In the past few weeks I've gotten take out as well as dining in at the Red Line, both times the food has been excellent. This place always had pretty good food, but not yesterday. The butternut soup was so thick and sweet that it tasted more like pie filling than soup. The Manhattan clam chowder had more celery in it than anything else. The Greek platter had more salad than anything else. And the salad consisted of lettuce, a few bits of tomato, some unbrined feta crumbles, and four tiny bits of cucumber. The roast turkey tasted like it had been boiled. The stuffing must have been made out of a cloying sweet bread. The very sweet cornbread also had vanilla in it. The only good thing in the whole meal was the cranberry sauce. Oh, and the diet soda. So, I moved to the Hudson Valley going on 3 years now and this is probably the best diner I've ever been to. I hit this place for meal as much as once a week, be it breakfast, lunch, or dinner... and the occasional midnight snack. It's crisp, clean, great service, and most importantly: good food. Even when they are very busy the service does not falter, in my opinion a very important feature for a diner. Obviously keep your expectations in line from what you would expect from a diner, a really great diner. Some logistics, they have plenty of room for large groups, obviously accommodate children well, have ample parking, and are easily accessible from the highway of your travelling through and need a quick on and off place to eat before being on your way. They even have a full bar, if that's your thing to do at a diner; not for me but thought it was worth mentioning. I highly recommend the sweet potato pancakes or the cinnamon French brioche toast. If your in the area and looking for some quick eats and need a very reliable local spot, I suggest you add this to your quick hits list! For those that have read my reviews before, as a diner goes, this is best in class. read more

I'll start off that I've been here almost a dozen times and the food tastes amazing. Definitely recommend this place for breakfast, great portions and great selection. The reason I rate this a three though is that their salads are not as advertised. I've ordered the Manhattan Cob Salad with baby greens and it ends up having romain stems. I also get my favorite salad, the chicken walnut salad but the last two times I've asked for baby greens I get the stems of romaine. I've even sent one chicken walnut salad back to get real salad greens instead of stems. I don't mean this as a review change your interest in eating here, I would just like to inform everyone about their salads. I would like to come again and enjoy a delicious salad, without any Romain stems. read more

Yeah---another diner....another boring diner. Not a big diner fan but go with friends who are...so I was dragged along for a late breakfast. How hard is it to make a "custom omelette"...you know, I tell you what to put in it and it gets there??? How hard is that? I should not have to say NO ONIONS to an omelette in which I ordered only spinach and tomatoes...am I right??? And not to offer to remake the error??? I had to ask!!! And as such my friends were done longgggg before me! The staff were a bit off...which I opt to believe that they just have not yet developed a work flow due to how new the place is...but only time will tell. So here I was for the first time in decades, not far from my birth place, needed breakfast before a conference. It's mid-state NY, I didn't know what to expect. Here's what I got: Excellent friendly service, really good coffee - all I wanted, and to top it off GLUTEN-FREE TOAST!!! WHAT???? Yup, I found gluten free toast easier than it is to find in San Francisco, or almost anywhere in the Bay Area. And, it was only $1.00 extra, vs charging me for the whole loaf. I'm sorry but there is no amount of "good food" that makes a nasty, bitchy ass waitress and a "manager" worth ever eating here again. When Red Line first opened its doors, it was great. Now, they rely on traffic from 84 because the locals have caught on. This place sucks. I walked in with my daughter, my (basically) 2nd Mom and my (basically) aunt on Friday at 130 in the afternoon. We were seated immediately in a booth. We had to ask for a kids menu (my daughter is 3, there's no question that she "may" order from the adult menu) and no crayons, no nothing. Our waitress was at most, uninvolved and snotty. After ordering drinks and bringing them over which she was extremely quick to do, we hadn't even opened the menus before she said "Ok, are you ready?" My mom sort of chuckled and said "Ummm, no." So she left. Minutes later after ordering, she came back over and said "Did you all want the pickles and coleslaw with your sandwiches? Because a lot of people waste it and I won't bring it if you won't eat it." Lady, get a clue: If it states it on the menu, and is included in the price, I don't HAVE to eat it but I pay for it. I would take a coleslaw and pickle shower if it means I get to piss you off by bringing it to the table. What a ridiculous thing to say. If I'm paying for it, who cares if I eat it? Then as awkward as it looked, she brought 3 dishes of coleslaw with pickles on top to the table, like an appetizer. I laughed. How could I not? My daughter's food came 10 minutes before ours did. When we got our food, my aunt and I noticed that the panini we ordered, the Spinach Artichoke Turkey was half-assed. The bread was sliced so badly and so uneven, that the mound of turkey and filling inside was falling everywhere. My aunt refused to eat hers because you just couldn't. Where do you begin? How do you eat it? The manager came over and pointing to mine said "Well, hers looks good." She took my aunt's sandwich off the bill but the damage was done. We just wanted to go. Nasty service, really good food. Unfortunately, the food isn't worth going back for again because of the service. And even more, they'll stay open because hungry travelers dont know the difference. read more

