This place is awesome. My wife and I went for Valentines Day and had a great experience. Our waiter, Lauren, was of the best servers I've ever had. Very attentive w/o hovering. The mussels with chorizo was cooked perfectly and wasn't spicy. My wife's bacon wrapped pork tenderloin was great and was also enough for my lunch the next day. My order, the short-ribs, stole the show. So tender. My wife kept stealing bites, and she's not a big meat eater. Went there for Valentine's Day with my husband. We got off to a rocky start because it took the server forever to come take a drink order. But after that, the service was very good. We started off with the crab cake. It was the perfect size to share and super yummy. I had the bacon wrapped pork tenderloin and my husband had the roasted half chicken. Both were moist, tender and flavorful. I really enjoyed the side of roasted sweet corn, but the highlight of our meal was the Green Chile Mac and Cheese. Love , love , love it! The price wasn't too steep. Neither of us had dessert, but we did both have drinks. We actually expected to spend more than we did. We made reservations for lunch here on the Thursday before ACL & were promptly seated and attended to. Love the warm, "sophisticated rustic-ish" atmosphere in the restaurant- it wasn't at all what I expected! I ordered the rotisserie chicken enchiladas and they were delicious, but a generous portion- two people could probably share them. I hear the green chili macaroni and cheese and the tartare of pacific ahi tuna are both delicious! Oh and the tortilla soup is supposed to be yummy too. Wow!!! Wish so badly we had this in houston. We had a large party and had the awesome round table in the back private room which we loved. We were worried at first that they may "forget" about us being in a room like that, but we got great service the whole visit! Our server Amanda was very friendly and accommodating. We were a group of 15 outspoken girls for a bachelorette party; many servers would have a preconceived notion about guests like that, and portray it in their attitude, especially at such a nice restaurant, but she was very helpful and polite. She explained the drinks and menus perfectly, that was pretty impressive reciting all the specials and describing certain things we asked about. Again, we were a tad rowdy, so many times we accidentally didn't hear all of what she said- so she would have to repeat to different people multiple times and she did not once display a bit of frustration, even when splitting our checks (I.e. Two girls shared an appetizer so trying to figure how to separate that). I can't even describe the food!! Everything was sooooo amazing! We had two girls with strict dietary needs (vegan and gluten/dairy intolerant) and again, very informative and accommodating. Disappointing would be putting it mildly. I came here for ARW with my friend and the whole experience was quite unsatisfactory. The only saving grace was their service, which was still unacceptably slow. Note: It was Sunday around 8. We were one of three tables in there. First impression: hey, it's really dark in here. Did I just walk into a cave? Good thing the host warned me about that step; I would've totally tripped over it. WTF I can't read my menu. They didn't even offer us a restaurant week menu; we had to ask for one. I think it's weird that all their tables are fourtops. Service: Our waitress, Amanda, was friendly. However, after handing us menus, she disappeared for a good minutes. ??? After she took our orders, it took about 5-10 minutes for our appetizers to come out. Then our entrees came out about 5 minutes after that. I felt like they could've timed it better. Thankfully they didn't bring us our dessert while we were starting on the entree. I felt like they learned their lesson, hah. The bill arrived faster than anything. I sort of felt like they just wanted us out of there so they could close and go home. Food: Before I go into detail about the food we got, ALL OF OUR FOOD WAS ONE TEMPERATURE: LUKEWARM. I think this is unacceptable. For our appetizers, I got the smoked salmon and my friend got the iceberg BLT. Both were insipid and probably something we could've made ourselves at home. When I read the description for the smoked salmon, I was expecting something like bagel & lox. Instead, I got five slices of toasted bread and a hunk of lukewarm salmon. Oh and there was some kind of spread on the side. Salmon was flavorless and limp. Friend's iceberg salad was unremarkable. For our entrees, I got the parmesan-crusted swordfish, and she got the pork tenderloin. Both were, again, lukewarm. However, they weren't as bland this time. The shrimp were sweet and tender, and the swordfish was just edible. My friend's pork tenderloin was pretty good though. Dessert: I got the creme brulee, and she got the pineapple cornmeal upside down cake. Creme brulee was yet