This is a highly recommended restaurant and very popular. It really straddles between 3 and 4 stars. The good, the brocolini was excellent. Seasoned and cooked to perfection. The appetizers also arrived quickly after order. The garlic scrapes were also good. The pizza was good. We had the diavola and mostarda. Both were good thin crust pizzas with decent flavor. The best part was there was not a lot of residual oil on the pizza. The service after the appetizer was really rough. The server was friendly but it took over an hour to get our food order. They are always busy but the wait was a bit excessive. It gets really crowded which is good for the restaurant, make sure to make reservations if you want to try it out. read more

I came here by a recommendation from two different people that also visited Bozeman. We got the pappardelle and caesar salad with tiramisu for dessert. All parts of the meal were SO good. It was probably one of the best Caesar salad salads I've ever had. The pasta was light and delicious. Great food and service from start to finish ! We were promptly seated for our reservation, and greeted by Mary our outstanding server. The restaurant was buzzing ~ a very uplifting environment. After reviewing the menu and discussing with Mary we decided to share a pasta dish, followed by a pizza. We had the Bucatini with walnut pesto and finally shaved parm, it was outstanding! Perfectly cooked, well dressed, as fresh as can be. Next we had the Salsiccia pizza, which features Fennel Sausage and sweet caramelized onion. The dough was super thin and crisp, the toppings plentiful. It had a little kick that was offset by the sweetness of the onions. This place, Blackbird Kitchen, is generally not a walk-in so yesterday we made reservations for bar top seating so we could talk to the chefs. Darker interior, crowded, nicely dressed clientele, this place is "jacked with a cool vibe". Our perch near the food prep station allowed us to watch them making the magic and discussing our choices for dinner. We started with marinated warm mixed beet salad with dill, sherry vinegarette, mint, chili, citrus, pistachios and smoked cherve. This was a show stopper with the dill waking up your mouth and the beet and cheese being perfect. The mafaldine braised lamb sugo and grana padano was good, but just not memorable. The salsiccio fennel sausage, garlic, red onions, sweet onion and chili pizza was another story. The dough was slightly chewy, good airyliness, sweetness and a firmness to hold the ingredients without wilting. A perfect white pie! If you can get reservations or by chance snag a bar seat, get over to Blackbird Kitchen for a nice evening, pleasant staff and delicious dishes, you won't regret it. Flavor everywhere Options abound Serving team cares I got here ten minutes before close and was welcomed like the first patron in that afternoon. I got a wonderful table near the right side bar, and then was welcomed again by a fantastic server who knew his stuff inside and out. I elected to go with a glass of wine that suited my needs, along with the white beans and a pasta dish. They were delicious, and I augmented those with a cappuccino. All the while, pleasing tunes were playing, the clientele was enjoying themselves, and I felt like I was ready for a bit more. As entirely delicious as everything was, I did have a bit of room left. Thus, I went with a dessert wine and the affogato, and let me tell you, I have zero regrets. I know it's only one visit, but I'm thrilled with the spot, and recommend it highly. Walked in without a reservation and we were seated at the bar. We got the pizza we ordered after waiting for over 40 minutes. Unfortunately the diavola pizza was not worth the wait. The crust was thin and soggy, and only the edges were cooked well. The pizza was blah, the flavors were nothing to rave about. Maybe a different pizza would've been better. Blackbird is the hipster pizza and Italian joint of Bozeman--not dissimilar to what you would find in other new-tech-money cities: woodfire oven, the brown paper menu, the carafes. It's a profitable vibe, and it works. We had a lovely time here. The place was buzzing, and we got sat at a cozy table by the pizza space, which was fine by us. The two of us shared a bottle of rose, which was half off for happy hour, so that was a sweet deal. We ordered all of the small veggie plates because they all looked amazing. We loved the cauliflower with its crispy bits and chili and nicely acidic with the capers. So good. The parsnips were a bit too much with the pecans, etc. but we still liked them. The delicata squash were a miss because the brown butter sauce was drowning the whole plate and they added sugar and it was way too sweet and the squash weren't cooked through. So, no. For mains, we all shared the margherita pizza and the mafaldine lamb sugo. Both of those dishes were impressive. You could taste how fresh the tomatoes were on the pizza, and the pasta had a ton of lamb. The dish was a meat flavor bomb. Dessert was a basic but delicious tiramisu and some chocolate