardines on toast. Pretty good and not fishy. Then we got the antipasto misto della casa which is a sampler plate of four different appetizers: prosciutto with melon, cucumber salad, another salad (forgot what it was), and the chickpea salad. And an order of the fried squash blossoms. The appetizers were the definition of mid. The best appetizer was the squash blossoms but not by a large margin. The pastas, the tajarin and cavatelli, were much better. The tajarin, thin cut egg noodles, were the perfect texture and the way it's served traps the steam inside of the pasta making it perfectly piping hot when it reaches the table. I preferred the butter sage one which is simply tasty but I also enjoyed the pork and beef ragú version which surprisingly tasted like it had cheese in it when it didn't. The cavatelli was also tasty with a nice chew. To have with our meal, we opted for some wine that was picked out by our server. While the wine profiles matched what we described as our ideal wine, they fell flat for us. They weren't unique and were pretty one note. But at least we ended on a high note with the pinenut tart with roasted plum and sage gelato which tasted nutty, herbaceous, and balanced. As someone who has had better Italian food for less than half the price, and has also had better Northern Italian food for double the price I paid at Spinasse, my conclusion is this: Spinasse has decent pasta but not much else. If you go, get a large portion of pasta and a dessert. Seattle is not the place to go to get Italian food. read more

We came by around 5 PM on a Wednesday with no reservation and were seated after about a 20-minute wait, which wasn't bad at all! The service here is amazing--super attentive and friendly the whole time. We started with the four-appetizer tray. The prosciutto with melon and the salad were our favorites and definitely worth ordering. The hummus with corn and cucumber with goat cheese were just okay. One thing we really loved is that you can get half portions of pasta, which is perfect for trying different dishes. The ragu and butter & sage pasta were the standouts--so flavorful with incredible texture. The fine hand-cut pasta with pork and beef was the only one we'd probably skip next time. For drinks, the lavender gin cocktail was a hit, while the hibiscus vermouth was just alright. We ended with the baba al rhum. The mousse and nectarine were really good, but the rum flavor was a little strong for us. Overall, fantastic experience with amazing service and some seriously delicious pasta. We got 3 pasta dishes to share (2 half order size and 1 full size) and it was more than enough. My boyfriend took me to this restaurant for a late Valentine's Day dinner celebration. We had been wanting to try it for a while, and luckily he was able to score a reservation. Upon entering the restaurant, we were led to our table by the host, who was very kind and showed us where the bathrooms were located and where we could hang our coats. The whole ambiance was nice and cozy, and the staff seemed very attentive. When we were given the menu, I'm not going to lie, it looked very overwhelming. But after overhearing a server explain the menu to an equally confused couple, my boyfriend and I understood how to approach it. We ended up getting a couple of Negroni cocktails, the Cipollini Ripieni, and two of the pastas our server recommended, half Tajarin con Burro e Salvia and half Tajarin al Ragù. For our secondi, we ordered the Guancia di Manzo Brasata al Barolo. Everything came out in a timely manner and was absolutely delicious. The portions were perfect for the two of us. We especially loved how juicy the Cipollini Ripieni was. The pastas were also our favorites. We were thankful to have ordered half portions of each because we were already getting full before our last dish arrived. The pasta was so good, we loved the texture, and it's amazing that it's all made in house. From where we were sitting, we could partially see the chefs cooking, which was very cool. We loved the intimate dining experience. Our secondi was possibly my all time favorite dish of the night. The Guancia di Manzo Brasata al Barolo was so tender, it melted in your mouth. The purée was delicious, and the pomegranates complemented the flavors beautifully. As full as we were from all the delicious food, we still made a little room for dessert because we wanted to make sure their desserts were just as good as their savory dishes. We were debating between two options but ultimately chose the Pera Millefoglie. When the server brought our dessert, she also surprised us with the Zuppa Inglese con Mele we had been considering. She was so sweet and said it was on the house because she knew we were stuck between the two and wanted us to experience both. The desserts were amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed the creaminess and sweetness of each. Not only was the food an incredible experience, but we are also thankful for our server for being so attentive, as well as the other staff who promptly cleared our plates. Our water glasses were always refilled, and the table was quickly cleaned after each course. This experience was absolutely worth it. I can see why reservations are hard to get. Recently moved a friend to Seattle, so we've been eating our way through the city and were able to get reservations at Spinasse. We arrived right on time for our reservation and seated immediately. Our waiter came by shortly after and walked us through the menu; you will have to order everything at once to help the kitchen, but that wasn't an issue for us. There was a gift from the kitchen, which was a crostini with butter and an anchovy on top. Perfect amount of savory/salty, and definitely a must try! Bread was brought to the table shortly after which was a nice surprise. For an appetizer, we got an order of the prosciutto di parma. The prosciutto is as sliced in house and topped with a melon-- absolutely delicious! We decided not to do the degustazione (which is essentially trying everything on the antipasto, primo and secondo) because it seemed like a lot of food! Instead, our party of four split two orders of the cavatelli which was absolutely divine. The sauce was savory, creamy and the short rib just melted. My friend and I split the lombatello (hanger steak with smoked eggplant-polenta frittele and salsa verde). The steak is more on the rare side (I don't remember the waiter asking how we wanted it prepared) but it was still delicious. The eggplant polenta was so good and probably my favorite thing of the night! The other two people in our party shared the Maiale brass to al latte (milk braised pork with herbs and pan-roasted semolina gnocco) and said it was absolutely fantastic. It looked like a huge portion of pork and polenta smothered in a creamy sauce. While it's not on the menu, there were four options for beer so if you are a beer drinker I would ask your waiter! I had the Sulla spiaggia which is a rum based cocktail. Would definitely get this again as it was the perfect balance of sweet and spice. The best feeling is trying a new dish and instantly knowing you'll be back for more, and that's exactly how I felt about the butter and sage pasta. It was light, silky, and the angel hair was super delicate. I could've easily eaten two bowls. We also ordered the Cavatelli al Guanciale as a vegetarian option, and it was coated in a light, garlicky, buttery sauce that felt super comforting. The black truffle risotto was solid, but not quite as standout as the other dishes. I also appreciate that you can order half portions and try out more options that way! Finished with tiramisu, which totally hit the spot. Great spot right in the heart of Cap Hill. We were able to grab bar seats as a walk-in, but I'd recommend making a reservation if you're coming during peak hours. read more

