I had dined at this location and the one in Austin Stonelake. Although I prefer the Austin Stonelake location more, the food was consistently delicious in both of these restaurants. My favorite appetizer to get here is always the Lamb Chop fondue. I usually do not like the taste of lamb chops, because it tastes too gamey for my preference; however, this restaurant is the only place where I will eat lamb chop. Their fondue is divine and I have never been disappointed by it. Another one of my favorites here is their rainbow trout and double-cut pork chop. I would recommend the rainbow trout for if you are feeling something not too heavy but tasty at the same time. As for the double-cut pork chop, I would only order it if you can handle a heavy entree. Before a show at the Paramount we decided to have some drinks and food. At first I thought it was going to be too loud, but they sat us in a corner that was perfect. The bad ass burger was BAD ASS. The poblano pepper made it truly unique and not like any burger I've ever had. Got it done medium and it might have been the best decision I never made. I need to take the advice others more often. I was brought up always getting my meat well done because my dad won't eat/cook anything thats any bit pink. Too much talking with the mouthh full made me give up on my manners and the hopes of ever finishing the burger. Fries were good, average. My dinner companion got the pork tenderloin. The presentation was impressive. I tried it, and didn't love it. Really rubbery but I don't know much about pork much less meat. The drinks were STRONG. First drink I got I requested absolute vodka, but they ran out somehow so for my 2nd drink they brought me Kettle One. That works. The service was excellent. At first I felt they bothering too much, and once again the waitress wants to take away my food before I'm done. Have a little faith! I may be a small person but I swear I can EAT a lot. My boyfriend and I went to Roaring Fork the first night we were in town. It was almost 9 but most of the restaurants around were still open. We stopped into this place and it looked pretty good so we stayed! We both ordered the "Roaring Fork Big Ass Burger" which is a pretty safe bet most places. Both of our burgers were basically raw when they were ordered at Medium Well and Medium. They took back my burger (my boyfriend didn't mention his so he kept it). They did end up bringing out a new burger that was cooked correctly but it didn't seem like a big deal and there were no apologies whatsoever for the mistake. Everything we ordered was still on the bill and again, no mention of the raw burger and the wait time for the new one. Pretty disappointed for the first night in town. read more

The staff is pleasant and friendly, and they know how to let you know they're available while being conscientiously unobtrusive to guests' conversations. The food is pretty good-- a little bit pricier than I'd necessarily assign for the quality of the food, but, pretty good value for the prime location. The interior is a bit dark?, but the decor is nice and understated while still feeling comfortable and welcoming. While the menu isn't particularly inventive, the food is pretty good, and *consistently* so. Definitely recommend this spot any time you're seeing a show at the Paramount! read more

