Okay, I'm ready to cast my vote in Brooklyn's "Roast Beef War." Roll-N-Roaster vs Brennan & Carr's. Both restaurants have been in business for well over half a century with well-deserved accolades. Despite having grown up in Brooklyn, I hadn't been to either before this year. I read reviews and actually asked ChatGPT what to order at R-N-R. We went with its suggestion: medium roast beef with cheese, onion rings, root beer and lemonade. My sandwich was more well-done than requested. They don't offer 'rare'. The few bites with red meat were infinitely better than the rest of the sandwich. The roll, as everyone points out, is baked in house. Though light and puffy, it didn't outweigh overdone beef. Onion rings were great, root beer average, and lemonade -- per my husband who loves lemonade -- excellent. While I wouldn't balk about returning, my vote goes to Brennan and Carr, though truly, when cooked as requested there is no substantial difference. I swung by recently for my usuals and glad to report that everything still tasted the same, just slightly more pricey year after year as expected. My regular order has always been the Roast Beef w/ Cheese, which was maybe $4 when I first tasted it over 25 years ago. It is now $9.45 or $.50 less for no cheese. Regardless, the roast beef (medium) is still tender and juicy, piled on top of a soft and pillowy, freshly made bread that's been dunked in a bath of delicious beef gravy. The ooey gooey cheese makes it complete for me. Everything else is solid. Nothing fantastic or worth driving out of your way for. Don't come here looking for the best version of everything on the menu. What can I say about this staple? Amazing! I came in on a Thursday night around 7pm and the place was crowded. I ordered roast beef sandwich with cheese, roast turkey with cheese, fries with cheese, and mozzarella sticks. Needless to say I was hungry! They took my order and I literally counted about eight people in the kitchen making food plus five people packing and serving food. I didn't wait long for my order and took it home. I sat down and enjoy a feast. Let's start with the mozzarella sticks. They were perfectly fried and didn't have a frozen taste. The red sauce does need a little work, but hey this is a place for roast beef. On to the roast turkey sandwich with cheese. The roll was fresh, the turkey was NOT dry, with the right amount of cheese. They are not cheap with the turkey. Now the fries cut perfectly into circles and the cheese they use is amazing. It's the same cheese you would find in a Philly Cheesesteak. The roast beef sandwich was wow. The roast beef was the perfect color of red, never dry or over cooked with a great amount of cheese. Roll-N-Roaster is a Brooklyn treasure. This is one of the most unique and special restaurants I have ever been to. I finally made the pilgrimage today and it was beyond worth the trip. The signature sandwich is everything I hoped it would be. Make sure to get the beef juice cup for dipping. Everything I tasted here was exceptional from the roll, to the beef, the fries, the espresso, and the orangeade. On top of all that, there is somehow also a free pizza? Nothing is better than free pizza, especially a delicious thin crust bar pie like this one. The decor in this place is a throwback to like a 70s or 80s family restaurant. I would say it's a nostalgia trip but nothing about Roll-N-Roaster seems entirely typical for that time or any other. When I went today, it was packed, but they moved quickly and efficiently. We don't spend a ton of time in Sheepshead Bay because it's a little out of our way, but we love a post-beach adventure at this Brooklyn landmark. It's huge, it's affordable, it's the most casual (good for when you're in a damp, sandy bathing suit), and it rocks a menu that hasn't changed in the past decade, and maybe not in the past half century. I don't know anywhere else that you can get a glass of wine for $4.95 these days, or a beer for $4.45. Order whatever sounds good to you, but know that: 1. You should get cheezburgers. At least once, and definitely dipped, or with the gravy on the side. The gravy makes it. 3. The rolls are all baked from scratch. Appreciate some fresh bread, in a world where almost all affordable burgers come on a potato roll. Yeah, sometimes it may not be quite as fresh as others, but I still love it. 4. Yes, you can get cheez on anything you pleez. And you should. 5. You should add on something you've never gotten every time. Wings, clam strips, a fried shrimp cup...It's all going to be way more affordable than you think, and likely the best or the worst. Someday I'm getting the bottle of Moet for $59.95. To celebrate just being at Roll-N-Roaster. 6. You shouldn't sleep on the pizza. Yeah, it's not GREAT, but it's pretty solid, and it's somehow $4.95! It's thin crust and it's perfect for kids. Growing up in Queen taking the trip to Roll-N-Roaster was a birthday tradition. You spin the wheel, get your Roll-N-Roaster coins and have an excuse to come back again (as if the food wasn't enough of an excuse). Now that I've moved away it's become a requirement to stop in. Their milkshakes are to DIE for. They're packed with ice cream but blended into a smooth and silky drink. You won't find fries like this anywhere else in Brooklyn. They're round crinkle cut fries that are the perfect ratio of crispy and salty. Make sure to get them with cheese!!! Their mozzarella sticks are gooey and have a cheese pull that stretches for miles. Every other side on the menu is fantastic so you really can't go wrong. Plus they give you a pretty large portion. The star of the show is the Roast Beef Sandwich. Driving through Brooklyn and stopped for the first time in prob. 10 years, and it was the same quality, portion and taste as I remembered. Roll N Roaster definitely feels frozen in time from its inception in the 70's, and people like it that way. I wonder if I had gone as a kid in the 90s it would have felt less retro but as a thirty something going in the 2020's I can appreciate the novelty of it since there are very few places like it in nyc. The speckled stained glass effect of the backlit menus behind the counter, the old tiles, and mustard colored booths feel straight out of a movie set. I don't eat red meat, so their signature item, the roast beef sandwich, was off limits to me. These are items I probably consume about once a year, and as a once a year treat, this place was decidedly fine. Not terrible and not amazing. I did not finish my food. Would I return? Absolutely not. But I don't think this place is for me. The restaurant was very clean-they even had a sink outside the bathrooms with staff continously visiting tables and cleaning them. They have a parking lot. The A/C was set to a good temperature. This is actually really cool. I like the sign that looks old school and even the decor looks like it hasn't been refreshed a lot. There's definitely ample seating but I know it gets really busy. People are pretty much in and out though. We stayed about an hour and no one bothered us to leave. Now to be fair, my friend had the roast beef and he said it was really good in fact he's the one who recommended this place. He got roast beef with a side of gravy. He pretty much finished two sandwiches. There was like three bites he couldn't finish. My other partner didn't talk a lot while eating which means he was really enjoying it. Another great feature this place has over a lot of other fast food restaurants is the fact that they cook to order. With that I order took a little bit longer than you would at a McDonald's or a chain of that nature. However it was well worth the wait because you know they were cooking it fresh and right on point. My friend told me I couldn't come here without getting orange aid. It was really good. It was a mix of fresh orange and fresh lemon. Like a orange lemonade. But it was really tasty. I appreciate the fact that you can taste real ingredients in that orange aid unlike when you go to fast food restaurants for everything tastes artificial. And last which probably should have been first is the price. I don't know how they keep the prices so low, but they are really fair for modern times and especially this economy. Food was mediocre. Clam strips were fantastic, the only thing they (and everything else) are mising is salt. There is not a single speck of seasoning on any single thing. Clam strips are fried wonderfully, with salt they'd be 5/5, but without they're a 3.5. Fries aren't cooked long enough so instead of crispy and delicious they're a soggy, unsalted mess. The cheese sauce tastes gross, almost like it's off. The gravy on the roast beef is decent, but also missing any seasoning. The roast beef is tasteless, and they definitely gave me more well done, as there's barely any pink whatsoever. Seriously, you might be busy but that shouldn't stop you from salting/seasoning your food, and cooking the fries properly. I can wait an extra minute guys, it's okay. read more