I really liked this Diner. The 80s music reminded me of all the fun I had in the 80s and the many, many Diners I frequented. My server was friendly and attentive. Everything my friend and I got was disappointing. Now I know what you're thinking: How hard is it to mess up standard diner food, right? Very, apparently. After a really long day and an unintentionally skipped breakfast, we were starving! I got a cheeseburger and she got breakfast. I got iced coffee, she got hot. Both tasted like tinted water. And we both left much of our meals behind because they were dry, tasteless, or prepared wrong. We were hoping it would be different with dessert because their bakery is so large and tempting looking. The first hint should have been the water. I mean, after we waited 15 minutes for it to arrive at the table. Something was seriously wrong with the water I got, and whatever it was wasn't wrong with my girlfriend's water. A rich melange of bleach and rotten food with a burning aftertaste. The real problem happened when I ordered the medium rare filet mignon (I know, not the best thing to order from a diner, but the place looked nice) and got a well done flank steak. I paid 22 bucks for a 3 dollar cut of meat. At the very least, it all tasted pretty good... but I'm pretty smart about my meats. Don't put something in front of me and not expect me to know better. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. The food was ok but the service was horrible. My 6 yr old daughter ordered juice, my juice came a full 7 min before my daughters. Then she ordered M&m pancakes but the girl brought regular pancakes with my food. I was done before her pancakes came out and it looks like they only one or two M&Ms pancakes and kept the old ones. I grew up in Goshen,NY, I am staying in a hotel until I get a place and this my first time here. Most diners are the same and the service is what counts. The waitress messed up the order and although she repeated it back to me, there is not much difference between silver dollar pancakes and M&Ms pancakes so I guess should could have said silver instead if M&Ms but to add insult to injury she came with the check and apologized but said "that's why I repeated the order." I was going to leave a tip and I still will but she was horrible and I will never go to this place again. Also my daughter was sat under a leaky ac unit that dripped on her. I've been coming here for many years now and the last visit a week ago was the last straw. Food was late getting out so it was cold. Waitress was inattentive (which is probably why the food was late getting out). The place is so overpriced now it's ridiculous. A wrap, plain grilled cheese, and two fountain drinks came to $38 with tax - and that's BEFORE the tip! I think their success has gone to their heads as well because the management that mostly stands around handing out menus are just dripping with arrogance... never again. read more

I come up to the Fishkill / Beacon area from NYC about 2-3 times per year. The Red Line Diner is always our first meal when we're in the area. Always visiting later on a Friday night, we've been greeted warmly and seated promptly. The place is clean, friendly, and very welcoming. It's also quite a large space, and the "red" theme is present throughout, with easy on the eyes decor and a very modern looking dining room. The food is quintessential diner fare, with the requisite huge menu, and ample choices. Can't go wrong with a burger deluxe, or a soup, or a good sandwich. We've tried many different things here, and we've enjoyed everything we've tried. The Red Line Diner is also located across the street from a number of hotels, so it's a great option for a meal for anybody who's out of town and looking for something better than drive-thru or hotel breakfast. I keep coming back to the Red Line Diner, and I look forward to my next visit. read more

I'm giving these guys a four-star rating as far as diners go as I think it's one of the more consistent ones in the area. They have some unique sandwiches on the menu which I firmly believe is essential to differentiate the traditional diner experience. They could use some tiny little improvements but the average person wouldn't think twice. My buffalo wings came without celery and with blanched carrots that couldn't really be called "sticks". It seemed lazy to me. I got the French dip and while the meat was nicely cooked, there was a good inch on either end that was meatless. The flavor was good and the service was more than adequate. Add in that they keep the place very clean, id say you can could on a solid experience here. Give it a try. read more

We ended up here for Thanksghiving dinner. Not at all what we planned. But what a fortuitous surprise. Disappointingly they could not give me the dark meat turkey that I prefer, so I chose the Seafood Platter: shrimp, scallops, stuffed halibut, clams, all cooked to perfection. And the sides: creamed corn (freshly made not frozen), a yam, a mound of mashed potato, and zucchini. Before that there was a cocktail, soup (Cream of turkey) and a Waldorf salad. After pie (pumpkin or apple) with fresh whipped cream. Heavenly My husband had Maple-cooked Virginia Ham - also excellent along with the same soup, salad, and desert. The service was excellent - friendly despite the crowd. And welcoming -- we learned that most people there had reservations-- but they always leave some space in their seating plan for strangers like us tumbling off the interstate. We will definitely stop again when we travel this way. Because if the food is this good when they're so busy -- it must be even better on ordinary days. read more