again, lukewarm (is it supposed to be? I don't think so) and really rich. I liked the crust. It was kind of like crunching down on rock candy. My friend's upside down cake was ok, I think. She didn't really comment on it. Overall: I don't know if we went at a bad time or what. My friend said she had been there for lunch before and it was "amazing." Don't come here for restaurant week? My first choice was Fabi and Rosi, just FYI. In conclusion, I want my $25 back. I'm kind of embarrassed to admit this, but I've been to Roaring Fork four times now and have only tried one thing on their menu. What can I say? I'm a creature of comfort and this one item on the menu (which happens to be their "Half-Ass Burger") is, quite simply, amazing. The "Half-Ass" may sound a bit wimpy, but compared to most other burgers it is a behemoth. 3/4 to 1lb. in size. (Yes, this is the small burger.) This is a meal that two people can easily split or one person with a gigantic appetite can eat on their own. But it's not just size that makes this thing good. Anyone can make a big burger, but not everyone can make a big burger that you want to eat over and over again. There's a lot to like about this thing, but the the bacon and subtle kick from the roasted poblano pepper are my favorite. Bottom line: It's delicious. Perhaps even one of the best in Austin. Oh, and did I mention it's only around $10? And it comes with fries? This is an incredible burger at an incredible price. read more

Wife and I came here with the brother-in-law and sister-in-law for a birthday dinner. We made a reservation but it wasn't too necessary since the place was not too busy and we got seated in the bar area anyways, The bar area had some TVs but was very dark, like to the point it was very difficult to see the menus. Other than that the atmosphere was that of a more upscale restaurant. Our food was delicious!!! This was the saving grace of the review because the service was sub-par to say the least. A rib-eye ($42 w/o sides), fish tacos, tenderloin salad and short ribs were ordered along with a few drinks. All the food was spectacular. We were never were asked if we wanted another round of drinks, but shoot we had to go out of our way to get a soda refill after it had been empty for a while. We are guessing the server was new given his poor job the first 3/4 of the meal. He was looking around whenever we would ask questions, failed to mention the steak/specials until asked, and just couldn't anticipate anything that we may need or may ask. For example, when asked what beers were on tap, he replied with none and waited for us to ask what beers were in a bottle. Something you would expect a server to have the experience for when at a nice restaurant. He did catch onto the birthday hints and brought out a complimentary dessert, which was their strawberry pie, and it was one of the best desserts I have ever had. So the 4 is stars purely because of the food. Service almost made us give it a 2 or 3 but we can hope that this was a one time thing and he was having an off day. Would we come back? The food here deserves 5-stars!!! It is absolutely, fantastically delicious! I ordered the Texas Two-Step which costs $14 and included soup or salad and an entrée. I had the BLT salad with white onion vinaigrette dressing and the wood-grilled salmon with mashed potatoes topped with spinach! Can someone say FOODGASM!!!!!!!! Omg! I'm jealous of my own mouth. Lol Although the food is superb, I had to take away 1 star for the horrible service. The first time I was here & sat at the bar, service was great. Ahhhh Roaring Fork is phenomenal! The sliders and fries are awesome, so awesome that I couldn't bear cheating on them and order something else! While in Austin on business... I walked from my hotel to Frank - where I have had brunch and been impressed - for dinner. However, as Yogi Berra once said - "Nobody goes there anymore. It is too crowded." So, i checked Yelp on my iPhone and decided to walk over to Roaring Fork at the Hotel Intercontinental. The place has a "lounge" feel - small, dark and Jack Johnson music playing. It does fave a good feel and is very comfortable. I ordered a beer and the Big Ass Burger ($13.00). The burger looked fairly routine, but was actually very good - excellent beef, fresh produce and chipotle mayo. I was very impressed with the burger. The bacon was crispy and had a good taste. The aged longhorn chedder was very good. The fries were basic, not much better than frozen. A better option may have been the Green Chile Mac & Cheese. read more