chip gelato. While the host was very on top of his A-game, our server was not. She messed up our daughter's drink order, never once bothered to refill our wine glasses when they were going low, and was generally absent most of the evening. She was nice, but not of the caliber that this kind of establishment should be employing. We waffled between giving this place three or four stars, and we ultimately decided to round up from 3.5 because we did have a lovely time as a family on our last night in Bozeman. We arrived right when they opened at 4:30, and the line was already out the door, so our expectations were high. Since we didn't have a reservation, we were seated at the bar. The atmosphere was great, but unfortunately, that was the highlight of the experience. The staff came across as unfriendly, and the food was overpriced for the small portion sizes. This place is popular, but I'm grateful they were able to accommodate my husband and myself as walk-ins on a Monday night in the summer. I'd recommend making a reservation if you have a bigger party. They only serve beer/wine and didn't sell liquor- which I'm learning is common in Montana. Stracciatella was incredible, tomatoes were sweet and perfectly ripe. Chimmichurri skewers were a little tougher than I was expecting but had great flavor. Everything about this restaurant was fabulous. Best Cesar salad I have ever had. When we first got there, we were early and sat at the bar. There were two bartenders -lovely people. I wish I could remember their name. The meal was wonderful. What really stood out was our waitress, Abra. Honestly, the sweetest girl ever. Very friendly and took so much time to go over the menu. I've been to Blackbird several times and noticed the last two times the wait staff has been unfriendly, bordering on rude! Last night, Kam and the waitress who brought our wine were just arrogant and rude to our table without reason. Our salads were not delivered at the same time with almost a ten minute wait to get the Caprese salad with no apology or mention that this might not be acceptable. Everyone at our table of 6 was friendly and made a point to say thank you every time food was delivered, water poured, etc. All of that to say, the food was delicious as always, but I was very disappointed in the staff, and may or may not go back. The food at Blackbird Kitchen was excellent. Both pastas were packed with flavor, and overall the quality of the ingredients and execution were impressive. The only knock on the food was the pizza, which was a bit too saucy and floppy for my taste. The pastas were homemade. Also pretty cool to see a bunch of young men running the whole kitchen. Couldn't be someone more than 25 on the line. Very rad. Unfortunately, the service really dragged down the experience. As a table of two, we ordered just two pastas and a pizza, yet dinner stretched beyond two hours. Our server rarely checked in, and we had to flag someone down multiple times just to get water refills. It felt like our table was largely forgotten for most of the evening. I'd happily come back for the food because it was genuinely very good, but the service needs significant improvement. First time visiting the blackbird. We had read nice reviews about the food. Would agree that the food selection is nice. Assortment of salads, pastas, and fun appetizers that have variety. The oven made pizza that we had was really quite good and so was the handmade pasta dish. The massive letdown was the quality of our service. It was quite striking and apparent being in a place that we thought the service would equal the food. Not sure we would ever go back because of the service. We sat at our table for over two hours waiting for a simple water refill. What was more disappointing was the reality of the vacancy of the restaurant. I had only been to Blackbird once as I had a horribly burnt pizza and said I would never go again. My husband wanted to take our kids there for his Birthday. The pizza was burnt again and the center was soggy so if you picked it up all the toppings fell off. The two pasta dishes were literally child size portions we literally all looked at each other when we saw how small it was and thought it was a joke! Then to top it off after a $200 meal they couldn't even comp my husband a $10 birthday dessert ! Beyond disappointing and the biggest waste of $200 ever! As a Bozeman native and previous owner of 2 restaurants in this Valley I know how important food quality and portion size is to people. They want a good value for their hard earned money. Our family came in on July 4th, luckily despite the city block party right at the corner. The Host was able to accommodate us at the last minute for a big group and kids. All the dish are very well balanced and thoughtful. The Pizza dough are rival the best Pizza Los Angeles and Phoenix AZ has to offer, plus the super friendly pizzaiolo. Blackbird level of execution of farm to table is on par with Michelin star level for the front and back house. Hopefully you will get a red and a green star soon. read more