Finally after decades of having the jingle stuck in my head I made it to the famous Roll-N-Roasters. This place feels like a time capsule. Walking into the restaurant it may as well have still been the 70s. Which is a great part of their charm. I loved the interior and vibe of this place. However it's the food that matters. As you can tell from my score I wasn't too impressed. I got the lemonade, roast beef sandwich with cheese, and cheese fries. I'm not someone that would normally eat roast beef sandwiches. Their menu looked great but I wanted their signature items. I will say the best thing was the cheese fries. I was genuinely surprised at how much I enjoyed them. They were thin and crispy. The cheese of course elevated it. The lemonade was good. Refreshing and sweet. The roast beef sandwich with cheese was just ok. All in all I paid $20 for my meal. So I will say it is pricey. If I could've gotten everything for at least $16 I'd be happier. I'm more than willing to come back here. I want to try their burgers. They also had other great options on the menu that I'd consider. However I'm probably one and done on the roast beef sandwich. read more

Was fishing near by off shore parkway so dropped in. The look of the place reminds of what places around Coney Island looked like30 plus years ago, and very well kept. The staff is super efficient, taking orders, cleaning tables, and keeping up the bathrooms. The food was good. I tried the Roast beef sandwich, fries with Cheez, reminded me of old cheez Weez but better and fresher. We also tried corn nuggets, and chocolate milk shake. We got a free box of thin crust pizza for spending more than $45! Which was really nice. The prices were great, at par with Mc Donald's, which makes this place a great group spot for families. They must own the place and land, can't stress enough how shocked I was at the prices for the quality. Highly recommend a visit read more

This place is a must visit if you are ever in Brooklyn it's been around for years. I always order the roast beef N cheez it's great the roll is always fresh and so is the meat and the melted cheese it's a messy sandwich but worth it. The service is order at the counter and they call your number no fills service. The whole place is like going into a time machine to old school Brooklyn before high rent's and luxury buildings with corporate stores on every corner. It's beautiful read more