But my entree was only just ok. I ordered the bacon wrapped pork tenderloin and yes it was good, it just wasn't great. If I'm going to spend over $50 per person I want my food to be excellent!! Prom Night 2011 Unbeknownst to me and my family, May 7th brought the arrival of burgeoning adults to downtown Austin and the Roaring Fork. Prim Princesses clip-clopped next to horse-drawn carriages with their dates around their arm, the young lads starring blankly into space, mouths agape. Each teen throng would pass by only for an almost identical one to follow. We walked faster in search of a more elderly crowd. After turning the corner of 7th and Congress we were immediately met by yet another line of dapper lads and dainty debutantes protruding out of the door of the restaurant. One peach-fuzzed gentleman made eye contact with me and tipped the brim of his Stetson in my direction. I bowed my head slightly to reciprocate the acknowledgment and curled the corner of my mouth in a wry smile as I was reminded of my whereabouts. Ahhh, Texas. The decor was on par with other upscale American eateries offering mood lighting and a couch-filled lounge area nestled in the back corner. The service was great, frequent and pleasant without being intrusive. For dinner I devoured a side salad with mixed greens, feta, and candied walnuts in addition to the Slow Roasted Pork Shoulder Carnitas, which melted in my mouth. At the end of the meal I mopped up the remnants in gluttonous statement of indulgence and peered over to the cacophonous party next to us. Sho' nuff', it was the same group of blithe teens. The junior cowboy was at one end of the table, sans Stetson, adjusting his dates corsage while blushing profusely. Perhaps it was my gluttonous behavior or the scene I just witnessed but my food began to back up slightly. Overall, 'The Fork' is a great place to go if you're looking to make a long meal the focal point of your night or if you just want to grab a few drinks before a more rowdy early-morning marathon. For me, the fork will be forever incorporated into my mental file of Texas: 'Cowboys' and Meat, that's what Texas does! read more

I visited the Roaring Fork for an early dinner with my hubs, parents and two kids aged 9 and 8. Fab meal - I will be back! Pros First and foremost, I'd like to thank the chef, waitstaff, support staff, the napkins and the menu printers for the Mexican street corn. I didn't order it but ate it off everyone's plates. Perfect combo of sweet, salty, tart and crunchy. Cornbread to start - very tasty Braised ribs with horseradish mash and tomato jam - tender and again a fabulous combo of flavor and texture. Very well balanced. Bacon wrapped tenderloin - tasted this off other's plates. Tender and flavorful. Corn was awesome. Half chicken - great proportion for the price. Not overcooked like I find chicken usually is. In walking distance to many other bars and restaurants. Romantic lighting makes this an ideal date spot Food came quickly and drinks were quickly refilled Cons Only con is our waiter wasn't as patient as he could have been with making recommendations for lagers for my Dad and seemed a bit irritated by the kiddos (who were very well behaved and making an extra effort to be polite). Had an Old Fashion from the bar and it is one of the best I have ever tasted. Very well balanced. Willamette Valley, Oregon Pinot was perfect with the wet aged strip. Green chili mac and cheese, mashed Yukon gold potatoes and asparagus all served family style. Nothing at the table was a miss. Pork tenderloin wrapped in bacon with cheese grits was great. We were in Austin to for a brief 24 hour relaxcation and decided to eat here by only looking a pictures and a couple of reviews... They knocked our lights out. The MAC and Cheese was by far the table fav. I had a standing roasted Pork Chop with "waiter suggested" fried egg and mac and cheese.. I almost died! it was done to perfection, no kidding perfect roast.. The wify had a 8.5 filet, 28 days 'wet aged" with mashed taters and all I can say is, it was a slice of heaven, when I die I'm sure this is what they will be serving up there... Brosef had a "big ass burger" and that s how you order it.. couldn't get him to shut up about it for the rest of the trip... I went to the RF for a friends birthday dinner, we ate in the bar area since it was so crowded, which was okay and totally expected on a Saturday night. We order drinks and they are brought to us quickly, the service was great, our waitress was friendly. I ordered the Kobe beef burger, medium rare, and it came with a little kettle of fries. The burger was slightly overdone but was very tasty, the peppery bacon was a great compliment with the mushrooms and Swiss. My husband's steak however was very fatty and overcooked, not really what you would expect out of a place like this. My conclusion, its A-ok, is the food we tried worth the money? Probably not. We will be back to try the happy hour, I hear that's where the action's at this place anyway! read more

