We used to love going here. However food quality has gone downhill, it is never the same from one week to another. Sad to say the new owners are losing a lot of long time customers because of this. The portion sizes are smaller and the brand/quality of food appears to be the cheapest that can be found. The 'home fries are like none I have ever seen, they are more like semi mashed potatoes. Some of the booths are horrible to sit in and if you don't sit in the right spot you are sitting on a wooden plank. They have lost a lot of the waitresses who had been there for years. We've been on a Friday Fish Fry quest the past few months. Coming from a small blue collar town in the Eastern U.S. where Friday Fish Fries are a legend I didn't think I'd ever have that experience again but for some reason they seem to be a legend reborn in Phoenix's East Valley. The range has been from awesome, where single filets droop over both edges of the plate and they keep piling on more to less than stellar but I'm really pleased that not one of them has been what I would consider bad. Of them all, Red Mountain Café is unquestionably the clear cut winner when it comes to value. The size of each filet is unbelievable and they start you off with three of them, thickly battered in a crunchy bread coating and cooked just the way cod should be cooked. You also get your choice of potato and salad sides making for a very filling meal for under ten bucks. By the way, even though it was prime dinner time on a Friday night we were seated immediately and we were served fast and efficiently. This is one of those places you'll either love or you took the wrong turn to some high-falutin' show-off place in Scottsdale and ended up here by mistake in which case you will feel like a, um, fish out of water. Nothing about this place is fancy. It's in a strip mall in Mesa and when you walk in you can't help but notice the management's Upper Michigan roots. The people who work here aren't fancy people but they are friendly, kind, helpful and they make you feel right at home. The guy who I assume is the owner seems to know at least half of the customers and is not one of those people who manages from an office somewhere in back ... he practically flies from table to table greeting customers, filling coffee cups, asking how the food is and making sure you are absolutely satisfied. I've always believed that people treat you the way you treat them and as I read the negative comments from people who obviously picked the wrong place to eat I can't believe they are talking about the same place. But that's not just a hunch or a guess on my part because there is another truism that I believe in ... that if customers come back to a restaurant time after time after time so often that the owners and staff know them by name that business is doing something right. I think Red Mountain Café nailed "doing it right" a long time ago. read more

My family and I come to Red Mountain often. My kids love the pancakes. We always sit with Felicia and have some laughs! The owners have done a lot to create a great energy and theme for the restaurant. Today we had a steak and shrimp that was awesome. So don't think it's limited to breakfast they rocked it. Thank you for always making us feel welcome and like we matter. I appreciate the hard work and effort all of you have put in to make the restaurant awesome. Plan on waiting 45 minutes for a table if your doing the all you can eat fish night. Then an additional 1/2 hour for a waitress to take your order. Slow slow slow. They could use more help. Food is good read more

Under new management. Gone are all the Michigan memorabilia. The service was very good. The food is changing. Dined with 4 of us. Two ordered the 1/2 lb hamburgers. Asked to be cooked med/rare both came out well done. Doesn't seem like the same quality of preparation Chicken parm was good but temperature could have been hotter. Asked about the fish fry. Was told that has changed also. Not the same baked fish also not the choice of both. Need to take one or the other. All great things come up an end. Wish the old owners well. You will be missed. Even after making eye contact with a couple of the servers I asked can I st anywhere. "NO, YOU NEED TO GIVE ME A MINUTE!!" Thanks so much for being open for all those of us that want to get back to normal life. We normally would go to Crackers and co but they were only open for pickup. Found this place close by and it was a treat. Good ol fashion banter right when you walk in with small town charm and friendly wait staff. I had a biscuit and gravy with eggs over easy and home fries. Everything was made fresh there and delicious. My son had some awesome spaghetti and meatballs and my wife has a classic club towering with fries. You really get your money's worth, didn't get to try any of the amazing looking pastries or pies but our waitress came and gave my children 2 giant sugar cookies that they tore right through. Tax and 22% tip for 2 adults and 2 kids all with drinks for just 40 bucks. Found my new hometown favorite, we will be going back often! read more

