I have had a lot of fried chicken in my life, and made a lot of fried chicken myself, and Roost makes me want to never eat fried chicken again if it's not at Roost. We started with the pimento cheese, with crispy chips to dip. Then we might have gotten a little overly ambitious and decided to split the half chicken between the two of us, but it smelled so damn good in there our self restraint went out the window. Everything is fried perfectly, the meat is juicy beyond belief--even the breast, which by the way is the size of your face. Can't get over how good this fried chicken is. Sure, I could feel my arteries clogging in real time but I didn't even care. The mac and cheese is a great side, the biscuits are solid. The collards are a little meh, but all is forgiven because this place is a dream. And it's all reasonably priced as well. Will definitely come back once I eat salad for a good month. read more

Called a bunch of times to place a to go order. Unfortunately, no one answered each time. Ended up getting chicken from somewhere else.

Criminally overrated. Chicken was cooked properly, but absolutely no seasoning in the batter. Biscuits taste like they almost tried to remove the flavor from them. Got the 1/2 fried basket with Mac and cheese and fries. Mac and cheese was just noodles with thin cheese sauce with a couple of chunks of bacon in it and the fries were very forgettable. I really don't like being negative on here but at a $18 price point I really feel the need to steer you away. I went in this afternoon with my boyfriend and ordered food. An order of chicken and waffles and 3 strip chicken meal. It took 45 minutes for it to come out AND it was incorrect. They apparently ran out of chicken but didn't think it was worth mentioning. What kind of establishment doesn't think it's worth mentioning to your customers that you ran out of chicken? I saw an employee pull up after about 25 minutes of waiting, with chicken in her car bringing it through the back door of the kitchen. After almost waiting for an hour I went and asked where our food was. The girl looked puzzled when I gave her my boyfriends name (they asked for a first name and last name initial) as she checked the tickets placed in front of her and went out back to check. I could hear someone in the kitchen saying "it's the next order." 10 minutes later, the girl who we placed out order with comes out with our food bagged. She stated what the order was which my boyfriend caught - which wasn't incorrect / none of the food we received was correct. He at that point asked for a refund, he spoke to the manager on duty. This was a great first place to visit when we were on vacation in the area. We headed here due to some awesome Yelp reviews from others and the easy drive from our hotel to here! The parking is around back and the construction out front made it kinda hard to navigate - but this is a temporary thing, so it's not worth knocking a star for it. The lobby is really cute and has high top counter seats and low tables. There is also a space outside with seating if you wanted that option! We had the chicken bucket with two sides, which was more than enough for the two of us. We opted out on dessert cause we were too full, but they had some ice cream options. I had higher expectations for this place, but I found the chicken to be just alright. The coleslaw was also pretty meh. I did like the fried okra, but mine was hot when I got it. Delicious chicken and super friendly service. In town on business, I decided to order the Roost Chicken Tenders, Macaroni, and a Biscuit to go. I used their online portal, and it worked great! I must admit, I really regretted ordering to go once I arrived because Roost is ADORABLE. Complete with a lovely, intimate outdoor patio, this seat yourself style restaurant is really killing the fast casual game. I loved everything about it. The Chicken Tenders were perfectly seasoned and delicious - fried, but without being too dry or greasy. I sampled their honey mustard and come back sauce and both were very good. The Macaroni and Cheese was also very yummy - I just wish there was more bacon and green onion beyond the top layer (but realize this may have been carry-out related). The biscuit was soft and came apart easily without being doughy. All around, this is a spot you won't want to miss if you're in Bozeman. Oh, and don't be like me - stay for the scenery! read more