I've had the pleasure of dining at the Roaring Fork twice and both lunches were absolutely superb. I highly recommend ordering the Fish of the Day with the Garlic-Cilantro Chimichurri sauce. Two words: Mouth Watering. Make sure to save room for dessert. Their most popular item is the warm lava brownie and ice cream - and I can see why. The cookie piece on top wasn't that great, but the brownie was fantastic. I also tried a piece of the peach pie which was made from scratch, also exsquisite. The decor is cozy - lots of wood paneling and browns and whites. There's a nice open window that looks out onto Congress Avenue so you can people watch from your booth if you choose. The Happy Hour is supposed to be great so I'm looking forward to checking that out sometime. I was looking for something a little fancy with above average food and I believe I came to the right place. The place has a very dim lit romantic feel to it and would be a perfect place to take a date. I believe someone even proposed at this place. We sat at the bar since there was an hour wait which means it's that's good. The bartender was so friendly and our drinks were never empty. We ordered the tortilla soup which was full of flavor and was topped with guacamole which made it that much Meir delicious. Then for my meal I had the beef tenderloin salad. The tenderloin was cooked to perfection and needed absolutely nothing at all. It was so good. I will most definitely be back to try and some other dishes. read more

Me and some tall blond went here on a mission - go to Happy Hour, try the burger. The blond & I were searching for burgers in Austin that would rival that of Sam's Burger Joint in San Antonio. Now, these two places aren't in the same category - the Roaring Fork is a restaurant, Sam's is short order. AND that makes the Roaring Fork an even bigger disappointment because it's not like the burger was bad for restaurant standards, it was just bad. The burger was burnt, and if you can get past that, the burger didn't really taste like much. I don't know if that's a Happy Hour tactic to get people to move to the regular menu...it certainly rained on my hour. I wasn't particularly fond of the fondue either. read more

Texas Monthly's #30 burger was enhanced by the presentation and atmosphere. Roaring Fork is a touch fancy especially for Austin but still nice and Texas-y. During lunch (the time to order the burger) the atmosphere is bearably swanky. The Half-Ass Burger, which is plenty big, is brought out open faced and skewered to keep it all together. On the side come a kettle of fries. Thats right, a kettle. Once you assemble the burger and spread the provided chipotle mayo, your mouth will be watering. The burger patty itself was beautifully peppery and flavorful. The aged longhorn cheddar was perfection and the applewood bacon was tops; perfectly crunchy and flavorful. We had a team dinner here for work and had a wonderful time. Everyone was flying in from different cities, and due to weather / flight delays, we had no idea how many would show for dinner. And indeed there turned out to be a few tardy guests, as well as no-shows. Despite the restaurant being full, the management didn't make a fuss and held our empty chairs, in the event people did show. I greatly appreciate their being so accommodating. Food was great - big, bold flavors on each dish, as you would expect from Texas. I appreciate there being some actual vegetables that came with the main course. Huckleberry isn't just for Finn anymore! Had 2 huckleberry margaritas and one regular . . . shared the queso and guacamole and finished the night with the kettle green chili pork. Really really liked the huckleberry margaritas . . . but all 3 had plenty of tequila. I can usually drink at least twice that, but 3 was PLENTY. The margaritas were $5 each due to happy hour . . .all drinks were $1 off and all appetizers (and salads) were $4 off. Liked the queso (meat flavor was nice) . . . even the salsa wasn't bad. I liked that I didn't taste like I was just eating pureed tomatoes. The guacamole was fine (I tend to go more classic with my own . . . the way we made it growing up). the kettle green chili pork was as good as advertised . . . and very very filling. They don't skimp on the pork, and I was able to eat the chili whole (which means it was spicy, but not too hot to eat). Not to mention that almost anything covered with cheese is 4 stars in my book. To start...I cannot believe I have not reviewed Roaring Fork before. This is one of my favorite downtown restaurants. They the best salad selection. For the entree, you definitely want to try the green chille pork enchiladas or the wood grilled salmon (favorite of all time!!!). To top it all, please order the huckleberry cheese cake. I usually do not like sweets but whenever I go to Roaring Fork, I cannot let this cheese cake get away. LOL! It was very light and yummy!!!! And last but not the least, the service is always phenomenal! They also have best lunch combos, they call it Two-Step! This place is definitely fancy-schmancy and you bet your bottom dollar you're going to walk out