At first, I wondered whether my expectations were simply influenced by Southern hospitality, but I also expect a certain level of warmth, courtesy, and consistency from Starbucks, especially given how central hospitality is to the brand. I noticed employees greeting and thanking other customers, yet I did not receive the same basic courtesy. On Tuesday, when I asked for whipped cream at the end of my order, the barista responded, "Give me a minute," without any acknowledgment or pleasantry. I understand that employees can become overwhelmed--I've worked in hospitality, restaurants, and hotels myself; but being busy should never make a customer feel dismissed or unwelcome. Wednesday was different. The young woman who assisted me was genuinely sweet, and we had a pleasant conversation. That interaction reminded me of the level of customer service I expect from Starbucks. Unfortunately, Thursday was disappointing as well. At the drive-thru, I picked up my mobile order, and after asking my name, the employee said, "Next time, give us more time," again without any greeting or courtesy. Overall, the inconsistency in these interactions left me disappointed and uncomfortable.

While I was there planning to visit the Italian Art Gallery nearby, I came across Cold Spring Coffee House and saw that it had great reviews, so I figured it would be the perfect place to start my day. Getting there: If you're coming from NYC, the Metro-North is super convenient. The coffee house is an easy walk from the Cold Spring train station, which makes it a great stop when spending the day exploring the town. Inside, the coffee house isn't overly decorated, but it has a nice, relaxed atmosphere. I wasn't a huge fan of how close together some of the tables were, but it was quiet enough to sit. They also have a few tables out front if you'd rather enjoy your coffee while taking in the charming street. But the real showstopper here is the pastry selection! With such a beautiful display of pastries, who needs extra decorations? There were so many tempting options that it was hard to choose, but I ultimately went with the Goat Cheese & Honey Danish and paired it with a medium coffee. Overall, I'm glad I added this stop to my Cold Spring adventure. I always enjoy spending time here, strolling through the town, popping into the different shops, and finding little spots like this along the way. It's a great place to grab a coffee and pastry before continuing to explore everything Cold Spring has to offer.

The baristas were quick and friendly and dressed up as superheroes (it was Halloween). I got a couple of oat milk lattes to bring back to the group as well as a pound of their "No Sleep till Beacon" grounds and it was a hit all around. I was grabbing and going, but lots of folks had grabbed a seat and kicked back with laptops, books, friends, whatever. Great spot with very good coffee.

They've done a good job at sprucing up the exterior of their shop so you do have a bit of a hint of the goodness that lies within. Once you enter, the shop itself is pure cuteness. They have electronic ordering near the door, QR codes on each table so you can easily order from there, or you can order directly at the counter. On my first visit, I got one of their smoothie bowls. I got it with a coconut base (instead of acai) and ordered the crispy berry smoothie bowl. It came with tons of beautifully fresh berries, pecans, and almond butter. It was divine. For my beverage, I got their coconut latte made with almond milk. It came beautifully presented with coconut shavings on top and a small cookie for dipping (are you serious?!? So lovely). I think I literally exclaimed, 'So lovely!' when they brought it to my table. Everything also tasted amazing. The coconut latte was made with beautifully rich and smooth espresso. It was completely dreamy. So much so, that I ordered the same coffee on two additional visits while I was in the area. On my second visit, I got their turkey panini which was one of the best turkey sandwiches I've had in a while. Perfectly toasted and filled with spinach, cheese, and grape tomatoes--I loved every bite. One my third visit, I got their breakfast toast made with veggie spread.