If you can get a reservation, you won't be sorry. This is THE place to get Tajarin con Burro e Salvia (butter and sage pasta) that melts in your mouth. A small portion makes for a good starter for two. The ambiance is romantic and depending on your table you can see the pasta being made. Never gets too loud and the service is impeccable. read more

I'm doing this review weeks after my Seattle trip because of how amazing the experience was! The entrees were already memorable, but the service was absolutely unforgettable. Our salmon had a few small bones (which we didn't mind at all because it was delicious) so we put them aside on the plate. The waiter noticed the bones on the plate, and the chef was "so embarrassed" that they decided to comp the entire salmon entree. We have never had any restaurant comp a meal based on finding a few bones on a plate; wow! Let me be honest, the food was already 5 stars so I wish I could give it 6 stars. We ordered the Antipasto Misto Della Casa which included all of their appetizers. This was good but not our favorite dish; I'd recommend skipping the appetizers here honestly. Instead of the appetizers, I'd recommend just ordering the Duck Confit Crespelle which was absolutely phenomenal! Our favorite savory crepe we've ever had. Both of the entrees we ordered were excellent. The salmon had a crispy, thick skin and flavorful meat. The egg pasta was equally great with the most tender, delicious noodles we've ever had. The dessert (Chocolate Torta) was good but I'd recommend focusing stomach space on the entrees and crepe. read more