of here at least $80 poorer if you hit this spot up for date night, but it'll be worth it. If you're like me -not made of money- you'll save a visit here for special occasions. It's right beside the Paramount Theater so if you're watching a show the same evening, it's a good place for dinner. I'm a big fan of their fish dishes. They always taste fresh, seasoned just right, and lightly baked or grilled. You must try their Green Chili Mac n Cheese - absolutely delicious. Their vegetable side dishes and salads are also fresh and tasty. You gotta' love a place that can take simple dishes and make them taste so...great. I can't speak for the meat, but I've heard wonderful things about their steak and famous "Big Ass Burger". (Note, I think they only serve the burger during lunch.)My husband favors their steak. Service is four star, parking is a pain, food is expensive but outstanding. Still worth a visit...just not more than once a month, unless of course you're made of money. read more

Very nice dining experience. I'm only giving it 3 stars because it looked like a southwest influence restaurant but not really. The food was a bit on the heavy side but flavorful. The guacamole and queso con puerco was very good. I was not really impressed by the pork carnitas. However, the medjool salad was impressive. Very good service by John (thanks) with good wine recommendations. This might have been bad menu choices for me. I will say that the Big Burger looked delicious. Had been to the one in Scottsdale a couple of years ago, so I figured I would give this one another try. It was pretty packed for a Friday night, but I think that was due to the Austin Film Festival going on next door. The waiter commented that it's usually much more busier during lunch than it is dinner. I got what I had two years ago....the burger w/ fries and she got the two grilled fish tacos. We split the green chili mac & cheese, which was delicious. My burger was good, not great and she enjoyed her fish tacos. We got ambitious and ordered the pecan pie - which was absolutely fantastic. I think the green chili mac & cheese and the pecan pie were our two favorites. Service was great and the food and drinks are reasonably priced. I've been here a number of times before and was all set to give it a solid four stars after tonight's visit. But tonight turned out to be extra good, and I gotta face it: I've been taking the place for granted. The flavors tend to be gratuitously big, it's part of a small chain and they show no compunction about putting a burger and fries on the dinnertime menu. It's time to admit I've let those factors cloud my impression enough to underestimate the Fork. My usual mixed grill order carried its weight tonight. The rare filet mignon was right on, the duck confit better than on previous visits, and the shrimp, sausage and veggies not bringing any disappointment. The girlfriend was enamored with her crab cake and a few bites confirmed that judgment. A friend's tuna tartare kind of dish was totally working and a mac-and-cheese side order was show-stopping - a winning marriage of tradition (perfect au gratin topping) and innovation (spicy cheese sauce with green (spinach?) pasta elbows. Service was without a hitch, as it's been on my previous visits. Tonight was an extra challenge with four of us, but any indecisiveness was met with perfect equanimity by our server. I tried this place on a recent work trip to Austin. We had such a large group that we were seated in their private dining area. I wasn't sure what to expect when I was told that this is where we would be having dinner, but I can say I was amazed at how good this place was. The service was impeccable and the waiters assigned to our group were always on top of drink orders and anything we needed. We ended up having the slow roasted pork carnitas and green chili mac and cheese for our appetizers. They were amazing and left everyone wanting more. For my meal, I had the bacon wrapped pork tenderloin with a side of the green chili mac and cheese. Other people in my group ordered pretty much every entree item on the menu and there were no complaints. Came here during Austin Restaurant Week and loved the food, service, and atmosphere. The inside of the restaurant was fancy with dim lighting. My favorite food was the Green Chili Pork. The pork was very moist with lots of juices in every bite. The chili also gave it a unique twist. The planked Cedar Salmon was tender. The Swordfish topped with egg and hash was a surprise; I didn't expect the fish to be so flavorful. For dessert, I tried the Rum Cake, which I strongly recommend. I went here for lunch with the hubby. The ceasar salad was delicious. The salmon was super fresh and tasty. The macaroni and cheese was pretty good, nothing to die for, but yummy. I would definitely want to go back. Don't forget to try the chocolate mints at the host desk. read more