The Red Line Diner is right near the hotel I'm staying in. How cool is that? They are open 24 hours and serve ginger ale. This place was under construction the last time I came to Fishkill. Its very homey with terrazzo floors and tall booths. There are so many different dishes on the menu, it takes a while to figure out what to eat. Well, more about that. I thought I was keeping to my non-dairy diet ordering the stir-fried vegetable dish, but I was surprised to find Rice-O-Roni (which was made with butter) at the bottom of the plate instead of steamed white rice and the teriyaki was like a soup-like flood over the vegetables. It was a familiar dish gone bad. The soup, matzo ball, was a cup size like you'd expect to get with a sandwich instead of a dinner size bowl which was weird. Also weird was that matzo ball which was just the size of maybe a golf ball and it's texture, somewhere between grits and polenta, wasn't right either. The broth was also too salty. So in summary, service was great, but the food really wasn't. read more

Then our almost nonexistent waitress Alison D. She kept checking on other tables and completely ignored us. I needed a spoon for my meal but she didn't come to see if we need anything. Another waitress brought a spoon, but set it on the contaminated table, so I could not use it. We waited more than 10 minutes for the check, asked for a box to take food home and was not offered a covered container to take home the side dish. Great food and great management! I must have dropped my credit card while paying my bill on the way out, I called after my trip and they immediately found it and mailed it to me in CA the next day. My 2 year old daughter liked the food here which is saying a lot - she's hard to please. As for the adults we had some great custom cocktails and there were ample meat and vegetarian options. Be ready to take some home : the portions are huge! The ambiance is also nice and as we were the for the holidays there was a nice festive vibe. While the Red Line Diner is pricier than the other Fishkill Diner and the Dutchess Diner, it never fails to make me want to come back. The first time I came here, around three weeks ago, I ordered chicken wings and a hamburger with an egg on it. I'm sure it has a specific name but that's what I got. By mistake, they put cheese on it. I'm not a fan of cheese on my hamburgers, so I absolutely couldn't eat it. I asked them to make me one without. Within eight minutes, they brought it out to me and it tasted great. Usually restaurants bring the food out 15+ minutes later. I was pleasantly surprised. I went to the Red Line Diner yesterday with my sister and we both ordered Gyros. Of course, I ordered wings again because they're so good and spicy and messy. The gyro was good and big. Came with french fries.. wish it came with something a little bit more Grecian but what can you do? It's a diner. One thing I like is that there's always a happy man at the door with big classes. Not too sure if he's the owner but he's the kind of person who smiles and makes other people smile. Overall, I would come back. All the servers are pleasant and they refill your drinks any time they see it empty. I like their service and I'm happy to give them business. read more

This may have been the best diner/burger experience I haver ever had. From start to finish every bite of the burger was awesome. Many times you can tell the burger patties are precooked waiting for an order. These were still hot and juicy and the roll was soft and fresh. I ordered the double burger that comes with two patties. To my surprise they had the rarely seen middle bun separating the burgers. I immediately said that's too many carbs. when I removed it from the sandwich I saw it was an honest to goodness middle bun and just another bottom. Talk about classy huh. the slaw was another step above standard diner fare. while it looked like it came from the same recipe, it was ridiculously fresh with lots of crunch. I'm glad we ordered the pot roast. It was served hot and was delicious. The service however left a lot to be desired. I get that restaurants are short handed and all, but we actually sat there for about a half hour before they brought the food. Ordering was not a problem she came right away. Then we ordered " coconut custard pie" for dessert which was horrible . Not sure if the eggs were spoiled but the coconut was very hard to chew. Who would think? Anyhow the waitress was not happy and she said she spoke with her manager and we would not receive a credit for the dessert because he had eaten half of it. We ordered one dessert for the two of us. So apparently they considered that eating half of it. Yes I would return there because I've never been disappointed in the past, but be prepared for very slow service and won't order dessert again. The menu is HUGE and so is the restaurant. I was seated right away, but people tell me that Sundays can be packed! My waitress wasn't amazing and she's the reason this post won't receive four stars. However, the food was great! I saw another table get served onion rings and I just had to have them. MMMmmmmm! What a wonderful decision! Get the onion rings, eat their sandwiches, order pancakes, and while you're at it... have a milkshake! This place is located right off a highway exit and I only found it because we were stopping to fill up. They get a lot of out of town visitors and they sure do work to impress! The entire place looked so clean even though it is clear they have a lot of traffic through there.