American Western Bistro. So I went here Friday for an anniversary celebration. It was amazingly crowded. We went upstairs to wait for the table and had a cocktail in the upstairs hotel lobby. Great atmosphere and great balcony. We had reservations but the table wasn't ready for about 20 minutes which was fine. The service I must say was not as great as I expected. The waiter would take our order and then disappear. For quite a while. It wasn't that he was rude, I believe they were understaffed. Our waiter in addition to our table had a private room that seated around 25 people. BTW, this room looked pretty awesome for private parties, very secluded and in the back with windows. All this said. The food was amazing. Because this is classified as a 'Western' bistro there is lots of green chile. The green chile mac and cheese is to die for. I don't really enjoy mac and cheese, but this is basically mac noodles w/this alfredo/green chile rich decadent cheese dish. It comes in a cauldron and we split amongst 3 people. I had the crab cakes. These have corn and chile in the crab mixture. Quite a different texture than I am used to, but very good. Also the chopped salad w/green chile ranch dressing w/blue cheese and red and yellow tomatoes. Everyone, everyone loves the green chile pork stew. It too is served in a cauldron w/ 4 large flour buttered tortillas that are so light and yummy. Also this place is really great to sit in the bar area. You have to get there early or circle tables/chairs for people to leave. They have a bar menu, everything $5, which includes the above green chile stew and I believe the BIG ASS Burger may be on the menu as well. I've heard it's excellent. Last time I had the tortilla soup. It was good, but I've had better and wouldn't recommend trying it when they have so many green chile dishes to try. As far as price, it's in the moderate range. Most appetizers are $8. Most salads $8, and most entrees $13-25 range. Sides are served separately ranging $6 each but are giant portions that you can share w/guests. Roaring Fork!!! Sounds delecious doesn't it? Well in fact it was. The food was scrumptious. The tuna tar-tare mini tacos were bursting with flavor, the Sea trout was mild with a good seasonings and the green chili mac and cheese might have been the best macaroni this side of the border. So why do I give 2 stars you say? Let me give you a recap of the night.... Last Saturday was my wife's 29th birthday. I wanted it to take her to a nice place down town that we have never tried before and invite all of our friends. I reserved a table for 26 people (mostly friends) a week in advance. An employee from the Roaring Fork assured me that they could accommodate our party. The night rolls around and we show up at Roaring Fork around 9:15 (15 minutes past our reservations). We go inside and are greeted by a waiter who seemed content and had a good knowledge of the menu and off menu items. I made it very clear to our waiter that it was my wife's birthday just in case they do something extra for my wife (bring out some dessert etc). Once our full party arrived we decided to split into 2 tables with me going to the spare table and taking some of my guy friends with me ( most of their gfs and wives stayed behind with my wife and her other friends. This is probably where the night went downhill. After this our waiter became flustered and annoyed and started to be unpleasant. I couldn't help but to think why the manager walking around in his suit did not decide to give more staff to the table besides having a bus boy just fill water for us. In reality to have good service we would have at least needed 1 waiter per table. Anytime anyone got up and moved seats the waiter would start to tell me or the person that moved "this is really going to make things long in the end, can we not do that". At some point it was like ok man, I am not sure what to tell you. Its a huge party and people are moving around a bit as they are mingling and their are 2 tables here. As people would order drinks he would barely make eye contact and seem annoyed as he would have to take another on the fly order. (of course we are going to drink, what did he think we would just drink water and not order any adult beverages). At times he would dissapear for a few minutes while people were needing to order more drinks. After having to remind him again that it was my wifes birthday. he brought back a birthday slice of cheesecake with "Happy Birthday" on it. The slice of cheesecake was absolutely great might have been the highlight of the night. The night is getting late and we already been there for over 2 hours. I decide to get out of my seat and pace a bit looking for the waiter. The manger finally speaks to me (hasnt said a word to anyone all night) and asks if I need anything. Yes I tell him, we need our checks. And would you believe it, he gave me an attitude "yeah there are a lot of checks to go over", and points at the waiter trying to get the orders right. I said ok and let it go at that. Finally the checks come. About half of the checks have items added on their ticket that shouldn't be on there, including mine. They had added an additional drink that nor I or my wife had drank and also....GET THIS, $8.00 FOR THE SLICE OF BIRTHDAY CAKE!!!!! I could not freaking believe it. After we brought a huge party to their establishment: they understaffed our tables with 1 waiter, the waiter and manager were both snarky with me and my party all night and they royally messed up our checks they had the freaking audacity to charge me for a piece birthday cake. One of my wifes friends spoke up about it and a woman waiter said they would take it off our check (she was only bright spot on their service staff and was very patient with the little interaction she had with our table) I am giving the Roaring Fork 2 stars only because the food was good and the dessert great. The service was absolutely laughable so much so that I will not recommend this restaurant to any of my friends and family and definitely will not be bringing my big group of friends and family back here for my birthday in September. The management needs to shape up and make sure they are staffed enough to accommodate a big party like ours. If not they risk us going next store to Perrys Steak House (unbelievable service and food for my graduation dinner which I will write about in another review) I will not be returning to Roaring Fork for the huge lack of their ability to pull through when it means the most and deliver a special night for my wife and friends. read more

