We put off trying this place for a long time because the prices are so high. But their sandwiches are pretty big so we finally bit the bullet and gave it a shot. Totally overrated. The sandwiches are bland, the rolls are grocery store quality at best, and the service is very slow. Unique little spot. Seems like a lot of locals. Staff was nice. The food was good but there was a lot of bread to filling ratio with the mushroom steak sub. My sandwich was HUGE! I got a whole and didn't realize that I would be eating it for three days!! I think a 1/2 is 12 inches. I ordered the tuna and my husband got the Bobcat, plus we each got pickles, chips and a cookie....we definitely over-ordered. The sandwiches were fresh. The pickles were crisp. Sorry for not taking picture of delicious sandwich before it was devoured. Love discovery local businesses during our road trip. Typed in sandwich and Pickle Barrel popped up. This place did not disappoint. We shared whole cheesesteak. The sauce is marriage of marinara and Italian beef gravy. We got it lightly sauced. Order at counter and not too long get presented with deliciousness. They have a separate building to sit and eat but we needed to get back on road. Great sandwich! Love the bread! The small is plenty to fill anyone, I actually only ate half and ate the rest the next day for lunch. A large probably is good for 2 people to split. We went after the lunch rush so it wasn't too busy, but they only have 3 tables to sit at. Great service, friendly and fast! Been eating Pickle Barrel since I was a kid and it was always a 2 meal or more sandwich because it was fully loaded......... those were the good old days. Got my order today of half a cheesesteak (the best of the hot sandwiches) and there in the wrapper sat a sad loaf of bread barely filled with meat. I literally had a moment of woah this Jimmy Johns sandwich is small.... but wait it was not Jimmy Johns, and it was not full of meat. Perhaps had I not know the glory of eating a cheesesteak that would not have the bread wrap around the excessive delicous filling I would not be disappointed. But here I sit. Eating this sandwich with merely one hand, as it does not take the cradling two hands to keep the precious saucy contents from bursting forth. No I eat it with one hand on the sandwich and one with a tissue pressed to my eye to stop the tears from adding salt to this travesty. As I taste the familiar delicious flavors, I find myself trying harder to enjoy each miniscule morsel, knowing there is only enough meaty filling in it to satisfy a cheating vegan. Going to the pickle barrel is like gambling. You might get a delicious sandwich that makes you full for a little over $10. You might get a total breadwich and still be hungry after $21. We're from out of town and was recommended to stop here for some sandwiches! They were open a little later and we were hungry after a long day of fishing & it definitely hit the spot! We ordered the cheese steak and the California something. They were both good. The pickels were great and you get them as you order so that was great to tide us over. The cheese steak was really gooey and great it just lacked a little in the flavor area. Seems like the sauce was a little light. The California was was good according to my daughter but a little boaring. Not really any popping flavor. They had a great selection so we might try like the Italian or something else next time.