I had promised Jaxon all day that we would go get ice cream at McDonald's drive-through. After stopping at two McDonald's, finding out they had no ice cream, Jax was super upset! We pulled into a gas station to gas up and I ran in and grabbed 4 pints of Ben & Jerry's! Total Redeemer! I only had two $10 bills in my pocket so I told the cashier I would just take one pint of ice cream off. The guy behind me had two drinks that he was going to purchase, and he told me that he'd pick up the tab, and after I told him no no I can run out and grab my wallet, he still insisted and I was blown away! I thanked him for his generosity, and proceeded to ask him what he did for work. He told me he was the chef for a place opening up for pick up business across the street, called Red Mountain Café, located on Val Vista and University. Let's support local and visit his restaurant this next week starting Monday 4/13. So, anybody in the Mesa area, please if you can go support this restaurant and help get them off to a great start! perfect. friends running errands and we asked at a local shop for a recommendation for lunch . this lil locally owned restaurant was her choice so we tried it . walked in to a crowd with a 10 minute wait. but we considered this a good sign..., popular choice. it's small and local although the price for what you get isn't ideal. spent $70 (after tip) for a small lunch that was mediocre for 2 adults and 2 kids. DISAPOITNED...I have been going to Red Mountain with my friend every week for quite awhile. We have always enjoyed their food both breakfast and lunch. Our meals were always fabulous and the staff a pleasure. Bring back the old fashioned way of a family restaurant. It has been under a new owner since November 1st. On my first meeting with the owner I mentioned how much we loved coming here and enjoyed a meal worth the money. All though a very long drive for me. One of the first things out of her mouth was "Well the previous owners never had portion control" Unlike other restaurants that charge a lot for less food. I don't support those types of restaurants not even fast food ones. Well we tried their breakfast and were EXTRMELY DISAPOIINTED, My friend who cannot eat a whole meal for health reasons, we shared. We are NOTR cheap seniors just a small stomach. The breakfast burrito was just tossed on a plate no presentation an d no sour cream and salsa as before, I was told there is an up charge $1.99 for 1 1/2 tablespoons of sour cream and salsa. Also the 2nd pate was dirty. When we ordered before it had a great presentation looked enjoyable. Wonder if that lack of garnish is her way of portion control? Well we decided that breakfast was not an option so we ordered lunch. We ordered a Club Sandwich again to share. They always split the sandwich and the fries were in the center, I was always provided a cup of ranch for the fries but now is an up charge. When we noticed that the sandwich was small we started to inspect. The turkey which was not real turkey (looked like a very cheap cut of what looks like turkey, was 1 thin slice, 2 slices of bacon and lots of lettuce and tomatoes to make it look large. It had NO flavor at all. I was told that it's supposed to be 4oz of meat, I don't think so. I talked to the owner and she was oblivious to the fact that if she upsets the regular customer and the snowbird they will not come back. She is only interest in revenue and has made her old time employees shake in their boots. We love our regular waitress staff as they know what we like and are extremely friendly. She also told me to get some rest and have a good night. Well I can't say to you what I would like to.. But good luck lady when you're out of business by next year. She's very nasty and condescending. Can't wait till she ruins the Friday Fish All You Can Eat. I bet she does away with it. Why buy a successful business and then ruin it. I gave this place a second try to get the fish fry right. My friends baked fish was raw. My 50/50 order found the baked fish also raw. The fried was too heavily breaded for my taste. It also wasn't a good tasting fish. Not sure what kind it was. The service was great. Many other customers we spoke with thought the food was great. So for comfort food it may be good. read more

I live right across the street from this cafe and just now found this little gem. It's a cute little cafe with ample seating and an old time atmosphere. My gf and I arrived during prime time on a Sunday but were seated immediately with a smile. Our waitress was amazing. We couldn't drink our beverages fast enough and she catered to us quite well considering how busy it was. I ordered the BLT and the SO had the open face meatloaf sammich. The BLT was amazing. Cool crisp lettuce, ripe red tomatoes and perfectly cooked smoked bacon at just the right thickness on flawlessly toasted sourdough. The open face meatloaf tasted like my grandma cooked it! Ohhhh the memories. The French fries were also amazing; golden brown with thick clouds of tater' goodness. Oh, and the ranch is delightful. No hidden valley here! Stay away from this restaurant. First we go in and we are greeted with a racist comment from someone behind us with a room full of older white people. Then we give our order and after 30 minutes finally stop the waitress who is purposefully ignoring us to ask her when our food is coming for her to lie to us when we knew it was just turned in one minute before.