So underwhelming I wish I could give it zero stars. I ordered the chicken strip meal, with cheesy grits, and my kids both ordered 2 piece meals with different sides. Can't say it's the best fried chicken I've ever had but it was damn good!.. all of us in the party agreed. The chicken was moist and cooked just right. The skin was crunchy and well flavored. The okra and the biscuits were just ok. "The chick stick"- chicken thigh on a stick that I got flavored Nashville Hot was amazing and chicken remained moist and cooked just as well as the fried chicken. This may be the best darn fried chicken on the planet. Really! We were road tripping back to the Minne-apple and needed a lunch stop. Thanks to the Yelp app we found Roost and reached out to a friend who's a local to join us. The prices seemed a bit high at first until 1) we saw the serving size and 2) tasted the food. The Hubster and I ordered beers (Haybag Hefeweizen and Pinner Throwback IPA) and consulted the menu. We each ordered a half chicken (yes, maybe we just should have ordered a whole chicken; duh). The half chicken is served with two side dishes. Between the two of us we had loaded grits, coleslaw, mac-n-cheese and collards. Our friend showed up about five minutes before the food. He explained that he had tried to get in Roost on three separate occasions, each time was told the wait was at least 30 minutes. He was beside himself that we *just* showed up, got a table and was told the food would be ready in ten minutes (which it was). He had already had lunch but HAD to try the chicken. We might have been spoiled. The chicken was perfectly seasoned, crispy and moist. There wasn't even a hint of grease. I ate more chicken than I usually do and thoroughly enjoyed the sides. The mac-n-cheese was creamy and cheesy; better than Mom's (shh, don't tell). The collards were very yummy and bright in flavor. The genius in our lunch plans was that our buddy - being local - could take home the pieces of chicken that we couldn't finish. I mean, if I had the afternoon to nap, I would have given the Clean Plate Club a run for its money. As it was we had to get back on the road. We stopped in to Roost after a day of fishing. The fried chicken is incredible, crunchy and crispy on the inside, juicy and moist on the inside. The mashed potatoes were good, the mac and cheese, was creamy and cheesy with bacon on top. The okra was just okay and I wouldn't get it again. The restaurant is very casual. I tried calling multiple times upon opening (11am) and nothing..so I decided to walk in, 20 minutes of waiting in line and one of the workers asks, "Does anyone have a to-go order?"..the guys in front of me were talking to each other saying how they tried to call 10 times with no luck either. Got the sweet heat chicken sandwich and the piece they gave me was so small it was more of a over cooked chicken tender, and the bun had been left on the grill for so long it fell apart when I took a bite. Moved here a couple months and everyone said to try this place. To be honest, it is just okay. The first time we went we got the chicken strips and they were nothing to write home about. The only thing that saved them was their "comeback sauce". The wait was also very long when ordering in person, so I recommend ordering online and picking it up. The second time we tried the fried chicken instead and it was actually delicious! Nicely seasoned and crispy without being dry. However, the sides need a lot of work here. Delicious chicken in all forms. They got chicken n waffles, sandwiches, tenders and more! Also serve ice cold beers and a neat little building they are based out of. Different styles and sauces for the chicken as well. I typically get the Nashville hot fried chicken sandwich, which is so good! Crispy breading but tender and juicy. This place is pretty good. The fried chicken sandwich is what you really go for! The greens need to be finished with some apple cider vinegar they would be that much better. If you like spicy and hot go with the Nashville hot. If you do not like hot then get the regular chicken sandwich. The pecan pie was really good as well! The sweet tea is on point just add a lemon! Had this place on the map for quite awhile , living in another state and chasing " Diners Drive Inns & Dives around the Pacific Northwest I finally got here . I had the 1/2 chicken dinner , cooked " Nashville Hot " on recommendation from the sweet girl at the counter . I ordered the Mac & Cheese , and fries for my sides , they were both good , not great, but the mac & cheese was better than a lot that I have had . The Chicken came out quickly and was piping hot, not sure at first if it was spicy hot or cooking hot. After a couple minutes it became apparent it was both , I liked it. Service was very good and prompt , the counter girl appeared to be new but smiled and did a nice job. Came in hungry and left quite full . will be back again , maybe for lunch next time read more

I'm giving Roost 3 stars for the delightful staff they have. The original chicken leaves much to be desired. I can't say how disappointed I was. Poorly seasoned and over cooked. Why there is occasionally a line here I don't understand. Have people never eaten Albertsons fried chicken? Writing this as a Southern transplant (Atlanta to Bozeman). I got the chicken sandwich, no fries, fried okra and collards with sweet tea to drink. First, and most important, the sweet tea was on point. Second, the chicken was a bit thin, but cooked well with a decent batter. They need to leave off the shredded lettuce and let the breading, chicken and sauce do their job. The bun was what I would expect from a chicken shack -- the standard bun for Southern BBQ joints (and Chick Fil A). Third, the okra was good but didn't give me confidence that it was prepared (cut, breaded, etc) in house. Fourth, the greens were better than I expected to find in Montana. They're missing a seasoning, which is evident in the corn liquor -- it should be tasty, not just flavored water. Last, the cost. In the South, what I purchased would cost about $5 less at any BBQ joint worth it's weight. I intentionally didn't get the fries because anyone can do fries; I wanted to test their Southern skills. Overall, I will be back because while it's not Chick Fil A, it will be the closest thing I'll find here and the food was good overall. Thanks for reading! read more