I had my doubts, but RF is wonderful! I've taken several out-of-town guests to RF, and everyone has enjoyed it! The service is good, the food is great, and it's right on Congress...be ready for an all around great night! Happy hour is a lot of fun. It gets a little crowded toward the end, but the appetizer menu and drinks are well worth it. The signature shaken margaritas are a special treat at any hour!! Fresh and limey...with a kick! The fish, meat, and fun side dishes are worth the money. When you are willing to go out and spend a little...grab a bottle of wine and relax. You'll have a fantastic time at the RF!! My faves: The shrimp appetizer (with mango slaw), the snapper with crab, mashed taters, asparagus, and the molten lava dessert. Not all at once...you'll roll out. Save it for special occassions, and you'll have a great time. The food is flawless -- good portions, unique, tasty, and stylish in presentation. (I recommend the beef tenderloin.) The overall tone of the place is classy without being snobby, and thoroughly Tex-hip. I love the antler chandelier and the faux leather. The restaurant - The Roaring Fork is obviously a very nice restaurant that serves some excellent food. I haven't actually eaten on the restaurant side of Roaring Fork (I've seen some of their entrees and they look wonderful) so I can't really comment on the restaurant beyond saying that I suspect that you really can't beat the roaring fork for a high end steak in austin; kinda pricey but there are other steak places in town that are pricier & probably not better. Edit regarding happy hour at the Roaring Fork - Previously you got 50% off the bar menu during Happy Hour which was a great deal. Now they have created a new happy hour menu at the Roaring Fork and it looks like the prices are 25% off the regular bar menu so now the big ass burger that normally costs $10.50 goes for $7.95 which is just an okay deal (it used to be $5.25). I could be wrong but I think that the big ass burger is also marginally smaller than before (it is still a big burger). If I am wrong about what seems like an across the board increase in happy hour prices then let me know & I'll update my review. Previously I recommended that if you are hungry and don't want to drink then I highly recommended this happy hour but now with the new happy hour menu I am going to not recommend the Roaring Fork as an inexpensive happy hour. If money is no object then the Roaring Fork is a great place for happy hour. ps - I totally revamped my review so I deleted the old one & resubmitted it. I wanted everyone to know that all the prices are more expensive than previous happy hour prices. I've had difficulties figuring out how many stars to give the Roaring Fork given that it isn't a happy hour that works well for me but on the other hand it is a top notch restaurant so I have decided to give it 4 stars. If it had a cheap happy hour or I had enough money to enjoy an expensive, quality steak then I would have given it 5 stars. Food was really good. For our appetizer we had queso with chorizo (we substituted it for the pork) extremely good. The guacamole was ok (I had better!) chips were a bit stall. Order fish tacos, the came with black beans (beans were a bit cold). I also order some extra sides (I like to try many things lol) green Mac and cheese was really good (must order) and I also had the street corn (also good). Fish tacos are prolly my favorite. The big ass burger is solid. Not the best burger in town, but definitely worth the happy hour price. Guacamole is strong to, as is the Green Chile Pork Stew, which if you get it, it's not really a stew, but more like a bowl filled with pulled pork that tastes good in the tortillas they bring out. Congratulations, Roaring Fork, you get a Four. Let me start with the missing star though. I don't always order fish from this place, but when I do it's not nearly enough. I have used cut bait in freshwater larger than these portions. Now that we have that out of the way, you can't go wrong with the Green Chili Pork. This stuff is simply phenomenal. If you like Carne Guisada, this respectable and formidable counterpart comes in a small, heated kettle looking thing, topped with Jack or Provolone with a serrano pepper thrown in, and four decent tasting little tortillas. Their burgers are in a class of their own (if you like Wholly Cow, this place is NOT for you). These burgers are ginormous, the bacon is plentiful, and they are not conservative with the fixings. A friend ordered some gigantic cut of pork that was prepared very well and was too much for both of us to eat. Both the chicken and pork enchiladas were better than expected, and the crab cake is sizeable and flavorful. The service is friendly and professional, the beer selection perfectly adequate, the atmosphere very comfortable, the prices are reasonable for the whole experience, and its really easy to steal the entire box of tasty chocolate mints at the front door. read more

eh i thought this menu was a bit disappointing, as everyone else raves about it. menu was very small with almost everything having meat in it, i didn't think any of the dishes were very creative, as in lots of basic items like sliders, guacamole, and salads (which was very over dressed and soggy)they did let me substituent chicken for salmon which was very nice. the service was great, as we were catching up with old friends and were not rushed or annoyed that we weren't ordering tons of food. I made reservations for my birthday dinner here for 7pm on a Friday evening. Our party of six arrived at 6:50pm and were told to wait 10 minutes since we arrived early. That was understandable. However, it was not until 7:20 that we were seated. During that time we saw two different groups who came in after our party be seated before us. We had to check in with the hostesses multiple times as well since they did not bother to acknowledge us during the 20 minutes we were waiting. That being said, the food was great as everyone else reviewed on here and the service from the server was as expected but the wait time and the lack of acknowledgement from the hostesses took away from the rest of the evening. read more

Princess Bride dared the Caliente Gods and partook in the Kettle Of Green Chili Pork; she was toasty & pleased. Cram Chowder got his Remoulade on w/Crab Cake; he liked his surf. I went to my wheelhouse and ordered Back-On in the form of the Iceberg BLT; light (leaf) yet savoury (swine). Skinny Fries x 2 were the bonus prize behind curtain #2. The House Ritas were in abundance and were consumed in a generous manner. The Bearded (Austinites & their soup catchers) Dude Bartender was aloof and inattentive, but the Cherokee (love Austin diversity!) Female Barkeep was friendly, and on the ball. Great room and its ambiance was enhanced by the influx of upscale hotel guests and the fresh faced, nervous, and bespoked graduands attending prom activities on site. We would've stayed to imbibe and peck more, and observe the goings-on, but we had to make our way to the Erwin Center to haggle and joust w/the Viper/Vulture Scalpers for the eve's Regina Spektor/Tom Petty concert. A group of ten went here for dinner on a Wednesday night. We ordered everything from steaks to roasted chicken and fish. Everything was mighty tasty and of good value. I had the simply grilled fish of the day: Walu, from Hawaii. It was a delicious white fish with the silkiness of tuna with the color and taste similar to halibut. It was indeed "simply grilled" with the perfect amount of seasoning. It was topped with an avocado salad. The dish comes with a corn butter (I omitted) and lime cilantro rice but I opted for a steamed vegetable instead. They were happy to accomodate. Note: after dinner, I found out that the Walu is actually banned for consumption in some countries due to it's laxative effect. I'm happy to report that I had no issues...but there's a little warning notice for ya! It was a lovely meal and great for a business dinner. read more
